Match Preview: Saints vs Inter

Show/hide article…

What’s at stake?

When the two sides met at San Siro, Antonio Candreva’s strike secured a 1-0 victory for Internazionale and blew Group K wide open.

It was the side’s first UEFA competition meeting and Saints will be out to avenge that defeat by extending Internazionale’s record of five games without an away win in Europe.

Since the reverse fixture, pressure rapidly increased on Nerazzurri boss Frank de Boer and, despite a 1-0 win over Torino earning some respite, the away defeat to Sampdoria by the same scoreline saw the end of his tenure. Former Carpi boss Stefano Vecchi will take temporary charge.

For Southampton, victory could prove hugely significant with Sparta Praha currently leading the way on six points, and Hapoel Beer-Sheva also on four points.

Saints are unbeaten in their last six European home games, since a 4-2 defeat to Sporting Lisbon in Ocotber 1981.

Team news

Claude Puel will be without full-back Cédric as he continues to work his way back to fitness, while Shane Long, Matt Targett, Alex McCarthy, Jake Hesketh and Harrison Reed are also sidelined.

For the visitors, Andrea Ranocchia returns could return for Inter after missing the reverse fixture through suspension, but interim manager Stefano Vecchi will be without Marcelo Brozovic who was sent off at San Siro.

Former Cardiff City man Gary Medel is also back in contention after missing the 1-0 defeat to Sampdoria through suspension, while Felipe Melo is out injured.

Stevan Jovetic, Joāo Mario, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Gabriel will not feature as they have not been registered in Inter’s Europa League squad.

Form guide

Southampton’s last five:

Chelsea (h) L 2-0

Sunderland (h) W 1-0 (EFL Cup)

Manchester City (a) D 1-1

Internazionale (a) L 1-0

Burnley (h) W 3-1

Internazionale’s last five:

Sampdoria (a) L 1-0

Torino (h) W 2-1

Atalanta (a) L 2-1

Southampton (h) W 1-0

Cagliari (h) L 2-1

Top performers

Nathan Redmond will be hoping to carry forward his form from October after netting twice against Burnley and Manchester City.

There were also some standout performances from Virgil van Dijk and Oriol Romeu, and after a substitute appearance against Chelsea, Sofiane Boufal could be in line for a start.

Top scorer: Charlie Austin (7), Nathan Redmond (3)

Most assists: Six players (1)

Mauro Icardi netted a brace in Internazionale’s most recent win against Sampdoria to continue what has been an impressive season for the Argentine.

Winger Antonio Candreva was the match winner last month and he has also provided three assists in the current campaign.

Top scorer: Mauro Icardi (9)

Most assists: Mauro Icardi (3), Antonio Candreva (3)

Did you know?

Inter’s 29 games against English clubs have yielded a record of W14 D4 L11 (W4 D1 L9 in England). They have lost their two most recent away fixtures against Premier League sides.

Saints have never lost consecutive games in European competition before.

Inter Milan’s visit to Southampton reward for fans, says James Ward-Prowse

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse says Southampton’s Europa League glamour tie against Inter Milan is a reward for the fans’ loyalty “through thick and thin”.

The Saints sank to the third tier of English football in the 2009-10 season, a campaign they started on -10 points after being placed in administration.

But they have since restored their place in the top flight and have qualified for the Europa League for two successive years, although they did not make it past the play-off stage in 2015-16.

Ward-Prowse, 22, came through the Saints Academy before breaking into the first team when he made his debut in a League Cup tie in 2011.

Having been part of the club when it dropped down to League One then fighting back up to the Premier League again in 2012, Ward-Prowse knows full well what such a fixture will mean to everyone at St Mary’s.

“It is going to be a great occasion,” he said. "The club has worked incredibly hard for nights like this and we as players, the manager and staff want to be involved in games like this. A lot rests on the game, so bring it on.

"Having been at the club for a long time, obviously I have seen the growth of the club on and off the pitch. Being a player here, it is great to see the rise of the club and it was a great feeling at the San Siro.

“This is a great game against a European giant and we will be looking to make sure we come out on top.”

Ward-Prowse added: "The fans stuck with the club through thick and thin, through the bad times and these are the good times now.

“A few of them would have been travelling to League One fixtures, and now we are hosting Inter Milan in the Europa League. We have a chance to qualify and hopefully they can get behind us to see us over the line.”

Southampton considering £200m takeover by Chinese investors

Show/hide article…

Southampton are considering a £200million takeover by a Chinese company.

According to Bloomberg news agency, Lander Sports Development Co have been in talks for several weeks with the club’s Swiss owner Katharina Liebherr.

Lander focused on property until last year, when it shifted its focus to sport, and in May agreed a deal to promote winter sports in China, who will host the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

The company announced a loss of $44.8m (£36.5m) for the year ending September 30.

If any deal is completed, Southampton would become the latest English club to be bought by Chinese investors following takeovers at West Bromwich, Aston Villa, Wolves and Birmingham.

Southampton boss Claude Puel, whose side host Inter Milan in the Europa League tonight, said he was not aware of any takeover.

Inter Milan arrive in England in a state of crisis. They are bottom of Group K, 13 points behind league leaders Juventus in Serie A, and seeking their ninth manager in six years after sacking Frank de Boer this week.

Youth team coach Stefano Vecchi will take charge of Inter at St Mary’s and Puel added: ‘We don’t know what to expect from Inter now. We now have to show more concentration.’

Southampton, who are second in the group with four points from three games, will be without injured striker Shane Long and full back Cedric Soares.

Jeremy Pied, Matt Targett, Alex McCarthy, Jake Hesketh, and Harrison Reed are also out.

Interim Inter Milan coach Stefano Vecchi says pressure is on against Southampton

Interim Inter Milan coach Stefano Vecchi says pressure is on against Southampton

Stefano Vecchi says he is only thinking about Thursday’s Europa League clash with Southampton after being named interim Inter Milan coach.

Youth team coach Vecchi took charge on Tuesday following the sacking of Frank de Boer, leaving him with just two days to prepare for the trip to St Mary’s.

And he takes charge of a team who are out of form in Serie A, and currently lie 12th after losing four of their last five.

They beat Southampton 1-0 in the reverse fixture a fortnight ago but lost their previous two Group games and are currently bottom of Group K.

“I am sorry for Frank de Boer, for solidarity with a colleague,” said Vecchi in his pre-match press conference.

"The relationship between the first team and the youth team was good. Unfortunately, these things happen in football.

“I’ve worked with some of these players before, but clearly to prepare for a Europa League game puts the pressure on.”

Vecchi, 45, has been mentioned as a candidate to take charge on a full-time basis but he is determined not to look too far ahead.

“I do not know what will happen,” he said when asked about his future prospects. I am the coach of Inter and thank the sporting director Piero Ausilio for the opportunity. What happens next is not important.

“What is important is the game tomorrow night, without looking too far ahead. We often talk about the future but we have to live today, and tomorrow you can decide what is next.”

Defender Andrea Ranocchia says the players need to respond to De Boer’s sacking with an improved performance.

“This time is not easy but it is a great opportunity to show that we are still alive,” he said. “The excuses are over, now there needs to be a reaction from the players and the whole club.”

Get ready to “sweat blood” Inter star tells Saints

Show/hide article…

INTER Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia has warned Saints that if they want to win tonight at St Mary’s “they will have to come away sweating blood”.

The former Italy international, who returns from suspension after being sent off in their 3-1 defeat at Sparta Prague in September, has urged Inter to pick themselves up after manager Frank de Boer’s sacking and give Saints a tough game.

The Dutch boss was dismissed after just 14 games in charge on Tuesday, but the 28-year-old knows that the Nerazzurri can’t dwell on their problems in this crunch Europa League group stage match, with their place in the competition hanging by a thread.

“We’re all very experienced professionals,” he said. “We’ve seen everything in football. Clearly, we are sad and disappointed for the coach because you work closely with him.

“When they leave it’s obviously very sad for everyone involved at the club, but that’s now in the past. We can’t think about what’s happened.

“We have a match, but it won’t be easy.

“We have the chance really to show we can fight tooth and nail to win this match. We need to show that we are still alive and kicking.

“And if Southampton want to win this match, they have come away sweating blood.”

The Italian giants sit bottom of Group K and a defeat tonight will likely consign them to elimination from the Europa League, while boosting massively Saints’ chances of qualifying.

Ranocchia has said that the excuses, after a poor beginning to the season, must stop and that Inter have to be focused on Saints. “I think the excuses are over for everyone from the first man to the last,” he said. “I don’t think there were any serious issues of communication with Frank de Boer.

“I know everyone is saying there’s going to be a new coach. There are issues around the club but tomorrow we have a clear goal. No one can afford to think about what’s gone on. We just have to perform as best we can.”

“Having been at the club for a long time, obviously I have seen the growth of the club on and off the pitch. Being a player here, it is great to see the rise of the club and it was a great feeling at the San Siro.
