Stefano Vecchi admits pressure is on ahead of Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

Inter Milan’s interim coach Stefano Vecchi has admitted the pressure is on as he faces a Europa League clash with Southampton barely 48 hours after stepping in for the sacked Frank de Boer.

Youth team coach Vecchi got the call after De Boer’s reign was cut short following a disappointing start to the season which has left Inter 12th in Serie A, 13 points adrift of leaders Juventus.

‘I am sorry for Frank de Boer, for solidarity with a colleague,’ Vecchi said in his press conference. ‘The relationship between the first team and the youth team was good. Unfortunately these things happen in football.’

While De Boer paid for Inter’s league form - they have lost four out of their last five - the European campaign has hardly gone to plan either as the Italians sit bottom of Group K with three points from their opening three games.

Victory over Southampton in Milan was Inter’s only success so far, and Vecchi needs to mastermind a repeat to rescue hopes of progressing from the group.

‘I’ve worked with some of these players before, but clearly to prepare for a Europa League game puts the pressure on,’ Vecchi added.

The 45-year-old has already been mentioned as a candidate to take the job full-time, but he said now was not the time for the discussion.

‘I do not know what will happen,’ he said. 'I am the coach of Inter and thank the sporting director Piero Ausilio for the opportunity. What happens next is not important.

‘What is important is the game tomorrow night, without looking too far ahead. We often talk about the future but we have to live today and tomorrow you can decide what is next.’

Defender Andrea Ranocchia said the players were determined to show a reaction after the events of the past two days.

‘This time is not easy but it is a great opportunity to show that we are still alive,’ he said.

‘The excuses are over, now there needs to be a reaction from the players and the whole club.’

Southampton v Inter preview: Saints looking to boost knockout hopes

Show/hide article…

Southampton will be looking to boost their Europa League knockout stage qualification hopes as they host managerless Inter at St Mary’s on Thursday.

Claude Puel’s side are on four points in a tight Group K, two points off leaders Sparta Prague, and level with third-place Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

The Premier League side were defeated 1-0 in Milan but Inter, who are propping up Group K, have since sacked head coach Frank de Boer.

Just six seasons ago Saints were still in the third tier of English football while Inter were defending the Champions League title they won under Jose Mourinho’s watch, but the two will meet as equivalents for the second time in two weeks.

Southampton manager Puel is again expected to utilise his squad for the Europa League clash with Inter.

Midfielder James Ward-Prowse is likely to be involved, having played in both the last European fixture at the San Siro as well as the EFL Cup win over Sunderland. He was an unused substitute for Sunday’s Premier League game with Chelsea.

Forward Jay Rodriguez continues to be assessed following a clash of heads during the win over Sunderland, while Shane Long has been out with a hamstring problem.

Inter caretaker Stefano Vecchi is likely to replace suspended Marcelo Brozovic with Assane Demoya Gnoukouri.

Rodrigo Palacio and Stefan Jovetic are injured for the clash on the south coast.

The reverse fixture in October was Southampton’s first meeting with both Internazionale and Italian opposition.

Inter have lost four of their last five European away games in England, winning the other at Chelsea in March 2010 en route to winning the Champions League.

The Italian side won the reverse fixture against Southampton in October 1-0, courtesy of their only shot on target.

Southampton have lost only one of their 15 home games in all European competitions (W8 D6), losing 2-4 vs Sporting Lisbon in a UEFA Cup tie in October 1981.

Inter are winless in their last five away games in European competition (D3 L2), conceding exactly three goals in each of the last three.

Saints have never lost consecutive games in European competition before.

Only Shakhtar Donetsk (1) and St Etienne (5) have faced fewer shots on target in the Europa League this season than Southampton (6).

Meanwhile, Inter have mustered just seven shots on target in the competition this season, fewer than any other Group K side.

Inter plan to “take the game” to Saints

Show/hide article…

INTER Milan’s caretaker boss Stefano Vecchi has stated that he plans to “take the game” to Saints tonight in their crucial Europa League group stage clash at St Mary’s.

Youth team coach Vecchi was placed in charge after Frank de Boer was sacked on Tuesday, but, despite the limited preparation time, is gearing his side up to go at Claude Puel’s side.

He said: “I always like to take the game to the opposition, but I don’t know whether at times during the game, when Southampton’s ability comes to the fore, we will be forced to defend. When they do so we will be prepared to scrap.

“We will try and play football because a point might not be enough [to stay in the competition], but we will play our own game knowing that the opposition is strong.”

Vecchi believes that the turbulence at Inter may mean they will be tougher challenge for Saints, with an element of unpredictability that comes with a new man at the helm “Of course, there will be a slight advantage,” he said. “But everyone knows the Inter players and staff.

“There’s a number of international players, so there won’t be too many surprises for Southampton.”

Inter are bottom of Group K and know nothing but a victory will do, while Saints will be looking for revenge after an unlucky 1-0 defeat at the San Siro two weeks’ ago.

Vecchi is not looking beyond the Saints game, despite talk that, if he impresses while at the helm, he could be an option as a permanent replacement to De Boer.

“It doesn’t matter how long I am in charge for,” he said. “What matters is tonight’s match, which is very important.

“There’s no point in looking further forward than that.

“Often people say it takes time or we need to be patient because there’s another coach taking over, but we actually have a match that is very important.

“It could be crucial, so all I can do is prepare for this fixture as best as I can, and I’m putting myself in the hands of the players.

“We’ve got some very good players and we need them perform and come out of a situation that is proving more difficult than we first envisaged.

“I know what the players can do and I trust them.”

The caretaker expressed sorrow to De Boer who was sacked after just 14 games in charge at the Nerazzurri, leaving them a disappointing 12th in Serie A and struggling in the Europa League.

“I’m very sorry to Frank de Boer,” he said. “He was someone who put a lot of passion and commitment into the job.

“I got on with him very well. As a coach I thought he was very professional, so I’m sorry that this happened, but unfortunately coaching changes do happen on a regular basis.”

Saints enter the unknown against Inter

Show/hide article…

Saints will be entering the unknown tonight as they welcome Inter Milan to St Mary’s.

The sacking of Frank De Boer has led to uncertainty in the Saints camp as to what they may be up against, with rumours that caretaker manager Stefano Vecchi could change formation and personnel in his first game in charge.

There could also be a few players who feel they have a point to prove, all adding up to Inter being much more of an unknown quantity than had De Boer remained in charge.

Saints boss Claude Puel admitted: “Of course I think it is difficult for us to prepare this game because we don’t know what we can expect of the profile, of the spirit, the system, the play.

“We know they are great players, good possibilities and they won the first game with difficulties and this is the quality of the players. They can make the difference every time.

“Like the first one we can dominate this game with quality and many chances and we know this game with one or two chances for Inter Milan.

“This is a great team and a great player and we have to be careful of this team, but the most important for us is to stay with a good concentration on our game and to play good football and create different chances and good work to win this game.”

Despite leading Inter to a 1-0 win against Saints in the San Siro in the Europa League a fortnight ago, De Boer was sacked on Tuesday after just 84 days in charge, underlining again the fickle world of football management.

“It is always a shame when a trainer don’t keep this place, but for us it is important to stay with concentration on our game, and it is difficult to say something about this team because of course we don’t know all the information around this,” reflected Puel.

“It is important to stay with a good spirit, good attitude and good concentration on our game.”

He added: “What I can say about this is just that I am the trainer of Southampton and Southampton shows me to be the trainer and to work and to improve and make progress with different young players.

“I know my work here is to continue this work, this good work, and to improve all these young players, and to try also to have good results.

“It is a balance between the two and after all the team, perhaps after like other things, like every time the best results.

“I like to speak of Southampton, my club, and this balance between the improvements of the players and the results also is of course important for every team.

“With a good spirit and a good possibility it is important to work with a good atmosphere, good spirit, like Southampton. All this is very important and very positive.”

Puel targets two wins for Saints qualification

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel believes Saints will need six points from their remaining three games to make it through to the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Saints have taken four points from the first half of their Group K campaign, after a win at home to Sparta Prague, a draw at Hapoel Be’er Sheva and defeat to Inter Milan in the San Siro.

Puel thinks ten points will get them through as one of the top two teams, with matches at home to Inter and Be’er Sheva coming either side of the trip to Prague.

The Saints boss is optimistic over his side’s chances with tonight’s game against Inter looking like a key fixture.

He said: “Of course it’s an important game against Inter Milan but I am not so sure (it is decisive) because they lost the first two games.

“For us also I saw we take it late with a loss at the San Siro and it is important to win this game.

“The qualification will be normally around ten points. Six points from three games for us and we play two games at home and one game away and it will be important to win at home. That is very very important.”

Puel will definitely be without Cedric Soares, Shane Long, Matt Targett, Alex McCarthy, Jake Hesketh and Harrison Reed for tonight’s game, while Jay Rodriguez could be fit to be involved again.

The pressure is on Puel to play his strongest side this evening, but he insists that all the competitions Saints are involved in remain equally as important in his mind.

“All the competitions are my priorities because I think it will be very interesting for the squad to continue in this competition, because they can learn more and more things in these games,” admitted Puel.

“The cups, the Europa League, the Premier League, is all important for me. We will see the future and if we can stay with the competitions.

“It is the objective of the squad to want to play every three days, and it is hard of course for the energy and the recovery but it is interesting to play these games and all the players prefer games to training sessions.”

He added: “I expect the same as the first game – a good quality on the play and the possibility to take points of course.

“I think we lost late at the San Siro and it is important to continue our qualification possibilities and to keep the possibilities to continue this work.

“It is important for us to see this.”

Time for Inter revenge, says Ward-Prowse

Show/hide article…

JAMES Ward-Prowse has urged Saints to take revenge on Inter Milan with the Italians in chaos following the departure of manager Frank de Boer.

Saints were unlucky to come away empty handed from the San Siro two weeks’ ago in the 1-0 defeat in Italy, and Ward-Prowse believes there is an opportunity to set the record straight tonight, writes Peter Howard.

“We have to use the home advantage,” he said. “We still have a bit of disappointment from the first game, so it’s going to be a bit of revenge and making sure we can get the three points this time.

“We weren’t disappointed by the way we played at the San Siro,” he continued. “But obviously the result wasn’t right. We dominated the game and should have put the game to bed.”

De Boer was sacked on Tuesday following a poor start to the season, with youth team coach Stefano Vecchi placed in temporary charge.

Ward-Prowse reckons that Inter’s problems might add an element of unpredictability to the Europa League group stage match.

“We can’t have prepared as well as we would have liked to,” he said. “The new manager might have a different way of playing, especially with set-pieces.

“We can’t think too much about that, we just have to execute our game plan. If we do that we will come out on top.”

He added: “It can go one of two ways. Obviously with no manager the players might feel like they have to prove themselves to the new incoming manager.

“On the other hand they could be down and frustrated at what is going on at the club, but we can’t really think too much about that.”

The midfielder, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Tuesday, has been at Saints since he was eight years old.

He has seen the club toil in the lower leagues blighted by financial problems, so knows how big an occasion it is to welcome one of the most famous names in European football to St Mary’s.

It was just six years ago that Saints were playing Dagenham & Redbridge – who are now in the National League with Eastleigh – in League One at St Mary’s.

At the same time Inter, who had just won the treble under Jose Mourinho, were chasing down Lazio at the summit of Serie A.

But after the well-documented rise through the ranks, Saints now meet Inter as an established Premier League force and are considered favourites for the game.

“Having been at the club along time I’ve seen the growth on and off the pitch,” he said. “It’s great to see the rise of the club and it was a great feeling going to the San Siro.

“It’s a great game against a European giant and we’ll be looking to come out on top.

“It’s going to be a great occasion,” he added. “The club’s worked incredibly hard for nights like this. Bring it on.”

Ward-Prowse has told the fans to go and enjoy a special occasion at St Mary’s.

“They’ve stuck with the club through thick and thin,” he said. “These are the good times now. A few years ago many of them would have been travelling to League One fixtures and now we’re hosting Inter Milan in the Europa League.

“We have a chance of qualifying to the next stage and we have to make sure they get behind us as always to get us over the line.”

Who is the man behind £200m Saints takeover bid?

Show/hide article…

HE is the self-made multi-millionaire who spent time in the armed police force and who has now set his sights on Saints.

Gao Jisheng is the man behind the company currently in talks with Southampton FC over a possible £200m-plus takeover deal.

The 64-year-old is the founder, chairman and CEO of Lander Sports Development Co Ltd, the firm revealed as being in negotiations to claim a stake in St Mary’s.

Having worked his way up through the industry, Jisheng sits at the top of an empire which was built on property but has now switched to the lucrative sports development sector.

Born in October 1952, Jisheng served in the Shanghai People’s Armed Police for seven years from the age of 18, during which time he graduated from Shanghai Normal University - before becoming a self-made multi-millionaire.

He founded Lander Holdings Group Ltd in 1995 and has only recently switched the company’s focus from property to sports investment.

Jisheng’s 59 per cent stake, which he shares with his daughter Jingna, in Lander Holdings was estimated at $1.4 billion last June when Forbes, the respected business magazine, reported that the company’s shares had increased by an incredible 700 per cent during the previous year.

Two months later it was announced that Lander Real Estate Company Ltd had become Lander Sports Development Company Ltd.

Lander Sports is based in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, but last week the company opened an office in London, which was registered with Companies House on October 27.

Last year Macau Business Daily reported: “Lander’s business scope has shifted entirely from property investment to the organization of sports activities; design, construction and management of stadiums; research and sales of sporting goods as well as engaging in sports agency business.”

Soon after the name-change it announced a ten-year partnership deal with Hangzhou Sports Development Group, which involved launching a company responsible for re-establishing the region’s women’s soccer team.

It is committed to investing more than £1m a year into the club with the aim to establish it as one of China’s top women’s sides within three years.

This subsidiary aims to tap into the international market of sports games and broadcasting, by organizing video game contests covering 20 million participants and 100 million viewers.

Lander has also established a sports trading centre, acquired Asian Professional Basketball Management and Development and partnered with China Sports Publications Corporation.

According to Chinese sports marketing agnecy Yutang Sports, it also signed a partnership agreement with Macau casino-resort operator The Venetian Macao Ltd to co-develop, organise and broadcast large-scale sporting events.

But the deal was later terminated, with the reason not disclosed by either party.

Jisheng, who studied in Japan from 1989-90, is also a Distinguished Professor of real estate EMBA program in Tsinghua University, a research university based in Beijing.

After graduating, he served in the Shanghai People’s Armed Police as a squad leader and technician from 1970-77.

From 1977 to 1989, he worked in No.2 Light Industry Corporation in Hangzhou. In the five years before founding Lander , he served as the General Manager of Xiaoshan State-Owned Industrial Corporation.

Lander Real Estate provided residential community projects throughout China and was also involved in property management, materials distribution and catering businesses.

But its research, development and distribution of sports, which has been a feature of the company for many years, is now all-consuming.
