Southampton v Inter Milan

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel said it is “difficult to prepare” for Thursday’s Europa League match against Inter Milan after the Italians sacked manager Frank de Boer on Tuesday.

Youth team coach Stefano Vecchi will take charge of Inter at St Mary’s.

Puel said: “We don’t know what to expect from Inter now. We now have to show more concentration.”

Southampton will be without striker Shane Long and full-back Cedric Soares who are still injured.

Jeremy Pied, Matt Targett, Alex McCarthy, Jake Hesketh, and Harrison Reed are also out.

Two weeks ago, Inter won the reverse fixture 1-0 thanks to Antonio Candreva’s goal.

But De Boer was sacked this week after 85 days in charge with Inter 12th in Serie A after four league defeats in five games.

“It’s always a shame for a coach to lose his job,” Puel said.

Vecchi was leading a session with Inter’s under-19 team on Tuesday morning when he was informed De Boer had been sacked and was told to get to the club’s training ground to take charge.

“I had time to run a quick session and I have lost a few hours sleep analysing my own team and Southampton,” he said. "It is an unusual situation.

“Frank put a lot passion and commitment into the job and we got on very well. I am sorry this has happened.”

Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia said the Saints will have to “come spitting blood” if they want to win the game.

“We have the chance to show we can fight tooth and nail,” he added.

Southampton are second in Group K with four points from three games, two points behind leaders Sparta Prague.

Inter meanwhile are bottom with three points.

Southampton boss Claude Puel unaware of takeover talks

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel says he does not know anything about reported Chinese interest in a takeover of the club.

Reports emerged on Wednesday which stated that the owners of the Premier League side were holding talks with a Chinese company.

Chinese ownership of English teams has been significantly on the rise of late following takeovers of West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City.

However, speaking ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League clash with Inter Milan, Puel said that talk of a takeover was news to him.

“I have no idea about the situation,” said Puel, who replaced Ronald Koeman at Southampton in the summer. “I give all my confidence to the president and the people at the club to do things in a good way.”

Midfielder James Ward-Prowse conceded that Southampton’s recent success - the club finished sixth in the Premier League last season - made them natural candidates for investment.

Ward-Prowse said: “It’s the first I have heard of it, but it is a great club, a worldwide club, so of course there is going to be world interest.”

UPDATE: Saints owner ‘in talks to sell club to Chinese company’

Show/hide article…

SAINTS owner Katharina Liebherr is reportedly in talks to sell the club to a Chinese company.

Respected international business news company Bloomberg reported that talks have taken place with the Lander Sports Development Company with regards to a potential £200m sale.

Chinese companies have recently turned their attentions to English clubs after President Xi Jinping stated he wanted to turn the nation into a major footballing force.

Four Midlands clubs - West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Wolves and Birmingham City - have recently been taken over by Chinese companies, with Saints’ Premier League rivals Hull City potentially being taken over by Hong Kong-based GreaterChina Professional Services Ltd.

Lander focused on the sale and management of property until last year but more recently has shifted to sports.

Its ventures include a sports insurance collaboration with Du-Bang Property & Casualty Insurance, and winter sports in China, which will host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Bloomberg reports that a Premier League team would be among Lander’s biggest assets and the company announced a loss of about $44.8million last year.

Saints had a £12million profit and will benefit from the Premier League’s new lucractive TV contact, which is the biggest in history.

There is speculation that Lander’s interest in Saints could be inspired by the club’s academy, which has produced players including Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale, Manchester United defender Luke Shaw and Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana.

The Italian giants were themselves taken over by a Chinese company - Suning Holdings - earlier this year.

Libeherr’s father, Markus, rescued Saints from potential oblivion when he bought the club in July 2009 after previous owners Southampton Leisure Holdings PLC had gone into administration.

Claude Puel insists he is in dark over £200m Southampton takeover

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel admitted he was in the dark about talks over a £200m Chinese takeover of Southampton.

The news broke on the eve of the crucial Europa League tie with Inter Milan – the Serie A giants bought by Chinese company Suning in June.

They sacked Frank De Boer after only 84 days this week and will have youth team coach Stefano Vecchi on the bench for his first game.

Bloomberg reported the Saints have been in exclusive talks for “several weeks” with Lander Sports Development Co over the latest – and biggest - Chinese investment in English football.

Hull are negotiating with a Hong Kong-based consortium while Chinese companies have already bought West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City.

Wolves sacked Walter Zenga after 87 days last week while Inter’s Italian directors want to appoint former Lazio coach Stefano Pioli but the Chinese bosses want a more glamorous appointment like Guus Hiddink or Andre Villas-Boas.

New owners would inevitably raise questions over the future of Frenchman Puel who was appointed in the summer by chairman Ralph Krueger and director of football Les Reed. Southampton are owned by the Swiss Liebherr family.

And the former Lille and Lyon coach admitted: “I have no idea about this subject. But I give all my confidence (trust) to the president and all the people in the club to work very well and do hings in a good way. I have no problem and I have all the confidence my chairman and with the future of the club.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg insists Inter Milan visit is nothing to be frightened of

“I am trying to concentrate on tomorrow’s game. After we will have time to discuss and speak with this for the future. We will see with the chairman - he is a good man to talk about this subject.”

Southampton went into administration in 2009 – the year before Inter Milan won the Champions League under Jose Mourinho. Now the Saints are an established Premier League club tapping into the vast TV revenues while making profits in the transfer market.

James Ward-Prowse said: “It’s the first I’ve heard of it, but it’s a great club and it’s a worldwide club playing in the Europa League so of course there will be worldwide interest.”

Southampton targeting January swoop Atalanta teenage midfielder Franck Kessie

The highly-rated 19-year-old midfielder has also attracted the attention of Schalke, Monaco, Napoli and Juventus after impressing for his club.

Ivory Coast international Kessie has played nine times for his club in Serie A this season, scoring four times.

The teenager has previously been the subject of interest from Arsenal, with his agent confirming the Gunners’ interest in April this year.

George Atangana told The Sun: "Arsenal have sent scouts to watch him twice.

“All the big clubs in Italy rate him and he’s got a lot of foreign interest as well.”

Revealed: Saints in talks with Chinese company over potential £200million sale

Show/hide article…

SAINTS are in talks with a Chinese company regarding a potential sale, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Katharina Liebherr and representatives of Lander Sports Development have held discussions in recent weeks as the China based giant aim to get a foothold in the Premier League.

However, the Echo understands that talks between the two parties remain in the early stages, and there is as yet no solid indication over whether there will indeed be a £200m offer to buy the club, potential investment with Libeherr still the majority owner, or nothing at all.

The club has entered a six-week exclusivity agreement with the company and if it cannot come up with a suitable offer then other options will be considered.

For her part, Liebherr is understood to be conducting her own due diligence on Lander Sports Development, and discussing their intentions should any investment come to fruition.

Liebherr inherited the club from her billionaire father Markus in early 2013 and has taken it to heart, regularly flying in to attend Saints fixtures and functions.

The Daily Echo understands that Liebherr, who could have easily sold the club at a substantial profit in the past couple of years, will not do business unless she is convinced it is in the best long-term interest of Saints.

Bloomberg reports that a Premier League team would be one of Lander’s biggest assets after the company announced a loss of about $44.8million last year.

Saints had a £12million profit and will benefit from the Premier League’s new lucractive TV contact, which is the biggest in history.

The club is known for its ability to produce star players including Real Madrid’s Champions League winner Gareth Bale.

Puel: Inter could be unpredictable

Show/hide article…

The Italian club dismissed their boss on Tuesday, meaning that youth coach Stefano Vecchi is set to take charge at St Mary’s tomorrow.

Puel believes that turn of events makes it a slightly more challenging task to prepare ahead of the potentially pivotal Group K meeting.

"Of course, I think it is difficult for us to prepare this game, because we don’t know what we can expect of the profile in terms of the spirit, the system and the play,” said the Saints manager.

"We know they are great players, with good possibilities. They can make the difference every time.

"Like the first game, we can dominate this game with quality and many chances.

“But this is great team with great players, and we have to be careful.

“But the most important for us is to stay with good concentration on our game and to play good football and create different chances and good work to win this game.”

Ward-Prowse: Inter game shows growth

Show/hide article…

The two club’s juxtaposition of fortunes since 2010, when Southampton won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and their Italian counterparts lifted the UEFA Champions League has been much talked about.

And Ward-Prowse, who is well-placed to chart the club’s rise having been at the club since the age of eight, is hoping the fans will savour the occasion and help the team towards qualification.

He said: “Having been at the club for a long time, I’ve seen the growth on and off the pitch.

“It’s great to see the rise of the club and it’s a great game against a European giant.

“The fans have stuck with the club through thick and thin and the bad times. These are the good times now.

“A few years ago a few of them would have been travelling to League One fixtures and now we’re hosting Inter in the Europa League.

“We have a chance of qualifying to the next stage and we have to make sure they behind us to give us that boost and get over the line.”

Ward-Prowse relishing Europa League clash against Inter Milan

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse believes Southampton have earned their glamour Europa League home tie against Italian giants Inter Milan and challenged everyone to rise to the occasion.

Ward-Prowse, 22, came through the Saints Academy before breaking into the first team when he made his debut in a League Cup tie in 2011.

Having been part of the club when it dropped down to League One in 2009-2010 amid financial turmoil before then fighting back up to the top-flight again in 2012, Ward-Prowse knows full well what such a fixture will mean to everyone at St Mary’s.

‘It is going to be a great occasion. The club has worked incredibly hard for nights like this and we as players, the manager and staff want to be involved in games like this. A lot rests on the game, so bring it on,’ Ward-Prowse said at a press conference.

'Having been at the club for a long time, obviously I have seen the growth of the club on and off the pitch. Being a player here, it is great to see the rise of the club and it was a great feeling at the San Siro.

‘This is a great game against a European giant and we will be looking to make sure we come out on top.’

Ward-Prowse added: 'The fans stuck with the club through thick and thin, through the bad times and these are the good times now.

‘A few of them would have been travelling to League One fixtures, and now we are hosting Inter Milan in the Europa League. We have a chance to qualify and hopefully they can get behind us to see us over the line.’

Southampton lost 1-0 in Milan last month, which left them in third place in Group K, but only a point ahead of the Italians.

Saints boss Claude Puel admits it is something of a strange scenario to be playing a team in such an important tie just days after seeing head coach Frank de Boer sacked.

‘It is always a shame when a coach does not keep his place, but for us it is important to maintain good concentration on our game,’ the Frenchman said.

'Of course it is difficult for us to prepare for this game because we don’t know what to expect in terms of the profile, the spirit, the system of play (from Inter).

‘But we are sure that they are great players, they won the first game while struggling and that is the quality of the players they have.’

Southampton are reported to be in talks over a £200million takeover by Chinese company Lander Sports Development.

Puel, though, insists it remains business as usual for the players and coaching staff.

‘I finish the training session and I have no idea on this subject,’ said Puel, who was appointed in the summer following the departure of Ronald Koeman to Everton.

‘I give all my confidence of course with the president (chairman), with all the people in the club to work very well and to do the things in a good way and the right way.’

Puel added: 'I am of course staying concentrated on the game. After this, the other things we will have time to discuss and to speak with this for the future.

'We will see this with the chairman and he is a good man to answer this subject.

‘I say I have no problem of course and I have all my confidence with the chairman and the future of the club.’

Ambitious Southampton try to tempt THE POPE into Twitter banter - and fail

Show/hide article…

Football club’s social media accounts have undergone a not-so subtle and significant change in recent years.

While they used to be pretty straight laced and solely focused on giving you the news, the scores and the facts, they’ve now become a lot more jokey, with attempts to “banter each other off” now more and more frequent.

There are those weird, over-friendly exchanges between clubs on the day of massive Champions League games , and then those odd occasions when clubs get strangely passive aggressive .

And then there’s the times they try and get a response out of the Pope.

Well at least that’s exactly what Southampton tried to do recently.

Because when Pope Francis’s official Twitter account (we’re going to assume he does his own tweeting) tweeted this out to his 9.95 million followers recently, they were right on the ball.

Step forward an overly keen member of the Saints’ social media department, who saw this as a red (and white striped) rag to a bull.

Boom! Grade A Twitter “bantz” right there. Now if only the Pope would respond, then what a huge boost that would be for the Saints’ account, with its 646,000 followers. Think of the engagement rates!

And over a day later the Pope has yet to respond.

It was nice try though, Saints.

Maybe lower your sights a little next time eh?
