Puel: Boufal’s strike no surprise to me

Show/hide article…

The Morrocan marked his full Saints debut with a world-class strike against the Black Cats, though Puel expected nothing less from his club-record summer signing.

“For me, it’s not a surprise to see his goal because I know Sofiane,” explained the manager.

“His goal is fantastic, of course, and it was very important for the squad because if we had to play 30 minutes in extra time it would have been very hard for us.

“For the moment, he’s not at 100% physical level but it’s important to stay patient with him and step-by-step he can come back at a good physical level.

“It was hard for him to play 90 minutes, but there is no other way replicate that.”

Saints fielded six Academy players to help see them through to the final eight of the EFL Cup.

And the French manager was also full of praise for the contribution of his youngest players.

“All the Academy players played with enthusiasm and energy,” he continued.

“Sometimes without experience and maturity, but that is normal. It was a little difficult for me on the bench to speak with them and give them direction because they lack the understanding of our structure.

“But with the energy they can – and did - do a good job to adjust. These sorts of games will be important for them in their future development.”

Sofiane Boufal: Southampton winner against Sunderland ‘for everyone’

Show/hide article…

Sofiane Boufal has said he wants to make up for lost time after a stunning home debut for Southampton.

Boufal, Saints’ record £21 million summer signing, was out injured for the first two months of the season.

But the Moroccan winger marked his belated full debut with a fine goal as Claude Puel’s side beat Sunderland 1-0 to reach the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup.

He brought a long ball under control with one touch before beating full-back Billy Jones and curling home an unstoppable shot.

“It was a beautiful goal and I’m so happy to score my first goal at St Mary’s,” Boufal told the club’s official website.

"I want to say thank you for the support of all the fans who came. I’m so happy to play 90 minutes as it’s good for the confidence and for my body. It was a great night for me.

“I’d like to say thank you to my teammates and to all the medical staff. The goal isn’t just for me, it’s for everyone.”

Oriol Romeu emerges from Chelsea spell to star for Southampton

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu has taken the long way round since first being identified as a future star by Pep Guardiola as a youngster but the Southampton midfielder is finally fulfilling that potential this season.

As a 13-year-old schoolboy, Romeu was poached by Barcelona from the academy of cross-city rivals Espanyol before being handed his first team debut by master tactician Guardiola a month before his 19th birthday.

However, Romeu’s hopes of establishing himself in Guardiola’s star-studded lineup were dashed, largely by the acquisition of fellow midfield enforcer Javier Mascherano from Liverpool.

Guardiola reluctantly sold Romeu to Chelsea in 2011 with the Spaniard having made just a solitary La Liga appearance.

But his Stamford Bridge career also proved unmemorable and his 22 Premier League outings under four different managers were strung out over four years, disrupted by a serious knee injury.

When he was signed by Southampton for £5million at the start of last season, following loan spells at Valencia and Stuttgart – during which he hardly set the world alight – his arrival was greeted by a muted response from the club’s supporters.

Romeu did little to change their view in his maiden season on the south coast, swapping the Chelsea substitutes’ bench for a new one at St Mary’s.

However, Victor Wanyama’s departure to Tottenham last summer handed Romeu the chance to prove he can hold down a regular starting spot and it is one the shaven-headed ball winner has taken with both hands.

Romeu has seen off the threat to his place posed by Denmark international Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, following his move from German giants Bayern Munich, to start all nine of the club’s Premier League games and their three Europa League matches.

The 6-foot 25-year-old has played a starring role in Saints’ recent resurgence in form, culminating in a man of the match display in last weekend’s impressive 1-1 draw at title-chasing Manchester City.

His role in their new 4-1-2-1-2 system cannot be understated, providing an at times impenetrable shield in front of the defence as the full backs are encouraged to charge forward and join in attacks.

Romeu is also towards the top of the list of players who have made the most interceptions, prompting admiring manager Claude Puel to put him in the frame for a call-up to the Spain national team.

Puel must take a large part of the credit for Romeu’s renaissance after electing not to sign a direct replacement for Kenyan powerhouse Wanyama and putting in extra hours on the training ground working on his ball distribution.

The only thing missing from Romeu’s game is scoring goals – he has netted just one league goal in his career – although this is also a criticism that can be levelled at many of his teammates, who have relied upon top scorer Charlie Austin to convert the bulk of their chances.

But Puel will not be complaining about Romeu’s profligacy as long as he maintains the high standards he has set for the other parts of his game.

It is fitting Puel decided to acknowledge Romeu’s vital contribution to Southampton’s climb to eighth in the table on the eve of his former club Chelsea’s visit to St Mary’s on Sunday.

Despite his lack of game time in west London, Romeu has spoken fondly of his time in the capital. However, he will no doubt be looking to show Chelsea what they are missing and help Southampton maintain their good run of form when the pair meet this Sunday.

Sunderland left stranded in Southampton after more aeroplane problems

Show/hide article…

Sunderland’s problems are continuing to mount after the team were forced to spend an extra night in Southampton when their flight home failed to take off because of thick fog.

Consequently, they arrived back in the North-East less than 48 hours before Saturday’s Premier League match against Arsenal.

The Black Cats were beaten 1-0 in the EFL Cup at St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday night and had been due to make an immediate return to Newcastle from Bournemouth Airport.

However, poor weather conditions meant the flight was cancelled and the team had to find a hotel for the evening.

Manager David Moyes led them on a recovery session on the south coast on Thursday morning before flying back to Newcastle.

Moyes will now have just one day to prepare his bottom-placed side for the visit of the Gunners on Saturday lunchtime.

It is the second time Sunderland have been caught up in aeroplane drama this season.

Moyes had only been in the job for one day when the aircraft carrying the squad to France for a pre-season tour lost power in two of its engines and was forced to make an emergency landing at Manchester Airport.

Midfielder Jack Rodwell later admitted the players thought they were going to die.

Sunderland, meanwhile, are without a win in nine games in the Premier League and are five points from safety with Moyes coming under increasing pressure.

He was sent to the stands in the closing stages at Southampton and later said he had sworn at the fourth official in protest at being denied a penalty.

The FA are yet to confirm if Moyes will be charged over the incident.

The Inside Track: Chelsea

Show/hide article…

How would you sum up Chelsea’s start to the season?

I think it’s been a mixed bag and inevitably so because they’re getting used to a new manager in Antonio Conte and he’s still figuring out the players he can rely on.

He’s changed system because defensively they were having problems last month so there’s inconsistency and it’s been going quite well recently, with three straight league wins, but the strength of the squad was put under question because of result at West Ham in the League Cup.

If you were to offer Chelsea a top four finish right now, I think they’d shake your hand, walk away and be quite happy with that.

What sort of an impact has Antonio Conte made since his arrival?

Overall, you’d have to say it’s been a positive one. He didn’t get all the players he really was looking for in the summer.

I think what has been the most impressive aspect is that he’s probably the first Chelsea coach in a number of years to genuinely arrive at the club and give everyone at the club a clean slate.

He hasn’t picked players on reputation but sort of said look if you perform for me, I’ll pick you. We’ve started to see players who perhaps had no future at the club, for example Victor Moses, reborn under Conte as a right-wing back.

For all the criticism of the Academy, you’re also starting to see youngsters like Nathaniel Chalobah being given a chance in the first-team.

He’s still got a lot to learn but no one can dispute his passion for the job, as anyone who has seen his celebrations on the sidelines will testify!

What has the style of play been like under Conte’s stewardship?

He’s still trying to find a balance but whilst he was very perturbed by the amount of goals they were conceding, he doesn’t want to sacrifice the attacking threat just to keep clean sheets.

It’s still very attacking as the 3-4-3 formation would suggest and it’s not a negative formation. He wants the wing-backs to bomb forward and it also gives Eden Hazard more freedom.

He’s got the best out of Diego Costa who is probably playing his best level of football since joining the club.

It’s entertaining to watch but conversely that means the opposition always have a chance to score so they’re involved in a lot of end-to-end kind of games which is perhaps not what they’ve been renowned for in the Roman Abramovich era.

Who have been the key men so far this season?

You can’t not mention N’Golo Kante who is clearly the best signing Chelsea made in the summer and arguably one of the best signings anyone made.

For £32m I think it’s an absolute steal as he’s been tremendous most weeks. They have moved his position as he was originally in more of a 4-1-4-1 formation.

He was being picked as a shield in front of the back four but it stifled some of his more attacking attributes, and in the 3-4-3 system he’s much more of a box-to-box midfielder.

Also, Nemanja Matic was someone who spent a good year in the doldrums but next to Kante he has rediscovered his form and those two form an impressive duo.

What sort of game are you expecting?

I’m expecting a tough game for Chelsea because Southampton have been in good form and it’s great to see Charlie Austin scoring goals.

At QPR it was clear to see his ability and he’ll give Chelsea’s defence a tough afternoon.

Chelsea nicked a win last season but St Mary’s is a difficult place to go and I think if they win this one they’ll be very happy going back up the M3 afterwards.

If nothing else, I think it’ll be an entertaining game with lots of action at both ends which is what any football fan wants.

Sunderland’s plane accurately sums up their season as it refuses to take off

Show/hide article…

Just when you thought nothing else could possibly go wrong for Sunderland, it does.

Still winless in the Premier League, the Mackems tumbled out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night when they lost 1-0 all way down the other end of the country at Southampton .

And given that they were so far from home, David Moyes and his squad would have loved nothing more than to get home quickly and prepare for Saturday lunchtime’s clash with Arsenal.

But then their plane wouldn’t start.

Thick fog meant that the flight was cancelled on security grounds, with the players forced to stay on the south coast before flying back early on Thursday afternoon.

Hardly the best preparation for Moyes ahead of one of his toughest tests of the season.

But as a symbol of Sunderland’s season? Pretty accurate.

WATCH: Southampton club-record signing Sofiane Boufal scores wonder goal in EFL Cup

Show/hide article…

It has been a long time coming.

Sofiane Boufal finally made his first start for Southampton since joining for a club-record fee of £15 million from Ligue 1 side Lille.

The Moroccan international has had to bide his time on the sidelines due to injury and the form of his teammates. But on last night’s evidence, Boufal could become a permanent fixture under Claude Puel.

Boufal provided the moment of magic to send his side through to the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

Producing an immaculate first touch, Boufal let fly with 66 minutes on the clock to condemn Sunderland to another defeat, while whetting the appetites of every Saints fan across the country.

Ward-Prowse senses cup opportunity

Show/hide article…

Ward-Prowse played the duration of the 1-0 win over Sunderland to book a place in the last eight.

And with Arsenal to come in the next round, he believes there is no reason that the club can’t go all way despite that tough test.

“If you want to a competition and a cup you’ve got to beat these teams. It’s not going to be plain sailing all the way,” said Ward-Prowse.

“We’ll look forward to it because we’ve got a good record against Arsenal, particularly in the cup competitions, so that’s a positive to take there.

“It’s a chance to be successful and win a trophy. We want to win a trophy and it’s a great competition to do it in.

“We’re all clued up and we all want to do well so why not go and win it.”

Competing on a number of fronts naturally brings a plethora of different challenges, with a well-populated fixture schedule.

That though, is something the Academy graduate feels is a positive sign of the way the club is progressing, as opposed to the hinderance it may appear from the outside looking in.

He added: “It’s exciting, we’ve got a lot of games coming up and there’s going to be different stimuluses on each game so bring it on.

“I think it’s part of the level we’re at now. We’re one of the top teams in the Premier League and we want to be in the best competitions and winning as many things as we can.

“There’s going to be an array of games but the manager has made changes, he’s brought in young players and we’ve had different things to face but we’ve stood up to it well.

“Every player goes out on to the pitch knowing the manager is behind them.”

Paul Merson’s predictions: Chelsea to drop points? Man City to bounce back?

Show/hide article…

Sky Sports football pundit Paul Merson is back with another round of Premier League predictions.

The ‘Magic Man’ failed to predict a perfect score last week but still got five results correct, including Chelsea’s win over Manchester United and West Ham’s triumph over Sunderland.

Here is how Merse got on last time out…

And here is what he is tipping this weekend…

This is a terrible game for Sunderland, who are struggling big time. I just can’t see where that first win is going to come from and I really doubt it will be against Arsenal this weekend.

Middlesbrough caused them a few problems at the Emirates, but the Gunners were poor and I don’t think they’ll be that bad again.

I know Olivier Giroud came back in the midweek EFL Cup win, but I wouldn’t be tempted to throw him in from the start on Saturday.

The turning point for Everton was the Norwich defeat. They’re not going down, they’re not challenging for the title and they’re not in Europe so a cup run would have been ideal.

But the way Ronald Koeman treated that game was worrying and they haven’t won since.

West Ham have had three big results in a row and this game looks more difficult than it did a few weeks ago, but Romelu Lukaku loves a goal against the Hammers and I think he nets again.

Southampton have only lost one in their last 10 and this is a really difficult match for Chelsea.

I’m surprised they went out of the EFL Cup in the manner they did. They’re playing once a week and should have highlighted that as a must-win competition. They missed a trick there.

Claude Puel’s side will put up a real fight on Sunday because they are extremely difficult to break down and a threat going forward.

I’m picking a draw but if Chelsea do manage to get a win at St Mary’s, you need to put them back up as contenders.

It was only a matter of time before Stoke got back on track. Xherdan Shaqiri was 10 out of 10 for them against Hull - not many players in the Premier League can put in a display like he did last week.

The problem is we don’t see that kind of performance often enough from him. You can’t play a 10 every week - only Lionel Messi does that - but you need to be a seven at least. He’s far too up and down.

Stoke have showed they are a good team, though, and I expect them to make it three in a row on Monday.

A massive game for Pep Guardiola. It’s six without a win now, and this is a difficult away match before facing Barcelona again next week.

Before you know it, it could be eight winless games and that’s a lot considering the quality they have in their team.

West Brom have been doing well at home recently, getting a draw against Tottenham and beating West Ham, and they will threaten Man City from set pieces, but I think Guardiola brings back his big names and they squeak a result.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Claudio Ranieri rested his stars again with Copenhagen to come in the Champions League. That’s the priority now and if they can get a result in Denmark, qualification is done and dusted.

It’s an interesting game for Tottenham because they’re coming off a draw against Bournemouth, and if they drop points on Saturday, their next league game is away at Arsenal after a Champions League tie. It’s potentially a tricky little run so it makes beating Leicester quite important.

I expect them to do it with Ranieri naming a similar team to the one that lost to Chelsea.

I watched Hull against Bournemouth and they were all over the shop, and then Stoke played them off the park a week later. It’s not looking good.

They had a positive result in the EFL Cup to stop the rot, but the Premier League is a much tougher challenge and Watford are a good team.

They should get the job done at home to extend Hull’s wait for a win.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was a world-class striker but he’s not anymore. He is 35 and playing in the hardest league in the world so as the season goes on, I can’t see him getting better.

Jose Mourinho will obviously stick with him despite his recent struggles and he should get a few opportunities against Burnley, who haven’t looked up to scratch away from Turf Moor.

It looks like a routine home win to follow up Wednesday’s big result over rivals Manchester City.

Middlesbrough created some great chances at the Emirates but they struggle to score and that could be their downfall.

I would go with Adama Traore from the start against Bournemouth. He gives them pace, provides a real outlet and offers something different in attack, which is especially important against an Eddie Howe team that likes to play an expansive style of football.

Howe’s side have impressed me in recent weeks. They did well against Watford, thrashed Hull and played very good football against Spurs, and I think they’ll pick up three points on the road this weekend.

Everybody is talking Liverpool up as contenders for the title but a trip to Palace is a stiff examination of their credentials.

Alan Pardew seems to be one of those managers that blows hot and cold because his side either win six on the trot or lose six.

The defeat at Leicester was their second on the bounce and they face a big test themselves on Saturday.

If Palace defend like they did at Leicester, they won’t get anything from this game but they’re a better team than the last two games and will take something from this match.

There’s another £250,000 jackpot up for grabs in Soccer Saturday Super 6 game. All you have to do is predict the scores of six selected matches from the Premier League and Sky Bet Championship. It’s free to play so get your entry in before 3pm for the chance to win. ENTER HERE

Why Sadio Mane is on track to outdo both Suarez and Torres at Liverpool

Show/hide article…

He runs, he scores, he copies celebrations.

Sadio Mane is proving to be a huge hit at Liverpool ever since his big-money move from Southampton in the summer, with his displays one of the key reasons behind the great form of Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Senegalese flyer has struck up an intelligent understanding with teammates Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho as the trio have ran amok in the Premier League.

And that has led to Mane’s stats for this season looking seriously impressive.

And as noticed by our friends at the Liverpool Echo, Mane’s start to his Liverpool career has been even better than two of their recent greats.

Because after his goal and assist against West Brom last weekend, Mane has scored four times - against Arsenal, Leicester, Hull and the Baggies - and laid on two goals in his first eight Reds league games.

That compares favourably with Luis Suarez’s record of two goals and three assists from his first eight in the league, and while Fernando Torres also managed four goals, he could only boast one assist.

Undisputed proof, then, of Mane’s terrific form as he hits the ground running with Liverpool.

Can he go on to be as effective as those two?
