Olomola delighted for close friend Boufal

Show/hide article…

The young forward has struck up a friendship with the club-record signing since his arrival from Lille in the summer, and partnered him in attack during the EFL Cup fourth round tie.

Olomola was one of the first players to congratulate his teammate on his match-winner, and he explained more on their relationship both on and off the field.

He said: “Me and Sofiane get on quite well and he’s a very good player as you can see from that goal.

“I can’t wait to see in the Premier League now. I’m delighted for him because he’s a real favourite in the changing room.

“He’s a great person who is always up for a laugh and joke, he gets on with anyway so I’m happy for him.”

Premier League questions: Zlatan to get back among goals? Man City to rediscover winning touch?

Show/hide article…

After a week of EFL Cup action, the Premier League returns this weekend with plenty of tasty ties taking place across the country.

Sky Sports is again at the heart of the action and we kick off on Saturday lunchtime as winless Sunderland welcome Arsenal, live on Sky Sports 1HD, before Jeff Stelling and the Soccer Saturday pundits take you through the 3pm fixtures, which includes Tottenham hosting champions Leicester and Manchester United welcoming Burnley, before Liverpool travel to Crystal Palace in the evening fixture.

Nissan Super Sunday serves up two crackers as Everton host West Ham before Chelsea travel to Southampton, with Stoke v Swansea rounding off the weekend live on Monday Night Football.

Here’s a look at 10 key talking points ahead of the weekend’s action…

It has been a torrid time for David Moyes at Sunderland so far. The former Manchester United boss is yet to win with his new side in the Premier League, with the Black Cats currently sitting rock bottom of the table with two points from nine games.

Sunderland were narrowly beaten by West Ham last weekend and Southampton in the midweek EFL Cup fixture while Arsenal were held to a 0-0 draw by Middlesbrough last weekend.

However, the Gunners are unbeaten in all competitions since the opening day loss to Liverpool, while Sunderland have not been able to beat their north London opponents in the top flight since a 1-0 home win in November 2009.

It has been a fairly successful start for Zlatan Ibrahimvoic since his move to Manchester United, netting five goals in his opening five games including four in the Premier League.

But the 35-year-old is currently on an uncharacteristicly barren run, going five league games without scoring for the first time since September 2010. He last went longer without a goal with Inter Milan in December 2007 (six games).

Ibrahimovic will certainly be wanting to rectify this against a Burnley side who have lost each of their three away games this season, shipping three goals in each match.

United are also unbeaten in their last 12 home league fixtures against the Clarets, and will be hoping to take momentum from their EFL Cup victory over local rivals Man City into the Premier League this weekend.

Middlesbrough and Bournemouth have met 15 times before in competitive matches, but Saturday will see their first ever meeting in English football’s top tier.

Boro have not registered a victory over their south coast opponents since a 2-1 League Cup win in October 1991, while the Cherries won their last meeting in the Sky Bet Championship along with three draws during their time in the division.

The two sides have certainly begun the Premier League season with differing form. Middlesbrough have picked up just one win, while Bournemouth are unbeaten in their last four games, with three victories so far.

Tottenham made a great start to the new season, but recent results have dipped with Mauricio Pochettino’s men suffering their first domestic defeat of the term against Liverpool in the EFL Cup after two successive league draws.

But they still sit in a tight top five - one point off top spot - and remain unbeaten in the Premier League, with Leicester picking up their first win in three top flight games against Crystal Palace last weekend.

The Foxes are currently 12th in the Premier League table, eight points behind their opponents on Saturday, with the two sides having played each other four times last season.

There was little to separate the sides with two draws - once in the league and another in the FA Cup - before Leicester emerged victorious in the meeting at White Hart Lane in the Premier League before Spurs won the cup replay at the King Power a week later.

This meeting will be another fixture that will be played for the first time in the Premier League this weekend, and Troy Deeney could net his 100th goal for Watford in all competitions.

Only Luther Blissett, Tommy Barnett, Ross Jenkins and Cliff Holton have previously reached the century for the club and the signs are pointing towards a century on Saturday.

The Hornets skipper has already scored three times this season - all in the Premier League - to take his total to 99 and has also netted in the last three games he has played against Hull.

Add this to a run of bad form for the Tigers, who have lost each of their last five league fixtures and conceded at least five goals in their last two away games, and Deeney will be eyeing the milestone on Saturday afternoon.

It’s been a strange few weeks for Pep Guardiola. After winning ten consecutive games in all competitions, Manchester City have failed to win any of the last six.

This includes two draws and a loss in the Premier League, as well as a Manchester derby defeat to Manchester United in the EFL Cup on Wednesday evening with the run the longest the Spaniard has ever gone without winning with any club he has managed.

However, City haven’t lost a league game against West Brom since December 2008 - suffering a 2-1 defeat at the Hawthorns - while the Baggies have similarly failed to win any of their last four fixtures in the Premier League.

Liverpool are on a hot streak at the moment. They are sitting in the top three of the Premier League, only behind Arsenal and Manchester City on goal difference, and are unbeaten in their last ten games in all competitions.

They will also come up against Christian Benteke for the first time since his summer move from the Reds to Crystal Palace - the Belgium international has netted three times for the Eagles so far this season.

Expect some goals at Selhurst Park with neither side have a particularly solid defence, with Palace failing to keep a clean sheet in their last 14 Premier League games and Liverpool failing to shut out the opposition in their last 10 away league games.

Romelu Lukaku could get Nissan Super Sunday off to a flying start as he faces his favourite team to score against in West Ham.

The Belgium international has netted eight times in ten games against the Hammers in all competitions - the most he has scored against a single opponent since moving to English shores - and will potentially join an illustrious group this weekend.

The Belgian striker has registered goals in his last six Premier League games against the east Londoners and could become only the third player to score in seven successive league games against the same club after Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink - also against West Ham - and Robin van Persie against Stoke, who managed to do so eight times.

Everton could use a victory this weekend having failed to win in their last four Premier League outings, while the Hammers are starting to find their form having won their last two games and knocked Chelsea out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

It will be a battle of wills when Southampton welcome Chelsea to St Mary’s on Nissan Super Sunday, as the Premier League’s joint-second best defence faces the joint-second best attack.

The Saints have conceded just eight goals in nine games so far this season - half of which have come from the penalty spot - which is level with Everton and only behind Tottenham (four).

On the opposite end, Chelsea have netted 19 times so far this season - including seven in their last two Premier League outings - which is the same as Arsenal and one goal behind Liverpool and Man City (20).

Both sides are also enjoying good league form to set up a very tasty tie on Sky Sports this weekend.

Stoke have made a slow start to the Premier League season, but have finally hit their stride with two consecutive 2-0 victories and four unbeaten games in the top flight.

Joe Allen and Xherdan Shaqiri have been the stars of the show over the last few weeks as the Potters begin to pull away from the relegation zone where Swansea still sit in 19th place.

Stoke have also never lost at home to the Swans in the Premier League (W3 D2), with Bob Bradley still searching for his first victory since taking over as manager a few weeks ago.

How did the Premier League young guns fare in the EFL Cup 4th round?

Show/hide article…

Like Tuesday’s bout of EFL Cup matches, Wednesday’s fourth-round encounters gave fans a glimpse into the future with many young players blooded.

Despite there being London and Manchester derbies played, Antonio Conte and Pep Guardiola stuck to their word about rotating their squads.

Sportsmail assesses the performances of the young stars that played.

Made his first start for the club but failed to breach the Sunderland defence. Replaced by Nathan Redmond on 72 minutes.

Made his third start in a row with injuries to Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett. Provided a nice outlet in attack and kept a clean sheet too.

Came on midway through the first half for Jay Rodriguez after the latter had clashed heads with Sunderland defender Billy Jones.

Substituted with only eight minutes remaining but acquitted himself well in his second start for the Saints this term.

Like Reed, will be pleased to have kept a clean sheet.

Came on with three minutes remaining for Duncan Watmore. Couldn’t affect the match in such a short space of time.

The matchwinner in a local derby. Scored the decisive goal with a slightly-deflected left-footed effort to give West Ham a 2-0 lead before being subsituted on 67 minutes.

Got forward at every opportunity but was a mixed bag in defence as he played out of position in a left wing-back role. Replaced by Pedro in the second half.

Was tidy in possession but struggled against the physciality of Mark Noble and Pedro Obiang at times in the middle of the park. Was subsituted in place of Eden Hazard as the Blues chased a way back into the match.

The likes of teenager Marcus Rashford played, but he is now very much a first-team established star.

Had to deal with the threat of Rashford, and then Paul Pogba, but handled his task admirably. Made a good block to deny the former in the first half.

Neat and tidy in possession, the teenager grew in confidence as the match wore on at Old Trafford in the first half. Faded after the interval but Guardiola would have been pleased with what he saw.

Boufal delights in ‘goal for everyone’ as record signing hits winner

Show/hide article…

Sofiane Boufal is out to make up for lost time after a stunning home debut for Southampton.

The Moroccan winger, Saints’ record £21million summer signing, was out injured for the first two months of the season.

But he marked his belated full debut with a fabulous goal as Claude Puel’s side beat Sunderland 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

In the 66th minute of what had until then been a dull encounter, Boufal brought an up-and-under down with one sublime touch. He then stepped around full-back Billy Jones and curled an unstoppable shot over the diving Jordan Pickford and inside the far post.

‘It was a beautiful goal and I’m so happy to score my first goal at St Mary’s. The goal isn’t just for me it’s for everyone.’ Boufal told the club website.

'I want to say thank you for the support of all the fans who came. I’m so happy to play 90 minutes as it’s good for the confidence and for my body. It was a great night for me.

'The spirit is very strong. My team-mates are so happy for me because they see me come into the club when I couldn’t play.

‘Now they see me score this goal and they’re happy for me so I’d like to say thank you to them and to all the medical staff.’

Sunderland felt hard done by after being denied a late penalty after Maya Yoshida tripped Victor Anichebe in the area, an incident which saw manager David Moyes sent to the stands.

Ultimately Boufal’s goal was a deserving winner and piled more misery onto Sunderland’s under-pressure boss.

Saints’ chance to “put right” failures and win a trophy

Show/hide article…

JAMES Ward-Prowse has urged Saints to atone for last season’s EFL Cup failures.

After Claude Puel’s side progressed to the last eight of the competition with a 1-0 victory over Sunderland at St Mary’s, Ward-Prowse senses an opportunity to win some silverware.

Saints were in the same position in the competition (then called the Capital One Cup) last term, but were smashed 6-1 by Liverpool in the quarter-final on an embarrassing night at St Mary’s.

“We’ve got to put it right,” he said. “You learn from that, but it’s exciting. We’ve got a lot of games coming up. Bring it on.”

“It’s a chance to win a trophy,” he added. “We want to be successful and win a trophy. It’s a great competition to do it in.

“We’re all clued up and we want to do well, so why not go and win it.”

Saints were drawn at Arsenal in the next round, which will take place on 29/30 November, after defeating perennial strugglers Sunderland thanks to a belting goal from £16m record signing Soifane Boufal.

“It was a hard game,” Ward-Prowse said. “Sunderland were always going to make it difficult for us.

“They’re fighting for their lives at the bottom of the Premier League and we needed to be aware of their desire to come and win the game.

“Sofiane created a bit of magic. It’s what the game needed and ultimately won us the game.”

“We knew it would be a tough battle,” he continued. “We knew it was probably going to be more a war than a football match.”

Ward-Prowse lined up alongside four fellow academy graduates from the start against the Black Cats.

Jack Stephens, Sam McQueen, Harrison Reed, Lloyd Isgrove started and, another Staplewood man, Olufela Olomola, was introduced in the first half after Jay Rodriguez was injured.

The inexperienced side laboured to victory. Ward-Prowse accepts that it was tough to play without a number of key players.

“It’s difficult because they don’t play as regularly, so they might not be aware of the roles and responsibilities in the system,” he said.

“But that’s our role as more senior lads to make sure that they’re clued in to what they’re doing.

“It’s part of the job and we have to make sure we do everything to help them.”

Rodriguez was substituted on 26 minutes and Sunderland managed to get a foothold on the game.

Ward-Prowse admitted that the striker’s departure from the game disrupted them.

“It’s difficult to lose a player if you’ve worked on team shape the day before,” he said. “Your plan goes out the window, but credit to Fela Olomola who came on and did his part.

“The team did well to stay in there and create the chances.”

Yoshida: Squad is important

Show/hide article…

Maya Yoshida was pleased to come through the full 90 minutes of Southampton’s EFL Cup victory over Sunderland and says he feeling the benefits of squad rotation.

Having played in Milan last week but not the trip to Manchester City, Yoshida was restored to the starting eleven for the visit of Sunderland and helped Claude Puel’s side to a clean sheet in their 1-0 win over the Black Cats.

Yoshida was one of the older heads in a young team on the night which started with five academy graduates in the team.

“It’s always important for the team to have a chance to give opportunities to the young lads and for me it was very important to get playing time in a week where we have the cup, the league and European matches, I can get minutes myself and conditioning,” said Yoshida.

“It’s important for myself to show to the manager my performances and take opportunities when they come.

“It’s important to stay solid as a team because we have two games every week into the New Year and it’s important for everyone to be fit to make the squad good.”

Now in his fifth season and fourth manager with Saints, Yoshida says he’s developing his game as he continues to enjoy his time at the club.

“There are many games coming and I have learned many things in the past four years,” he said. “Sometimes I play a lot and sometimes not. Last season I got a chance to play at right back or left back but maybe I couldn’t how enough to the manager. At the end of the season I didn’t play a long time so from that point I knew I needed to be fit and ready to show myself every week.

“Playing in the Premier League is always good and nice to play in, but the cup is also good for me.

“I’m feeling much better than last season, and it’s a huge opportunity to get a title for the club, so we’re going for it.”

RANKED! The Premier League’s top crossers after nine games in 2016/17, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City stars

Show/hide article…

As target men become increasingly uncommon in the Premier League, is crossing still effective?

After just nine games, Premier League statistics suggest so.

Of the top ten crossers in the top flight, they have collectively hit a total of 588 balls into the box - there aren’t many better ways to get an assist.

Some sides are assembled with wingers and big strikers to encourage this sort of play, so how effective is their system?

Made up of four Englishmen in total, talkSPORT has done the number crunching and put together a top ten.

Click the right arrow, above, to see how makes the list of crossers - unsurprisingly all midfielders - in the Premier League this season, from least to most…

Fan happiness index: Which Premier League club has given its supporters reason to cheer, or be sad?

Show/hide article…

We’re nearly a quarter of the way through the Premier League season and, therefore, have seen just about enough to get a gauge as to how clubs are performing and whether supporters should be happy (or deeply unhappy).

Here Telegraph Sport ranks each club on a happiness rating with reasons to worry and reasons to feel positive.

Teams are ranked on league position compared to last, current form, number of wins against defeats and how their summer recruitment has panned out. -10 is ‘very unhappy’, 0 is ‘could go either way’ and +10 is ‘very happy’.

Oh, Sunderland. Even on the trajectory of seasons gone by this is a pretty sad beginning with no wins in nine games and only six goals scored. You probably don’t need reminding of that, sorry.

Reasons for unhappiness: The Black Cats are second bottom of the form table, bottom of the actual table, looking for a first win, projected to finish with around 10 points in May. Yeah, there are plenty.

Reasons for optimism: Sunderland have not quite been here before, but not far off. Swansea, Middlesbrough and Hull are within five points, too, which suggests the bottom three isn’t definitely set yet.

If one fan tweet could sum up the current mood:
