Sunderland manager David Moyes slapped with FA charge after Southampton dismissal

Show/hide article…

“Sunderland manager David Moyes has been charged by the FA after his Southampton sending off” He’s been given until 6pm Tuesday to respond to his misconduct charge - but he’s already said he won’t appeal any sanction. Under-pressure Moyes was furious his Sunderland team were not awarded a late penalty in the EFL Cup defeat. The Scot felt his side deserved a spot kick after Victor Anichebe was bundled over in the area by Maya Yoshida.

He let fourth official James Adcock know about it - and refreee Chris Kavanagh promptly sent Moyes to the stands. Speaking after the game, Moyes explained why he’d been sent to the stands: “I was sent off for leaving my box and sent off for swearing, so it was correct. “The decision to send me off was correct. It was the fourth official who chased me down the touchline. “I swore at him which I shouldn’t have done. “No problem, I deserved to be sent off. “But I think they should look at the reason why I was [upset].”

On the penalty claim, Moyes added: “I think if you see it again, you’ll see it’s a stonewaller. “It was inside the box and Yoshida fouled Victor, going across him. “It should definitely have been a penalty kick. “I’m disappointed we are out of the cup, that’s the big thing. “We should have had a chance to take a penalty kick and if we had scored it, to go to extra-time, but it didn’t happen.” Southampton were drawn away to Arsenal in the quarter-finals after their 1-0 win.

Sunderland stranded in Southampton as charter-flight home is grounded

Show/hide article…

David Moyes suffered more torture as Sunderland 's wooden spoonists were stranded in Southampton by fog.

The Black Cats’ late-night charter flight back to the north-east after their 1-0 defeat in the EFL Cup at St Mary’s was grounded on the runway and they were forced to stay overnight on the south coast.

Moyes, rock-bottom with only two points from nine Premier League games, was sent to the stands for swearing at fourth official James Adcock as Sunderland slumped to their eighth defeat in 12 matches.

And he hasn’t the foggiest idea how Sunderland failed to take Saints to extra time after they were beaten by £21 million record signing Sofiane Boufal’s wonder goal on his Saints hoem debut.

The hapless former Manchester United boss organised a light recovery session for his squad before they finally completed the 645-mile round trip from Wearside a day late.

Beleaguered Moyes’ task is not about to become any easier, with Arsenal heading to the Stadium of Light on Saturday, and England Under-21 striker Duncan Watmore says Sunderland have got to start making their own luck instead of cursing the fortune.

He said: “We’ve got to keep going – sometimes you’ve got to earn your luck. You can’t let it bother you and you have to keep doing the right things.

“You feel like you’re playing well, but it’s not well enough. We need to change it quick and we know that.

“It’s hard when you keep losing, but there were positives at Southampton. We felt like we had chances, we could have had a penalty and we hit the post – things happened and it could have been different.

“As a team I think you’ve got to look at the things you’re doing right and make sure you eliminate the things you’re doing wrong from the next game. If you have that mentality, you can improve.”

SAINTS: Chelsea edition now available

Show/hide article…

It’s a Halloween special front cover for the latest edition of the club’s official matchday magazine, as Chelsea visit in the Premier League.

Remember, you can find copies of all this season’s editions of SAINTS on our partner site: saintsmagazines.co.uk.

Our ghoulish cover star is Oriol Romeu whose menacing presence on the pitch has made him one of the most feared midfielders for opponents so far this season.

The former Chelsea man discusses the physical aspect of his game and how it compares with the more relaxed character he shows off the pitch in our main feature interview.

Another man who has played for Chelsea and Southampton is Ken Monkou, and we caught up with the Dutchman to recall his time on the south coast as well as finding out what he’s up to now.

This issue also covers the club’s tribute led fixture of All Saints Day where we remember the lives of those lost in connection to Southampton FC. We pay tribute to the former players, staff and supporters that are sadly no longer with us.

Elsewhere, SAINTS columnist Franny Benali has penned his thoughts on the team’s form and what he expects from the game against Chelsea.

There’s an in-depth look at Sunday’s opponents, as well as tactical insight on them and a look at Claude Puel’s early approach thanks to Sam Tighe from Bleacher Report.

What’s more, you can read the views of first team manager Claude Puel and captain José Fonte, as well as discover the latest news from the academy and Saints Foundation.

Fans’ firsts explores Southampton supporter memories, while there also all the latest ticket news and on-sale dates for future matches.

Premier League preview: Southampton vs Chelsea

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte will be looking for his Chelsea side to get back to winning ways following their exit from the Cup when the Blues travel to take on Southampton this weekend.

Chelsea were knocked out of the EFL Cup by London rivals West Ham on Wednesday despite going into the game at the London Stadium off the back of three straight victories in the league - including a 4-0 thumping of Manchester United.

With attention turning back to the top flight this weekend, Chelsea will take on a Southampton team who managed to hold leaders Manchester City to a 1-1 draw last weekend, a result that helped the team consolidate their position in eighth place.

To add, the Saints are still in the EFL Cup after beating Sunderland 1-0, and are therefore likely to prove tough opposition for Conte and his team.

Read on to find out more about the Premier League fixture between Southampton and Chelsea.

Southampton host Chelsea at St Mary’s Stadium on Sunday 30 October at 4pm.

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports 1 from 3.30pm, but Standard Sport will also have all the build-up, action and reaction from 3pm onward.

Conte is likely to revert back to the starting XI that beat United so comfortably last week, with Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso set to start as the team’s wing-backs.

Whether John Terry will keep his place in defence remains to be seen after the Chelsea skipper endured a tough night against West Ham on his return from injury. Fellow defender Kurt Zouma is expected to re-join first-team training on Thursday but the game is likely to come too soon for him.

Saints manager Claude Puel, meanwhile, has several injuries to contend with including Jay Rodriguez, Matt Targett, Shane Long, Ryan Bertrand, Cedric Soares and Jeremy Pied.

Adam Lallana is blown away by how quickly Reds new boy has settled at Liverpool

Show/hide article…

Adam Lallana has admitted he is amazed at how quickly new Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane has settled in at the club.

The Senegalese forward arrived at Anfield from Southampton in the summer, and has notched four goals and two assists in eight Premier League starts.

And the 24-year-old’s impact has been so immediate that it has taken his fellow former Saint by surpirse.

“I sit next to Sadio in the dressing room and I can’t believe how quickly he’s got into his rhythm,” Lallana told Sport Magazine.

"He’s the Sadio we played against last season who was so good against us – especially at St Mary’s.

“Comparing it to myself, when I came in, it probably took me a bit more time to settle. So credit to him, because it’s never easy coming to a big club.”

The £34million signing has quickly established himself as a key player in the squad, leaving the likes of Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi having to settle for a place on the bench.

Without European competition this season there are fewer games for Jurgen Klopp to rotate and competition is fierce, but Lallana says that has had a positive impact on the quality of training.

"[Not being in Europe] means a lot of players could possibly not be playing, but it also means the quality in training and the fight for places is so big.

"That’s a good thing – it keeps everyone on their toes, so the standard in training is always at a high level.

"We’re on the training pitch a lot more this season, which means we’ve got more days to be able to work on certain things tactically that the manager wants – and we’re seeing that pay off.”

Saints’ inaugural coaches conference hailed a success

Show/hide article…

The coaches gained more of an understanding of how we deliver a high-performing Academy, with four days of seminars and practical sessions at the home of partner club, Soccer Association of Columbia in Maryland.

Club coaches from the USA enjoyed sessions delivered by Martin Hunter (Technical Director), Mo Gimpel (Director of Medical & Science Performance), Matt Hale (Academy Manager), Edd Vahid (Head of Coaching and Learning), Vince Bartram (Academy Goalkeeping Coach) and Matt Depledge (Academy Strength and Conditioning Coach) from our Academy.

Saints’ group of staff provided insights that clubs have already been putting in to place, so they can become high performing soccer organisations with a focus on coach and player development.

One of the coaches from SAC, Ivan Croft who has over 27 years of coaching experience with travel teams to University teams, said: “The conference was fantastic, aligned with best practices in youth player development and coaching and exceeded my expectations.

“The Southampton staff were incredibly knowledgeable, very willing to share their expertise, and clearly have the right long-term objectives and approaches in mind to develop great young players and young men."

As part of the conference, teams from the Baltimore Armour US Development Academy programme worked with our coaches on physical and goalkeeping sessions, and Saints’ Academy Under-14 boys team took part in a technical session delivered by Martin Hunter.

Southampton U14s and Baltimore Armour U14s also played a game where coaches attending the conference received coaching points from Matt Hale that demonstrated the long-term process of development we use to produce players for our first team and international football.

The first conference was a chance for Southampton Football Club to deliver content to clubs in the USA and set out its standard for club partnerships that are focussed on player development and a having long-term relationship.

The annual conference will become a cornerstone of the program, aligning with our open dialogue with clubs about how we can help them turn their potential into excellence.

Details of the next conference will be available by the end of this year and will be open to coaches from non-partner clubs.

There will be exclusive content that is available only to partner clubs, so if you would like to discuss becoming a Partner Club, please contact Matt Sanger on msanger@saintsfc.co.uk.

Sofiane Boufal pumps break on fitness expectations: He’s not ready for 90 minutes

Show/hide article…

Moroccan magician Boufal capped a stunning start to life at St Mary’s with a wonder strike to knock Sunderland out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

But despite having to push through the full game due to Jay Rodriguez’s head injury, £16m man Boufal has warned Saints fans it will be a while before they see him playing entire matches on a regular basis.

Boufal is still nursing himself to full fitness after five months out with a knee injury – and is expected to be back on the bench against Chelsea on Sunday.

The former Lille man said: “I’m so happy to play 90 minutes as it’s good for the confidence and for my body.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte missed a trick: Paul Merson reckons Blues boss has slipped up

Show/hide article…

Chelsea crashed out to London rivals West Ham on Wednesday. Antonio Conte made big changes from the side which thrashed Manchester United 4-0 on Sunday for the trip across the capital. And Merson reckons that was the wrong call.

He told Sky Sports: “I’m surprised they went out of the EFL Cup in the manner they did.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte got it wrong against West Ham according to Paul Merson “They’re playing once a week and should have highlighted that as a must-win competition. Chelsea head to Southampton on Sunday and Merse can’t separate the teams.

“Southampton have only lost one in their last 10 and this is a really difficult match for Chelsea. “Claude Puel’s side will put up a real fight on Sunday because they are extremely difficult to break down and a threat going forward. “I’m picking a draw but if Chelsea do manage to get a win at St Mary’s, you need to put them back up as contenders.”
