Former Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu finally shining at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu has had to bide his time for much of his career, but the former Barcelona and Chelsea midfielder is finally shining under Claude Puel at Southampton. Nick Wright charts his rise with the help of the man who brought him through the youth ranks at La Masia.

Even the most optimistic Southampton supporters could have been forgiven for feeling nervous when the transfer window shut without the arrival of a Victor Wanyama replacement. His departure to Tottenham had left a huge hole at the base of their midfield, and a winless start to the Premier League season only added to the anxiety.

As it turns out, they need not have worried. Southampton have made a habit of reinvention, and this year Oriol Romeu has been the biggest success story. The 25-year-old Spaniard started fewer than half of the Saints’ Premier League games in his first campaign on the south coast, but he has stepped into Wanyama’s shoes and made an impressive impact this season.

Southampton are looking up again. Romeu has played every minute of their five-game unbeaten run, and on Sunday in front of Pep Guardiola, the manager who gave him his debut at Barcelona back in 2010, he produced a man-of-the-match performance as Southampton claimed a 1-1 draw at Manchester City.

Romeu might have lined up for the other side had things worked out differently, but this weekend he will be eager to impress more familiar faces when Southampton face his old club Chelsea. It’s another stern test for Claude Puel’s side, and for Romeu it’s another reminder of a long, frustrating journey that began on the training pitches of La Masia.

“He came to us from Espanyol’s academy when he was 13,” former Barcelona youth coach Pedro Abraham tells Sky Sports. “The first year was difficult for him. He found it difficult to be an important player, but gradually he became indispensable. He was very intelligent and very serious. That was important for his development. He improved every year.”

In a youth team that included attacking talents such as Thiago Alcantara and Christian Tello, Romeu was the no-frills holding midfielder who held it all together. He did the dirty work, as Abraham calls it. El trabajo sucio. “It was a very good generation,” says Abraham. “Oriol played as the pivote in front of Marc Bartra and Martin Montoya, with Thiago further forwards.”

Thiago was the rising star - “He had it all,” recalls Abraham - but Romeu quietly carved out a reputation of his own. “He was quite slow and didn’t have an explosive turn of pace, but he knew how to use his body very well,” says Abraham. “He knew how to anticipate the play so you didn’t see his lack of pace. By the time he was 15 or 16, you could see he was going to make it at the top level.”

Romeu went on to become a key player in Luis Enrique’s Barcelona B, and it looked like he was destined for the first-team when Guardiola thrust him into the starting lineup for a Spanish Super Cup clash with Sevilla. Romeu acquitted himself well, but Barcelona had signed Javier Mascherano that summer. The youngster slipped down the pecking order before accepting an offer from Chelsea in 2011.

Andre Villas-Boas said Romeu had a “brilliant future” when he was unveiled at Stamford Bridge alongside Romelu Lukaku. He soon broke into the team, but Chelsea were in the midst of a tumultuous period. Villas-Boas was sacked in March 2012, and Romeu only made two further appearances under Roberto Di Matteo that season.

Romeu’s prospects looked brighter when Rafa Benitez took over from Di Matteo, but a cruciate knee ligament injury in December 2012 was the next roadblock. The midfielder was ruled out for the rest of the season, and when he returned to fitness, Benitez had been replaced by Jose Mourinho and Romeu was sent on loan to Valencia.

His progress was hampered by more injuries on his return to Spain, and there was further misfortune when he moved to Stuttgart for the 2014/15 campaign. The Bundesliga side sacked their manager Armin Veh after just three months, and Romeu spent the season battling against relegation in an unfamiliar environment.

It was not easy. Between signing for Chelsea in 2011 and returning from his loan spell in Germany in 2015, Romeu had played under eight different managers in three different countries. It is only now, a year after making his permanent switch to St Mary’s, that he has finally found stability. It is only now that he is finally fulfilling his potential.

“He needed that,” says Abraham, who has kept in touch with Romeu. “It’s like when he came to Barcelona. He needed continuity and he needed to feel important. It was difficult for him at Chelsea after Villas-Boas left, but he’s an intelligent boy and he’s humble. He kept working and working and working and he has made the most of his opportunity.”

Romeu has been one of the Premier League’s best ball-winning midfielders this season. Danny Drinkwater, N’Golo Kante and Jordan Henderson are the only outfield players to have recovered possession more times (76), and the Spaniard made more tackles against Manchester City (eight) than any other Southampton player has managed in a single game all season.

Other areas of his game still need work, but Romeu is getting better with the ball, too. His passing accuracy has improved in each of the last three seasons, and Puel insisted he should be in contention for his first senior Spain call-up after he was named Southampton’s player of the month for September. “His work in every game is very important to the team,” he said.

Abraham has been similarly impressed. Romeu was seen as a possible heir to Sergio Busquets as a teenager, and his former coach still sees the similarities. “Ok, he’s not Iniesta or Xavi,” he says. “He is more physical than your typical Barcelona player, but for me he has a similar profile to Busquets. He is a bit stronger and not as technical, but he would have fought for that position. He gives a lot of balance to the team.”

He’s certainly striking the right balance for Southampton this season. It’s been a long road for Romeu, but he has offset Wanyama’s departure and the Saints are feeling the benefits. “We are seeing that he can be a fundamental player for his team,” says Abraham. “Now he has many years ahead of him to keep improving.” Southampton will be hoping it continues against Chelsea on Sunday.

Puel expects more Boufal stunners

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel believes Saints will see more stunning goals from Sofiane Boufal after the £16m record signing marked his first start with a brilliant strike to send his new side into the EFL Cup quarter-finals.

The Moroccan lit up a poor match with a truly stunning winner as Saints defeated Sunderland 1-0 at St Mary’s to set up a mouth-watering last eight tie away to Arsenal.

It was a long awaited goal with Saints having had to be patient with Boufal, who arrived at the club still recovering from a knee injury, but it proved worth waiting for.

Puel said: “I am not surprised for his goal because he has the technical to make this situation but it’s fantastic for him and for all the squad, and very important for the future of the squad.

“I think it is a good time to stay patient with him because it is his first game to come back and he doesn’t have the good physical level and he can make progress for the future.

“It was not the plan he play 80 minutes but the situation of the game showed it was important he stayed and he can score this goal which is very important for this squad and to see his qualities.

“We must work on his physical level and also on the play, but sometimes he can do a situation action fantastic.

“It’s a pleasure to see this player.”

Puel indicated that despite Boufal’s stunning goal, he will not rush him into regular first team action as he looks to ensure his new man is available for the long term.

“It’s important to stay patient with him because he is young and he cannot for the moment do all the action and show all his possibilities and like the goal you can see he is an interesting player,” insisted Puel.

“It is important to keep our calm with him and step by step he will have different possibilities to play for the future.

“It is important to keep him fit.”

One of the downsides of the game was another injury for Jay Rodriguez.

The striker had a clash of heads with Billy Jones early in the first half and was later forced off after feeling dizzy.

Puel reported: “He could not continue the game and he goes back home and we will see his situation tomorrow.”

THE VERDICT: Saints stretch squad to the max

Show/hide article…

There is a limit as to just how far you can stretch a squad the size of Saints.

From Claude Puel’s point of view last night’s game was, ultimately, job done.

Saints made it through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup and Puel was able to rest many of the first team regulars he is relying upon to get through this latest crazy run of games.

In that respect his decisions were justified, and when you get a result it is hard to argue.

However, this was a stodgy performance from Saints compared to the standards they have set themselves of late.

They were fortunate to be playing a Sunderland side who were low on confidence and, bluntly, pretty poor.

The match is sure to spark the debate over the use of the club’s academy graduates once again.

It became a very delicate subject during Ronald Koeman’s time in charge.

Behind the scenes there was frustration that Koeman showed little interest in trying to integrate many of the club’s home produced young players into the first team.

That annoyance was only intensified by the fact that Koeman was publically very honest about it.

However, with Koeman a popular and, crucially, successful manager, it would have been inappropriate to complain or be seen to meddle with his ideas, and the club sensibly did the right thing.

The appointment of Puel has given a fresh impetus to the club to be able to try and get the pathway established once again.

Saints want this to happen badly, from a philosophical point of view, and no doubt a business sense as well.

Koeman’s argument would be you can only play if you are good enough.

With this huge raft of games Puel took a look for himself.

The overall verdict would have been that nobody let themselves or the club down and they all gave it a good go, but there is work to do if some of them are to make a major breakthrough.

Lloyd Isgrove, Jack Stephens and Harrison Reed were all given a chance, Sam McQueen stayed in the side and Olufela Olomola was introduced early on.

Some of these players need it to happen for them now if it is to at St Mary’s. Isgrove is 23, Stephens 22, Reed 21.

The likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Nathan Redmond, and James Ward-Prowse are all the same age.

In fairness, it wasn’t easy for them, and maybe they are not helped by the fact that they do not play Puel’s first team formation every week at lower levels.

It also is not easy to just come in and perform, and while it would not be fair to criticise harshly, these are rare chances that need to be taken in the context of a career at that age. When Saints have less fixtures later on this season they may not come around again.

In the end it was a 23-year-old who settled a pretty awful game, with record signing Sofiane Boufal producing the only real take home memory for most fans who packed into three stands – the shutdown Kingsland the only exception.

The first half really was uneventful stuff, though uneventful might be generous.

Saints’ inexperience was showing in so much as the team didn’t look like the normal fluent and cohesive unit that Puel has been able to boast in recent weeks.

That wasn’t helped by the injury to Rodriguez, and the introduction of a debutant in Olomola, but it was a mark of just how low Sunderland have sunk that they never looked like taking advantage, and that despite David Moyes picking a more experienced side than he had hinted at pre-match.

The only real sights of goal for Saints came early and late in the half as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg drilled in a low shot that was blocked and Olomola blasted well over.

For Sunderland, who seemed to have few ideas as to how to break Saints down, there wasn’t a chance at all, merely an unsuccessful half-hearted penalty appeal as Duncan Watmore collided with Sam McQueen and went down in the Saints area.

As for Boufal, there was one mesmerising first half glimpse of skill, as he felt his way into it.

The second period got off to much the same start.

Sunderland did have a couple of wayward early efforts, Patrick van Aanholt sending a free kick over the bar and Watmore slashing wildly off target.

Then came the moment that lit up the match.

Jose Fonte produced a fairly agricultural kind of high clearance on 66 minutes. It fell to Boufal just inside the penalty area on the left side.

The Moroccan took three wonderful touches, the first to bring the ball perfectly under control, the second to shift it out of his feet to give himself a yard and the third to curl a perfect right footed shot into the opposite top corner.

The Black Cats tried to get something out of the game. A combination of Isgrove and the post blocked Paddy McNair’s far post header from a corner, an optimistic penalty shout for handball against Fonte was waved away and sub Jermaine Defoe had a low near post drive blocked by Alex McCarthy.

After Maya Yoshida survived another late penalty appeal David Moyes was sent to the stands for protesting too vociferously.

In the end it was job done.

For Puel, in this kind of run of fixtures, that will be all that counts.

Saints draw Arsenal in EFL Cup quarter-finals

Show/hide article…

Southampton have been drawn away to Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

Saints made it through to the last eight with a 1-0 win over Sunderland at St Mary’s, while Arsenal beat Reading 2-1.

“It’s a good experience but I would like to play of course at home but the same like also to play with young players.

“I don’t know the start of that team at the beginning but it’s a good experience to see what you can do away against Arsenal.

“Hopefully we can recover many players because we have injuries and this is difficult because we play for example with a different right back and all the players had games and it’s important for the game in a few days to recover the players.”

The tie at the Emirates Stadium will be played on 29/30 November.

David Moyes angry at penalty call in Sunderland EFL Cup loss at Southampton

David Moyes insisted his Sunderland team were “robbed” by the officials as they crashed out of the EFL Cup at Southampton.

Sofiane Boufal scored a sensational goal in the 66th-minute to settle Wednesday night’s fourth-round clash at St Mary’s, but might have had a late penalty when Victor Anichebe was felled by Maya Yoshida.

Referee Chris Kavanagh did not award the spot-kick and Moyes was sent to the stands for complaining to the fourth official about the decision.

And he was still angry after the match, insisting his players did not deserve to lose.

“We were robbed in the end not to get a penalty kick,” he said. "The players didn’t deserve to lose tonight.

“I have to say Southampton scored a worldy of a goal, but we didn’t deserve to lose the game, that’s for sure.”

Despite his complaints over the decision, Moyes did not dispute his own sending off.

The Sunderland boss left his technical area and admitted to using bad language towards the fourth official.

“I rightly got sent off,” he added.

“He was right to send me off because I left my box and swore. He was right to send me off and I have no problems with that.”

Saints’ chance to “put right” failures and win a trophy

Show/hide article…

JAMES Ward-Prowse has urged Saints to atone for last season’s EFL Cup failures.

After Claude Puel’s side progressed to the last eight of the competition with a 1-0 victory over Sunderland at St Mary’s, Ward-Prowse senses an opportunity to win some silverware.

Saints were in the same position in the competition (then called the Capital One Cup) last term, but were smashed 6-1 by Liverpool in the quarter-final on an embarrassing night at St Mary’s.

“We’ve got to put it right,” he said. “You learn from that, but it’s exciting. We’ve got a lot of games coming up. Bring it on.”

“It’s a chance to win a trophy,” he added. “We want to be successful and win a trophy. It’s a great competition to do it in.

“We’re all clued up and we want to do well, so why not go and win it.”

Saints were drawn at Arsenal in the next round, which will take place on 29/30 November, after defeating perennial strugglers Sunderland thanks to a belting goal from £16m record signing Soifane Boufal.

“It was a hard game,” Ward-Prowse said. “Sunderland were always going to make it difficult for us.

“They’re fighting for their lives at the bottom of the Premier League and we needed to be aware of their desire to come and win the game.

“Sofiane created a bit of magic. It’s what the game needed and ultimately won us the game.”

“We knew it would be a tough battle,” he continued. “We knew it was probably going to be more a war than a football match.”

Ward-Prowse lined up alongside four fellow academy graduates from the start against the Black Cats.

Jack Stephens, Sam McQueen, Harrison Reed, Lloyd Isgrove started and, another Staplewood man, Olufela Olomola, was introduced in the first half after Jay Rodriguez was injured.

The inexperienced side laboured to victory. Ward-Prowse accepts that it was tough to play without a number of key players.

“It’s difficult because they don’t play as regularly, so they might not be aware of the roles and responsibilities in the system,” he said.

“But that’s our role as more senior lads to make sure that they’re clued in to what they’re doing.

“It’s part of the job and we have to make sure we do everything to help them.”

Rodriguez was substituted on 26 minutes and Sunderland managed to get a foothold on the game.

Ward-Prowse admitted that the striker’s departure from the game disrupted them.

“It’s difficult to lose a player if you’ve worked on team shape the day before,” he said. “Your plan goes out the window, but credit to Fela Olomola who came on and did his part.

“The team did well to stay in there and create the chances.”

Moyes insists ‘I deserved to be sent off’ in Southampton match

Show/hide article…

David Moyes admitted he deserved to be sent to the stands after Sunderland tumbled out of the EFL Cup at Southampton.

The Black Cats boss was furious after his struggling side were denied a late penalty when Maya Yoshida brought down Victor Anichebe in the area.

But the Scot’s industrial language towards fourth official James Adcock earned him his marching orders as Sunderland crashed out to Sofiane Boufal’s strike.

‘I was sent off for leaving my box and swearing at the fourth official,’ Moyes said.

‘The problem was he chased me down the touchline. I swore at him and I shouldn’t have done so I deserved to be sent off.’

Moyes was in no doubt about the late penalty claim which angered him so much but was waved away by ref Chris Kavanagh.

‘When you see it again it’s a stonewaller, no question,’ he added. ‘Inside the box Yoshida fouls Victor, he comes across him, and it should have been a definite penalty awarded.’

Sunderland’s only two wins this season came in this competition and they remain bottom of the Premier League, but Moyes is confident they are close to turning the corner.

‘We didn’t deserve to lose, that’s for sure,’ he said.

‘Our luck’s out, but it will change. The performances are getting better and that will lead to goals and to results. Our last couple of performances have merited more.’

It was Boufal’s night on Wednesday, though, as the club record signing marked his St Mary’s debut with a fabulous strike.

In the 66th minute of what had until then been a dull encounter, the 23-year-old controlled an up-and-under superbly, stepped around Billy Jones and curled an unstoppable shot over the diving Jordan Pickford and inside the far post.

‘You can see his qualities,’ beamed Saints manager Claude Puel. 'You can see he is a fantastic player.

‘It was difficult for us against a strong team. I enjoyed the result, of course, for all my players, the experienced and the young ones.’

Puel fielded six academy graduates in a much-changed line-up, and their reward is a quarter-final trip to meet Arsenal and his fellow Frenchman Arsene Wenger.

‘I would prefer of course to be at home,’ he admitted.

‘But Arsene might play his young players again so it will be a good experience to see what we can do.’

David Moyes defiant despite Sunderland’s exit from EFL Cup

Show/hide article…

David Moyes insists Sunderland are close to turning the corner despite another defeat, this time at Southampton in the EFL Cup.

Sofiane Boufal’s wonder strike knocked the Black Cats, bottom of the Premier League without a win all season, out of the only competition that has provided a glimmer of hope on Wearside.

To add to Moyes’ misery, he was sent to the stands after disputing referee Chris Kavanagh’s decision not to award a last-gasp penalty when Maya Yoshida tripped Victor Anichebe in the area.

But the Sunderland boss said: "We didn’t deserve to lose that’s for sure. We were in the game, we had good chances and I thought the players performed well.

"Our luck’s at the moment out but it will change. The performances are getting better and that will lead to goals and to results. Our last couple of performances have merited more.’’

By contrast to Sunderland, Southampton’s record signing Boufal has hit the ground running as he marked his St Mary’s debut with a fabulous strike.

In the 66th minute of what had until then been a dull encounter, the 23-year-old Moroccan brought an up-and-under down with one sublime touch.

He then stepped around full-back Billy Jones and curled an unstoppable shot over the diving Jordan Pickford and inside the far post.

"I have to say it was a top-class goal,’’ admitted Moyes, while Saints manager Claude Puel beamed: "You can see his qualities. You can see he is a fantastic player.

"It was difficult for us against a strong team. I enjoyed the result, of course, for all my players, the experienced and the young ones.’’

Southampton’s reward is a quarterfinal trip to meet Arsenal and Puel’s fellow Frenchman Arsene Wenger.

"I would prefer of course to be at home,’’ added Puel, who fielded six academy graduates in a much-changed line-up.

"But it will be a good experience to see what we can do.’’
