Olomola: Debut a dream come true

Show/hide article…

Olomola replaced Jay Rodriguez after a clash of heads forced him off after just 26 minutes.

Having impressed in the Under-23 side, the forward was one of six academy graduates on the field as Saints progressed to the Quarter Final for the third consecutive season.

“It was a dream come true to make my debut in front of all those fans and I’m grateful to the manager for the opportunity,” said Olomola.

“When you’re on the bench they tell you to be ready at any moment as anything can happen, so I was ready.

“I tried to show the manager what I can and I gave it my all. The manager told me to save my energy and not try to win every ball!

“I think there’s a lot more pressure and a lot more tempo to the game at this level so that’s something I need to get used to quickly.”

Southampton 1-0 Sunderland: Boufal stunner send Saints into quarter-finals

Show/hide article…

Sofiane Boufal marked his St Mary’s debut with a stunning strike to fire Southampton into the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

The club’s record signing, whose introduction to English football has been delayed by injury, curled in sensational effort to sink Sunderland 1-0.

It was just a shame that so few were there to see it, with Saints’ ground half empty and an entire stand shut for the fourth-round tie.

The stay-aways looked to have made the right decision, however, as an hour desperately short on quality ticked painfully by.

But in the 66th minute Boufal, the £16m summer signing from Lille, scored a fabulous winner to pile on the misery for Sunderland.

To add to their problems the Black Cats, whose only two wins all season have come in this competition, had manager David Moyes sent to the stands after they were denied a late penalty.

Boufal was one of nine changes to the Southampton line-up, with boss Claude Puel mindful of their Premier League and Europa League campaigns.

Moyes made just four changes, including a first start for striker Victor Anichebe whose most notable contribution otherwise this term was his Twitter gaffe earlier in the week.

Sunderland managed the first shot on target midway through the first half with their first meaningful attack, Wahbi Khazri forcing a near-post save from Alex McCarthy with an angled drive.

Luckless Saints striker Jay Rodriguez, who has been dogged by injuries for two years, was forced off after 25 minutes having failed to shake off the effects of a nasty clash of heads with Sunderland full-back Billy Jones.

Rather than turn to in-form striker Charlie Austin, Puel threw on Olufela Olomola for a debut, but probably regretted it when the teenager blazed a good chance over before the break.

With the prospect of extra time beginning to loom large Boufal finally broke the deadlock with the first bit of quality of the night.

The 23-year-old controlled an up-and-under from James Ward-Prowse superbly, stepped around Jones, looked up and curled an unstoppable shot over the diving Jordan Pickford and inside the far post.

Moyes predictably sent on Jermain Defoe in a bid to salvage the tie and the four-goal striker scampered through on goal with 10 minutes left but fired his shot too close to McCarthy.

Moyes’ frustration boiled over in stoppage time when no penalty was given after Anichebe went down under Maya Yoshida’s challenge, and watched the dying moments from the stands as the Black Cats crashed out.

Moyes admits he deserved red card at Southampton

Show/hide article…

David Moyes admitted he deserved to be sent to the stands after Sunderland tumbled out of the EFL Cup at Southampton.

The Black Cats boss was furious after his struggling side were denied a late penalty when Maya Yoshida brought down Victor Anichebe in the area.

But the Scot’s industrial language towards fourth official James Adcock earned him his marching orders as Sunderland crashed out to Sofiane Boufal’s strike.

“I was sent off for leaving my box and swearing at the fourth official,” Moyes said.

“The problem was he chased me down the touchline. I swore at him and I shouldn’t have done so I deserved to be sent off.”

Moyes was in no doubt about the late penalty claim which angered him so much but was waved away by ref Chris Kavanagh.

“When you see it again it’s a stonewaller, no question,” he added. “Inside the box Yoshida fouls Victor, he comes across him, and it should have been a definite penalty awarded.”

Boufal reflects on a special night

Show/hide article…

Boufal struck his first goal for the club when his arching finish into the top corner left Jordan Pickford with no chance.

That goal set up an away trip to Arsenal in the next stage of the competition, and the Moroccan was happy with his night’s work.

He said: “It’s a beautiful goal and I’m so happy to score my first goal at St Mary’s. I want to say thank you for the support of all the fans who came today.

“I’m so happy to play 90 minutes as it’s good for the confidence and for my body.

“It’s a great night for me!”

Despite his stunning match winner, Boufal was also quick to praise those who have helped him back after a frustrating five months on the sidelines.

Boufal added: “The spirit is very strong. My teammates are so happy for me because they see me come into the club when I couldn’t play.

“Now they see me score this goal and they’re happy for me so I’d like to say thank you to them and to all the medical staff.

“The goal isn’t just for me it’s for everyone.”

Southampton boss Claude Puel praises ‘fantastic’ Sofiane Boufal after Sunderland winner

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel hailed Sofiane Boufal after his brilliant goal knocked Sunderland out of the EFL Cup and set up a quarter-final with Arsenal.

The club’s record signing lit up an otherwise tame clash at St Mary’s with a superb, curling shot over Jordan Pickford in the 66th minute to earn a 1-0 victory for the home side on his debut.

The start of Boufal’s Southampton career had been delayed by injury, but Puel said the fans will now be aware of his talent after he played the full 90 minutes.

“You can see his qualities,” he said. “You can see he is a fantastic player. It was difficult for us against a strong team. I enjoyed the result, of course, for all my players, the experienced and the young ones.”

Puel started five academy graduates in line-up that featured nine changes from Sunday’s draw with Manchester City.

And their reward is a quarter-final trip to the Emirates and fellow Frenchman Arsene Wenger on November 29 or 30.

“I would prefer of course to be at home,” he admitted. “But Arsene might play his young players again so it will be a good experience to see what we can do.”

Southampton 1-0 Sunderland: Puel gives young players “big experience”

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel admitted the Sunderland EFL Cup tie was a “big experience” for some of his young players.

Puel handed rare starts to Harrison Reed, Jack Stephens and Lloyd Isgrove, while Sam McQueen kept his place and Olufela Olomola was introduced early from the bench.

It was a real battle for Saints to get the 1-0 win over the Black Cats, settled by a stunning goal from Sofiane Boufal.

Puel said: “It is always interesting to see the many young players in this situation and the progress and what they can work for the future.

“It’s a big experience for them and with the final result I am happy to see these possibilities and to see also the good spirit and the good attitude of the young players, but also experienced players like Jose Fonte and Maya Yoshida very strong and very important for all these young players.

“It was good spirit and also the bench very well and all the players feel for the result and to see the possibilities and to win.”

In amongst a busy run of fixtures, the result was ultimately all that mattered for Puel, as Saints continue to stay alive in all competitions this season.

“I enjoy of course this result, I enjoy for all my players,” admitted the Saints manager.

“The players like Jose and Yoshida and young players which is a very hard game.

“We decided to change many players and with player without Sofiane Boufal or his goal it was difficult to keep good energy, good physical level all the game and with the injury at the beginning of the game to Jay Rodriguez we lost the possibility for another player on the bench.

“This was difficult for us against a strong team without young players but with experience and mature players.

“For my squad it is the best thing to have this result and we can continue this work and continue in all competitions.

“We can also stay different players for the next game and this is interesting and all is positive and not just perhaps the injury of Jay Rodriguez.

“It was interesting to see the young players and also the comeback of Sofiane Boufal. It’s good for my team and he can score a fantastic goal.”
