5 things we learned from Southampton 1-0 Sunderland

Show/hide article…

Record signing Soufiane Boufal’s magnificent goal on his home debut sent Southampton into the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup .

A dire cup tie did not deserve Boufal’s fabulous trap of a falling meteorite and unstoppable finish, whipped into the top corner beyond England Under-21 international keeper Jordan Pickford.

But the £21 million Moroccan’s moment of skill was enough to kill off suffering Sunderland , who slumped to their eighth defeat in 12 games this season.

Here are five things we learned from St. Mary’s…

What a way to spend your half-term holiday – a 650-mile round trip, from one end of the country to the other, to watch two weakened teams with 13 changes between them, in a cup competition nobody takes seriously until Wembley.

Full marks to around 1,700 Sunderland fans who made the trip to St Mary’s: With a thankless return journey through patches of thick fog ahead of them, some will just about make it back to Wearside in time for the second half of term.

In years to come, Alex McCarthy will be half the answer to a good pub quiz question: Who was the last club to have TWO goalkeepers in the same England squad?

Answer – Southampton. As well as Fraser Forster, now a regular back-up keeper in the Three Lions cast, his team-mate McCarthy was drafted in as cover for the injured Tom Heaton in Slovenia earlier this month.

With respect, English football’s reserve of goalkeeping talent has come to a pretty pass when a bloke who only gets a game for Saints in the EFL Cup makes it into the senior squad.

In only his second appearance of the season, McCarthy had little to do until a smart save at his near post to thwart Black Cats sub Jermain Defoe after 75 minutes.

Do footballers get their agents to post tweets on their behalf? Sunderland striker Victor Anichebe let the cat out of the bag at the weekend, opening a social media broadcast with the words, “Can you tweet something like: Unbelievable support yesterday and great effort by the lads…”

Anichebe, who led the Black Cats line with honest toil here, is actually one of the game’s more articulate players.

It is a measure of England one-cap wonder Jay Rodriguez’s wretched luck with injuries that he has made only 84 Premier League appearances – including cameos as substitute - in 52 months since his move from Burnley.

If anyone deserves respite from ill-fortune and an extended, trouble-free run in the first team, it is J-Rod… but he was forced off after just 25 minutes this time.

Record £21 million signing Sofiane Boufal arrived at Southampton from Lille in August with a big reputation and an even bigger wage packet.

After being forced to wait two months for his debut by injury, he decorated his home debut with a magnificent goal totally out of keeping with the 65 minutes of dross that preceded it.

Southampton 1-0 Sunderland: Brilliant Sofiane Boufal goal puts Saints through

Show/hide article…

Sofiane Boufal’s brilliant second-half goal proved the difference for Southampton as they beat Sunderland 1-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

The club’s record signing produced a sensational touch and shot in the 66th minute of his debut to beat Jordan Pickford and settle a largely disappointing match at St Mary’s.

It means Southampton have reached the quarter-finals of this competition for the third consecutive season and sets up a last-eight clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile, the cup exit piles on the misery for Sunderland boss David Moyes who was sent to the stands in the 90th minute for complaining with the officials over a late penalty appeal.

Moyes opted to make just four changes from the side that lost to West Ham on Saturday with Jermain Defoe dropping to the bench and Victor Anichebe making his first start for the club up front.

Southampton made nine changes from the side that drew with Manchester City on Sunday with only Jose Fonte and Sam McQueen - one of five Academy graduates in the starting XI - retaining their places.

And they were forced to make a further change midway through the first half when lone striker Jay Rodriguez was forced off, with an eye problem, to be replaced by the lively Olufela Olomola.

After so many changes, the first half was a disjointed and uninspiring affair with Southampton dominating the ball in the early exchanges before Sunderland felt their way into the match.

Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had an early shot blocked and Wahbi Khazri wasted some shooting opportunities for Sunderland, but there were no chances of note in the opening 45 minutes.

Indeed, the first real opportunity came on 66 minutes when Boufal’s brilliant goal saw the game explode into life.

The Moroccan received a high, hopeful ball from Fonte on the left of the area and took it down, taking his marker out of the picture, before curling a firm, precise shot into the top corner.

It was a rare moment of brilliance in the match, but it was almost cancelled out two minutes later by Paddy McNair, who headed a corner down and off the post - although Lloyd Isgrove would likely have cleared it off the line had it been on target.

Moyes sent Defoe on for the final 20 minutes and he might have levelled when he broke the offside trap and unleashed a low shot which Alex McCarthy dived and chested out for a corner.

Goalkeeper McCarthy looked to pick up a knock in the closing stages and needed team-mates to take goal kicks for him in the final 15 minutes, but Sunderland could not take advantage.

However when Anichebe went down under a late challenge from Maya Yoshida it looked like the away side might be awarded a lifeline from the spot.

The referee did not give the penalty and Moyes’ bad night was compounded when he was sent to the stands for stepping onto the pitch to complain about the decision.

Southampton 1-0 Sunderland: Sofiane Boufal’s stunning strike seals win

Show/hide article…

David Moyes admitted he deserved to be sent to the stands as his Sunderland side exited the EFL Cup away to Southampton.

The floundering Scot was incensed that his team were not awarded a last-minute penalty when Victor Anichebe went down under pressure from Maya Yoshida and he tore down the touchline, leaving his technical area. Moyes, who is the only manager yet to win a game in the top five leagues of English football, took exception to fourth official James Adcock ‘chasing’ him down the touchline and swore at him.

‘I was sent off for leaving my box and swearing,’ he said. 'The decision to send me off was correct. It was the fourth official, who chased me down the touchline. I felt like saying, “Just stay back.” But I swore at him which I shouldn’t have done and I deserved to get sent off.’

Moyes had plenty of seats to choose from. The Kingsland stand, running one length of St Mary’s, was entirely shut. Safe to say the EFL Cup has not gripped the masses on the south coast. A shame. Soufiane Boufal’s stunning strike, in the 66th minute of his full debut, was alone worthy of filling a stadium.

The 23-year-old killed a high, hopeful Jose Fonte ball forward with one devastating touch and, in the left corner of the box, took another touch inside before curling the ball into the far top right corner, via the crossbar, to set up a quarter-final with Arsenal.

Boufal has had to wait for two months to get up to speed and fitness since becoming their club record £21million summer signing from Lille and was only able to make his first substitute appearances against Inter Milan last week and Manchester City at the weekend. The wait has been well worth it if similar is to come from the tricky Moroccan. In a game which largely matched the disinterest, Boufal was the only thing to stand out — aside from the emptiness.

‘I’m not surprised by the goal,’ his manager Claude Puel said. ‘He has technical ability for these situations. It’s important to stay patient, he still doesn’t have a good physical level at the moment. It was not our intention that he played 80 minutes, but with the situation of the game it was important he stayed on the pitch.’

The starting line-ups reflected that apathy in the stands. Puel made nine changes and only Fonte and Sam McQueen started from the side who drew against City on Sunday. Moyes changed only four, but the Sunderland manager is short of alternatives.

It meant there was more entertainment on social media than on the pitch in the first half. Midway through, Sunderland tweeted about the great run and skilful nutmeg from Nathan Redmond. Southampton corrected them, pointing out that Redmond was on the bench. Guffaws all round. It was actually Boufal and the audacious skill was one of the only pieces of entertainment from that 45 minutes plus stoppages.

No mistaking him in the second half when he dazzled on the left once more, turning backward and forward, but could only force a corner. What Boufal did next — or was it Redmond? No, no, it was definitely Boufal — soon after that was in contrast to the entire match.

Sunderland almost levelled instantly, but Paddy McNair’s back post header from a corner struck the post. If Opta recorded the statistics for it there would probably have been more groans than chances created. It all became a bit creepy, and halloween is still four days away.

Moyes — resplendent in blue Sunderland tracksuit but cutting a helpless figure as they continued their dire form which has left them bottom of the Premier League and out of the League Cup — screamed from the touchline, willing his players not to be outplayed by a Southampton side almost half full with youngsters. It was to no avail.

Jay Rodriguez left the field on 26 minutes after clashing heads with Sunderland defender Billy Jones — he was being assessed for dizziness after the game — and Puel was so content with what he saw he brought on another one, 19-year-old forward Olufela Olomola.

Anichebe made his first start but did barely anything apart from not winning a penalty. He was probably preoccupied with what he was going to ask the person who runs his Twitter account to post when the game finished, after his debacle last weekend. Write something like: Great to get my first start, shame about the result.
