Southampton v Sunderland preview: David Moyes to rest senior players

Show/hide article…

David Moyes is set to rest a number of his senior players for Sunderland’s EFL Cup fourth-round trip to Southampton on Wednesday night.

The likes of top scorer Jermain Defoe, Steven Pienaar and captain John O’Shea will travel to the South Coast, but are unlikely to feature as Moyes looks to other members of his struggling squad to step up.

Defeat on Sunday to West Ham means the Black Cats are rooted to the foot of the Premier League, while Southampton drew with Manchester City after taking the lead at the Etihad.

Former Everton striker Victor Anichebe is set to lead the line for the visitors, while £16m record signing Sofiane Boufal will not start for Southampton.

Sunderland are yet to win in the league but have already been victorious twice in the EFL Cup, beating Shrewsbury Town and Queens Park Rangers in the earlier rounds.

Southampton boss Claude Puel is likely to make changes after seeing his side hampered with injury.

The Frenchman is without Shane Long, Ryan Bertrand, Matt Targett and Cedric Soares, who all sat out Sunday’s 1-1 draw.

Record signing Sofiane Boufal has made two brief substitute appearances as he continues to work his way back from a knee problem but is likely to have to wait for a full debut.

Moyes has hinted that some of his younger players will get a chance to start as he looks to rest senior squad members ahead of the weekend’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

Goalkeeper Mika could start between the sticks for current first choice Jordan Pickford. Patrick van Aanholt is nursing an adductor problem and Jack Rodwell has a calf strain, but neither has yet been ruled out.

Saints have reached the quarter-final of the League Cup in each of the last two seasons. They last did this in three consecutive campaigns between 1988-89 and 1990-91.

Sunderland beat Southampton 2-1 at this stage of the competition en route to the final in 2013-14 - the only previous meeting between them in the League Cup.

Southampton’s last four games in this competition have seen 18 goals (F11 A7), an average of 4.5 per game.

The Black Cats have both scored and conceded in their last eight League Cup games against fellow Premier League sides, winning three and losing five.

Charlie Austin has scored in five of his last six appearances in the League Cup, spread over spells with Burnley, QPR and Southampton.

I’ve been complimentary of Puel because he’s seen that his centre-backs are good enough not to play in a back three and allowed other players to push on.

Charlie Austin has made the forward position his own with Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond free to go forward as Oriol Romeu and Steven Davis have the quality and economy to protect the back four.

They were really unfortunate to lose at Arsenal at the start of last month and I think the penny dropped that they are good enough to be a successful side.

This is a tough one for Sunderland, with Arsenal to come at the weekend, and I can’t see anything but a comfortable home win.

Charlie predicts: 3-0 and Tadic to score first (28/1 with Sky Bet)

Moyes’ boys gear up for Saints clash as O’Shea eyes EFL Cup run

Show/hide article…

Sunderland may be dreading their next Premier League match against Arsenal but the Black Cats have the small obstacle of an EFL Cup fourth round tie against Southampton before they can think about that.

There is every reason why Tuesday’s training session at the Academy of Light would have been filled with positivity as David Moyes’ boys prepared for a break from their league gloom.

After all, Sunderland have been at their best in the EFL Cup this season with a 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury and a 2-1 win over QPR representing their only victories of the entire campaign.

Moyes is likely to field a strong team for the game at St Mary’s with John O’Shea, Jermain Defoe and Wahib Kahzri all involved in Tuesday’s session.

However, the former Everton and Manchester United boss could also see it as an opportunity to rest his most important players ahead of the weekend visit of Arsenal.

But for O’Shea, who could return to the starting line-up after being benched for the 3-2 reverse against West Ham, Wednesday’s game should be given the utmost priority, if only to spark a return to form in the league.

‘Without a doubt [it gives us a chance to build confidence ahead of Arsenal],’ the captain told Sunderland’s official website. 'We want to win games as quickly as possible for everybody associated with the club – ourselves, the fans, and the management and coaches.

‘We especially want that win in the league, but if we can get a win in the cup and get through to the next round we’ll take it.’

He added: “There’s some interesting ties in the round, including ours which is a tough one against Southampton, but hopefully we can get something from it.”

Boufal hoping for first start

Show/hide article…

Saints will make a late decision on whether to hand Sofiane Boufal his first start for the club ahead of tonight’s game against Sunderland.

The £16m club record signing has appeared as a second half sub in the last two matches as Claude Puel takes a cautious approach to his return to action.

Boufal has not started a game since April due to a knee injury, but is battling back to full fitness.

Tonight’s League Cup last 16 tie at St Mary’s would appear to be the ideal chance to get him involved for longer.

However, Puel revealed that even playing 20 minutes at Manchester City was difficult for Boufal due to the knee problem he has suffered with, and so he will assess the risks before making a decision.

“We will see his recovery to see the possibility for this game and if he can start,” insisted Puel.

“I don’t know, we have to see his recovery and his knee.

“It was difficult just 20 minutes for him (at Manchester City) but it’s important to stay present with him and to see him come back step by step.

“He will be an important player for the squad and it’s important to keep him with a good physical, and without injury is even more important.”

Puel is expected to give a few of his young players a game this evening, but will still ensure he has plenty of senior stars in the side.

Having been in and around the squad in recent weeks, Jack Stephens could well get a game, while Puel hopes Matt Targett or Ryan Bertrand will be available to give Sam McQueen a break, with the 21-year-old having featured in three games in the space of a week.

Cuco Martina has had the same demands placed upon him, and is also set to be given a breather.

Oriol Romeu, another who has been heavily leaned on, could be replaced by Harrison Reed, while Olufela Olomola is expected to be in the shake-up.

Jay Rodriguez is likely to get the chance to continue his return to full fitness.

Puel issues Sunderland warning

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has warned his squad not to underestimate Sunderland as Saints go for a League Cup quarter-final place at St Mary’s tonight.

The Black Cats are marooned at the foot of the Premier League table, having collected just two points so far this season.

One of those came against Saints in a disappointing 1-1 draw at St Mary’s earlier in the campaign.

Puel is wary of the way Sunderland battled on that day, and believes that without the pressure of top flight football they could be a threat.

He said: “I will want to take this game with quality and with all possibilities to win this game and to continue in this competition.

“I think it’s important at the moment we play four competitions and to continue this work and to win this game.

“Of course it’s important to consider the possibilities of my players.

“We have many injuries and it’s difficult to turn and to start with a different team.

“Young players cam play also and we will see this as we prepare this game, but it is a difficult game because Sunderland of course think for their championship but it will be free in their mind to prepare this game without pressure.

“It’s important for us to continue this work and play at home and have a good result in the final.

“We will see the possibilities with young players and we can play some players but not for all the team.”

Puel will continue to take the game seriously despite the knowledge that Sunderland boss David Moyes is likely to rest senior players.

Defender John O’Shea, midfielder Steven Pienaar and striker Jermain Defoe are unlikely to start as Moyes attempts to protect some of his key men although Defoe for one will travel with the manager’s attacking options limited.

Full-back Patrick van Aanholt is nursing an adductor problem while midfielder Jack Rodwell has a calf strain, but neither has yet been ruled out.

For Saints the game represents a great chance to make the last eight.

The game must be settled this evening, going to extra-time and penalties if needed.

The draw for the quarter-finals takes place after the game.

McQueen thought his Saints dream was fading

Show/hide article…

IT wasn’t so long ago that academy graduate Sam McQueen had begun to give up on his Saints dream.

The 21-year-old reflects that when he moved on loan to League One Southend United last season he thought that his “opportunities in football maybe elsewhere” and not at St Mary’s.

But, thanks in part to the faith he holds in his own ability and to Claude Puel’s sharp eye for potential, which saw him converted from wide midfielder to full-back, McQueen has made his once fading dream a reality.

The Southampton-born youngster, who has taken his chance at left-back with Matt Targett and Ryan Bertrand injured, is now hoping to make his third start in a row against Sunderland in the EFL Cup fourth round tonight.

It comes after an incredible week in which he made his first start against Inter Milan at the San Siro and his second at Premier League leaders Manchester City.

“It did go through my mind partly,” he said, when asked if he thought that it would never happen for him at Saints. “You go out on loan because you want to learn so you can come back here and play, but I was thinking maybe my opportunities in football maybe elsewhere in the future.

“But as soon as I came back here in pre-season it was that I wanted to hit the ground running and give my absolute best shot to try and get in the team here.

“It wasn’t definite in my head, but I just needed to prepare for every opportunity and any way that it could go.”

It was against tonight’s opponents, Sunderland, that McQueen made his Saints debut in February 2014, as an 82nd-minute substitute in an FA Cup match at the Stadium of Light.

But that brief outing was not a catalyst for more games and the former Mountbatten School pupil headed to Roots Hall last January in search of first team football.

“A lot of people say that going out on loan is almost a negative thing, the way it shows that you’re not needed at the club,” he explains. “I may not have gone there and learnt how to play on huge occasions, but I learnt a lot about first team football.

“I learnt about the things I should and shouldn’t be doing in first team football.

“Even though there weren’t huge stadiums or huge occasions, it was still in front of a good few thousand fans.

“I have thought about it and I think it was very beneficial for when I came on against Burnley and in other games.

“It’s a taste of it. Even if it’s not the real deal, it’s a taste of it and does prepare you a lot.

“I was very grateful to Southend for the opportunity I got and I did learn.”

There were plans for another loan move to Southend this summer, but McQueen caught Puel’s eye while on a pre-season trip to America.

He then played in warm-up matches as a full back, a position he continued in for the club’s under-23s before Puel came calling for services with Targett and Bertrand crocked.

McQueen, who is a Saints fan, came on for Targett against Burnley before playing against Inter and City.

“It’s what you dream of,” he said. “It’s what you’d ask for.

“If you wanted to have your first few games for your club, then you’d want big games at big places, which I’ve had the opportunity to do.

“I’m just happy and grateful for that and also very grateful that it’s gone well so far.”

“I’ve haven’t reflected too much,” he added. “I’ve sorted of just got to get ready for the next game because Berty and Matty are still out injured, so I need to make sure I’m ready if I’m needed.

“I haven’t thought too much about what’s happened. I’m more worried about what’s going to happen. I’ve just been getting ready for the next game and getting mentally prepared.”

McQueen now sees the Black Cats match tonight as the perfect opportunity for more of the club’s academy players to make their breakthrough.

“Everyone’s ready for it,” he said. “It’s been said around the club quite a lot how good the strength in depth has been.

“When people come in and get their chance everyone’s taken it and it gives the manager problems for his team selection, which is a good thing.

“Hopefully there will be opportunities for people to get in and around the team again on Wednesday and, if they do, I know Harrison Reed and Jack Stephens will be absolutely ready for it and take their chance.”

Puel: Sunderland tough to prepare for

Show/hide article…

Both Puel and his Black Cats counterpart, David Moyes, have indicated that they will rotate their teams for the fourth-round match, with a number of young players set to be given a chance.

“It’s a difficult game to prepare, because you don’t know the Sunderland team, because they change also their team to prepare for their game on Saturday against Arsenal,” said Puel.

“But it’s the same for the two teams. We play at home, with all our supporters, and it’s important to make a good result, with good play and a good feeling.”

Puel added: “It’s important to stay with a good concentration and focus on this game, which is a difficult game, because you don’t know the team of Sunderland at the start, and every time young players can play – it’s the same for us.

“They want to play a good game, it’s the beginning of their career and it’s very important, so they have a good spirit and a good attitude, and for us it will be the same.”

Bundesliga ace reveals he snubbed Liverpool and Arsenal in the summer… and this is why

Show/hide article…

Keita, 21, emerged as hot property after two successful years with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. He eventually elected to join newly-promoted Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for around £13m in July.

And the Guinean midfielder has revealed he snubbed the advances of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Southampton to make the move to the Red Bull Arena. Keita felt he was not ready to join a top club at this early stage in his career.

“Arsenal, Manchester City and Southampton were all interested in signing me and Liverpool as well” He told SportNet: "Arsenal, Manchester City and Southampton were all interested in signing me and Liverpool as well, although I did not speak with their coach. “I did not want to join a big Champions League club right away. It is too early for that. I want to prove myself in the Bundesliga first now.”

Keita has made an impressive start to the season with Leipzig, bagging three goals in his six top-flight appearances.

He is tied to the German outfit until the summer of 2020.
