Nathan Redmond insists he’s still adapting to his new role

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Nathan Redmond risked being benched by manager Claude Puel if he had not transitioned from a winger to a striker and the 22-year-old feels he was yet to fully rebuild his game.

Redmond, who joined the Saints during the close season, was told by the manager his playing system would not have place for wide players.

He has since scored three goals in nine Premier League starts to help his side to eighth in the table.

‘I’m learning a new position. I’m playing up front,’ Redmond said.

'Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will I transferring into becoming a striker. I’m learning daily in training and learning during the games as well.

'He (Puel) made it clear he wasn’t going to play with wide players, but he also made it clear that he’d watched me before and seen me play, so he knew I had the potential to play there (up front).

‘It was about trying it in pre-season and once it came to the first couple of games of the season he told me I was going to be playing there. It was either adapt and learn or sit on the sidelines, and I’m never going to shy away from a challenge.’

Southampton host Sunderland in the fourth round of the League Cup on Wednesday night before they play fourth-placed Chelsea at home on Sunday.

McCarthy: Confidence is sky high

Show/hide article…

McCarthy kept a clean sheet in the last round as Saints progressed with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at St Mary’s.

He will be hoping to be involved again as Claude Puel’s men look to secure a place in the last eight for the third consecutive season.

“We’ve had difficult games and we’ve got results from those games. Confidence in the dressing room is sky high at the moment and that’s why we want to do well in all competitions,” McCarthy said.

“We’ve got a great squad here and great management so we’re looking forward to it.

“We want a good cup run and do well in all competitions. With the game tomorrow night, we’ve got a good chance of getting through and pushing through the rounds.”

Sunderland have experienced their worst start to a Premier League season, but their two victories this season have come in the EFL Cup.

And the former Palace goalkeeper is expecting a difficult test against a side looking to kick-start a run of form.

McCarthy added: “They’ve had a tricky start but they’ll be looking for a result to kick start their season so we know it’s not going to be an easy game.

“If we take all the positives we’ve had from the previous games and put them in tomorrow night’s game, we’ll have a great chance of getting through.”

McCarthy: Rotation policy drives us on

Show/hide article…

McCarthy has been patiently waiting in the wings behind Fraser Forster, making his solitary appearance in the EFL Cup against his former employers Crystal Palace.

With Saints still competing on all fronts though, suffering just one defeat in the last nine games, McCarthy feels the jostling for positions has only served to enhance the competitive edge to the group.

He said: “With the amount of games, the manager is going to have to rotate the squad. For the games he has done that, the lads that have come in have done well.

“It’s nice to know that everyone is fighting for their position here and everyone in the squad is capable of playing.

“It’s a good thing for the manager to have and I think that’s why our results have been so good lately.

“I’ve been really impressed. With the facilities and the togetherness it’s a great club to be involved with.”

Opposition View: Sunderland

Show/hide article…

The Black Cats are still awaiting a first Premier League win of the season, after Winston Reid’s last-gasp strike condemned them to a 1-0 defeat at West Ham.

They have though defeated Shrewsbury Town and Queens Park Rangers to reach the fourth round, and Moyes is welcoming a change of competition to help to try and turn their fortunes around.

He said: “We’ve not won the two games we’ve been away from home recently but we’ve shown signs of getting better.

“We have to keep that up to keep the positivity up because we don’t want to keep getting beat that’s for sure.

“We’ll try and use it as a change from the league. We’ve had a couple of wins in the League Cup and got through so we want to try and do that again.

“I think our performances have been improving slightly. I think we’ve been getting closer to winning.

“The players feel that and in the building the staff as well, everybody feels that way so we’ll keep plugging at it and hoping somewhere along the road it will change.”

Saints go into the fixture buoyed by a well-earned draw against Manchester City on Sunday.

Goals from Charlie Austin and Jake Hesketh saw off Crystal Palace at St Mary’s in the last round of this competition.

And Moyes admits he has been hugely impressed by what Southampton have done so far this season.

“I’ve been impressed by Southampton and I think a lot of people have,” said Moyes.

“I think outside the top sort of three or four teams, I think Southampton are the name people are talking about just now and rightly so because they’ve played some really good stuff.”

Nice raise over €100,000 in commemorative shirt auction

Show/hide article…

Paris Saint-Germain’s Hatem Ben Arfa and Southampton’s Jeremy Pied bought two commemorative shirts each as Nice collected over €100,000 in an auction for victims of July’s terrorist attack.

Nice started the season with the special shirts, on which the names of all 86 people who died on the city’s Promenade des Anglais on July 14 were printed in the form of a heart.

Rennes, who Nice played on the opening day of the season, wore similar shirts, and they were paired up with their opponents’ strip in the auction, staged for the benefit of the Promenade des Anges association.

Ben Arfa, 29, who played at Nice last season before joining PSG this summer, paid €3,100 for the shirts of Nice goalkeeper Yoan Cardinale and Rennes’ Adama Diakhaby.

Pied, 27, who moved to Southampton from the Cote d’Azur club in the summer to be reunited with his former coach at Nice, Claude Puel, purchased the shirts of Ivory Coast international Jean Michael Seri and Rennes’ Wesley Said for €4,000.

Fellow Ligue 1 club Montpellier bought one lot for €3,300 while Mario Balotelli’s shirt brought the biggest bid with former Nice president Andre Bois spending €11,100 for the Italy international’s jersey.

Every Premier League side’s best ever win in the competition revealed – relive your club’s sweetest victory

Show/hide article…

There is no sweeter taste than victory in the Premier League.

Some experience it regularly, others don’t get the three points very often at all, but when they do, it’s an incredible feeling.

We all have our favourite triumphs too, and they aren’t necessarily the biggest wins. Sometimes a 1-0 win against your rival is just as good as beating a bottom of the table side side 5-0. Meanwhile, context can turn an ordinary victory into a history making one.

But what are each of the current 20 teams’ best ever Premier League wins? talkSPORT takes a look.

Manchester United vs Manchester City: the tactical battles which will decide the derby

Show/hide article…

The problem in recent games for City is they have been missing their right-backs, which has made it difficult for Pep Guardiola to play with four at the back. I thought they were magnificent in the 1-1 draw against Everton with a three-man defence but the difference between that game and the Southampton one for me was the position of John Stones. Against Everton, Stones played in the middle of the three with Nicolas Otamendi right and Gael Clichy left. But against Southampton, Stones was on the right with Vincent Kompany in the middle and you don’t get the best from Stones that way because he is much more comfortable and far better at bringing the ball out than Kompany.
