The best goalkeepers in the Premier League ranked from 20-1

Show/hide article…

This may come as a shock, but Eric Dier believes his Tottenham team-mate, Hugo Lloris is the best goalie in the Premier League.

The midfielder thinks Lloris is just carrying on from where he left off last season.

“I don’t think there is anyone as good as him, to be honest, but that is my opinion and football is a game of opinions.”

He’s right, it is all about opinions and this is the talkSPORT.com view.

We’ve looked at the first choice goalkeepers at each club, as of 25 October 2016, so anyone out injured has not been considered, for example, Jack Butland.

Scroll through the gallery to see the list of goalkeepers, beginning with Hull’s David Marshall.

Match Preview: Saints vs Sunderland

Show/hide article…

What’s at stake?

With huge fixtures in the Europa League and Premier League over the last week, the EFL Cup might not exactly have been at the forefront of people’s minds in Southampton.

Yet this is a big game for the club, with a place in the quarter-finals of the competition at stake, and, if Saints progress, it will be the third year in a row they have reached the last eight.

Sunderland will probably feel more in need of a win, though. Their only victories in any competition this season have come in the EFL Cup, at home to Shrewsbury and away to QPR, and they are now winless in their last four since the trip to Loftus Road.

Team news

Saints are still without Ryan Bertrand, Cédric, Matt Targett and long-term absentee Jérémy Pied for the game. Jake Hesketh, who scored in the 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace in the previous round, is also out injured.

Sunderland are hopeful that Patrick van Aanholt and Jack Rodwell will be available, following slight knocks. Striker Joel Asoro, 17, could well feature, while Victor Anichebe is also in line to play. David Moyes has confirmed that Jermain Defoe will still travel, though, as will fellow senior players Steven Pienaar and John O’Shea. Vito Mannone and Seb Larsson remain out.

Form guide

Southampton’s last five:

Manchester City (a) D 1-1

Internazionale (a) L 0-1 (Europa League)

Burnley (h) W 3-1

Leicester (a) D 0-0

Hapoel Be’er Sheva (a) D 0-0 (Europa League)

Sunderland’s last five:

West Ham (a) L 0-1

Stoke (a) L 0-2

West Brom (h) D 1-1

Crystal Palace (h) L 2-3

QPR (a) W 2-1 (EFL Cup)

Top performers

Nathan Redmond is a man in form for Saints, with two goals in his last two games, taking his total for the season to three. Charlie Austin remains well out in front as top scorer, with seven to his name.

Top scorer: Charlie Austin (7)

Most assists: Six players (1)

For Sunderland, there is no doubting the main source of goals, and that is from Jermain Defoe, who netted in the 1-1 Premier League draw at St Mary’s earlier this season. Patrick van Aanholt, who has two, has also been a bright spot in a difficult campaign for the Black Cats.

Top scorer: Jermain Defoe (4)

Most assists: Three players (1)

Previous meetings

All-time record:

Played: 66

Southampton: 25

Draws: 17

Sunderland: 24

Last four meetings:

August 2016: Southampton 1-1 Sunderland (Rodriguez)

March 2016: Southampton 1-1 Sunderland (van Dijk)

November 2015: Sunderland 0-1 Southampton (Tadić pen)

May 2015: Sunderland 2-1 Southampton (Mané)

Did you know?

The last time Saints reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup in three consecutive seasons was from 1988/89 to 1990/91.

Charlie Austin has scored in five of his last six appearances in the League Cup.

Southampton v Sunderland

Show/hide article…

Sunderland manager David Moyes believes progressing in the EFL Cup can help the Premier League’s bottom club find form.

The Black Cats, who visit Southampton in the fourth round, have taken just two league points from the 27 available since Moyes took charge.

“I want to get through in the cup, I really do, but if possible I’d like to probably leave out John O’Shea, Jermain Defoe and Steven Pienaar,” said Moyes.

Saints boss Claude Puel says record signing Sofiane Boufal will not start.

The midfielder, signed for £16m from Lille in the summer, is recovering from a knee injury and is likely to make his third substitute appearance of the season.

Puel’s side have lost just once - to Inter Milan in the Europa League - in nine matches but will again be without the injured Shane Long, Ryan Bertrand, Matt Targett and Cedric Soares.

Sunderland reached the final of the League Cup in 2014 then managed four wins in their final six matches of the season to retain their Premier League status.

Asked whether he thinks a similar run in the competition will kickstart the Black Cats’ league form, Moyes replied: "Yes, I think it can.

“But our league position means that I do have to be careful with some of the players, and especially while we haven’t got a lot to select from.”

Despite completing Saturday’s defeat by West Ham, full-back Patrick van Aanholt and midfielder Jack Rodwell are expected to be absent with minor injuries.

Sunderland host Chelsea in Saturday’s early kick-off while Southampton have an extra 24 hours to recover as they entertain Arsenal on Sunday.

Sunderland clash vital, says Puel

Show/hide article…

The Europa League and Premier League may have been Southampton’s primary points of focus over the last week or so, but Claude Puel insists tomorrow’s EFL Cup game against Sunderland retains significant importance.

Saints host the Premier League’s bottom-placed club, knowing that a win will send them into the quarter-finals of the competition for a third consecutive year, bringing a potential trip to Wembley Stadium another step closer.

Puel said: "I think it’s a very important game. It’s important to continue in this competition for the squad, for the young players – to continue the work with them and to see good progression for every player. It’s a possibility also to win something.

"We will see this for the future. Now it’s more important to win tomorrow and to continue in all the competitions.

“I think it’s important to continue our good work and we will see for the future what the possibilities to continue in this competition and all the competitions are, and perhaps even a title at the end, but this is a long way away right now.”
