Redmond: Plenty of positives

Show/hide article…

Redmond’s second goal in as many games gave Claude Puel’s men a half-time lead, but Kelechi Iheanacho came off the bench to rescue a point for the hosts.

Despite the result coming at the end of a long week for Saints, Redmond admitted there was some disappointment at not taking home the win.

“We can take the positives. We’ve come away with a point, but with our mentality in the squad, we want all three points at the end of the day,” Redmond said.

“Even if we draw, we’re frustrated that we didn’t get all three points. But we’ll take the point and we’ll keep going.

“We’ve got some good form now in the league, so we’ll look to continue that moving forward.”

Redmond’s goal, his second in two games, gave Saints the lead, and came after a defensive error from Manchester City. That, the forward says, was something the visitors were aware of before the game.

“From watching their games in preparation for the match we knew they would give us chances, because they only play with three at the back,” he added.

“As soon as I saw the opportunity I anticipated it and then I had to keep a cool head, which I’ve been working on since I came to the club.”

Romeu proud of defensive display

Show/hide article…

Saints held firm to earn a point at Etihad Stadium, after Nathan Redmond’s first-half strike was cancelled out by Kelechi Iheanacho’s effort.

And Romeu reflected on a job well done, as Claude Puel’s men continued their unbeaten run in the Premier League.

He said: “I think we did well and we tried to stop them as much as we could. Defensively there was only one action where they scored but the whole game was good.

“In the second-half it was a bit harder but we have to be positive because we played a great game at a difficult stadium.

“It’s the same as any game where we are helping each other. It’s very important and the results have shown that.”

Iheanacho, Sane rescue stumbling Manchester City a point

Show/hide article…

It’s the same old story for Manchester City in the last few weeks. An individual mistake again gifted their opposition the lead and they found it hard to get through a well organised defence. Southampton frustrated the home fans by slowing the game down and Pep Guardiola’s side struggled to get to grips with a new system, making for an all-together disjointed performance.

City were able to put their poor first 45 minutes behind them and come out for the second half as comfortably the better team. After not managing a shot on target in the opening period, Guardiola’s men began to dominate the ball in the second half and work their way into far better positions than earlier in the match. Somehow, City remain top of the table.

Once again, the opposition had very little work to do in order to score. Having made errors along the way in gifting goals to Celtic, Tottenham, Everton and Barcelona, City did the same again for Southampton – as a blind pass from John Stones sent Nathan Redmond through behind Vincent Kompany. Another feature of recent matches has been a lack of a decent final ball, and that was again a problem for City on Sunday.

6 – Guardiola got it wrong to begin with and it was only after a reshuffle at the start of the second half that his side was able to get back into the game.

Player ratings (1-10, with 10 the best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Claudio Bravo, 6 – With little he could have done to prevent the opening goal, Bravo was again bizarrely jeered by the opposition fans despite producing a number of good balls into the midfield to begin City attacks. He made a good save from Charlie Austin late on, too.

DF John Stones, 5 – The centre-back seemed to struggle in City’s back-three system. He never looked comfortable without a full-back beside him and had a couple of hairy moments after he made a howler for the opening goal. He should have looked before playing the ball square inside his own half.

DF Vincent Kompany, 6 – Perhaps the captain shouldn’t have stepped so far forward with Stones in possession ahead of the opening goal, but he was hardly to blame for the error. It was a solid return to the starting line-up.

DF Aleksandar Kolarov, 7 – The Serbian played a number of excellent balls across the pitch for Leroy Sane to attack the Southampton defence and was solid, if not spectacular, in his own defensive third.

MF Fernandinho, 7 – The Brazilian grew into the game and, after a wobbly start, was able to get to grips with the midfield. He played Sane through with a great ball for the equaliser and settled in well at centre-back when ending the game there.

MF Ilkay Gundogan, 6 – The idea behind a lot of what the German was trying was good, but the execution didn’t live up to what was expected. He gave the ball away too much in the first half, but improved in the second and should have scored late on.

MF Leroy Sane, 7 – Perhaps the most likely to create anything all afternoon, the German was a key man in most of City’s attacks. He hugged the touchline well and troubled the Southampton defenders, eventually assisting Iheanacho’s equaliser.

MF Kevin De Bruyne, 5 – A kick on his ankle left him limping from the opening stages and he just wasn’t able to influence the match because of it. He got on the ball a lot in the first half, but his passes went astray and he was subbed off at the break.

MF David Silva, 6 – A quiet afternoon for the Spaniard improved in the second half, but he was still nowhere near his creative best. Perhaps what summed up his fortune for the day was his slip when in a good shooting position in the box in second half stoppage time.

MF Raheem Sterling, 7 – Just like with Sane, Sterling was one of City’s most dangerous players on Sunday. He worked far better when he switched to the right flank and a number of excellent deliveries into the box should have been capitalised upon by his teammates.

FW Sergio Aguero, 5 – The Argentine was anonymous in the first half, though he did pick up in the second with a number of good runs. However, nothing went right for him.

FW Kelechi Iheanacho, 7 – Replacing De Bruyne at half time, Iheanacho immediately changed the shape of the City attack and his finish was impressive to equalise.

MF Jesus Navas, NR – The Spaniard replaced Kompany on 78 minutes in an attempt to get more creativity into the side.

MF Nolito, NR – Brought on for Sane on 90 minutes, there was no time for Nolito to influence the game.

Angry Pep Guardiola keeps Manchester City players in dressing room for an hour

Show/hide article…

Pep Guardiola kept his Manchester City players locked in their dressing-room for nearly an hour after their winless run stretched to five games.

Guardiola did not emerge from the home dressing-room until 50 minutes after the final whistle, determined to deliver some home truths in his post-match inquest.

John Stones gifted Southampton the opener after 27 minutes, Nathan Redmond seizing on his poor back-pass to open the scoring for the visitors.

Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho earned a point for City with a 54th-minute equaliser, enough to keep them top of the Premier League on goal difference.

Manchester City 1-1 Southampton player ratings: Who was YOUR man of the match?

But Guardiola’s decision to keep his players confined to the dressing-room for so long showed how angry he was, even if he did try to play it down afterwards.

“The red wine was good and I took a little bit longer,” joked Guardiola.

“We were together, we spoke, but nothing special. We spoke about the situation.

“I was football player so I know this can happen. You’re able to win 10 times in a row and after you’re not able to win five times.

“You have to accept that, but I have to discover the reason why and I’m going to fight for that.”

Guardiola refused to blame Stones for City’s failure to win, just as he absolved keeper Claudio Bravo when he was sent off in last week’s 4-0 Champions League defeat at Barcelona.

“Today with John and on Wednesday with Claudio, that is not the reason,” said Guardiola.

“Against Everton we missed two penalties, we played amazing and didn’t win.

“It’s something more and about the team and how how you react.

“It’s part of the process of how we react and how people react to a new manager here, but football is complicated.

“We didn’t have 90 bad, bad minutes, but when we’re not perfect, we concede a lot.”

Saints scorer Redmond said: “We knew they’d give us chances because they only play with three at the back.

“We can take the positives. We’ve come away with a point, but with our mentality in the squad, we want all three points.

“Even if we draw, we’re frustrated that we didn’t get all three points. But we’ll take the point and keep going.”

City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne came off at half-time with a calf injury and is set to miss Wednesday’s EFL Cup tie at arch-rivals Manchester United.

Pep Guardiola’s honeymoon with Manchester City is over, the hard work starts now

Show/hide article…

Five games without a win was not in the brochure when Manchester City lured Pep Guardiola.

Nor was this kind of display, a scrappy, unedifying spectacle that did little to enhance Guardiola’s perceived standing as the world’s leading coach.

After flying out of the traps under Guardiola with 10 straight wins, City have since lost their way, their early aura of invincibility stripped away to reveal a team struggling for an identity.

They remain top of the Premier League, on goal difference, but Guardiola will not be fooled by that, acutely aware his side remain a work in progress, despite their lofty status.

Guardiola certainly did not wait to conduct the inquest with his players, keeping them locked inside their dressing-room at the Etihad Stadium for 45 minutes after the final whistle.

Manchester City 1-1 Southampton: Iheanacho spares Stones’ blushes as City are held - 5 things we learned

The City boss laughed off the prolonged post-match spell in the dressing-room, joking the red wine was too good to leave, but it is clear he felt he had to deliver some home truths there and then.

If it’s any consolation to Guardiola, the last time he went five games without a win, in his first season with Barcelona in 2008-09, he went on to win La Liga, Copa Del Rey and the Champions League.

But there is little chance of him bagging a similar Treble in his debut season here in England, given the superior level of competition, which Guardiola has discovered to his cost in recent weeks.

He responded to City’s midweek 4-0 Champions League defeat at his former club Barcelona by recalling skipper Vincent Kompany and star striker Sergio Aguero.

It was Kompany’s first start in month, while Aguero returned having begun City’s previous two games on the bench, unfamiliar territory for a player of his stature.

The return of both was expected to help jolt City from their winless run, one which had seen the early lavish praise for Guardiola’s impressive start replaced by questions over his approach.

Guardiola responded to those questioning his style by reminding his detractors he had won 21 trophies in seven seasons, proof that his methods yield sustained success.

That remarkable record at Barca and Bayern Munich suggests Guardiola will enjoy more of the same at City, but any success here is certainly going to be harder-earned than at his previous two clubs.

In their five-game winless streak, City have gone behind every time, usually by gifting their opponents the opener, as they did here through a calamitous error from John Stones.

Guardiola has compared Stones to his cultured, ball-playing former Barcelona team-mate Ronald Koeman, hailing him as a potential world-class defender.

But here, committing a howler that will play on his mind for some time, Stones looked more like Ronald McDonald than Ronald Koeman, gifting Southampton the opening goal.

Stones looked to be passing the ball to Kompany, but did not seem to realise his captain had stepped up, his ill-judged execution presenting the ball straight to Nathan Redmond.

Redmond was alert to the blunder and seized upon it, rounding Claudio Bravo before drilling the ball into the net to give Saints the lead after 27 minutes.

Stones looked to have atoned four minutes later, scoring at the far post from a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside against Aguero.

Manchester City 1-1 Southampton player ratings: Who was YOUR man of the match?

Thereafter City toiled in search of an equaliser, but there was an air of desperation about their play, until Fernandinho began the move that yielded the goal that earned them a point.

Fernandinho picked out Leroy Sane with a fine cross-field ball. He in turn found substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, on after the break for De Bruyne, who steered the ball in from close-range.

Saints keeper Fraser Forster saved twice late on, from Ilkay Gundogan and David Silva, while Aguero went on a rampaging forward run, only to shoot across the face of goal.

Forster was booked for time-wasting as Saints wound down the clock, with Guardiola’s side subjected to boos at the final whistle by those City fans who had stayed until the bitter end.

The honeymoon period is most definitely over for Guardiola, for whom the hard work now begins.

Eastleigh proudly fly the flag for pan-disability football

Show/hide article…

EASTLEIGH are working in partnership with Southampton FC’s Saints Foundation to provide greater opportunities for people with disabilities to play and enjoy football.

A total of 30 teams and over 120 players were involved at a special launch day at St Mary’s in early June.

It was the culmination of the Saints Foundation’s work with five local clubs - Eastleigh, Sholing, Fawley Falcons, Littleton and St Francis – to develop their own pan-disability teams.

“It’s about showcasing their ability, not their disability,” explained Saints Foundation ambassador Martin Sinclair.

Eastleigh’s hot young midfield prospect Luke Coulson is proud to be the ambassador for the Spitfires’ flourishing pan-disability programme.

“The community and the fans that support us are amazing and it is important that we, as a football club, do everything we can to support them in return,” he said.

“The programme is designed to encourage and support everyone who wants to play the wonderful game and I hope that more people will come along, participate and share in what we’re doing.”

First-team manager Ronnie Moore added: “The community of Eastleigh is an essential part of our football club.

“With this in mind we are launching the new Hampshire Pan-Disability League for under-12s, under-16s and adults.

“I think this is a wonderful idea – fun, laughter and enjoyment.”

One young play enjoying being part of the Eastleigh family is Luke Brownlow who has mild cerebral palsy affecting his left side.

His mum Alison explained: “We stumbled upon an advert for a pan-disability session at Eastleigh FC. I was very nervous about how Luke would find it as he had never been involved with the ‘disabled’ word.

“I needn’t have worried. From the minute Luke stepped onto the Astroturf, he belonged!

“At Eastleigh nobody cares what disability you have. Children are footballers and nothing else.

“They train hard, they develop their skills…but, most of all, they have fun!”

The new teams were recently introduced to a 2,209 Silverlake crowd prior to National League kick-off against Dagenham & Redbridge.

“The feedback we got from them was they felt like they were famous for the day especially when they did the lap of honour,” smiled EFC’s community officer Sharon King.

Sharon can be contacted at the club on 023 80 613361.

Super Sunday Podcast: Chelsea v Man Utd, Man City v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Graeme Souness and Thierry Henry were on Nissan Super Sunday to analyse Chelsea’s win over Manchester United and Manchester City’s draw with Southampton.

Pedro set the ball rolling after just 30 seconds before Gary Cahill doubled the advantage from a corner. Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante then scored in the second half to compound Mourinho’s misery.

The victory moved Chelsea into the top four in the Premier League and left United seventh.

Earlier in the day, Man City came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Southampton at the Etihad.

City, who handed starts to Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero, were behind in the 27th minute after John Stones’ poor back pass gifted Nathan Redmond the opener.

But they were back on level terms after the break when substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, on at half-time for Kevin De Bruyne, swept home Leroy Sane’s cross from close range.
