5 things we learned from Manchester City 1-1 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Manchester City’s winless run continued after being frustrated by Southampton at the Etihad.

City have now gone five games without success as their determination to play out of defence cost them again.

John Stones was the guilty party this time as his wayward pass was intercepted by Nathan Redmond, and the Southampton man made him pay.

Stones also had a goal disallowed on a day to forget for the England defender but City eventually levelled through substitute Kelechi Iheanacho.

The result does take City back to the top on goal difference but Guardiola will have more than a few concerns.

Here are five things we learned.

All week, Pep Guardiola has faced criticism for his refusal to change his ways.

City - and in particular Claudio Bravo - were caught out at the Nou Camp but Pep insisted he would always play out of the back.

Within half an hour at the Etihad, his methods had led to another City calamity and saw them drop more points.

This time it was John Stones who messed up as he tried to play the ball across defence to Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian didn’t read it, Nathan Redmond intercepted and Southampton were in front.

Stones thought he had made amends moments later, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.

Another tough lesson for the England man.

Moxley: City stars need to get back to doing jobs they’re supposed to do

Southampton travelled to the Etihad with the second-best defensive record in the Premier League - and it’s not difficult to see why.

Claude Puel has inherited a resolute backline from Ronald Koeman, marshalled by skipper Jose Fonte and the excellent Virgil van Dijk.

Even with back-up full-backs Cuco Martina and Sam McQueen in the side, the visitors looked so solid.

A large part of that is down to Van Dijk, who has been superb since moving south of the border and kept Sergio Aguero quiet here.

Koeman is trying to get his methods across at Everton but it will take time for his back-line to be as well drilled as this.

With Sadio Mane on his way to Liverpool, Southampton quickly moved to bring in Nathan Redmond and it is proving an inspired decision.

Plenty will have looked at the England Under-21 man after Norwich’s relegation but his inconsistency is likely to have put them off.

Under Puel, he has been given a different role - often asked to play central off Charlie Austin - and he is turning it on, on a regular basis.

While Stones teed him up, Redmond still had plenty to do and his finish exuded confidence as he rounded Bravo and found the net.

It was his second in as many games and further evidence that the 22-year-old is starting to fulfil his potential.

As we know by now, Pep will do it his way and is not bothered who he upsets.

The City boss dropped Sergio Aguero in midweek and as Sunday Mirror revealed, he could start next season with NONE of Roberto Mancini’s 2012 title winners.

At half-time, he decided his team needed more up top and brought on Kelechi Iheanacho.

The man making way? Kevin De Bruyne - City’s star player so far this season.

The Belgian wasn’t at his best in the first-half but he certainly wasn’t the only one.

Fortunately it appeared a masterstroke for Guardiola as Iheanacho grabbed the leveller.

The striker made an instant impact off the bench as he turned home Sane’s cross within miunutes of entering the fray.

Southampton will be sick of the sight of him too, with the Nigerian scoring twice at St. Mary’s last season.

He has a big future at the Etihad, make no mistake, but he has to be in Pep Guardiola’s thoughts right now.

Don’t rule out him starting at Old Trafford in midweek.

Stones 5 - Kamikaze back-pass let Redmond in to score.

Kolarov 6 - Put De Bruyne through early on. Little else.

Fernandinho 7 - Super angled ball to Sane to set up leveller.

Gundogan 6 - Denied goal by Forster save after the break.

Silva 6 - Sloppy early on but recovered thereafter.

Sterling 5 - Carried little attacking threat down the left.

Aguero 6 - Booked. First start in three. Flickered but not at his best.

Martina 6 - Given a tough time by Sane down his flank.

Romeu 7 - Screened back-four well and diligent on the ball.

Davis 6 - Organised and efficient in heart of midfield.

Clasie 6 - Booked. Put himself about in the middle. Subbed.

Tadic 6 - Stretched City on the break. Used the ball well.

Austin 6 - Had goal-bound shot saved by Bravo late on.

Manchester City 1-1 Southampton: Pep Guardiola’s side’s winless run continues

Show/hide article…

Manchester City’s run without a win stretched to five games in all competitions after Southampton held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

City, who handed starts to Vincent Kompany and Sergio Aguero, were behind in the 27th minute after John Stones’ poor back pass gifted Nathan Redmond the opener.

Stones thought he’s redeemed himself moments later when bundling Kevin De Bruyne’s free-kick into the back of the net, but it was ruled out after Aguero was adjudged to be standing in an offside position from the ball into the box.

However, City were back on level terms after the break when substitute Kelechi Iheanacho, on at half-time for Kevin De Bruyne, swept home Leroy Sane’s cross from close range.

There was a renewed hope around the Etihad after the goal and City pushed hard for a winner right until the death, but Southampton held on for a superb point.

Following the midweek disappointment against Barcelona, Guardiola brought in the fit again Kompany for his first Premier League start of the season, while Aguero was also restored to the starting line-up as City looked to end a run of four games without a victory.

However, Guardiola’s side made a sluggish start in what was a subdued atmosphere.

Chances were few and far between in the opening 15 minutes but Fernandinho tried to drive his side forward, flashing a cross across goal and just out of the reach of Raheem Sterling.

Southampton, who had settled into the game well, went forward through Tadic a few minutes later but his cross was easily gathered by Claudio Bravo.

Bravo was left stranded in the 27th minute though as Stones’ poor back pass allowed Redmond to steal in on goal. The winger still had plenty to do and rounded the Chilean before sliding the ball into the back of the net.

Stones thought he had made up for his error four minutes later, firing De Bruyne’s free-kick home, but the goal was disallowed after Aguero was ruled to be in an offside position.

The frustration continued for City right up until half time as Ilkay Gundogan drove wide before Aguero’s shot missed the target but Guardiola reacted at the break, bringing on Iheanacho.

It brought about a change in shape for the hosts and a change of fortunes as City claimed the equaliser after 55 minutes.

Fernandinho’s superb long-range pass picked out Leroy Sane and his low cross was expertly finished at the near post by Iheanacho for his eighth goal in 11 games.

Buoyed by the goal, City pushed forward at every opportunity and it was a case of backs to the wall for Saints, although Bravo was needed to keep out a powerful Charlie Austin drive.

At the other end, Fraser Forster kept the scores level, palming away Gundogan’s effort before saving David Silva’s strike.

Aguero threatened late on with a strong run into the penalty area, but the Argentina international pulled his shot across the face of goal.

Guardiola sent Jesus Navas and Nolito on for Kompany and Sane late on as they desperately searched for a winner, but it was to no avail as City, who went back to the top of the table on goal difference, made it five games without a win in all competitions.

Fonte reflects on valuable City point

Show/hide article…

The defender felt Saints could have done more, as they held Pep Guardiola’s side to a 1-1 draw at Etihad Stadium, with Nathan Redmond’s goal cancelled out by Kelechi Iheanacho’s close-range finish.

Fonte was frustrated with the way in which Saints conceded, but was happy to extend the unbeaten run in league matches to five games.

“Obviously it’s the first time in a few years that we have managed to get something from this game here,” Fonte said.

“We’re a little bit disappointed with how we conceded. We knew they would have more ball than us and that we would maybe suffer a little bit.

“We looked dangerous on the counter attack, a threat, but we’re disappointed to concede the goal. It’s a point gained, though.

“We’re not happy with how we were in possession, I think we can do better. But credit to Manchester City, they press well.

“We need to improve on that aspect. Defensively we were quite comfortable, but the other side we need to improve.”

Fonte’s disappointment further highlights the journey Saints have been on in recent years, and the defender feels the club is now in a position to be winning these matches.

“For three or four years we’ve felt like this. We can’t go back to where we were,” he added.

“We are a top club in England now. The standards have to be high. For us, we’re a little bit disappointed not to win, for sure.”

Puel: It’s a good point

Show/hide article…

Saints took the lead when Nathan Redmond was alert to a misplaced backpass from John Stones, before rounding Claudio Bravo to score.

And despite Kelechi Iheanacho’s leveller on 55 minutes, they showed their resilience again to not only keep City at bay, but threaten a winner themselves late on on the break.

Puel relflected: “I think it’s a good result for the squad and all the work today because it was a difficult game.

“We take a good opportunity in the first-half to score and afterwards we defend without difficulties in the first-half.

“It was important to keep good organisation and in the second-half it was difficult of course because the result of the game was important to this team.

“They had two days more recovery and we had to keep a good organisation as well as playing good on the counter attack with good transition.

“We had possibilities to score another goal but it’s a good point for us.”

Puel on Redmond and McQueen

Show/hide article…

Puel handed a first Premier League start to McQueen as he came in for the injured Matt Targett, following his performance at San Siro on Thursday night.

While Redmond, who has taken up a more central role in attack this season, showed great composure to put Saints ahead.

Puel said: “He’s a new striker! It’s important he makes progress and improves. He kept his calm in front of goal and took a good solution.

“It’s good for his future and for the team also. He had a little injury last week and it was important he recovered because he’s important for the team.”

For McQueen it has been quite the baptism of fire, having already made his Premier League debut last weekend against Burnley as well as being handed his first senior start against Internazionle.

And the Saints boss commended his work after playing two important games in such a short space of time.

He added: “He finished very tired. It’s fabulous for him to play in these games but it’s difficult to finish as it’s very physical.

“He played with a good structure and he gave all his possibilities today to work with the team.

“Perhaps he cannot take the wide role today but it was important to stay in place, keep that organisation and get this point. “

Manchester City 1-1 Southampton: Saints bag a point at the Etihad

Show/hide article…

Saints ensured that Manchester City’s mini-wobble continued as they produced a fantastic result by holding on for a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho equalised for the hosts after a mistake by John Stones gifted Saints’ Nathan Redmond the opening goal.

The result left City without a win in five games, equalling the worst run of Pep Guardiola’s managerial career, and while they returned to the top of the Premier League, it is only on goal difference from Arsenal and Liverpool.

City could feel hard done to after dominating possession, particularly in the second half, and having a Stones goal controversially ruled out for offside.

Yet after opening the season with 10 successive wins, the intensity does seem to have dropped temporarily, while Saints showed superb resolve, especially after their trip to Inter Milan on Thursday night.

After Wednesday’s heavy loss at Barcelona, there was a feeling City needed to make a statement but that did not happen and they could not rouse themselves enough after a subdued first-half performance.

Sergio Aguero was restored to the front line after his surprise omission in midweek - and some subsequent speculation about his future - while fit-again captain Vincent Kompany made his first league start since April.

City struggled to get going, with promising runs from Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane all coming to nothing.

Fernandinho did whip in a good cross from the right but Sterling was unable to get on the end of it.

Aleksandar Kolarov delivered a superb through ball for Kevin De Bruyne but the Belgian, mostly operating behind Aguero but sometimes drifting left, got the ball stuck under his feet.

City’s lack of cutting edge certainly suited Southampton, who struggled to gain any meaningful possession.

When they took the lead it came after a glaring error by Stones, who did not look up as he passed the ball back into the area in the 27th minute. Kompany was not on his wavelength and Redmond pounced, taking the ball wide of Claudio Bravo and smashing home.

The look on Stones’ face made clear the horror of his error, which will bring into further focus Guardiola’s determination to play out from the back at seemingly all costs.

Stones picked himself up and thought he had made quick amends as he raced in at the far post to tuck home a De Bruyne free-kick. He celebrated what he assumed was the equaliser with gusto but a flag had been raised for what appeared to be offside against Aguero.

The frustration continued for City as Ilkay Gundogan drove wide but the introduction of Iheanacho at half-time brought a change in shape, intensity and atmosphere.

Sterling was enlivened and curled a dangerous ball through the box before City claimed their equaliser after 55 minutes.

Fernandinho picked out Sane with a brilliant crossfield ball and his low cross was neatly tucked in by Iheanacho.

From then on it mainly became a case of Southampton digging in and looking to protect what they had, although Bravo was called upon to make one save from a Charlie Austin drive.

Fraser Forster kept Southampton level by palming away a Gundogan effort before saving Davod Silva’s long-range strike.

Aguero threatened with a strong run but was forced wide by Virgil van Dijk and shot across the face of goal.

Jesus Navas was sent on for Kompany late on to provide further attacking impetus but to no avail.

Southampton manager Claude Puel happy with point at Man City

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel was satisfied with his side’s point after they held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Nathan Redmond gave the visitors a first-half lead after latching onto John Stones’ poor back pass but substitute Kelechi Iheanacho struck back for City in the second-half to earn a share of the spoils.

And Puyol, who saw his side lose 1-0 to inter Milan in the San Siro on Thursday, was delighted with his side’s performance.

“I’m very satisfied,” he told Sky Sports. "I enjoyed it for my players because we worked very well with a good defensive organisation.

"It’s an interesting point for us because we can see the solidarity of our team. There was a good spirit but we can keep the ball a little better.

“I am happy for my players because of all the hard work they’ve put in this afternoon.”

Puel revealed his side finished the game extremely tired after coming into the clash against City with just two days recovery time following their Europa League exploits.

Despite their slender defeat in Milan, Southampton have been in excellent form in the Premier League, conceding just one goal in their last four games prior to Sunday’s draw.

When asked if his side could have come away with more against City, Puel said:"I’m not disappointed because City are a very good team.

"It was a strong game. It’s difficult to play against this team because their individual players can prove to be the difference.

“We played with just two days recovery after our game against Inter Milan. It’s difficult and we’ve finished this game very tired. I’m very satisfied with this point.”

Manchester City 1-1 Southampton: Puel reveals Saints motivation

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel helped motivate his side for their brilliant 1-1 draw at Manchester City by reminding them of their recent disappointments against high profile opposition.

Puel has seen his side put in excellent displays away to Manchester United, Arsenal and Inter Milan already this season, but on every occasion they have walked away empty handed.

The Saints boss told his team not to have the same regrets at the Etihad Stadium and it worked, as they held out for a fantastic point against Pep Guardiola’s Premier League table toppers.

“All is normal with the system and the philosophy and now they know what our identity of game is and it’s not a problem,” said Puel of his team.

“I said to them before the game we play against Manchester United, Arsenal and Inter Milan and every time we finish this game with a disappointment, because every time we had many chances, more than the opponent, and come back with a big frustration.

“It was important for this game to see our possibilities to have the confidence to play a good game and to come back with a good result.

“I think this point is important for the confidence and for the work of my players.”

Saints took the lead through Nathan Redmond and were put on the back foot in the second half when Kelechi Iheanacho equalised.

City poured forward and put Saints under immense pressure at times, but the team remained calm and collected, as well as hugely determined with their organisation helping shut out their illustrious opponents.

In the end they were good value for their point, and it was a result that Puel felt his team fully deserved, even if he was analysing things that could have gone better.

“I am happy of course for the point, but also with the spirit and the fantastic mentality of my players because it was a difficult game against this good team,” reflected the Saints manager.

“I think in the first half you score a good goal for us but it was important to keep a little more the ball and to play a little more on the ground.

“It was difficult against this team because they can make good pressing on our midfield and it was difficult to play our game.

“In the second time we keep a good defensive organisation to keep this result.

“We can do better sometimes in good transition with ball recovery and we can perhaps score another goal but I think it’s a good draw and a result normal with Manchester.”
