Southampton v Burnley

Show/hide article…

Southampton will be without full-backs Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertrand for the visit of Burnley.

Right-back Cedric suffered a foot problem last time out against Leicester while left-back Bertrand picked up a hamstring injury on international duty.

Burnley goalkeeper and captain Tom Heaton should be fit after a minor calf strain that forced him to withdraw from the England squad last weekend.

Forward Andre Gray serves the third game of a four-match ban.

Martin Fisher: "Like Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman before him, Claude Puel appears to have overcome the loss of key players over the summer to fashion a Southampton side that remains true to the club’s traditions.

"Saints are picking up points, are easy on the eye and difficult to beat.

"They’ve kept three clean sheets in a row in the Premier League (six in all competitions), and there’s every chance of extending that further against goal-shy Burnley, who are again without Andre Gray, as he serves a four-game ban.

“Success for the visitors rests on turning a defence that’s been so leaky on the road into the miserly outfit that turns up at Turf Moor.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche: "We have to be intent on doing what we do and have belief in what we do and so far we’ve had a solid start.

“We want that to continue, though we’re obviously aware it’s a tough place to go.”

I think Burnley are in for another tough afternoon at St Mary’s Stadium.

I have been impressed by Southampton boss Claude Puel, and it looks like Saints are set for another good season.

Bertrand and Cédric to miss Burnley

Show/hide article…

Bertrand picked up a hamstring injury while on international duty, while Cédric has a foot problem that has ruled him out.

Additionally, striker Shane Long will be assessed in training tomorrow, after suffering a small hamstring issue while in action with Republic of Ireland.

“We have some little problems with, for example, Bertrand and Cédric,” said Puel. "These players will be out for the game on Sunday.

“We will see with Long. He is a possibility perhaps. He has a little pain, but we will see this tomorrow in the training session.

“There is some pain in the hamstring for Bertrand and for Long, and Cedric has a problem in his foot with the ligament. For Cédric, it is two or three weeks without training.

"I hope this player comes back quickly, because it’s important for the group and all these games in a short time to have all the squad available.”

Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez could be fit to face his former employers when Burnley travel to St Mary’s on Sunday.

The forward is expected to recover from a knock in time and could be in contention to make only his second start of the campaign.

Saints defender Cedric Soares pulled out of Portugal’s squad last week after suffering an ankle injury and may miss out this weekend.

Burnley keeper Tom Heaton was another withdrawal over the international break, leaving England’s squad with a calf strain.

The 50 best players in the Premier League, 10-1: Arsenal and Manchester City dominate the top spots

But he is expected to be fit, while Clarets striker Andre Gray will serve the third match of his four-game ban for misuse of social media.

Southampton have lost just one of their last five league meeting against Burnley, winning two.

The Clarets have a wretched recent record at St Mary’s, winning only once in their last 14 trips to the South Coast, losing seven times.

Burnley could be forced to field a goalkeeper against Saints who hasn’t played for two years

Show/hide article…

Burnley are crossing their fingers that goalkeeper Tom Heaton is fit to face Saints on Sunday.

Heaton withdrew from the England squad last week due to a calf problem and is touch-and-go, with veteran Paul Robinson standing by.

Robinson, 36, joined Burnley on a free from Lancashire rivals Blackburn last January but has yet to play a senior game for the Clarets.

In fact, he hasn’t played a senior game for over TWO years - his last outing coming for Blackburn Rovers in September 2014.

Striker Andre Gray serves the third game of a four-match ban for historic social media posts but there are no other concerns.

Southampton will be without both of their first-choice full-backs for the visit of Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday.

Ryan Bertrand and Cedric are unavailable as they recover from hamstring and ankle injuries respectively meaning Matt Targett and Cuco Martina are expected to come in.

Shane Long is close to a return, also from a hamstring problem, and Jay Rodriguez could also feature after overcoming a groin strain.

Burnley are crossing their fingers that goalkeeper Tom Heaton is fit to face Southampton on Sunday.

Heaton withdrew from the England squad last week due to a calf problem and is touch-and-go, with veteran Paul Robinson standing by.

Striker Andre Gray serves the third game of a four-match ban for historic social media posts but there are no other concerns.

Southampton have lost just one of their last five league meetings with Burnley, winning two and drawing two.

On home soil, Saints have suffered just one defeat in their last 14 league clashes with Burnley (W7 D6).

Saints have kept six consecutive clean sheets in all competitions. They’ve only enjoyed a longer run once in their history (eight, ending in August 1922).

Burnley have enjoyed just two victories in their last 15 Premier League away games, drawing three and losing 10.

Southampton have unbeaten in eight Premier League games on home soil (W5 D3) a run bettered only by Leicester (19) and Liverpool (10).

Indeed, Saints have scored in each of their last 13 Premier League games at St. Mary’s, the best current run in the competition.

In his two previous Premier League games against former club Burnley, Charlie Austin has scored twice and been sent off.

Ten Burnley players have appeared in all seven Premier League games this season, more than any other club.

Steven Defour has been directly involved in a Premier League-high 80 per cent of his team’s goals this season, scoring one and assisting three of the Clarets’ five goals.

The Clarets have posted a Premier League-low 36.8 per cent average possession figure this season.

Puel reveals extent of Saints’ injury problems

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel has revealed that Saints will be without Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares for Sunday’s Premier League match against Burnley at St Mary’s.

With a monstrous fixture pile-up of seven games in just 22 days looming large, Puel has a stretched squad already.

Full backs Bertrand and Cedric are out for the Clarets’ visit, while striker Shane Long is 50/50 to be fit to play after a minor hamstring problem.

There is some good news with left back Matt Targett ready to step in for first choice Bertrand despite pulling out of the England Under-21 squad with a knock.

Bertrand was forced to withdraw from the England squad with a hamstring problem while Cedric has started his rehabilitation after limping out of the draw at Leicester two weeks’ ago.

Cuco Martina is in place to come in for Cedric.

Long meanwhile scored but was then was hauled off injured while on duty with the Republic of Ireland.

“There are some little problems with Bertrand and Cedric,” he said. “These players will be out for the game on Sunday.

“We will see with Long. There is a possibility he will play, but he has been in a bit of pain, but we will see tomorrow.”

Puel reported that Cedric would remain out for at least two weeks and admitted that he hopes to see some of his key men back soon with a punishing fixture pile-up on the horizon.

He said: “Some pain in the hamstring for Bertrand and for Long, and Cedric a problem in foot ligament.

“It’s for Cedric two or three weeks out.

“I hope these players will come back quickly because it’s important for the group and with all these games in such a short time it’s important to have the whole squad available.”

Bournemouth vs Hull is 819th different Premier League fixture – but what are the 11 best match-ups in the division’s history?

Show/hide article…

The slightly curious milestone got us thinking about what have been the greatest match-ups since the league started.

The main criteria we’ve used are: how much tended to be at stake in the matches, the disharmony between the teams, the quality of the matches, and the number of times they faced each other.

In the main, we’ve included rivalries that have become more heated in the last 20 years, rather than local derbies that have always been intense and are not ‘Premier League’ rivalries as such. That said, we’ve included local derbies if there has been particular spice in the Premier League meetings.

We’ll level with you, it’s not an exact science - but here goes:

A rivalry that has intensified considerably over recent years, and has included some of the great matches of the Premier League era.

Spurs’ 4-3 at Upton Park in March 2007 was an absolute humdinger, and was given extra spice by the fact that West Ham had beaten a ‘lasagne-poisoned’ Tottenham on the final day of the previous season to hand the final Champions League spot to Arsenal.

The discord between the two sides has increased further over the last few seasons, with some West Ham fans accused of anti-Semitic chanting, and the clubs clashing over the rights to the Olympic Stadium.

Paul Pogba replica shirts most popular ahead of Liverpool v Manchester United

Show/hide article…

Manchester United take on Liverpool in the Premier League on Monday Night Football - but they’re already winning the battle of the shirt sales.

Seven of the top 20 most popular replica shirts are Manchester United tops, according to sportsdirect.com - with Paul Pogba branded shirts proving to be the best-seller.

In comparison, just three of the 20 top-selling replicas bear the name of Liverpool players - Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

Pogba, the world’s most expensive player, may not have hit top form yet for Jose Mourinho’s side, but the excitement surrounding his record-breaking summer switch from Juventus has led to a surge in shirt sales.

The second most popular shirts are Zlatan Ibrahimovic United tops, followed by Arsenal kit branded with Alexis Sanchez’s name. Mane Liverpool shirts take fourth spot, while United goalkeeper jerseys with David de Gea’s name on the back complete the top five.

Marcus Rashford tops are the only ones featuring an Englishman to make the top 10, highlighting his brilliant breakthrough, less than a year after his first-team debut.

However, Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney, who held the honour of the top-selling replica shirt last season, has slipped in popularity, following a drop off of form and the arrival of star names at United. His replica shirts are currently down in 13th spot.
