Premier League Predictions: Liverpool to beat Man United, Arsenal to put record straight

Show/hide article…

Antonio Conte’s men desperately need a win to stay in the title race even at this early stage. Leicester have struggled to find their title-winning form of last season, partly because teams seem to have sussed them out. I don’t see anything but a Chelsea win in the early kick-off tomorrow. Arsene Wenger’s side have won five in a row and Swansea have lost five of their last six, so it’s difficult to look past Arsenal tomorrow. Swansea have a new manager in Bob Bradley and have a great record at the Emirates, having not lost since 2011, winning three of their last four there. The Swans always score when they travel to N5 and they will give the 60,000 Gunners a nervous afternoon but the home side will just edge it.

There’s just a point between these two sides after seven games in the Premier League and home form is likely to be crucial for both of them throughout the season. Eddie Howe’s men have more quality with the likes of Jack Wilshere and Callum Wilson likely to start and cause Hull problems in defence. The Cherries have four points from their last two matches and I think another three points will be secured in comfortable fashion on Saturday. This is a huge game for Pep Guardiola and his City side. Can they bounce back from their disappointing loss at Tottenham before the international break? City are sweating over the fitness of Kevin De Bruyne but if the Belgium star is passed fit, I think he can make the difference and push Guardiola’s men over the line. It’s also a big game for John Stones, who faces his old side for the first time since his £50m summer move.

Stoke and Sunderland have struggled to make any sort of impact in the Premier League so far this season. They are 19th and 20th in the table with no victories between them. But that is all going to change for Mark Hughes’ men this weekend. The Potters squad should be nowhere near the relegation zone and I think they’ll pick up a handsome win over the Black Cats who are too reliant on hitman Jermain Defoe. Spurs are the only unbeaten side left in the league and they won’t be relinquishing that record at the Hawthorns. Despite Harry Kane missing through injury, they’ve proven they are genuine title contenders after beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City last time out. The Baggies have won just one of their last seven home games under Tony Pulis and not even Tottenham old-boy Nacer Chadli will help better that record tomorrow.

West Ham come into this one in horrible form after their dismal start to the season and I expect their run to continue at Selhurst Park tomorrow. Christian Benteke has found his feet will shine again for the Eagles. He’ll cause the confidence-stricken Hammers plenty of problems and the former Aston Villa man will get on the scoresheet. Not even Dimitri Payet can save West Ham at the moment. This is a hard one to predict with Watford inconsistent but capable of a performance that can beat any team on their day thanks to the likes of Troy Deeney. The Hornets proved that against Manchester United last month at Vicarage Road but will find it tougher away at Middlesbrough. Both teams have conceded plenty of goals and this could be a high scoring affair.

VIDEO AND PHOTOS: Saints legend Franny nears the end of incredible race

Show/hide article…

IT IS the motivation he needs to keep him pounding the streets – the thought of coming home.

As Franny Benali nears the end of his mammoth charity endurance challenge, his thoughts are turning to Southampton.

He has already run 700,000 steps as he continues his incredible challenge to cycle and run to all 44 Premiership and Championship grounds in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Yesterday he set off from Norwich’s ground before visiting Ipswich on his way to Tottenham Hotspur’s ground, White Hart Lane.

From there he will set off today for a route through the capital where he will receive the support of scores of well wishers. before setting his sights for the South Coast.

Speaking last night the former Southampton player and fan’s favourite, said: “I can’t wait to get back to Southampton, knowing it will be the finish – and I can have a lie in!

“But I’m not wanting to take anything for granted, especially knowing how some of my injuries and niggles are. It’s reminding me that there’s a long way to go yet.

“I’m looking forward to completing it now and hopefully raising a huge amount of money.

“It feels very much like we’re heading south now so heading towards London. We’ll be in and around London tomorrow, then it will back down to Brighton which will be the last club before we hit St Marys.

“I’m visualising it a little bit but I’m not taking it for granted. I’ve got one eye on the end but I don’t want to take anything for granted.”

Speaking about the challenge, he added: “I’m enjoying finishing each day, that’s a good time of the day.

"Knowing that another day is over and I can start the recovery process.

"It’s nice knowing you’re getting closer and closer to the finish now so not too many more days.

"I would have liked it to have settled down a little bit more than what it actually has overnight. We’ll see how we get on, try and plough through it.”

Of the support he has been getting, Franny said: “Everyone’s amazing.

“A huge thank you from me for all the support and well wishers, messages and donations.

“Please keep them coming in. A big thank you.”

Among his supporters are Southampton singer Craig David and pop star Ronan Keating who have both sent well wishes.

Rodriguez ready to put injury woes behind him

Show/hide article…

JAY Rodriguez is hoping luck will be on his side so that he can finally put his injury nightmares behind him.

The striker is eyeing a return from his latest fitness setback against Burnley on Sunday, the club where he started his career.

Rodriguez, who has been out for three weeks with a groin issue, has been utterly luckless with injuries.

In one way or another striker has been on the sidelines with fitness issues on and off for more than two years now.

The 27-year-old’s first big blow was an ACL tear at Manchester City in 2014 that kept him out of the entire 2014/15 season.

After battling back, he was then on the treatment table again last term with a foot problem.

After a good pre-season, this campaign started brightly with goals against Sunderland and Sparta Prague, but he has since spent another time recovering from this latest groin injury.

But, with yet another comeback on the horizon against his former club on Sunday, Rodriguez, who Saints bought from Turf Moor for £7m in 2012, is hoping his woes finally disappear.

“It’s been a very tough time,” he told the Burnley Express. "I’ve been unlucky with a few injuries.

"The knee is fine now, but I’ve had a run of niggles that have set me back.

"I’ve worked hard and kept my head down and hopefully I’ll get a bit of luck and have a good season, that’s my aim.

"I’m hoping to be fit for the game. I’ve had a tight groin, but I’ve taken the opportunity to get some rehab with the physio to stop it getting any tighter.

"There’s no problem with the scan, I’ve just had a bit of discomfort.

"But I feel good and I’m looking forward to it.

"There are a lot of games coming up and I’m just trying to get a run of games now.

"I felt sharp in pre-season, I had a full pre-season so my fitness is there, it’s just trying to get that match fitness now with games.

Romeu named Player of the Month

Show/hide article…

Oriol Romeu has been voted as Southampton’s Under Armour Player of the Month for September.

The midfielder earned 47 per cent of the vote from supporters, triumphing ahead of fellow nominees Charlie Austin, Fraser Forster and Virgil van Dijk.

Romeu was a key component of the side that won four consecutive matches during the month, while also helping them earn a 0-0 draw away to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League – with Saints keeping a clean sheet in each of those five games.

“I’m very happy," Romeu told southamptonfc.com. "I think it’s something nice and I’m very happy to get it.

“It tells us that the fans are happy with us, with the players and I think the last results have been very good and everyone now is enjoying it much more.

“We just want to keep them happy and win more games."

Reflecting on the team’s excellent run of form in September, Romeu said: "I think we changed the results.

"The type of play was quite similar at the beginning, but we needed to improve a few details in our game.

“We got the clean sheets, which is very hard to get, and the team is looking much sharper and much more difficult to beat, and I think that is very good news.”
