Puel: We must be focused

Show/hide article…

Southampton are six unbeaten heading into a meeting with Burnley, as well as keeping six clean sheets in those games.

The visit of the Clarets kicks off a big week of fixtures for the club and with Inter Milan and Manchester City to come, Puel has been discussing the impact the break has had on his side.

“It’s important to find that great spirit and dynamic we had before the international break again.

“The first game is very important and it’s difficult to keep good concentration.

“For us though, during the international break we had 15 players which is a lot but it is a good thing because it shows we have good players.

He added: “To work (without them) is difficult and some players perhaps have tired legs from their international games.

“Other players are without competition for two weeks so sometimes it can be difficult to prepare.”

Southampton v Burnley preview: Saints without first-choice full-backs for Burnley clash

Show/hide article…

Southampton are without both of their first-choice full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares for the visit of Burnley on Super Sunday.

Bertrand and Cedric are unavailable as they recover from hamstring and ankle injuries respectively meaning Matt Targett and Cuco Martina are expected to come in.

Saints, who are unbeaten at home all season and unbeaten in all competitions since September 10, are up against a Burnley side who have seven points from seven games following a mixed start to their Premier League return.

They lost late on against Arsenal last time out, and are yet to pick up a point on the road this term.

Other than the problems at full-back for Saints, Shane Long is close to a return, also from a hamstring problem, and Jay Rodriguez could also feature after overcoming a groin strain.

Burnley are crossing their fingers that goalkeeper Tom Heaton is fit to face Southampton on Sunday.

Heaton withdrew from the England squad last week due to a calf problem and is touch-and-go, with veteran Paul Robinson standing by.

Striker Andre Gray serves the third game of a four-match ban for historic social media posts but there are no other concerns.

Southampton have lost just one of their last five league meetings with Burnley, winning two and drawing two.

On home soil, Saints have suffered just one defeat in their last 14 league clashes with Burnley (W7 D6).

Saints have kept six consecutive clean sheets in all competitions. They’ve only enjoyed a longer run once in their history (eight, ending in August 1922).

Burnley have enjoyed just two victories in their last 15 Premier League away games, drawing three and losing 10.

Southampton have unbeaten in eight Premier League games on home soil (W5 D3) a run bettered only by Leicester (19) and Liverpool (10).

Indeed, Saints have scored in each of their last 13 Premier League games at St. Mary’s, the best current run in the competition.

In his two previous Premier League games against former club Burnley, Charlie Austin has scored twice and been sent off.

10 Burnley players have appeared in all seven Premier League games this season, more than any other club.

Steven Defour has been directly involved in a Premier League-high 80% of his team’s goals this season, scoring one and assisting three of the Clarets’ five goals.

The Clarets have posted a Premier League-low 36.8% average possession figure this season.

Southampton are a good team and I think some people are underestimating them. You look at their back four and they wouldn’t look out of place at a club like Arsenal.

They should have won easily at Leicester, and I don’t care what standard of football you are playing, to keep six straight clean sheets like they’ve done is some achievement.

Southampton are on a six-game unbeaten run and are 2/5 with Sky Bet for another victory on Sunday against Burnley.

The visitors are 15/2, with the draw 100/30. Saints have not conceded a goal in any of those last six games, and are even-money to win to nil at St Mary’s.

Charlie Austin just shades favouritism in the first goalscorer betting at 100/30 ahead of Shane Long (7/2) and Nathan Redmond (4/1).

Southampton boss Claude Puel does not care about clean-sheet record

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel would trade missing out on a 94-year club record for clean sheets if it means securing victory against Burnley on Sunday.

The Saints are bidding to register their seventh consecutive clean sheet at St Mary’s, with their defence unbeaten since a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on September 10.

Puel’s men are now just two clean sheets short of matching a club record that stretches back to 1922 when Southampton managed eight in a row.

However, two goalless draws against Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League and Premier League champions Leicester City, have left Puel more concerned about his team’s performance at the other end of the pitch.

The Frenchman said: "I prefer to lose this record and win the game, it’s not important for me. Of course it’s interesting because you show you are strong and with a good solidarity but most important is to win the game.

“If you can score two or three goals it would be fantastic, even if you concede one or two goals. It is not a problem for me.”

Burnley have also struggled for goals this season - failing to score in any of their three away matches - while Southampton boast the third-best defensive record in the top flight.

“It’s not just the defence. For me, it’s important to consider it as the work of all the team - midfield and offensive players also,” Puel said.

"It’s also our style of play, we often have the ball and it’s easier to defend with good control of the game. I prefer my team to play good football.

“When they have the ball there is not a possibility for the opponent to have chances.”

Sunday’s game kicks off a hectic period for Southampton, as they will play seven games over 22 days in all competitions.

After Burnley, the Saints will face Inter Milan in the Europa League before tough tests against Manchester City and Chelsea, either side of an EFL Cup fourth-round tie against Sunderland. They will then host Inter in the reverse fixture and travel to Hull before the next international break.

Puel added: "The first and most important thing now is Burnley. After we can speak about Inter Milan. Inter Milan is another competition, it is not just one game, it is a mini-championship to qualify from the group.

“It’s important to keep this in mind and accept all the time to change the team and keep the good level.”

Puel will be without full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric for their Nissan Super Sunday clash against Burnley as they recover from hamstring and ankle injuries respectively.

Republic of Ireland striker Shane Long is also a doubt due to a slight hamstring problem, while Southampton’s record-signing Sofiane Boufal has resumed training after a knee injury but is still regaining match fitness.
