U23 Preview: Valery benefiting from experience

Show/hide article…

The right-back has been a regular fixture and could well feature as Saints visit Arsenal in Premier League 2 action tonight.

The Frenchman, who is still just 17, said: "I think the pre-season with the first-team helped me, to see what that level is, so when I came back with my age group I tried to work more on my one-v-one defending, my heading, with the coaches and I think now I am better defensively, but I still have things to improve on.”

Valery will be hoping to help second-placed Saints continue their strong start to the season as they visit Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park stadium this evening.

"I think it will be a good game against a good team,” he said. “I hope we take three points, because we are a good team too. If we play our football I think we can take three points.

"I think there will be a lot of attack v defence. They have good attacking players, but if we keep possession and we wait for the good moments I think we can score and win.”

U23 Preview: Jaïdi on Arsenal trip

Show/hide article…

Saints have started the season strongly, sitting second in Premier League 2, and will be hoping to continue their form, as they visit Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park stadium for the clash with the Gunners.

"Arsenal is always a good team, full of good individuals,” said Jaïdi. “They like to control and dominate the game.

“As I said, they have some quality up front and in the wide and midfield areas, so we will try to stop them, deal with their strengths and use their weaknesses.”

Saints’ last outing saw them record a 2-1 win at Colchester United in the Checkatrade Trophy, and Jaïdi hopes they can now take that experience forwards.

"It was really a good experience for the younger boys to be involved in this kind of competition, playing against older, senior boys,” he said.

“It gives them a taste of what the next level looks like, and that’s what we’re trying to do all the time – challenge the boys, whether in the academy or playing different competitions, because we’re trying to send them to the next level.”

There has already been plenty of progression among the academy players this season, with some of the Under-23s making inroads into the first-team, while Jaïdi and Technical Director Martin Hunter have made regular use of some of the Under-18s.

"That’s what we are about in this academy,” said Jaïdi. “We are showing the path to the players. It’s not just talk, we show them and give them that opportunity if they show a good performance.

“Players who perform with the 18s can find themselves easily with the 23s, then you see 23s boys training with the first-team day in and day out, so that’s what it’s all about.”

Liverpool vs Man Utd, Claudio Ranieri returns to Chelsea: 10 reasons to feel nostalgic about this weekend’s Premier League football

Show/hide article…

Fear not. The Premier League returns again this weekend after another rather inconvenient international diversion - and there’s a whiff of nostalgia in the air.

Here, with the help of Opta, are 10 reasons why you should feel somewhat sentimental ahead of this weekend’s football:

It won’t have the same impact as that wonderful final-day reunion last season, but that won’t stop Chelsea supporters giving Claudio Ranieri a warm welcome this weekend when champions Leicester head to Chelsea.

Ranieri has played Chelsea twice in the league as an opposing manager, beating Jose Mourinho’s Blues at the King Power last December and drawing on that May return earlier this year.

But history is against the Foxes. They haven’t won at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League since September 2000, when Muzzy Izzet and Stan Collymore secured three points.

Saints stars hoping for another fruitful reunion

Show/hide article…

CHARLIE Austin and Jay Rodriguez will be hoping to maintain their great scoring records against former club Burnley this weekend.

Austin has only played twice against the Clarets since he left them to join QPR in the summer of 2013 - and he has netted in both games.

Rodriguez has also faced Burnley just once since he left Turf Moor in July 2012 to sign for Saints - and he also scored in that game, an FA Cup tie in January 2014.

Austin grabbed a goal in each of QPR’s two Premier League games against Burnley in 2014/15, though he was also sent off for two yellow cards in the 2-0 win at Loftus Road - the only sending off in his professional career.

Austin enjoyed a record breaking career at Burnley following his arrival in January 2011 from Swindon Town.

Signed by then Clarets boss Eddie Howe, Austin scored 41 goals in 82 league appearances for Burnley - exactly one in every two games.

That was a far better ratio than Rodriguez, whose 31 league goals in 105 league appearances for Burnley were scored at a rate of 0.29 per game.

In his first full campaign at Turf Moor, 2011/12, Austin netted 17 goals in 46 appearances - including a hat-trick in the last 16 minutes of Burnley’s 5-1 win at Fratton Park.

Remarkably, he scored in 12 of the Clarets’ first 14 league and cup games.

In all, he scored 18 goals in those 14 matches including league trebles against Peterborough and Sheffield Wednesday.

Austin became the quickest-ever Burnley player to reach 20 goals in a season after scoring in a 1–0 win over Leeds — his 17th appearance of 2012/13.

Having reached 23 goals by the end of December, Austin only netted five more times all season but still finished with 28 goals from 40 appearances.

Twenty four of them were in the league, the third highest total after Glenn Murray (30) and Jordan Rhodes (27).

Austin has currently scored 121 league goals in 233 appearances - netting at an impressive rate of 0.51 per game.

As a comparison, Saints legend Rickie Lambert’s league ratio is 0.36 (216 goals in 595 appearances).

Rodriguez is hoping to have recovered from a groin injury to face his former club. He has not played since he came on as a sub and scored in the Europa League win against Sparta Prague a month ago tomorrow.

In addition to his three sub outings this term, Rodriguez has made one start - where he was taken off at Arsenal on September 10.

Puel assesses Saints squad

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel is assessing the state of his Saints squad as they return to Staplewood following the international break.

Puel had 15 players away with their countries, and faces some tricky decisions as he prepares for the start of seven games in 22 days.

With several major injury doubts to contend with, Puel also has to try and work out which of his players are fresh enough to face Burnley on Sunday.

Puel has already made clear he likes to work ahead in busy periods, so once he decides upon the Burnley team he will then try and plan for the away double header against Inter Milan and Manchester City.

Saints’ players figured for a combined total of 1,522 minutes during this international break.

In contrast, Burnley, who don’t have the Europa League fixture congestion to worry about, had international representation for about half that total of Saints – some 797 minutes.

They had just eight players away, giving Sean Dyche the majority of his squad to work with over the last fortnight, while Puel had hardly anybody left.

Maya Yoshida had the most gruelling of trips as he has to travel back from Australia, having also played two full matches during the break.

Dusan Tadic, Jose Fonte, Virgil van Dijk and Steven Davis also played two full games for their countries, while Nathan Redmond, Shane Long and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg featured in both of their nation’s fixtures.

Burnley, on the other hand, had just two players playing 90 minutes twice.

Saints have some well documented injury problems – in addition to the likes of Soufiane Boufal and Jay Rodriguez coming back from injury lay-offs.

For Burnley, goalkeeper Tom Heaton picked up a minor calf problem while away with England.

If Heaton is sidelined for Sunday’s game, Nick Pope – a 24-year-old summer signing from Charlton – could make his Premier League debut.

Puel lays plans for epic fixture pile-up

Show/hide article…

CLAUDE Puel is facing one of the most gruelling fixture pile-ups in Saints history with his squad already stretched because of injury.

The St Mary’s chief starts a punishing run of seven games in three ultra-hectic weeks starting against Burnley at home on Sunday.

It includes two games against Inter Milan in the Europa League, a trip to Premier League leaders Manchester City and the visit of Chelsea to St Mary’s All of that comes rammed into 22 blockbuster days that also sees Saints go up against Sunderland in the EFL Cup last-16 and travel to Hull.

But Saints begin the crucial and demanding period with question marks over a number of their players.

There is uncertainty over left backs Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett, who both pulled out of international duties through injury, as well as right back Cedric Soares after he limped out against Leicester two weeks ago.

Shane Long is another worry after he hobbled off while playing the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifier.

It will be the biggest challenge of Puel’s squad management skills so far.

The manager has made a colossal 44 changes in his last six games, but nobody can argue it hasn’t been successful with Saints going unbeaten without conceding a goal.

The Frenchman has essentially set Saints up with two interchangeable starting elevens for the Europa League and Premier League, with a few key men that aren’t really droppable forming the backbone.

Virgil van Dijk, Oriol Romeu and goalkeeper Fraser Forster make up that almost ever-present starting spine of the team which Puel knows gives the team a solid base to then build his team around.

Those three were rested for the EFL Cup win over Crystal Palace, but only to give the likes of Harrison Reed and back-up keeper Alex McCarthy a chance in a fairly low key match.

The only player to have played some part in all of Puel’s first ten games in charge is Nathan Redmond, who started all but two games in all competitions. Although his continual presence could change in the upcoming run with record signing Sofiane Boufal nearly ready to compete for a place after knee injury.

The St Mary’s chief most prominent bailiwick during his early reign has been his squad management, shuffling his pack constantly.

He has used his entire squad to great effect, ensuring that he has fresh players to select from even during a punishing run of games like the one they’ve just experienced.

Now Puel, who has used 22 players this season, must do it all over again - but this time it is set to be even more difficult if players aren’t able to shake-off injury worries.

The Soccer Saturday pundits make their Red Monday predictions

Show/hide article…

The Soccer Saturday pundits provide us with their predictions for the latest installment of one of football’s great rivalries, Liverpool hosting Manchester United live on Monday Night Football.

The hosts are considered favourites as they head into on the clash on the back of four successive wins, a run which has seen them leapfrog their great rivals and climb to fourth in the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho’s men have slipped to sixth following just one win during that run, but the travelling fans can take confidence from back-to-back league victories at Anfield.

Here’s what the Soccer Saturday pundits are predicting in their Sky Bet tips…

Both sides have their vulnerabilities but I think Liverpool are better at exploiting them in the form they are in, with Jurgen Klopp’s front four like the Red Arrows the way they interchange with creativity and pace.

I was actually considering backing a 2-0 win but Liverpool are yet to keep a clean sheet in the league so far this season. They’re still vulnerable in the air and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be a threat from set-pieces.

I think the big one is going to be Mane, mainly because of his pace against Manchester United’s back line. He’s the one player really that I think can exploit them.

Marcus Rashford is obviously quick and has tremendous potential but I think with Mane’s experience against United’s back line he will cause them tremendous problems, when there’s a turnover of position is when he really comes into his own.

Thommo predicts: 2-1 and Mane to score first (30/1 with Sky Bet)

I think this is the biggest game in the league calendar. It’s proper match with superstars under super managers and this is England’s equivalent to the Old Firm. When these two go head-to-head, it’s a global battle.

Jurgen Klopp will not change anything, going with his four attacking players and willing to take risks, whereas Jose Mourinho will look to sit in, flooding the midfield with two protectors in front of his defence.

I don’t to sit on the fence but Mourinho just makes me think that this United side, which are the inferior side right now, can get something out of it by exploiting Liverpool’s biggest vulnerabilities, defending set-pieces.

Well I would be saying Jose Mourinho but in terms of on the pitch, in principle Liverpool are the best team but I think Eric Bailly is one that could be a saviour or make a crucial mistake.

He is so rough and so raw but with great pace, which gets you out of a lot of problems. I’ve been watching him for two years at Villarreal and he hasn’t really improved that much.

The decision making will gradually get there under Mourinho’s guidance and he’s got so much to take on board. These might be the type of games where he stands up and proves himself or he could easily be the man who makes a rash decision in the penalty box.

Charlie predicts: 1-1 and Chris Smalling to score first (175/1 with Sky Bet)

I think that Klopp has had a bit more time with his team than Mourinho has and it’s reflected in the way they are formed. More cohesive is the word I’m looking for.

It’s probably a good time to play United in that sense, before Mourinho gets his team organised. He has suffocated games like this in the past but I think the energy of Klopp’s team will make the difference.

He’s definitely a match-winner on his day and seems to be in one of those streaks of form where he’s playing as good as anybody.

It is another good test for him though in terms of standing up in big matches for a big club, not that Southampton aren’t that!

He’s stood up to the test well so far and certainly didn’t do too bad in the first game of the season against Arsenal, so I think he’s able to produce on the big stage.

Le Tiss predicts: 2-1 and Mane to score first (30/1 with Sky Bet)

I don’t think Manchester United will be able to live with Liverpool’s attacking players. If Liverpool start quickly they will have too much at Anfield.

This is a big game for United because I’m predicting Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Tottenham all to win, and the gap can grow quickly. All the top teams are capable of stringing six wins together so you don’t want to be playing catch-up this early.

But I’m not sure Mourinho knows his best team yet and he needs to get that sorted. They played well for 20 minutes against Stoke, but for a large part of that game they didn’t look like scoring.

Considering the way Liverpool press high, I think Man Utd will struggle to open the game up.

Sadio Mane has really impressed me. He’s been quick, sharp and chipped in with goals. Sometimes I think he surprises himself with what he does, and that’s not being horrible, so no wonder he catches defenders out.

He can blow a little hot and cold, but he’s hot more often than cold these days and I think he will be too lively for Manchester United.

You can watch Liverpool v Man Utd, plus England’s tour of Bangladesh and the British Masters on Sky Sports. Upgrade now and enjoy six months at half price!

Liverpool and Manchester United resume bitter rivalry at Anfield

Show/hide article…

Liverpool’s long-standing rivalry with Manchester United is renewed on Monday, as Jurgen Klopp’s side face Jose Mourinho’s men at Anfield.

Elsewhere, Everton travel to Manchester City, looking to pick up where Tottenham left off before the international break. Spurs inflicted Pep Guardiola’s first defeat as City boss on Oct. 2, and the Catalan will be looking for a response.

At the other end of the table, it’s an early relegation scrap, as the league’s two winless sides, Stoke and Sunderland, do battle.

Who will come out on top? Predict the winners in each Premier League match by voting in our polls.

LIVERPOOL: The visit of Manchester United is the fixture Liverpool supporters look forward to more than any other, and with the Kop’s public enemy No.1 Mourinho now in charge of United, the game has added spice. Throw in the fact it’s a night game under the lights and Anfield is sure to be a cauldron of emotion on Monday. On such occasions the Reds usually come out on top.

Prediction: Liverpool 3-2 Manchester United – David Usher

MAN UNITED: Mourinho got it wrong for his first big game in charge of United, the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City, so hopefully he has been working out a way to get a better result against Liverpool. He has a good record against them and United have won their last four league games against them too. That said, Liverpool have started the season well and have a new found confidence with Klopp. Being at home further tips the balance in their favour. Prediction: Manchester United 2-2 Liverpool – Scott Patterson

MAN CITY: Clear of the international break at last, City need to restart their winning ways after hiccups at Celtic and Tottenham. Everton, with results slipping after a good start, are looking for a first league win over City since March 2013. Can Ronald Koeman achieve what David Moyes regularly did and throw a spanner in the works?

Prediction: Manchester City 2-1 Everton – Simon Curtis

EVERTON: Guardiola’s Manchester City are Everton’s biggest test thus far and should indicate the current level of this new-look squad. Romelu Lukaku’s fitness is key, as his absence would make a difficult fixture that much tougher while the Blues aim to bounce back from a three-game winless run before the international break.

Prediction: Manchester City 2-1 Everton – Luke O’Farrell

CHELSEA: A return to winning ways at Hull that featured just the second clean sheet of the season was most welcome, even if it still saw a slow start for the third straight match. A repeat against champions Leicester could be disastrous because, although their league form might be erratic, in Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez they possess players capable of exploiting any lethargy, while new signing Islam Slimani has shown he knows his route to goal.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Leicester – Phil Lythell

LEICESTER: An away trip to Chelsea is the last thing Leicester need. The match sees Claudio Ranieri return to his former club and last time, he received a guard of honour as City celebrated an unlikely Premier League title on the final game of 2015-16. Five months later and the visit to Stamford Bridge is likely to be a more humbling experience. City can’t stop shipping goals on the road and that isn’t likely to change in Saturday’s early kickoff. Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Leicester – Ben Jacobs

ARSENAL: With seven wins in eight games, Arsenal should have enough forward momentum to resist any new manager bounce from the appointment of Bob Bradley. The defence looks sound and the attack has clicked: this should be fairly comfortable.

Prediction: Arsenal 2-0 Swansea – Tom Adams

SWANSEA: The Swans have a good record against Arsenal, and the away side have a good record in this fixture, with the visitors winning the last three. Swansea are the away side on Saturday, and given the team will be likely trying to impress new manager Bradley, Swansea’s hex over Arsenal might yet continue.

Prediction: Arsenal 1-2 Swansea – Max Hicks

STOKE: It’s a basement blockbuster at the bet365 Stadium, where Stoke will be eager to build on their run of (slightly) improved form against the only side in the league worse off than they are. Fans will be hoping that Joe Allen recovers from the injury he picked up on international duty to inspire the Potters to their first three points of the season.

Prediction: Stoke 2-0 Sunderland – James Whittaker

SUNDERLAND: Another painful disappointment or a game that finally kick-starts the season? Squad deficiencies have worsened with injuries and Sunderland must be wary of the bounce Stoke may get from an unexpected point at Manchester United. But there is always hope that Jermain Defoe, just turned 34, can be a hero in manager Moyes’ time of need.

Prediction: Stoke 0-1 Sunderland – Colin Randall

WEST BROM: The Baggies return from the international break facing a tough run of fixtures, beginning with a home game against Tottenham. Tony Pulis will need Darren Fletcher and Claudio Yacob on top form to deal with a powerful, technically gifted Spurs midfield.

Prediction: West Brom 0-2 Tottenham – Matthew Evans

TOTTENHAM: Following impressive wins against CSKA Moscow and Manchester City, Spurs will approach this game with optimism. The one fly in the ointment is the possible disruption caused by the international break: Mauricio Pochettino will have three days at most to reunite his squad. But Spurs should be full of confidence.

Prediction: West Brom 0-2 Tottenham – John Crace

CRYSTAL PALACE: The Eagles face a West Ham side struggling for comfort at home, laying the foundations for frustration in away games too. Palace have a great opportunity to continue their unbeaten run and with Christian Benteke scoring goals for fun at the moment, they have the perfect attacker to help them with that goal.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 3-1 West Ham – Rob Sutherland

WEST HAM: Quite which West Ham team is likely to emerge after the international break is anybody’s guess. The Hammers need to start winning soon and overcoming local rivals would be a good start. Palace are in good form however and it will be difficult.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 2-2 West Ham – Peter Thorne

BOURNEMOUTH: The Cherries will be expecting all three points this weekend as they host a struggling Hull side who have conceded 12 goals in their last four games. Bournemouth also found some form themselves before the international break and it looks like Eddie Howe has finally discovered his best XI. A routine win.

Prediction: Bournemouth 2-0 Hull – Will Kent

HULL CITY: After a horror run of games brought consecutive defeats against Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, the emphasis will be on Hull City avoiding a fourth league loss in succession at Bournemouth. The away games at Swansea and Burnley this season ought to provide optimism after returning four points and so long as confidence is still intact, the Tigers can return from the south coast with a draw. Few would grumble at that outcome. Prediction: Bournemouth 1-1 Hull – Phil Buckingham

SOUTHAMPTON: Saints can move a step closer to breaking a 94-year-old club record for successive clean sheets by recording a seventh successive shutout against a Burnley side yet to score away from home. In-form striker Charlie Austin will be confident of netting against his former club.

Prediction: Southampton 2-0 Burnley – Alex Crook

BURNLEY: The Clarets have yet to score a goal away from home this season and while their new 4-5-1 shape has proven effective at home in the absence of suspended striker Andre Gray, there are concerns lone striker Sam Vokes will be too isolated against a team as comfortable on the ball as Southampton. The Saints have kept six clean sheets in a row and are likely to extend that run on Sunday, while former Claret Austin is bound to score against his old club again. Prediction: Southampton 2-0 Burnley – Jamie Smith

MIDDLESBROUGH: Boro need to pick up the pace and start picking up the points to jump start their lacklustre season. Watford are ideal opponents, as they are not yet Premier League heavyweights and have defensive flaws that a more innovative Boro lineup could exploit. However, Watford have scored more goals than any other side in the bottom half, so it may be a cagey affair from both teams.

Prediction: Middlesbrough 1-1 Watford – Catherine Wilson

WATFORD: Troy Deeney needs one more goal to reach the 100 mark for the Hornets and having scored on six occasions against Middlesbrough in the past, he’ll be hopeful of reaching the landmark on Sunday. The International break provided Walter Mazzarri a chance to work on the defensive shape of his team, who are yet to keep a clean sheet this season. Achieving one here would be a welcome fillip after indifferent recent form. Prediction: Middlesbrough 0-1 Watford – Mike Parkin

Can Liverpool keep up their good form with a win over arch rivals Manchester United at Anfield? Will Manchester City hit back following defeat at Tottenham by beating Everton at home?

Premier League clubs’ Twitter accounts rated and slated - how does yours fare?

Show/hide article…

Any football fan with half a grasp of modern technology will find him or herself on the Twitter page of a Premier League club with some regularity. It’s how we get our news, and very convenient it is too.

Yet how often do we actually look at the pages themselves and really drink in the information on display there? Not often. Some of us have lives, after all.

Well fear not, dear reader, for – at the behest of literally no one – your humble correspondent has pored over the Twitter profiles of all 20 Premier League clubs to rescue you from comfortable ignorance.

This is not a quest to find the best and worst tweeters, but rather an assessment of the presentation of each account, taking into account the Twitter handle, the bio and the header photo, examining how each represents the club. (We’ve ignored the profile pictures because they’re literally all just of badges. Complaints to the usual place.)

Each of the three categories is scored out of 10, so the totals are nominally out of 30. But there’s the chance for bonuses and deductions, meaning you should probably just abandon any expectation for anything resembling coherency at the outset. Sorry in advance.

On with the show.

Bio: Good to know that the official club website brings us the latest news. I was worried for a while back there. Nice foreign-language options, though. 7

Header photo: Using the squad photo is a good idea - and a surprisingly underused one. But the heads of the players on the top row are chopped off on desktop and Francis Coquelin’s facial expression should probably come with a warning to children. 6

Bonuses and deductions: Have been known to start tweets with quotes from Arsene Wenger with “Boss:”. Two points knocked off.

Handle: One of only two clubs to stick resolutely to the lower case, which is enjoyably rebellious. But at 15 characters (including the @), it’s not very space-efficient. 5

Bio: A solid list of things to expect. Kudos for the lack of needless hashtaggery but that Oxford comma has to go. 7

Header photo: Moody and, with all three kits on display, presumably good for the commercial department. 7

Bonuses and deductions: No Vine account, no links to other accounts, no hashtags. An additional point for minimalism.

Handle: Having ‘official’ in there isn’t ideal, especially when @Burnley is just a shell of an account with 39 followers. Have a word. 3

Bio: It’s not clear why Burnley’s in-house video player needs its own Twitter profile, but we’ll let that go. What follows is an ungainly list of accounts on other platforms that could really do with just being links (see Stoke’s account for an example how it’s done). 3

Bonuses and deductions: Only joined Twitter in 2011, so relative latecomers to the format. 10% sympathy bonus.

Handle: @Chelsea was the prime real estate, but this is still good. 8

Header photo: Another squad, but properly cropped to fit mobile and desktop. Give that social media intern a pat on the back. 8

Bonuses and deductions: Chelsea have liked 10.3k tweets - the highest number in the Premier League by a country mile. Generosity or low standards? I’m erring towards the latter. One-point penalty.

Bio: Pretty much the default football club bio, plus some Instagram action for the kids. Interestingly (…), the only club to put the dots in ‘F.C.’, indicating an eye for detail if nothing else. 6

Header photo: You couldn’t have found one of him facing towards the camera? 4

Bonuses and deductions: Their location is listed as ‘South London & Proud’, which, aside from the needless capitalisation of the final word, is a nice touch. Have a point on us.

Bio: There’s full-on history lesson condensed into the character limit here, which is no mean feat. And there’s still space for a couple of hashtags, the acronym of the club’s motto and a helpful link. 8

Header photo: The Toffees have gone for the Championship-Manager-background-screen look here. Credit for refusing to follow the crowd, but it’s a bit lifeless. 2

Bonuses and deductions: First tweeted back in December 2008, making them the Premier League’s founding fathers on Twitter. That’s worth a 10% bonus.

Handle: Maximum points for any club - heck, anyone on Twitter - whose handle exactly matches their username. 10

Header photo: A new approach here, but a successful one. It’s useful to know when the next game is. 8

Bonuses and deductions: A quick scroll down the page reveals that they use that same orange filter for nearly every picture they tweet, giving the feed the feel of an Irn Bru fever dream. This is a bad thing. ‘Orange’ and ‘Irn Bru’ both have six letters, so that seems a scientifically appropriate number of points to deduct.

Handle: This is fine, but given that @LeicesterCity is just an automated stream of headlines, it feels like second best. 7

Bio: Interesting that the hashtag is in lower case while the handle is in upper case. Where’s the internal consistency, Leicester? wHEre, i ASk yOU? 4

Header photo: Yeah, fair enough. I’d dine out on that for a while longer too. 10

Bonuses and deductions: The account only follows 61 people. The Premier League champions don’t need to please mere mortals. 61 bonus points.

Handle: The scamps at the Liverpool Echo nabbed @Liverpool early doors, but this is the next best option. 7

Bio: A tiny bit boastful, perhaps, but if you’ve got it, flaunt it. No annoying administrative clutter, either. 8

Bonuses and deductions: At time of writing, Liverpool follow 390,809 people on Twitter. That’s more people than I knew had Twitter accounts. Their Tweetdeck feed must move like Usain Bolt. I don’t know if I’m appalled or impressed. No bonuses or deductions until I come to a conclusion.

Bio: Not their ‘Twitter account’ or their ‘Twitter feed’, just their Twitter, which seems grammatically odd. Then the obligatory help and synergy. 6

Header photo: All generic celebration photos are equal, but some generic celebration photos are more equal than others. This isn’t a great one. 4

Bonuses and deductions: That Snapchat link takes you to a page that says their Snapchat account can be found at ‘mcfcofficial’. But that’s the wrong username, as their own Twitter bio suggests. Five-point deduction.

Handle: Would @ManUnited have been better? That’s a rhetorical question; the answer is yes. 5

Bio: No frills, no needless information. Well done. 8

Header photo: This is the gold standard as far as header images go, with key players (and Wayne Rooney) on display and strong use of colour. Crucially, the picture appears to have been created exactly for this purpose. 10

Bonuses and deductions: That football emoji has to go. Two points off.

Handle: Unusual approach, going for the brevity of that nickname. A grower, but probably not the first thing you’d search for. 5

Bio: Middlesbrough are the only club to reference the Premier League in their bio. They’re clearly proud to be in the top flight. Cute. 8

Header photo: “We scored a goal and celebrated it!” 5

Bonuses and deductions: Nothing of note.

Handle: Same as the username (and, er, the name of the club). 10

Bio: Perhaps a bit busy. Southampton stuff, we get it. 5

Header photo: The Same Game campaign is aimed at providing greater opportunities for women and girls in the game. Good publicity for an excellent cause. 10

Bonuses and deductions: Their profile photo is of the logo on a club jersey, rather than a direct image of the badge itself. A nice idea, but why take it from such a weird angle? One point knocked off for misplaced artistic flair.

Bio: A lot going on, but if you are going to flood this section with plugs for your accounts elsewhere, this is how to do it. Much easier to click than to copy and paste. 6

Header photo: Joe Allen is cool, but it’s yet another celebration picture. 5

Bonuses and deductions: 10 extra points for uniformity of usernames across platforms.

Handle: I’ve really created a rod for my own back with the rule from earlier. Oh well. 10

Bio: Three hashtags! Steady on. A cursory search suggests that the #RedAndWhiteArmy thing is not exactly booming, either. 5

Header photo: From the ongoing photojournalism series: Woke up hungover at the Stadium of Light. Harrowing. 1

Bonuses and deductions: Honestly, just look at the header photo. Hilarious. I’m taking that point away again.

Handle: These aren’t just your everyday swans, paddling round and occasionally flying short distances. These are official swans, with government jobs and mortgages. Actually, Official Swans would be a decent band name. Where was I? Oh, a score. 4.25

Bio: Probably should have realised at the outset that these were all going to be largely the same. 6

Handle: San Antonio Spurs, you utter fiends. Another ‘official’ one. 5

Bio: OK, so you’re available in many different languages. Felicitations. But why is @SpursOfficial on that last when THAT’S WHERE WE ARE ALREADY? Think it through, people. 3

Header photo: All the kits, and what lovely kits they are. Good facial expressions, too, from Jan Vertonghen’s ‘I’m showering, get out’ look to Michel Vorm telling the story of Bambi using nothing but his eyes. 9

Bonuses and deductions: The branding across all the foreign-language accounts is identical, apart from @Spurs_ES, which appears to be an Erik Lamela fan site. Erik Lamela is great, so this is worth three extra points.

Handle: Their name. Yes. 10

Bio: Undoubtedly the most unique bio in the top flight here. “Up-to-the minute messages delivered informally.” Sorry, what? On reflection, that’s exactly what I want. And who isn’t keen for “loads of other good stuff”? Idiots, that’s who. “Keep in touch!” You know what, I will. Thanks Watford. I feel like I’ve made a new friend. 20

Bonuses and deductions: I’ve already given them 20 our of 10 in the bio category, so they probably have enough points.

Handle: They were two years too late to grab @WestBrom, but this is short and sweet enough. 7

Header photo: At least choose a celebration picture in which the players are in the centre or slightly to the right, so they’re not obscured by the profile picture on desktop. Some people. 3

Bonuses and deductions: No. I want to stop writing this now.

Handle: ‘Utd’ just doesn’t sit well with me. Meanwhile, @WestHam hasn’t even tweeted yet. 4

Bio: Slightly grammatically challenged. Three-times (-time?) FA Cup what? Or did you win both the FA Cup and 1965 European Cup Winners’ Cup three times? Don’t worry, I hate myself more than you ever could. 2

Header photo: I’m guessing this is just a rotating selection of photos of Dimitri Payet over time, which is fine by me. 7

Bonuses and deductions: The only club to include an emoji representing their nickname/badge in their bio. Quite cool. Plus five.

Leicester win and I’m going to sit in a dark room for six hours to think about why I wrote this.
