SAINTS: Same Game special

Show/hide article…

The latest issue of SAINTS matchday magazine for the visit of Burnley focuses on Southampton’s women and girls’ Regional Talent Club and features an in-depth interview with Charlie Austin.

It’s now available to pre-order online, and you can find copies of all this season’s editions of SAINTS on our partner site: saintsmagazines.co.uk

Sunday’s magazine concentrates on the Same Game campaign as female football takes centre stage following the launch of Southampton’s Regional Talent Club earlier this year.

Interviews with Southampton FC’s Executive Football Director Les Reed, Girls’ Technical Director Lois Fidler, U16 Girls coach Mike Dixon, one of Southampton FC’s Performance Analysts Natasha Patel, and the FA’s Head of Women’s Elite Development, Brent Hills, guide us through the aspirations of the RTC.

Find out the club’s approach and its long-term aims to embed women’s football in Southampton and link it effectively to the work being done at Staplewood with the academy and first team.

Elsewhere in the magazine, there’s plenty of content to get your teeth into which concentrates on Sunday’s Premier League game against Burnley.

Former Clarets striker Charlie Austin discusses how his move to Southampton has changed his approach both on and off the pitch, as well as what he does to escape the pressures of playing football at the highest level.

Austin is also the focal point of our FREE poster which appears inside each issue of Premier League games this season.

Find out what to expect from the visitors with our look at the opposition, including tactical insight from Sam Tighe of Bleacher Report, who also focuses on the performance of Oriol Romeu in the team’s last game at Leicester City a fortnight ago.

Both captain José Fonte and first team manager Claude Puel also give their thoughts on Sunday’s game.

What’s more, you can find out the latest news from the academy and Saints Foundation, while there’s behind-the-scenes photos and our new fan feature titled ‘firsts’.

There are more outlets than ever from which to purchase this season’s matchday magazine which retails at £4.

You can pre-order editions, and take out a subscription for the season from saintsmagazines.co.uk

Van Dijk flourishing under Puel

Show/hide article…

Virgil van Dijk (£5.4m) arrived at Southampton last summer with a reputation as a goalscoring defender.

During his final full season with Celtic, the Dutchman was on target 10 times in all competitions before leaving for St Mary’s Stadium.

Van Dijk settled in seamlessly at the heart of the Saints’ rearguard last season.

Scoring three times in 34 appearances, he also served up 10 clean sheets to earn 133 Fantasy Premier League points.

The 25-year-old finished fifth for touches inside the penalty box (71) for defenders and produced 28 attempts on goal, the same number as Crystal Palace’s Scott Dann (£5.4m), for example.

With Claude Puel now at the helm at St Mary’s, Van Dijk has maintained his close-range threat.

Although he has not yet scored, his penalty-box touches (up from 2.1 a match in 2015/16 to 2.6) have improved, with his efforts inside the opposition area (0.6 a match) remaining the same.

To further highlight his attacking potential, Van Dijk is ranked second for defenders when it comes to successful headers (26). Only Chelsea’s Gary Cahill has registered more.

Southampton have also turned in some impressive performances at the other end of the pitch.

They have produced three successive clean sheets in the Premier League, with a total of six straight shutouts in all competitions.

It is fair to say Van Dijk has been instrumental to his side’s resilience and he will be confident on collecting another clean sheet on Sunday against a Burnley side who, with five goals this season, are the joint-lowest scorers in the competition.

Remember the Gameweek 8 deadline is at 11.30am BST Saturday 15 October
