Southampton were held up for a half a day in Israel after their Europa League game on Thursday

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s players and staff did not arrive home from Israel until late on Friday night, after an unusual hold up on their way back to Bournemouth airport: the funeral of iconic Israeli politician Shimon Peres.

Claude Puel’s side drew 0-0 at Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday night, taking a crucial point in their campaign in Group K of the Europa League. Knowing that it would be a long journey back to Hampshire, Saints stayed in Be’er Sheva for an early morning recovery session on Friday. They then had a short flight back to Tel Aviv and were scheduled to fly from David Ben Gurion airport back to Bournemouth at 11am on Friday morning.

The problem for Southampton was Shimon Peres’ funeral, held at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem on Friday morning. It was attended by world leaders, including Prince Charles, Tony Blair, David Cameron and Barack Obama.

Flying them all out of Israel on the Friday afternoon was literally a military operation. President Obama was only on the ground in Israel for five hours before flying back on Air Force One, taking former US president Bill Clinton with him too.

While this happened, Southampton’s players and staff had to wait at the airport. Only when Obama and other dignitaries had gone could Saints fly back. They did not depart until 5pm local time, more than six hours later than planned. They did not land in Bournemouth until after 8pm on the Friday night, 24 hours after their match.

This meant that Puel could only put his players through the lightest of sessions on Saturday before taking his team to the King Power Stadium to face reigning champions Leicester City. Puel made seven changes to the side who drew in Israel and they had the better of a 0-0 draw.

Loan Watch: Victories for McCarthy and Gape

Show/hide article…

Simeon Jackson finished Franck Moussa’s knock down to give the Saddlers the lead, before Fred Onyedinma levelled the scores six minutes later.

But Moussa registered his first Walsall goal to seal the victory just after the interval and give Jon Whitney’s a third win of the campaign.

In the Championship, Sam Gallagher replaced Danny Graham on 55 minutes, but was unable to prevent a 1-0 defeat to Birmingham City at St Andrew’s.

A close encounter was settled when Stephen Gleeson swept home David Cotterill’s cut back just after the hour mark.

Dominic Gape was also in action for his loan club Wycombe Wanderers as he played the duration of their 1-0 home win over Exeter City.

The result meant a third successive home win for Gareth Ainsworth’s men after Gape netted his first senior goal in their 5-1 triumph over Crewe Alexandra in midweek.

Adebayo Akinfenwa was the match winner on this occasion as he took in Anthony Stewart’s cross before firing past Bobby Olejnik in the 85th minute.

Tadić: International break won’t affect us

Show/hide article…

A goalless draw with champions Leicester City helped to clock up a sixth game unbeaten and a sixth clean sheet.

And as Tadić prepares to go away with Serbia for qualifiers against Moldova and Austria, he insists it will not disrupt the momentum when they return ahead of the Premier League clash with Burnley.

Reflecting on the draw at Leicester, he said: “I felt we had the initiative, we probably dominated the game and deserved more.

“You always want a victory but when that’s not possible a point is ok. This is our philosophy.

“We need to look forward. We have the international break where we will try to play good for our teams and then we will come to prepare for the next games.

“The break doesn’t mean anything, because we all have important international games so that’s never a problem for us.”

Charlie Austin, José Fonte, Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand all returned to the side after being left out of the squad for the trip to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in a bid to keep the side refreshed.

Tadić replaced Jake Hesketh in the first half in Israel, but said he felt no effects from the midweek trip on Sunday.

He added: “It’s everything in the head. I think it is more of a phsycological thing. If you tell yourself you are not tired then you are not tired.

“We felt good, it was not an issue and we are professionals who need to prepare well for a game.

“We didn’t take three points but they are the champions of England so we also need to respect that.”

PHOTOS: Rickie Lambert is ‘blown away’ by Franny Benali’s latest challenge

Show/hide article…

RICKIE Lambert has admitted his is blown away by the scale of Francis Benali’s latest challenge.

The former Saints striker turned out to Cardiff City’s stadium to welcome the ex-Southampton defender at the end of the second stage of his second big race.

Benali is running a marathon a day and then cycling a further 75 miles to visit every Premier League and Championship stadium in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Lambert made a special trip down from Liverpool to greet the 47year-old and said “I was just delighted to be able to play a part in something so amazing.

“What Franny is doing is absolutely unbelieveable. I absolutely cannot get my head round it.

“I thought pre-season training was bad enough, but this is almost unthinkable and I absolutely don’t know how he is even thinking of this and I am full of admiration.

“I just hope people dig deep and give generously because it is a fantastic cause and an incredible feat and knowing Franny I am sure he will achieve it”

Benali was also greeted by the Cardiff Saints who turned out to welcome him at the end and the end of the 44 mile stage.

Benali said “It gave me a real lift to see Rickie and some Saints fans. Things like that make a real difference and help keep me going.

"My knee was quite sore and I have suffered a couple of blisters, but a welcome like this eases the pain.

“Cardiff City were really good to us and couldn’t have been more helpful. Rickie has also provided a signed Liverpool shirt that I can auction off to raise further funds for Cancer Research UK.”

After a brief rest it was back on the road for Benali as he headed for Swansea’s Liberty Stadium to be greeted by former Saints Jack Cork and Nathan Dyer.

Next up is the physically and mentally demanding trek across the Brecon Beacons to the midlands where he is due to reach Birmingham on Wednesday at 12.15pm.

Puel hails Romeu’s efforts

Show/hide article…

The Spaniard took plenty of plaudits following his impressive performance in the 0-0 draw at Leicester City, but Saints boss Puel was keen to point out that his strong displays have extended much further back.

“He doesn’t play well just in this game,” he said. “Since the beginning of the season we have seen good play from him for the defence.

“In every match, he can play a fantastic game, because his quality is that of an excellent player.

“He can recover the ball and that’s very important for us, because he gives a structure for the team.

“He’s very interesting with the ball and without the ball in front of the defence.

“He’s a very good character, a very good player, who works every time in the training sessions.

“I like this player, but I like all my players. They play with inspiration every time, they give their all and they listen also to develop their game, and this is important for the future.”
