Southampton star: My team-mates need to become tougher mentally

Show/hide article…

Saints fought out a 0-0 draw with champions Leicester on Sunday hours after returning from a gruelling 4,600-mile round trip to Israel in the Europa League.

But Tadic reckons they will only be able to compete on both fronts if they sort out the mental side of their game.

Tadic said: “Everything is in the head. You feel in your head that you are tired – but you are not tired.

Premier League players who could be free agents in summer 2017

With seven games played, Premier League managers will now have a clear idea of the strengths and weaknesses of their squads - and may already be considering how they can improve in the January transfer window.

Perhaps they could land a big-name player on the cheap?

A number of the Premier League’s top players are in the final year of their contracts, meaning they could be available at a reduced rate in the next window - or agree a free transfer for the summer of 2017.

Manchester City, in particular, have a number of players nearing the end of their deals.

Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Yaya Toure, Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna are all in the final months of their contracts, according to transfermarkt.co.uk

Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker, Chelsea’s Jon Obi Mikel, John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic, and Manchester United trio Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Antonio Valencia and Michael Carrick are all in a similar position.

Here’s a list of some of the Premier League players whose contracts run out next summer:

Hesketh prepares to bounce back

Show/hide article…

JAKE Hesketh will have the chance to put his difficult Europa League experience in Israel behind him tonight as Saints Under-23s head for the comparatively calmer environment of Colchester United in the Checkatrade Trophy.

The slightly built academy graduate was given another chance to shine after his excellent showing against Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup third-round, with Claude Puel selecting the 20-year-old for the Group K game at Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

However, in the daunting and hostile setting of the Turner Stadium in south Israel, Hesketh, perhaps understandably, struggled to adapt, and was subsequently withdrawn before half-time for Dusan Tadic as Puel looked to protect one of the academy’s rising stars.

But, tonight, the attacking midfielder will be back in a familiar environment alongside his Saints academy colleagues for their second Checkatrade Trophy fixture at League Two outfit Colchester.

The Hampshire lad, who grew up in Fareham, will be eager to get back in the saddle and prove to St Mary’s chief Puel that he is able to cope against physical opposition.

During his 35-minute outing against Be’er Sheva he faced tough opponents and found it difficult to have any impact, especially against the Israeli outfit’s enormous central midfielder John Ogu.

Puel stated after the goalless draw that he had confidence in Hesketh to bounce back from his early substitution.

Now, The U’s test in their second Southern Group E clash is the perfect opportunity to perform, not just for Hesketh, but for all the academy players.

Harrison Reed revealed recently that Puel regularly talks to the club’s youngsters and is keeping tabs on their development, so will be keeping a keen eye on their progress in the revamped Checkatrade Trophy, which has allowed academy teams into as a trial for this season.

It will also be another chance for all Martin Hunter’s youngsters to experience the physicality of playing Football League opposition.

Colchester, who are currently in 11th place in League Two, lost their opening group match 1-0 to fourth tier rivals Crawley Town.

Saints started their campaign in the competition with a 0-0 draw at Charlton Athletic, in which they missed out on a bonus point in a penalty shootout defeat. Each tie that is level at full time goes to spot kicks.

Alex McCarthy, the back-up goalkeeper, may be in line to play in the tournament.

Romeu hails “clever” Puel

Show/hide article…

ORIOL Romeu believes that Saints’s recent success owes much to Claude Puel’s “clever” rotation policy and squad management.

Puel has led Saints on a six-game unbeaten run in all competitions and has tinkered with his team continually to ensure that he has a fresh eleven throughout the gruelling run.

The St Mary’s chief has actually used 22 players this season so far, a number which demonstrates that he is pushing the capacity of his squad to its maximum.

Defensive midfielder Romeu has been one of the few to have played almost every game, only being rested for the League Cup tie against Crystal Palace.

“I think that we are doing well because the coach is being clever,” he said. “We make five or six changes from the last game and that’s what we have to do this year because we are in more competitions.

“So far we are proving we have a large enough squad with the quality to do these kind of rotations, so we are going to stick to it.”

“He works tactically a lot and that comes out with those clean-sheets that we just got in the last five or six games,” he added.

The Spaniard has worked under some big name bosses during his career and highly rates his current manager.

Romeu has played under now Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola while at Barcelona as well as Andre Villas Boas and Rafael Benitez at Chelsea.

“He’s very good,” the 25-year-old said about Puel. “I’ve been lucky to have had very good managers and have learned a lot from them, but with Claude we are still learning, we are still improving but so far it is very good.

“We like to play this style. We like to have the ball. We like the team managing the game and willing to be clever with the ball.”

While Romeu has played a lot during the punishing run of six games in little more than two weeks, he has the opportunity now to rest during the international break.

He says he’s lucky to have that opportunity that many other Saints stars won’t get.

He said: “The legs are feeling a bit tired, but I need to recover well and I’m lucky that I’m staying here and I can rest now for a few days.

“I’ll be getting ready and fit for the next game.”

He continued: “I was talking to Maya (Yoshida) and I said it’s a bit difficult because for some players it’s rest, recovery and training, but for them (on international duty) they have to travel eight or nine hours and then come back with jet lag.

“It’s kind of hard, but we still need to be ready for the next games.”

Tottenham’s Son Heung-Min tops ’ Power Rankings

Show/hide article…

Son set up Dele Alli’s second goal in Spurs’ 2-0 win over Manchester City at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

The 24-year-old has scored four league goals in as many games this season and registered two assists, stepping in for the injured Harry Kane and helping lift Spurs to second in the league - just one point behind City.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez held his No 2 spot in the Power Rankings this week, with team-mate Laurent Koscielny rising eight places to No 3 after grabbing a controversial winner at Burnley, assisted by Theo Walcott (No 7, up three places).

Four Liverpool players packed the top 10 for a second week running, including James Milner (No 4, up four places), Philippe Coutinho (No 5, up two places), Sadio Mane (No 8, down two places), and Jordan Henderson (No 10, up five places).

Milner ensured Liverpool’s fourth successive league victory from the penalty spot during a 2-1 win at Swansea on Saturday - his fourth penalty conversion this season.

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (No 6, up six places) opened the scoring against Crystal Palace at Goodison Park, before Belgium team-mate Christian Benteke (No 12, up one place) equalised with a deft header.

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne dropped out of the top 10 after topping the chart for two consecutive weeks, having missed City’s defeat to Spurs through injury.

The Power Rankings methodology reflects a player’s performance by awarding points to players for 32 different matchday stats.

Below, we present this week’s Power Rankings and your club’s top points scorer. The Sky Sports Power Rankings will be updated every Tuesday during the season, so be sure to keep an eye on the big movers…

Stephens called into England Under-21 squad

Show/hide article…

Saints defender Jack Stephens has been named in the England Under-21 squad to face Kazakhstan and Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Stephens joins Nathan Redmond, Matt Targett and James Ward-Prowse in Aidy Boothroyd’s 22-man selection.

Under-20s manager Boothroyd will take temporary charge after the interim appointment of Gareth Southgate to the senior team.

They travel to Aktobe to face Kazakhstan on Thursday 6th October (4pm BST), before hosting Bosnia & Herzegovina on Tuesday 11th October (3pm BST) at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium.

The Three Lions head into the qualifiers knowing a result from either of the two fixtures will secure their spot at the European Championship finals in Poland.

Matt Targett has been ruled out of the away trip to Kazakhstan and will receive treatment at the club, but remains in contention for the fixture against Bosnia.

Big matches will test Van Dijk’s defensive form

Show/hide article…

The Bonus Points

Defences occupied nine of the top 10 places in the Fantasy Premier League Bonus Point System (BPS) in Sunday’s goalless draw at the King Power Stadium.

Virgil van Dijk (£5.4m) was awarded the maximum bonus after steering Southampton to a sixth successive shut-out across all competitions.

The Dutchman registered a score of 33 BPS thanks to a commanding display. He produced nine clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) and as many recoveries, in addition to completing 85% of his 85 passes.

Van Dijk’s central defensive partner Jose Fonte (£5.4m) and Foxes stopper Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) both received two additional points, courtesy of 31 in the BPS.

Fonte registered three successful tackles, seven recoveries and four CBI and completed 87% of 88 passes.

Schmeichel made five saves, helping the home side to a third clean sheet in four Premier League fixtures in front of their own fans.

The ICT Index

The visitors claimed the top three spots in the ICT Index.

Steven Davis (£5.3m) registered the best of a modest set of scores having been awarded 8.0. The busy midfielder fired in two shots - both from inside the penalty box - and also produced a couple of key passes.

Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg (£4.4m) also created two scoring opportunities, supplementing this with a pair of completed crosses and a shot on target.

Charlie Austin (£6.3m) was ranked first for ICT Threat with a score of 54.

The Saints striker managed four attempts from inside the box, producing two efforts on target.

The Scout Notes

Leicester City have now conceded only once at the King Power this season and host Crystal Palace, West Bromwich Albion and Middlesbrough in their next three home encounters.

Trips to Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the upcoming three Gameweeks may deter initial investment, though, with Claudio Ranieri’s men conceding on 10 occasions on their travels already - more than any other side.

Although the Foxes defence continues to impress in front of their own fans, Riyad Mahrez (£9.2m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.8m) once again failed to earn points.

Mahrez now has one assist in six outings and Vardy has two goals in the first seven Gameweeks. Over 14,000 FPL managers have sold Vardy since last Friday’s deadline, with 11,000+ parting company with the Algerian.

Southampton have earned three successive Premier League shut-outs, though their resilience will be put to the test with clashes against Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea in the next five Gameweeks.

The display of Austin - who netted five times in his previous four in all competitions - will encourage the 34,000+ FPL managers who drafted him in last week.

Only Zlatan Ibrahimovic (£11.5m) managed more close-range attempts up front in Gameweek 7, by five shots inside the box to four.
