Bertrand relishing freedom under Puel

Show/hide article…

Ryan Bertrand’s run and assist for Charlie Austin’s goal in their 3-0 win at West Ham United last Sunday not only put Southampton on course for a fourth straight win.

It typified the attacking freedom the left-back is relishing under the guidance of Claude Puel, who next takes his team to Leicester City on Sunday.

Puel arrived at St Mary’s Stadium this summer and, after a slow start, led Saints to a four-match winning streak across all competitions until their 0-0 draw with .

After missing pre-season through injury Bertrand is playing catch-up in terms of fitness and getting used to the new manager’s tactics.

“The boys have been learning, listening and trying to implement the new tactics,” Bertrand said at the launch of EA SPORTS FIFA 17. “The tactics are slightly different.”

Part of that change is enjoying the chance to go forward more under Puel, once Bertrand’s fitness allows.

“It was a tough start for me this season,” Bertrand said. "But since I’ve been back I’ve taken it game by game and hopefully I can keep on improving on the fitness so I can enjoy attacking a lot more.”

A new element to FIFA 17 is The Journey, where gamers get the chance to guide the development of a Premier League prospect, Alex Hunter, to help him reach the top.

Bertrand had a long journey on his way to becoming left-back at Southampton and England, with various loans from Chelsea before he made St Mary’s his home in 2014/15.

Southampton have excelled in producing first-team players from their academy in recent years and Bertrand puts it down to the philosophy at the club.

"They know who they are as a club,” he said. "They want success and want to do it the right way. They never steer too far away from their principles and they’re managing to get the balance correct.

“They’re still managing to develop young players and get success, so they’ve got a formula somewhere and lots of people want it.”

Leicester 0-0 Southampton: Match Report

Show/hide article…

As much as a battle for Premier League supremacy this felt like an audition for the watching England manager.

Gareth Southgate spent his final hours before naming his first squad at the King Power Stadium and by the end was blessed with having seen in action no fewer than 10 players eligible to wear three lions.

Such a figure in a single game has long been a rare sight in the English top-flight but while Southgate would be troubled by that situation he could find cause for optimism here.

Claudio Ranieri is likely to have a different perspective as his side again struggled to reproduce their form of last season or the Champions League, although he can be content that their long unbeaten run at home in the Premier League is extended.

The match ended goalless to leave both sides frustrated and stationary in midtable. Southampton can be more pleased with the point having only returned from Europa League exertions 48 hours ago.

Southgate had plenty of reason to be in attendance. As well as Jamie Vardy and Danny Drinkwater, Southgate could cast his eye over Marc Albrighton and Danny Simpson, whose case for a call-up had been strengthened due to Nathaniel Clyne’s unavailability through injury.

For the visitors there was Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand at the back, and Nathan Redmond and Charlie Austin forming a potent-looking attack. In what can be considered an unorthodox approach from Claude Puel, Austin was operating on the left side with Redmond up front.

That meant Wes Morgan and Robert Huth had Redmond’s pace to contend with and the threat of Austin coming onto crosses at the far post, as happened in the ninth minute.

Right-back Cedric cut onto his left to curl a cross into the box and Austin met the ball well but Kasper Schmeichel was able to catch easily. Soon after there was a carbon-copy chance but Austin failed to get enough contact and the ball went wide.

Simpson was alert to block another Austin chance 12 yards out but in the 15th minute Leicester had the post to thank for the scores staying at nil.

Steven Davis found space midway into the hosts’ half and spotted Austin pealing off into the right channel of the area. Davis produced a chip worthy of the Ryder Cup and Austin, who had shrugged off the attentions of Christian Fuchs, took little notice of the impossible angle to let fly first time. Schmeichel was beaten but the far upright came to Leicester’s rescue.

It summed up a disjointed opening from the champions, who were unable to find the zip displayed during their victory over Porto here on Tuesday. Southampton looked fresher despite having had 48 hours less rest since their last game and only arriving back from Israel on Friday night.

Leicester’s way into the game came courtesy of a mistake that owed nothing to fatigue and everything to misjudgement.

Just before the half hour Virgil Van Dijk badly underhit a backpass, which is never a good idea with Vardy around. The England striker pounced onto the ball and into the box, rounding Fraser Forster but being foiled by Oriol Romeu.

The Southampton midfielder was not done there, somehow getting his body in the way of Islam Slimani’s follow up while still grounded and then diverting Vardy’s volley as he rose to his feet. Romeu pumped his fists in the manner we have seen with each big putt sunk at Hazeltine.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Southampton controlling possession and placing Leicester under considerable pressure.

In the 62nd minute a neat interchange between Davis and Emile Hojbjerg saw Redmond released but his finish was somewhat scuffed and Schmeichel got down to stop.

The Leicester goalkeeper did even better soon after. Van Dijk was able to advance from defence to feed Austin, who made an average pass better by outmaneuvering Huth and outmuscling Fuchs. He was clear but erred by trying to lob Schmeichel, who reached a huge paw up to save and gather at the second attempt.

Amid an anxious stadium, the moment seemed to stir Leicester into action, firstly with an English trio crafting a good chance. Vardy passed to Albrighton, whose first-time lofted hit reached Drinkwater running ahead down the left. He beat Romeu but cut his shot into the side-netting.

It was a reminder of the understanding Drinkwater has with Vardy and as such Southgate could be minded to start both when England face Malta on Saturday.

Three minutes later Drinkwater made a much more telling connection, hitting the ball with venom from range following a corner but straight down the throat of Forster.

Searching for victory, Claudio Ranieri somewhat surprisingly took off Vardy for Shinji Okazaki, and sent on Demarai Gray for Albrighton.

Almost immediately Leicester nearly broke the deadlock twice in quick succession. First Slimani nodded on Fuchs’ long-throw only to find Forster still razor sharp, then as the ball was recycled a backpeddling Okazaki met Gray’s cross with a glancing header that drifted just wide of Southampton’s far post.

Claude Puel made a couple of substitutions of his own and Southampton reminded of their attacking punch with six minutes left. Cuco Martina took a throw Leicester believed was theirs to find Shane Long, whose cut-back reached James Ward-Prowse. But just on, the English midfielder hit his finish over the bar.

Leicester could have won it with the final kick in their finest move of the game. Drinkwater slipped the ball to Leonardo Ulloa but the Argentine ballooned his finish over.

The final whistle brought much to mull on for both sides, and likewise the England manager searching to make an impression.

5 things we learned from Leicester City 0-0 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Leicester 's Champions League heroics appear to be taking a toll after Southampton enjoyed the better of this stalemate.

The Foxes dug deep to beat Porto 1-0 at home in Europe to stand top of their group after successive wins and Claudio Ranieri’s men never got into top gear against Southampton.

Saints boss Claude Puel rested his key men for their Europa League tie in Israel but they returned here for the impressive visitors.

Striker Charlie Austin hit the post and also saw a lob saved by Kasper Schmeichel as the reigning champions kept their unbeaten home league record dating back over a year.

Here are five things we learned…

Saints made seven changes in their 0-0 draw against Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday for the game and journey of 4,000 miles.

Manager Claude Puel rotated and spared key players including captain and Jose Fonte and in-form striker Charlie Austin.

Those changes looked shrewd here at Leicester where the visitors enjoyed the best of the contest and forced Kasper Schmeichel into several saves.

Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri promised in the build up that he wouldn’t be afraid to rest star striker Jamie Vardy if necessary.

The forward had a hectic 2015/2016 with 24 goals before going to Euro 2016 with England.

Against Southampton he failed to add to his two goals this season and was subbed on 66 minutes.

In the first half he might have scored when clean through but took a poor touch enabling Oriol Romeu to block.

The Southampton assistant first team manager was on the bench despite being named recently in corruption allegations.

The Scot was filmed advising how to pay lower league staff to get players for a fictitious player agency but despite the furore he has not been suspended and he got on with his job here – though he rarely appeared from the bench and was perhaps keeping his head down.

The caretaker England boss was in the stands at The King Power Stadium ahead of naming his first squad later since Sam Allardyce’s sacking.

There was plenty of English talent on show with Jamie Vardy, Danny Drinkwater, Marc Albrighton, Fraser Forster, Charlie Austin and Nathan Redmond all starting.

Austin and Redmond both impressed early on. Southgate is a known admirer of Redmond’s anyway from his display for the England U21s.

After bringing both Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman to the Premier League, the Saints hierarchy clearly know a good manager when they see one.

Perhaps Frenchman Claude Puel, 55, will eventually fall into the same bracket after his impressive start to life in England.

The former Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Nice boss endured a slow start to his reign here with two draws and defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal in his first four games.

But he is now unbeaten in six games including also doing well in Europe.

Several good saves to keep a clean sheet

Troubled in air when Austin peeled off to far post

Had a second half header well saved by Fraser Forster

His long throws caused panic in the visitors’ defence

Booked. Saving his best displays for the Champions League

Was overrun in midfield as Saints dominated possession

Subbed after quiet display on the flank

Poor first touch when clean through. Looked leggy and subbed

No repeat of his recent heroics as goals dried up

The shot-stopper was rarely tested on quiet afternoon

Hobbled off injured in the first half

The Portuguese stopper was typically classy at the back

Lucky that his poor backpass didn’t lead to goal

Got forward well down the left flank

His decision to cross rather than shoot saw him promptly subbed

Trademark busy display in the middle of park

Made heroic triple block to deny Vardy twice and Slimani

The attacking ace was good on the ball but could have finished better

Leicester 0-0 Southampton: Champions held as visitors dictate

Show/hide article…

Leicester’s stuttering defence of their Premier League title goes on after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Southampton.

The visitors had the best chances at the King Power Stadium and dictated play at times, with Charlie Austin hitting the post in the first half.

Indeed, Claude Puel’s men will have been frustrated at not taking all three points from a lively affair in which they played the more purposeful football.

Southampton draw level on points with West Brom, while Leicester move up one place above Bournemouth to 12th but have now won only two of their opening seven league games.

The away side started with intent and applied good pressure from the off, with Austin, in particular, a commanding presence in attack.

With caretaker England manager Gareth Southgate in the stands ahead of his first squad announcement, Austin presented a good case for inclusion after five goals in four games.

A long ball over the top of defence released him and he shot from a wide angle on the right, seeing his attempt come back off the woodwork with Kasper Schmeichel beaten.

Along with Austin, Cedric Soares was an integral part of Southampton’s good forward play in the early stages but the Portugal defender had to go off with an ankle injury.

His collision with Marc Albrighton brought his match to an end early and with that came a dip in pace from the visitors.

Leicester almost exploited it as a short passback from Virgil van Dijk let in Jamie Vardy and he homed in on goal.

His England team-mate Fraser Forster stood up well, however, delaying the forward enough for Southampton to get men back and block.

Islam Slimani was then denied on the follow up, with Vardy also stopped once more - and he will have rued his lack of conviction because he should have put the hosts ahead.

The first half was entertaining without having many clear cut chances and Slimani’s biggest contribution was his combative approach in attack.

He felt he should have had a penalty when he and Jose Fonte came together in the box but his claims were swiftly dismissed.

As the break approached, Southampton came forward again and Dusan Tadic nearly curled in but his cross was too deep and it dropped just over the bar.

The Serbian should have done better after the restart as Puel’s side dictated for a spell but he wasted an opportunity after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s through ball.

Instead of shooting himself, he tried to pick out Austin and it was the wrong choice, as was Austin’s own decision to try to chip Schmeichel moments later as he closed the attacker down and saved.

Play opened up and the teams traded shots which were all comfortably held, Danny Drinkwater on target but failing to score for Leicester and Hojbjerg doing the same for Southampton.

Leicester looked most likely to score towards the end, first through Shinji Okazaki’s glancing header which dropped just wide of the far post.

Leonardo Ulloa also had a glorious chance to win it seconds from the end after a flowing move orchestrated by Riyad Mahrez but he blazed over the bar.

Southampton deny champions Leicester but rue missed chances

Show/hide article…

Life is different for Leicester City this season. The party is over and their physical and emotional energy is being poured into their Champions League campaign. The Premier League routine does not have the same feel here, not now that they have conquered it and moved on to other things.

Leicester’s rivals see them differently too, they know their tricks and are determined not to fall for them. Their secrets are out and no-one wants to get duped again, not in the same way they did last year. You cannot make history and still go under the radar.

That is why Leicester are finding it harder this year. Why they have now only won two of their seven league games so far, leaving them 12th in the table, ahead of Bournemouth thanks to less negative goal difference. And why they could only draw this game 0-0 with Southampton, barely creating a good goalscoring chance.

In games like this last year, Leicester would sit back, wait, then rip through their opponents on the counter. This season visitors to the King Power are savvier, as Claude Puel’s Southampton were here. Leicester had less space against a well-organised Saints team, and did not have many ideas about what to do with it.

The only moment when Leicester looked like scoring all afternoon was from one Saints mistake. Virgil van Dijk, otherwise impeccable, underhit a pass back to Fraser Forster. Jamie Vardy ran onto it, but Oriol Romeu recovered to tackle. Leaping back up, Romeu blocked Vardy’s follow-up shot and then another from Islam Slimani on the rebound.

It took a double change in the second half, with Demarai Gray and Shinji Okazaki thrown on, for Leicester have any extra spark. Slimani had a header tipped onto the post by Forster, before Okazaki headed wide of the far post from a Gray cross. Beyond that there was very little creativity, not much energy or even purpose. The only good passing move Leicester put together all game ended with Leonardo Ulloa shooting tamely over the bar. And that was the last move of the match.

Southampton were the better team, and were even more impressive for having drawn 0-0 at Hapoel Beer Sheva in Israel on Thursday night. They were solid, that one slip from Van Dijk aside, and showed more quality and ideas on the ball than Leicester ever did. It will be difficult to combine domestic and European commitments this season, but here they showed that there should be no sense of alarm.

Claude Puel came here with a clever plan, using Nathan Redmond as his centre forward, with Charlie Austin hanging wide on the left of the front three. Austin was dangerous with his elusive movement and had Saints’ only two real first-half chances. First, a header in the box from Cedric Soares’ cross, that he could not direct away from Kasper Schmeichel. Then, a brilliant volley from Steven Davis’ chipped pass, which beat Schmeichel, but not the inside of the far post.

Saints knew that they did not have much to fear even here, at the home of the champions, and their confidence grew the more they saw of their insipid hosts. Into the second half Saints were dominating possession for long spells, cleverly orchestrated by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, with Romeu sat behind him to impose order if Leicester broke through. They found it easier than expected to create chances and should have scored a goal to win the game.

Redmond showed why Puel had moved him inside, wriggling his way between Huth and Morgan, but unable to beat Schmeichel down at his near post. Then Redmond slid a pass to Austin, through on goal, but when Schmeichel darted out of goal, Austin’s chip did not have enough lift on it. Schmeichel could pluck it out of the sky.

One good last chance fell to James Ward-Prowse, shooting over from the edge of the box, sending Puel reeling in frustration. Southampton had nothing to fear here against Leicester and should have won it. Puel clearly knew it.

Southampton hold firm at Leicester

Show/hide article…

Southampton earned a sixth successive clean sheet in all competitions as they drew at Leicester City.

The visiting side started strongly, with Charlie Austin hitting a post with a volley from an acute angle.

Oriol Romeu made three blocks to deny Leicester after Virgil van Dijk’s underhit backpass had allowed Jamie Vardy in on goal.

A tightly contested encounter continued in this vein after the break, with Austin spurning a great chance when his chip was saved by Kasper Schmeichel.

Danny Drinkwater tested Fraser Forster with a powerful strike and Leicester’s Robert Huth hit the crossbar as the champions, unbeaten at home this season, pushed for a winner.

Leicester City 0-0 Southampton: Foxes suffer Champions League hangover in stalemate

Show/hide article…

Champions Leicester City endured a frustrating afternoon as they drew 0-0 against Southampton at the King Power Stadium.

Both sides competed in European competition midweek but it was the Saints who dominated on Sunday afternoon. Returning from a trip to Israel on Thursday night, Claude Puel’s side showed plenty of energy and attacking intent against a Leicester side who last tasted defeat at home over a year ago.

After a quiet opening, it was the Saints who eventually made the first impression on the quarter hour.

A nice passing move by the visitors allowed Cedric Soares to charge down the right before cutting the ball back for Charlie Austin. The striker could not connect with his first attempt but was teed up by Dusan Tadic moments later, steering his header just wide.

Claude Puel’s men went even closer minutes later as Austin once again went threatened. Making the most of confusion between Danny Drinkwater and Jamie Vardy, Austin smashed an effort from distance to rattle the post. The watching England interim manager Gareth Southgate will have been impressed from what he was seeing.

Following a break in play due to Soares’ injury, the champions came to life to provide their first threat on goal. Virgil van Dijk’s casual back pass encouraged Vardy to chase before being forced to go across goal by Craig Forster in goal. Vardy’s effort was blocked before Islam Slimani was also denied in what was a major let off for the away side.

Leicester were adamant they should have been given a penalty before the interval after Slimani was barged down in the box by Jose Fonte. But referee Martin Atkinson waved away the pleas to leave the Algerian furious.

Southampton passed up a big opportunity to open the scoring after the interval. Cuco Martina’s cross was only partially cleared by Wes Morgan before Steven Davis saw his shot deflected over for a corner. However, the Northern Ireland international could have earned his side a penalty after resisting the temptation to go down in the box.

The Saints were dominating and let another chance in front of goal go to waste. Davis fed the overlapping Ryan Bertrand who released Nathan Redmond, but the forward failed to generate enough power to trouble Kasper Schmeichel in goal.

After enduring a frustrating afternoon in front of goal, Charlie Austin was replaced by James Ward-Prowse in the closing stages. Substitute Shane Long’s quick thinking gave Ward-Prowse the chance to snatch all three points, but he lifted his shot over the bar as the last chance went begging.

The result sees Leicester City fall eight points behind league leaders Manchester City while Southampton sit in tenth place following the draw.

Leicester City 0-0 Southampton: Saints fight for a point

Show/hide article…

Saints held Premier League champions Leicester to a battling goalless draw as they rounded off a good week with a hard earned point.

The hosts needed the frame of the goal to claim a point after Charlie Austin hit a post and missed a second-half chance in front of England caretaker boss Gareth Southgate.

Robert Huth also hit the woodwork for the Foxes but the sluggish hosts again struggled to recapture their Champions League form as they try to balance their European and domestic campaigns.

The Foxes have won just two of their opening seven league games of their title defence as they search to recapture the magic which took them to the top last season.

Southampton were good value for their point but boss Claude Puel will rue their missed chances as they created the better openings with Austin, aiming to earn a call-up to Southgate’s first squad for games against Malta and Slovenia, at the heart of much of it.

The striker, who had scored five goals in his previous four games, had three chances early on as he headed straight at Kasper Schmeichel and flashed another wide before going closer after 15 minutes.

Steven Davis’ deep pass picked up the striker’s run and he left Wes Morgan trailing and, despite the ever-tightening angle, his half volley flashed across Schmeichel to smack the far post.

The Saints, who had reverted to the team which beat West Ham 3-0 last week following Thursday’s goalless Europa League draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva, were both compact and expressive as Nathan Redmond and Austin posed problems.

The champions lacked spark but were almost gifted an opener after half an hour by Virgil Van Dijk.

Jamie Vardy seized onto the defender’s under-hit backpass and raced through with just Fraser Forster to beat but as he tried to round the goalkeeper Oriol Romeu raced back to tackle.

The ball broke for Islam Slimani but his shot was blocked by Romeu, who completed the clean up when he deflected Vardy’s follow-up effort wide.

It lifted a flat King Power Stadium but the Foxes missed top gear against their organised visitors, although Danny Drinkwater’s tenacity ensured the Saints failed to take complete control.

Davis shot over but an even game began to drift with Leicester and Southampton both feeling the effects of their European efforts in mid-week.

Schmeichel stopped Redmond with a low save before Austin wasted a glorious chance to win the game after 63 minutes.

Van Dijk’s run and fine pass picked the striker out and, despite being offside, the flag failed to come. He wrestled past Huth and was left with Schmeichel to beat but he opted to chip the on-rushing goalkeeper and never got enough height on his effort.

Drinkwater stung Forster’s palms with a rocket from 30 yards and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s low drive was easy for Schmeichel to collect but there was little sense a breakthrough would come.

Huth almost broke the deadlock when his 75th-minute header from Christian Fuchs’ throw hit a post and Shinji Okazaki, who had replaced the ineffective Vardy, narrowly nodded wide seconds later.

Substitute James Ward-Prowse then almost won it for Southampton with six minutes left but he fired over after Shane Long’s cross deflected into his path.
