Puel: We should have won

Show/hide article…

Saints earned a 0-0 draw against Leicester City, but had the chances to have been the first away team in more than a year to win at King Power Stadium.

Puel was pleased with his side’s display, as they made it a sixth game unbeaten, but admitted there was a tinge of regret at the result.

"We finished this game with a little disappointment, because we have the feeling that we could have won this game,” he said.

“We have made a very good game, with good qualities. It is difficult to play against this team, with their good organisation. They are strong in defence and the long ball is very difficult to defend, but my players produced a very good game, with many opportunities, and this is very interesting for the future.

“It’s positive for the confidence, but it’s a shame to finish with a draw, because I have the feeling that we have to win this game.”

Puel added: "I told my players, whenever you finish a game like this with disappointment and frustration I think it’s also a good feeling, because you can see the progress.

“We improve together and all the players in the squad make progress. It’s very interesting, but it’s important also when we play this game to take all the points.”

Leicester City 0-0 Southampton: Mixed feelings for Puel after “crazy” week

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel believes it shows just how far Saints have come that they were disappointed only to get a point against Premier League champions Leicester at the end of a “crazy” week.

Saints recovered impressively from their gruelling trip to Israel, which was made worse by a delay of several hours to their flight home on Friday, to fight out a goalless draw at the King Power Stadium.

Indeed, it was Saints who had the better chances to win the game with Charlie Austin unable to keep his hot form going.

Puel said: “I think it was a positive when we can see the travel and the journey of this Europa League, it was crazy. In this condition to have the ability to make this game is very interesting.

“Congratulations for all my players and all the squad because as a collective performance all the players of the squad participate with good qualities every time at the start of the team.

“We can change every time the players and keep the same level of intensity of the play and this is very interesting.

“For this moment I have the feeling perhaps we lost two points this afternoon and it’s difficult to see this.”

For Saints it is now six games without defeat, and six clean sheets in a row.

After a week which has included a hat-trick of away trips to West Ham, Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Leicester, Puel can be a satisfied man going into the international break.

“I think when you finish a game away against Leicester with a little disappointment it’s a good thing,” he smiled.

“This shows you can make a very good game I think and it’s always difficult against Leicester with their pressing, the duels, the long ball. It’s very important to keep a good concentration, but it was important for us to keep the ball on the ground and to play.

“I think we do a very good game with qualities and many chances and good actions.

“It’s a shame I think we don’t score on this game.

“Perhaps when you can take one goals or one mistake for example the first half, but I think on the ground you can see a good performance.”

‘I’m a very honest man, Southampton deserved to win’ – Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri admits his side got lucky

Show/hide article…

Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri admitted his side were fortunate not to lose against Southampton following their 0-0 draw at the King Power Stadium.

The Foxes were largely dominated by their opponents in Sunday afternoon’s Premier League clash and had wasteful finishing by the Saints to thank for securing a scarcely deserved point.

The Saints missed a number of chances in front of goal through Steven Davis, Nathan Redmond and in particular Charlie Austin, who proved to be the away side’s biggest threat, going closest with a thunderous effort in the first half that rattled the post.

And Ranieri knew his side were fortunate to come away with a result having failed to deal with Southampton’s greater energy during the match.

“We played good in the first half [but] we conceded a great chance to [Charlie] Austin when he hit the post. We created two or three chances, we covered the pitch very well and we knew they move the ball quickly.

“But in the second half, they played much better than us and created more chances than us. I’m very happy for the point and the clean sheet.”

The champions secured their second successive clean sheet in the space of five days, following up their 1-0 win against Porto in the Champions League with another shut-out against Claude Puel’s men.

Leicester last tasted defeat in a home Premier League fixture over a year ago and Ranieri was content to continue that record in the midst of last weekend’s 4-1 thrashing against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

“Of course, if you get a clean sheet your confidence grows and this is important. The point, the clean sheet – at the end of the match I am happy.”

Following last season’s heroics, Leicester have so far struggled to replicate their outstanding Premier League performances this season. The Foxes trail league leaders Manchester City by eight points heading into the international break in what has been a mixed start domestically.

But Ranieri, having seen his side take on the extra load of a Champions League campaign, is happy with how his team are shaping up.

“I was waiting for this kind of problem and for this reason I am very calm and concentrated on what we are doing and what we have to do.”

Højbjerg: We fought together

Show/hide article…

Saints had more control of the game and created more chances than the hosts, but could not find a route to goal.

And having had to settle for a valuable point on the road, that extends the good form further, Højbjerg insists everything is improving all the time.

He said: “Leicester are a good team and a point here is a very good result. We showed we are not only footballers, we are also fighters who stand together.

“That is what it’s all about. Everybody in the Southampton shirt stand together, fight together and get the points we want.

“It’s only getting better but we need to stay focused, ambitious and analyse our game and be specific on our details.”

Højbjerg’s Denmark international teammate Kasper Schmeichel made a number of saves to keep the Saints at bay, something that the midfielder spoke to him about at full-time.

He joked: “Kasper saved one or two times and I said to him after the game that he could have let one in but he didn’t agree!”

Claude Puel ‘angry’ with Charlie Austin miss in Southampton draw at Leicester

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel admits he was angry with Charlie Austin after he tried to chip Kasper Schmeichel as Southampton drew 0-0 with Leicester.

The striker had hit the post with a good effort early in the first half and looked a threat in front of watching caretaker England manager Gareth Southgate.

He should have done much better in the second, however, when he was put in on goal but opted to lift the ball over Schmeichel when he was already closing the forward down and leaving little space.

Had Austin scored, Southampton would have been on course for a win they would have deserved and his miss left Puel frustrated at taking a point instead.

Asked if he was angry at the former QPR player, Puel said: "Yeah, because he made a bad decision. The solution is it is easier on the ground to put the ball in. It’s a shame.

"I think we have made a very good game. It is very difficult to play against Leicester with big pressure and their pressing.

"It was important for us to put the ball on the ground and to play. I think we had many chances and opportunities.

"Leicester - sometimes off a mistake or a passback - also had them but I thought we could win this game at the end.

“We had many possibilities and it is a little disappointing to finish the game without a goal and without another result.”

Southampton reverted back to the team which defeated West Ham 3-0 last week after making seven changes while on Europa League duty in Israel on Thursday against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Nevertheless, having less time to prepare than their opponents - Leicester beat Porto 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday - meant a disjointed build-up.

Puel added: "We have been playing every three days but it is important to play well every time.

"This afternoon, for example, Leicester have had five days for recovery and for us it was just two but we saw a good game from my team.

"There were many, many situations with good action and good qualities. It was very interesting for the future.

"We showed we have the possibility good football away from home and against a team like Leicester, who have good organisation and are very strong in defence.

“It was important for us to see our possibilities and it was interesting but at the moment it is frustrating because we feel we could have won this game.”

Forster: We’ve kicked on

Show/hide article…

Forster made a superb reaction save to deny Robert Huth towards the end of the second-half to preserve a valuable point.

It meant a sixth clean sheet in a row for the England international, who was quick to praise his teammates.

He said: “It was always going to be a tough game as it’s a tough place to come, especially after the travelling we’ve done during the week.

“I think that the lads behind carried us through today, they were fantastic and had the legs to help the other lads.

“It could be a good point, as it’s always tough to play against the champions.”

Claude Puel’s side have now gone six games without tasting defeat, and Forster is pleased that Saints have showcased their abilities in recent weeks after a frustrating start to the campaign.

Forster added: “We’re delighted as it ‘s good to get that momentum and important we keep building on that.

“In the last six games we have really kicked on and we’ve shown our quality, with room for improvement as well.”

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri shoulders blame for Southampton stalemate

Show/hide article…

Claudio Ranieri 's men are flying in the Champions League but their Premier League title defence is definitely going to be slog.

Ranieri’s history boys top Group G in Europe after completing successive victories over Club Brugge and, most recently, Porto.

But their heroics have taken a toll as they finished a hectic run of seven games in 22 days with a lacklustre display against Southampton.

The Foxes have now won only two of their opening seven league games and have just eight points.

It is the joint-second lowest haul ever by a defending Premier League champion.

Last season when Chelsea had an identical return, the alarm bells were ringing at Stamford Bridge before Jose Mourinho was eventually axed in December.

While Ranieri may have dodged a bullet against Southampton, as Charlie Austin was firing blanks, there is little chance of a P45 heading the Italian’s way after his feat guiding 5,000-1 shots City to the title.

But Ranieri candidly admitted his champions were far from their best yesterday as Southampton boss Claude Puel’s decision to rest seven players in Europe looked shrewd.

City boss Ranieri admitted: “The other team was much better, we must recognise this.

“I’m very happy because I recognise Southampton played better than us and they deserved to win.

“We created some good chances but they created more than us. It’s ok: one point and a clean sheet when we play every three days.

“Maybe at the end of the 22 days, it was much better to give some rest to some players. They changed seven players, I changed just one. It’s not enough, but for this reason I am very happy.”

Leicester were so short of ideas, Ranieri brought on Shinji Okazaki for star man Jamie Vardy with 24 minutes left.

Ranieri added: “When I saw Jamie a little tired I put on Shinji. Shinji is an energetic player and he helped us between midfield and also he attacked space. He worked so hard.”

But even the Japanese international, who scored five crucial goals last term in the Premier League, failed to find the necessary breakthrough.

He tried with a clever back header which flew just wide. But it was Southampton who carried the greater threat throughout.

Dangerman Charlie Austin served notice of his intent to add to his recent five-goal haul with an early header.

Kasper Schmeichel tipped his low right-foot shot in the 14th minute on to the post from Steven Davis’ clever pass.

Southampton enjoyed the majority of the possession as Leicester were reduced to hitting them on the break.

Vardy sprinted clear on to Virgil van Dijk’s poor backpass but Oriol Romeu got back well to tackle.

Romeu then remarkably blocked follow up efforts from both Islam Slimani and Vardy himself.

After the interval Southampton continued to pose the greater threat as Schmeichel got down well to save from Nathan Redmond.

The visitors then really should have taken the lead in the 62nd minute when Austin went clear on goal.

But he tried to be too clever with a lofted finish which Schmeichel clawed away – to the frustration on Puel on the bench.

Danny Drinkwater later tested Saints keeper Fraser Forster with a fierce shot from outside of the area.

But a home win would have been an injustice on Southampton who were hugely frustrated at their failure to capitalise on a disappointing home display.

Ranieri added: “I’m pleased with all my players’ performance, not just Kasper.

“He made very good, important saves for us, to maintain the clean sheet.”

It ensured Leicester are now unbeaten in 19 Premier League home games since a defeat by Arsenal in September 2015 but that record would have gone if Saints’ finishing had been better.

Defensive record delights Puel

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel says Southampton’s run of six matches without conceding is down to the entire team and not just his defence.

Saints have not allowed a goal against them since suffering a 2-1 defeat away to Arsenal early last month, as they extended that run with a 0-0 draw away to defending Premier League champions Leicester City.

It is a record that Puel is delighted with, but one that he says is down to the side as a while.

"All this shows that we are strong in defence, but it is all the team with a good solidarity,” he said.

“But it’s important also to score, and we had many possibilities and chances. Ok, it’s positive and it’s very interesting, but it’s important to continue the work and to look for different wins for the future.”

While he would have liked a greater cutting edge, Puel was pleased with the way his team moved the ball against the Foxes.

"It’s important to improve this play on the ground and to see this against this team, because they are a great team, strong in defence and difficult to play against. It’s interesting for the future,” he said.

Leicester 0 Southampton 0: Foxes hang on to keep unbeaten home record

Show/hide article…

NOT QUITE: Charlie Austin fluffed his lines on multiple occasions against Leicester

Claudio Ranieri’s champions haven’t been beaten on their own patch in more than a year but Southampton striker Austin should have seen that off.

Five goals in his last four games has seen Austin’s St Mary’s career belatedly take off.

The former QPR man was one of a handful of players yesterday hoping to impress new England boss Gareth Southgate who was watching from the stands.

He was unlucky to see a first half effort bounce off the inside of a post but also missed a couple he knows he should have buried.

He’s been deadly of late but sent a close range header straight into Kasper Schmeichel’s chest and was then thwarted by the goalkeeper near the death.

He cheekily tried to chip him late on only to see the Dane stretch out a giant hand and pluck the ball out of the sky.
