Danny Drinkwater is not renowned for his goalscoring. But the England midfielder has had a couple of good efforts in quick succession. First he hit the side-netting after bursting through and then he struck a fine half-volley from distance. Leicester needed a bit of impetus and Drinkwater tried to do that.
Not to be outdone, Hojberg takes aim from long range down at the other end of the pitch, but his effort is also swallowed by the keeper. Still no goals in this one and time is starting to become a real factor.
Austin could have added to his impressive tally After praising Austin earlier, he will probably hope to have done better when he looked to lift the ball over Schmeichel. With the watching England manager Gareth Southgate in the stands, the Saints frontman knows this is a chance to impress. That was a great chance to make it six goals in five games.
Leicester are looking a little flat and need some added impetus. Ranieri has a number of option on the bench in Ulloa, Gray, Okazaki and Schlupp - with all offering something slightly different. Hopefully the manager formerly known as ‘the Tinkerman’ doesn’t wait too long to make a change.
Leicester have not caused Southampton too many problems today. Most of the Foxes’ openings came through sloppy passing from the Saints in their own half. Both teams will be hoping they can improve in the final third during the final half an hour.
Southampton have enjoyed the more possession in the first half but this game remains finely balanced. There have not been lots of chances but each side has had a huge opening each. Austin hit the post for the Saints while Romeu did brilliantly to block Vardy before he could score.
And that will do it for the first half from the King Power stadium, with no goals between Leicester and Southampton. It hasn’t been for a lack of trying though, with huge chances for both teams to break the deadlock. Surely it won’t stay this way for long in the second half. Stay tuned.
Romeu slips up for the first time in this game and it nearly cost his team dearly. His turnover just outside the area sets Vardy in motion, but the striker collides with Fonte inside the area, losing the ball and seeing his penalty appeals ignored.
