Krueger distances Saints from Eric Black after corruption allegations

Show/hide article…

SAINTS chairman Ralph Krueger has distanced the club from any wrong-doing over allegations made by a national newspaper about assistant manager Eric Black.

Krueger states that it is “personal issue” for Black and nothing to do with Saints after Claude Puel’s number two was named in an undercover sting by the Daily Telegraph as part of their ‘Football For Sale’ exposé.

It follows a club statement that said that Saints were fully committed to investigating the issue surrounding the 52-year-old.

“In regards to the situation with Eric, it’s a personal issue for him,” Krueger said. "It has nothing directly to do with us as a club.

"I don’t have enough information to make judgment on it. All I know is that Southampton Football Club is going to do everything possible to participate with The FA in finding ways to improve regulation as a result. “That’s all I can tell you.”

Black is the latest high profile figure named in the Daily Telegraph’s corruption in football exposes.

He joins a list including Sam Allardyce and Tommy Wright - both of whom have lost their jobs as a result - plus Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Leeds owner Massimo Cellino.

The FA is awaiting “full and unfettered disclosure of all available material from the Daily Telegraph” as the corruption allegations engulfing football which has now implicated Saints assistant manager Black.

Wright was yesterday sacked after claims made against him and the newspaper’s latest claims surround Black, who allegedly offered advice on how to bribe officials at other clubs.

He was filmed at a New Forest hotel apparently saying staff at other clubs could possibly be persuaded to give information about a player to a management company for money.

He has denied the allegations.

Saints defender a surprise inclusion in UEFA’s team of the week

Show/hide article…

CUCO Martina was a surprise inclusion in the Europa League’s Team of the Week.

The Saints defender was named in the best eleven by UEFA for his performance in the goalless draw at Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday evening.

Captain Virgil van Dijk and Fraser Forster were both very impressive in the 0-0 draw on a hostile night at Hapoel’s Turner Stadium, but it was Curacao international Martina who received recognition by Europe’s football governing body.

The 27-year-old played the whole match as a right-back and got forward well in spells.

The former FC Twente man got a number of crosses into the box, but was often left frustrated as most of his efforts were easily cleared by Hapoel, with no Saints attackers willing to try and get on the end of his deliveries.

Ranieri will not try and change Vardy’s pre-match routine

Show/hide article…

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri insists he is happy with Jamie Vardy’s pre-match port as long as he continues to leave teams punch drunk.

The striker admitted in his new autobiography he drank a glass of port out of a Lucozade bottle the night before every match last season out of superstition.

He ended the season with 24 goals after firing the Foxes to a shock Premier League win by 10 points.

Vardy has three goals in 10 games this term ahead of Sunday’s visit of Saints and Ranieri is relaxed about his personal preparation, which also includes three cans of Red Bull and two espressos on the day of a game.

He said: "He took it before Porto? Why didn’t he score!?

"A nutritionist gives them something to eat but after they go home they are professional and can eat and drink what they want.

"For me it’s important to watch on the pitch, when they play and train well I am happy.

"Sometimes the players do something just because ‘ah, I scored a goal and I want to continue’. It’s okay. It’s the doctor who has to investigate and say the port is good or not good.

“Jamie is doing a fantastic career, from non-league to national team. I don’t believe port can do something. It is a glass of red wine. It is okay. For me it is only superstition, nothing more.”

Meanwhile, Ranieri’s assistant Craig Shakespeare remains in talks with the Football Association over his role under caretaker England boss Gareth Southgate.

Shakespeare was part of Sam Allardyce’s backroom staff before Allardyce’s exit on Tuesday, just 67 days into the job, following a Daily Telegraph investigation into corruption.

He only joined the national set-up in August but Ranieri would be happy for him to continue under Southgate.

Ranieri added: "I know they are speaking and Craig is fantastic with us and the FA. He is free to choose so they are speaking and I am waiting.

“If he wants to continue I am happy, if he wants to stay with us I am happy.”

Danny Simpson is available after being dropped for Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win over Porto and Nampalys Mendy is fit after an ankle injury but Matty James is out with his own ankle problem.

Leicester vs Southampton: Team news

Show/hide article…

Ahead of this weekend’s Premier League action, Sportsmail will be providing you with all you need to know about every fixture, with team news, provisional squads, betting odds and Opta stats.

Here is all the information you need for Leicester’s’s home clash with Southampton.

Nampalys Mendy could return for Leicester against Southampton on Sunday after overcoming an ankle injury.

The midfielder, who joined from Nice in the summer, has been out for over a month but has returned to training and could replace Daniel Amartey.

Matty James is the Foxes’ only absentee as he battles his own ankle injury while Danny Simpson could return after being dropped for Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win over Porto.

Southampton manager Claude Puel will again select a full-strength team for Sunday’s Premier League fixture at Leicester.

The Frenchman rested captain Jose Fonte, top goalscorer Charlie Austin, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis from Thursday’s 0-0 Europa League draw at Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

Jake Hesketh was then substituted in the 35th minute through Puel’s concerns the game was too physical for him, and he is among those expected to give way.

Leicester have lost only one of their 10 home Premier League games against the Saints, winning seven (D2).

The Saints have only kept one clean sheet in their last 15 top-flight trips to Leicester, doing so in a 4-0 win in December 2001.

The Foxes’ haul of seven home Premier League wins against Southampton is their most against an opponent in the competition.

Southampton have only won one of their seven league trips to the King Power Stadium, claiming a 2-1 victory in December 2007 – they have lost two and drawn one of three Premier League visits.

Leicester have lost three of their six Premier League games this season (W2 D1), as many as they lost in their previous 42 in the competition (W26 D13).

This is the third time in the last four seasons that the defending champions have had seven points after six games (also Man Utd 13-14 and Chelsea 15-16). Only Blackburn in 1995/96 have collected fewer points from six games as a reigning Premier League champions (4).

The average finishing position in the Premier League era for a team with Leicester’s total of seven points from six games is 12th.

Southampton have gone three hours without conceding in the Premier League.

Since scoring in a Premier League record 11 consecutive games, Jamie Vardy has scored in only nine of 28 appearances (12 goals).

Charlie Austin will be trying to score in three successive Premier League appearances for the first time since Boxing Day 2014.

James Ward-Prowse: Southampton in confident mood ahead of Leicester trip

Show/hide article…

James Ward-Prowse believes Southampton can head to Premier League champions Leicester City full of confidence.

The Saints extended their unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions following a goalless draw away to Hapoel Beer Sheva in their Europa League tie on Thursday night.

There will be little downtime for the squad ahead of Sunday’s trip to the King Power Stadium, when Southampton will aim to record a third straight Premier League win following victories over Swansea and West Ham.

"We have to keep building, but I think we are looking solid and confident at the moment. We have proven we were solid defensively,’’ Ward-Prowse told the club’s official website. "It would be great to get a win before the international break.’’

Southampton manager Claude Puel gambled by resting captain Jose Fonte, top scorer Charlie Austin, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis for Thursday’s trip to Israel, while he then went on to substitute youngster Jake Hesketh in the 35th minute – over concerns about the game’s physicality rather than the 20-year-old’s performance.

Nevertheless, the draw at a venue where the Israeli side are yet to lose since the stadium opened in September 2015 leaves Southampton in a solid position ahead of their trip to Inter Milan at the end of October.

Ward-Prowse added: "We have given ourselves a really good chance to progress to the next stage. We have to continue and build on this. It’s another game unbeaten and we have to take that into the rest of the games in this group.’’

Puel believes his squad can only grow from their experiences in Europe, adding: “It is important to keep a good calm and analysis, to build [towards] our qualification. It is not possible to win all the games and it is not possible to always dominate and have many chances, so we did not concede a goal and will keep this point.”
