Southampton ‘confident’ heading to Leicester, says Ward-Prowse

Show/hide article…

Midfielder James Ward-Prowse believes Southampton can head to Premier League champions Leicester full of confidence.

Saints extended their unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions following a goalless draw away to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in their Europa League Group K tie on Thursday night.

There will be little downtime for the squad ahead of Sunday’s trip to the King Power Stadium, when Southampton will aim to record a third straight Premier League win following victories over Swansea and West Ham.

‘We have to keep building, but I think we are looking solid and confident at the moment. We have proven we were solid defensively,’ Ward-Prowse said on the club’s official website, www.southamptonfc.com

‘It would be great to get a win before the international break.’

Claude Puel gambled by resting captain Jose Fonte, top scorer Charlie Austin, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis for the trip to Israel, while the Saints boss then went on to substitute youngster Jake Hesketh in the 35th minute - over concerns about the game’s physicality rather than the 20-year-old’s performance.

Nevertheless, the draw at a venue where the Israeli side are yet to lose since the stadium opened in September 2015, leaves Southampton in a solid position ahead of their glamour trip to Inter Milan at the end of October.

Ward-Prowse added: 'We have given ourselves a really good chance to progress to the next stage.

‘We have to continue and build on this. It’s another game unbeaten and we have to take that into the rest of the games in this group.’

Puel believes his squad can only grow from their experiences in Europe, adding: 'It is important to keep a good calm and analysis, to build (towards) our qualification.

‘It is not possible to win all the games and it is not possible to always to dominate and have many chances, so we did not concede a goal and will keep this point.’

Eric Black: Southampton to launch investigation into assistant manager’s behaviour following corruption claims

Show/hide article…

Southampton assistant manager Eric Black faces an investigation into his behaviour following allegations he advised how to bribe officials from other teams, the Premier League club said on Friday.

Black is the latest individual to be named in the Daily Telegraph’s investigation into alleged corruption within the English game.

The newspaper’s investigations team this week published information obtained during a 10-month probe into alleged corruption in British football.

Secretly-filmed footage of Sam Allardyce making a variety of controversial comments, including remarks about third-party ownership, cost him the England job on Wednesday after just 67 days as national manager.

Barnsley sacked assistant head coach Tommy Wright on Thursday after the newspaper alleged he took a £5,000 payment from undercover reporters posing as football agents. Wright denies wrongdoing.

QPR manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is the subject of an internal investigation by the Championship club after allegations made against him, which he denies.

The Telegraph alleged Black had offered advice to an undercover reporter posing as a businesswoman on how to bribe officials at other clubs for information on players. He also denies the newspaper allegations.

Southampton said in a statement on Friday: "Having reviewed the limited facts provided in the Daily Telegraph this morning, the club wrote to the newspaper again, requesting a full transcript of the meeting Eric Black attended on 2nd September.

"This request has so far not been granted, and the facts that are presented only in the media are unclear and incomplete.

"The club continues to take any situation relating to our employees very seriously, and we will undertake a full internal review, working closely with the FA and the Premier League.

"We would like to place on record that Eric remains an employee of Southampton Football Club and, like any other employee here, will be afforded respect and support in this matter.

"The club values the support of our fans and in addition, like any employer, appreciates the hard work and dedication of our staff members.

“Southampton Football Club is totally committed to the strong values and culture that our fans and staff share, and will continue to provide full support to any initiative that improves the game we love and treasure.”

Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger has been on a month’s sabbatical while he coached Team Europe at the World Cup of Hockey in his native Canada.

Before the full club statement, Krueger said the allegations against Black were a ‘‘personal issue for him’’ and not directly linked to the club.

U23 Report: Saints 1-2 Bristol City

Show/hide article…

Two second-half headers from visiting striker Shawn McCoulskey proved to be the difference between the two sides in a tight affair at Staplewood.

Thomas O’Connor grabbed a consolation late on, but Saints could not find an equaliser.

It could have been a different story had Saints made the most of four good first-half chances, but Radhi Jaïdi’s side were unable to take anything away from their opening cup game.

Jaïdi named five second-year scholars in his starting line-up, as Tyreke Johnson started in the lone striker role with Olufela Olomola on first-team duty in Israel.

There was also a first start at this level for Siph Mdlalose, while youngsters Callum Slattery and Thomas O’Connor were again selected in midfield.

After a slow opening ten minutes, the hosts burst into life as Mdlalose twice went close in a matter of minutes. The playmaker was first denied by a smart save from Jojo Wollacott, before flashing a shot just wide of the near post shortly after.

As the visitors worked their way back into the game, Saints were forced into a double substitution. Will Wood and Josh Sims both had to make way, with Richard Bakary and Jake Vokins the two introduced.

It was Bakary’s excellent vision and then pass that created Saints’ next opportunity, as he picked out Harley Willard, but the midfielder’s curling low effort was tipped away from danger.

Saints would have gone into the break ahead, had it not been for some incredible defending from Lloyd Kelly on the stroke of half time. As Mdlalose’s shot look destined for the net, the defender somehow chested the ball over the crossbar to deny the hosts.

The visitors had rarely troubled Harry Lewis in the first half, but they began the second period brightly and the Saints stopper had to be alert to tip Joe Morrell’s low drive round the post.

The opening goal did arrive soon after, and it was the visitors who went ahead. A corner from Morrell found McCoulskey, and he was able to loop his header back across goal and just inside the post.

It was from another corner in which the visitors almost doubled their lead. The ball came all the way through to Connor Lemonheigh-Evans, but his goalbound strike was diverted away by Vokins.

The game’s second goal arrived with four minutes remaining, as McCoulskey grabbed his second, again from a Morrell set-piece.

O’Connor did pull one back in stoppage time for Saints, but the Robins held on to take all three points.

Jaïdi: Slow starts cost us

Show/hide article…

Two second-half headers from Shawn McCoulskey earned the visitors all three points, despite a late goal from Thomas O’Connor for Jaïdi’s side.

The former Saints defender felt his side were too slow to getting going in both halves, and in particular the second, with the Robins taking full advantage.

Jaïdi said: “I’m frustrated with the way we started the second half especially.

“Even the first half we started on the back foot, but we came back into the game, we looked to play in the wide areas, but that stopped when we lost the ball quickly in the midfield areas.

“We created some opportunities in the first half and we maybe should have scored, but we didn’t. We were just missing something with the final touch.

“We told them at half time we needed to start the second half positively. We started badly and we didn’t get any momentum and then we conceded the first goal through a set play.

“We told the players they were strong from set plays, but that’s something the boys need to learn from,” he continued.

“They were a motivated team. We had to be more aggressive in the challenges and move the ball quicker than we did.”

Jaïdi named five second-year scholars in his starting line-up, and credited the way in which they kept going until the end, with O’Connor netting a late consolation.

“We started with a young side and the younger boys were desperate to have a positive performance. That didn’t happen here,” he added.

“The credit I can give the players is the last 15 minutes, when we got a goal back, but we gave away two goals and it was too late after that.”
