IN PROFILE: Saints assistant boss Eric Black

Show/hide article…

Eric Black has always been seen as a safe pair of hands to guide clubs through turbulent waters as the board decide on their next captain at the helm.

Black is the latest individual to be named in the Daily Telegraph’s investigation into alleged illicit behaviour within the English game.

The newspaper alleges that Black offered advice to an undercover reporter posing as a businesswoman on how to bribe officials at other clubs for information on players. He denies the allegations.

The Scot was appointed as assistant to Claude Puel at Southampton for the start of the new domestic season, having overseen Aston Villa’s final few matches in the Premier League at the end of last season following the departure of Remi Garde.

When Birmingham needed a caretaker following Steve Bruce’s departure for Wigan in November 2007 Black was the obvious choice, just as he would be for Sunderland a few years later, then again at Blackburn and Rotherham before a return to the top flight at Villa under Garde.

Black, who turns 53 tomorrow, was given his break at Aberdeen by Sir Alex Ferguson when still a teenager, the Lanarkshire-born forward repaying his manager’s faith with the opening goal in the 1983 European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph over Real Madrid in Gothenburg.

After leaving Pittodrie in 1986, Black moved to French club Metz, where he would spend five seasons before the Scotland international was forced into an early retirement by a back problem.

A transition into coaching seemed a natural progression, with Black taking up a role at Celtic before leaving after the departure of John Barnes in February 2000.

Black stepped into the managerial hotseat at Motherwell and then Coventry, where he would soon become accustomed to the precariousness of the job when he was sacked after just 20 games. He won nine games and drew two more before being replaced by Peter Reid.

Following his exit from the Sky Blues, Black returned to a backroom support role, eventually following Bruce to Sunderland, before spells at Ewood Park under Steve Kean, a stint with Wigan and then Rotherham, where he again stepped in as caretaker when Steve Evans left.

Black found himself thrust into the spotlight earlier this year as he presided over the closing seven matches of Villa’s top-flight campaign, and was technically the man in charge when the midlands club were officially relegated on on April 16.

Yet despite suffering six defeats and only collecting one point, the Scottish coach never ducked his media commitments or highlighted the shortcomings on and off the pitch he had been left with.

A fluent French speaker, Black provided a link for Puel as the former Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Nice manager settled into the English game at St Mary’s, with the Saints now starting to produce consistent results in both the Premier League and Europe.

Southampton executive director of football Les Reed said at the time: “Eric Black has an excellent pedigree as a coach and vast experience domestically and internationally.”

Leicester City v Southampton

Show/hide article…

Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy could return after a month out with an ankle injury.

Defender Marcin Wasilewski is available after suspension while Danny Simpson could feature after missing out on the Champions League win over Porto.

Southampton boss Claude Puel is likely to recall several players rested for the Europa League game in midweek.

Charlie Austin, Jose Fonte, Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand are among those expected to be recalled.

Steve Wilson: "Leicester seem to have taken to the Champions League as though to the manor born. Beating Brugge was commendable, beating Porto - a side of seasoned European campaigners - was excellent.

"Perhaps it’s no surprise that their defence of the Premier League is not looking quite so assured.

"Conceding four at both Anfield and Old Trafford will be a worry - a win over Southampton would settle some jitters.

"Saints started slowly, but have now gone five games - winning four - without so much as conceding a goal.

“Just as they should be looking forward to visiting the King Power Stadium with confidence, the allegations made against assistant manager Eric Black, which he denies, are particularly unwelcome.”

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri: "In the Premier League we have played so-so. In the Champions League we have been good but I want consistency.

“For us it’s important to show the same levels of concentration. There’s no magic formula.”

I think the Foxes will edge this one, although the signs are that Saints are improving under Claude Puel.

Virgil van Dijk a rock for Claude Puel and Southampton

Show/hide article…

It is a mystery how Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk slipped under the radar of the Premier League’s elite clubs.

Since arriving at Saints for the relatively modest fee of £13million from Celtic in 2014, Van Dijk has been nothing short of a revelation, playing a major role in the club’s qualification for the Europa League last season and sweeping the board at their end of season awards ceremony.

His form this term has been even more imperious, producing a man of the match performance in virtually every game so far, not least in last Sunday’s 3-0 thrashing of West Ham at the London Stadium.

Van Dijk’s stellar displays have not gone unnoticed by Southampton’s new manager Claude Puel, who has named the Dutchman captain while resting club skipper Jose Fonte for their European campaign.

Leading from the back, Van Dijk was once again at his imperious best as Saints returned from their 2,300-mile journey to face Israeli champions Hapoel Be’er Sheva with a hard-earned 0-0 draw on Thursday night, extending their unbeaten run to five matches.

It is a mark of the high standards the towering centre-back has set himself that rather than bask in the glory of a fifth successive clean sheet he chose to apologise for missing Southampton’s best chance, putting an early header over the crossbar when it appeared easier to score.

Puel’s shocked reaction to the howler, jumping up and down inside his technical area, will have been shared by every Southampton fan who has grown used to seeing Van Dijk compliment his sterling defensive work with vital goals from set pieces.

In many ways Van Dijk is a throwback to the glory days of English football when the sign of a good centre-half was how many times they had broken their nose. He’s a combination of Tony Adams and John Terry rolled into one, with the grace of Rio Ferdinand thrown in for good measure.

So at a time when Chelsea are crying out for a player to replace the talismanic Terry it is a wonder Antonio Conte did not spend the summer bashing Southampton’s door down rather than opting to carry out an ultimately fruitless search in his native Italy.

Jose Mourinho is said to be a big admirer of a Southampton defender – not the no-nonsense Van Dijk, but Fonte, who at seven years his partner’s senior has perhaps already enjoyed the best years of his career, culminating in leading Portugal to Euro 2016 glory in the summer.

Liverpool have used Southampton as a feeder club in recent summers and while the undoubted attacking talents of former St Mary’s stars Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane have been central to the Reds’ impressive start to the season it is doubtful they would have been allowed to lose 2-0 at Burnley with Van Dijk at the heart of their suspect backline.

Even in-form Manchester City would surely find a role to accommodate Van Dijk in their so-far all-conquering line-up, given manager Pep Guardiola’s love of ball-playing defenders.

When Saints travel to champions Leicester on Saturday, they will be looking to extend their run without conceding a goal, which, thanks largely to Van Dijk, already stands at an impressive seven-and-a-half hours.

Southampton were shrewd enough so realise van Dijk’s worth by handing him a bumper new six-year contract over the summer.

They will have been as surprised as anyone who has seen him play on a regular basis that there has not been more of a clamour for his signature.

The top clubs’ loss is most definitely Saints’ gain.

Leicester vs Southampton - Team news, line-ups, injury updates and more

Show/hide article…

Nampalys Mendy could return for Leicester against Southampton on Sunday after overcoming an ankle injury.

The midfielder, who joined from Nice in the summer, has been out for over a month but has returned to training and could replace Daniel Amartey.

Matty James is the Foxes’ only absentee as he battles his own ankle injury while Danny Simpson could return after being dropped for Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win over Porto.

Jay Rodriguez and Sofiane Boufal will sit out of Southampton’s trip to the Premier League champions.

Rodriguez is expected to be out of action for another fortnight as he recovers from a groin strain.

Boufal has a knee injury and will likely miss a similar amount of action.

Charlie Austin, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Jose Fonte, Steven Davis, Cedric Soares, Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic all sat out of the starting XI against Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Thursday night and will likely return to the squad.

Saints stars receive postcard from Sam Allardyce

Show/hide article…

SAINTS stars Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand received a postcard from Sam Allardyce two days after he had left his post as England manager.

All Three Lions players were delivered a postcard headed ‘The Journey Has Begun’, followed by a printed message from Allardyce.

“Well done! Our journey has begun with our first win together,” he said, referring to the 1-0 victory in Slovakia. “Looking forward to seeing you soon.”

The team will play their second and third qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia over the next 12 days but preparations have been thrown into disarray after Allardyce’s contract was terminated by mutual consent on Tuesday evening.

Allardyce made a series of controversial remarks to undercover reporters from the Daily Telegraph and lost his job after just one match and 67 days.

It was an outcome that some within the dressing room are believed to have expected once footage of the incident emerged, although the players may have been more surprised to then get a message in the post from the departed manager on Thursday.

It is understood the postcards were Allardyce’s idea and sent out on Monday afternoon, so irretrievable by the time the Telegraph published its story later that day.

The development follows the FA having to write off around £25,000 worth of t-shirts ahead of Malta’s visit to Wembley next Saturday.

There were 4,000 t-shirts printed with a message from Allardyce for the World Cup qualifier, but understandably they will no longer see the light of day.

Ward-Prowse: A valuable away point

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel’s men drew 0-0 with the Israeli side on Thursday night to make it four points from their opening two games after victory against Sparta Praha before that.

A trip to Internazionale is up next for Saints, and Ward-Prowse feels as though Puel’s side have put themselves in a good position after two games.

“We’ve given ourselves a really good chance to progress to the next stage,” said Ward-Prowse.

“We have to continue and build on this. It’s another game unbeaten and we have to take that into the rest of the games in this group.

“Obviously we wanted to win the game, but sometimes you can’t do that. The opposition stop you and like I said, away from home it’s a valuable point.

“I think we’re disappointed not to get all three points. It’s a difficult place to come and there was a great atmosphere.

“I think in the first half we had a few difficulties, but I think in the end we’ve come away with a valuable point.”

Saints now face Leicester City on Sunday, and Ward-Prowse insists they’re going into it full of confidence.

“It would be great to get a win before the international break,” he added.

“We have to keep building, but I think we’re looking solid and confidence at the moment. We have proven we’re solid defensively.”

U18 Preview: Saints vs Norwich

Show/hide article…

Last time out, a goal from Tyreke Johnson earned a valuable point away at Reading in a 1-1 draw.

Ten points from their opening five matches represents a strong return, but Fleming is particularly pleased with the strong performance levels.

He said: “There were lots of positives against Reading because it’s a difficult place to go and they’re an in-form team.

“If I’m being brutally honest we were a little bit disappointed with the first-half but overall it was a pleasing afternoon for us.

“It’s more the performances we’re interested in both individually and collectively. If you get that right then the results follow.

“Even in the games where we’ve had a couple of losses, the performances have been strong.

“We’ve been consistent. Arsenal and Spurs are the only two teams to beat us and we were very competitive in those games.

“We’ve been what we set out to be at the start of the season which is a difficult team to play against.”

Opponents Norwich City are a side Fleming is more than familiar with, having made over 300 appearances for the Canaries in a successful 10 year spell as a player.

There are few better placed than the Yorkshireman to assess their credentials and he is expecting their style to mirror that of Saints when they visit Staplewood.

“Norwich have some good young players and they’re pretty similar to us in the fact they have a strong Under-18s group who tend to play up with the Under-23s so it depends what kind of side they bring.

“They will play a pretty similar style to us as well as formation and shape.

“That might suit us but it depends on the kind of group they bring.”

Leicester City FC news: Claudio Ranieri reveals Nampalys Mendy back fit and in squad for Southampton clash

Show/hide article…

Nampalys Mendy could return for Leicester City’s clash with Southampton on Sunday.

The midfielder, a summer signing from Nice, has been out of action with an ankle injury after picking up the problem against Arsenal in August.

However, Claudio Ranieri has now revealed that the Frenchman could come off the bench against Southampton at the King Power this weekend.

“Mendy has come back, everybody is in the right condition,” said Ranieri.

"Today he made a normal training session, maybe he is not ready to play from the beginning but he is getting better.

“And I am sure after the international break he will be ready.”

Krueger distances Saints from Eric Black after corruption allegations

Show/hide article…

SAINTS chairman Ralph Krueger has distanced the club from any wrong-doing over allegations made by a national newspaper about assistant manager Eric Black.

Krueger states that it is “personal issue” for Black and nothing to do with Saints after Claude Puel’s number two was named in an undercover sting by the Daily Telegraph as part of their ‘Football For Sale’ exposé.

It follows a club statement that said that Saints were fully committed to investigating the issue surrounding the 52-year-old.

“In regards to the situation with Eric, it’s a personal issue for him,” Krueger said. "It has nothing directly to do with us as a club.

"I don’t have enough information to make judgment on it. All I know is that Southampton Football Club is going to do everything possible to participate with The FA in finding ways to improve regulation as a result. “That’s all I can tell you.”

Black is the latest high profile figure named in the Daily Telegraph’s corruption in football exposes.

He joins a list including Sam Allardyce and Tommy Wright - both of whom have lost their jobs as a result - plus Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Leeds owner Massimo Cellino.

The FA is awaiting “full and unfettered disclosure of all available material from the Daily Telegraph” as the corruption allegations engulfing football which has now implicated Saints assistant manager Black.

Wright was yesterday sacked after claims made against him and the newspaper’s latest claims surround Black, who allegedly offered advice on how to bribe officials at other clubs.

He was filmed at a New Forest hotel apparently saying staff at other clubs could possibly be persuaded to give information about a player to a management company for money.

He has denied the allegations.

Inside Track: Leicester City

Show/hide article…

How would you assess Leicester City’s start to the season?

It’s been a complete contrast really as they’ve been excellent at home but the away form has been out of character compared to last season.

It started off with a defeat against Hull City where they looked a bit tired and didn’t have that usual zip about them that people were so used to seeing.

Defeats at Liverpool and Manchester United also came on the road and conceding from corners is also something that didn’t really happen that often.

I think N’Golo Kanté has been a huge loss because he used to do the running of two people in midfield and it has got people questioning whether Claudio Ranieri can continue with the flat 4-4-2 system away.

Daniel Amartey has been given the chance to fill the void and he was the man of the match in the 2-0 win over FC Porto but he probably needs help in there.

After last year’s title-winning success, what would you say the ambitions are for the season?

I think what happened last year changed the face of the Premier League forever. The elite were embarrassed in many ways by a club like Leicester, who didn’t just win the league but won it by a clear margin of 10 points.

It was a fairytale campaign and I think while it has made it tougher for City, because all the big clubs have now had to respond, it has also given the belief to other clubs that they can achieve similar.

It might even add a bit of pressure because owners of clubs of a similar size to Leicester will be thinking ‘why can’t we do that?’.

I think if the Foxes can finish in the top 8 and get to the knockout stages of the Champions League, which they’re well on their way to doing, it would be another wonderful season.

Two wins out of two in the Champions League has been great but people forget that before winning the league, they were bottom for months!

It looked like they were going down so they’ve come a long, long way in a short space of time.

What’s the style of play and has it been tweaked at all?

It has been pretty much exactly the same as last season. The only slight change is with the arrival of Islam Slimani.

Shinji Okazaki was playing behind Jamie Vardy and almost dropped in to make a five-man midfield at times with his work ethic, whereas Slimani is more an out and out target man.

The plan is still to get the ball forward early and use the pace of Vardy in behind, and with wingers like Riyad Mahrez and Marc Albrighton providing ammunition for Slimani, it could be really effective.

Who have been the star performers so far?

Islam Slimani has scored three goals in two home games but he’s mirrored the side in many ways.

His form has been brilliant at home but he hasn’t replicated that on the road so far, although I thought he played well at Club Brugge in the Champions League.

What kind of game are you expecting on Sunday?

I’m expecting it to be a very tough one for Leicester. Everyone saw the demolition of West Ham at London Stadium last weekend and Charlie Austin is in-form.

He’s a striker that Leicester know all about as they tried to sign when he was at QPR but they have a bid rejected.

I think what the Foxes will have learnt from the last season is that Saints have a physical team, and the Foxes have been susceptible in recent games from set pieces.

José Fonte and Virgil van Dijk were both on the scoresheet at St Mary’s last season in the 2-2 draw so they’ll have to stand up to the physical threat.

Ranieri will not try and change Vardy’s pre-match routine

Show/hide article…

Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri insists he is happy with Jamie Vardy’s pre-match port as long as he continues to leave teams punch drunk.

The striker admitted in his new autobiography he drank a glass of port out of a Lucozade bottle the night before every match last season out of superstition.

He ended the season with 24 goals after firing the Foxes to a shock Premier League win by 10 points.

Vardy has three goals in 10 games this term ahead of Sunday’s visit of Saints and Ranieri is relaxed about his personal preparation, which also includes three cans of Red Bull and two espressos on the day of a game.

He said: "He took it before Porto? Why didn’t he score!?

"A nutritionist gives them something to eat but after they go home they are professional and can eat and drink what they want.

"For me it’s important to watch on the pitch, when they play and train well I am happy.

"Sometimes the players do something just because ‘ah, I scored a goal and I want to continue’. It’s okay. It’s the doctor who has to investigate and say the port is good or not good.

“Jamie is doing a fantastic career, from non-league to national team. I don’t believe port can do something. It is a glass of red wine. It is okay. For me it is only superstition, nothing more.”

Meanwhile, Ranieri’s assistant Craig Shakespeare remains in talks with the Football Association over his role under caretaker England boss Gareth Southgate.

Shakespeare was part of Sam Allardyce’s backroom staff before Allardyce’s exit on Tuesday, just 67 days into the job, following a Daily Telegraph investigation into corruption.

He only joined the national set-up in August but Ranieri would be happy for him to continue under Southgate.

Ranieri added: "I know they are speaking and Craig is fantastic with us and the FA. He is free to choose so they are speaking and I am waiting.

“If he wants to continue I am happy, if he wants to stay with us I am happy.”

Danny Simpson is available after being dropped for Tuesday’s 1-0 Champions League win over Porto and Nampalys Mendy is fit after an ankle injury but Matty James is out with his own ankle problem.
