Puel praises Saints solidarity

Show/hide article…

The goalless scoreline ensured Saints kept a fifth clean sheet in a row against a side yet to be beaten since moving to the Turner Stadium.

And Puel, who freshened up his line-up once more making seven changes, felt it was important moving forward.

He said: “I think it is a good point because we played a good team who have good physical and technical players.

“It was important to come back with a point when we cannot get three for the future.

Puel added: “We could not find a goal or many good chances but we kept a point against a very good team. It is not a surprise that they beat Inter Milan.

“We can see the solidarity between the players to get the result as it was a very difficult game, with a long journey and we now try to recover for Leicester in two days.”

Southampton boss Claude Puel explains Jake Hesketh substitution

Show/hide article…

Southampton boss Claude Puel insisted he had to take Jake Hesketh off after just 35 minutes to “protect” the youngster.

20-year-old midfielder Hesketh, making just his fourth appearance for the Saints, was struggling badly against a useful Hapoel side and Puel ruthlessly replaced him with Dusan Tadic.

The decision raised eyebrows but the Frenchman was vindicated as Tadic was much more effective and helped the Saints go on to claim a valuable point.

Puel said: “It was a tactical problem with Jake. He is a young player and a good experience for him, but the pressure of the fans and the players he was up against were very difficult.

“It was important for me to protect Jake.

“It’s a good result. We played a very good team. When you cannot win a game it’s important to take one point and it’s an important point for the future.

“It was a difficult game. This team won 2-0 at Inter Milan. They are physical, tactical and technical. It’s a good result and important to take a point.”

Hapoel are yet to lose in 23 competitive games at Turner Stadium since it opened in September 2015 so this was always going to be a tough assignment for in-form Saints.

The hosts’ athleticism and movement - both strikers and wingers frequently attempted to stretch the Saints defence - created numerous chances, but the impressive Virgil Van Dijk repeatedly denied them.

An inability to retain possession, particularly in the final third in the absence of Austin’s physicality, clearly frustrated Puel. He responded by bringing on Dusan Tadic.

Although not much changed before half-time, Saints’ start to the second half was more promising.

Fine work on the left wing from Shane Long led to a 50th-minute shooting opportunity for James Ward-Prowse, who from the edge of the area struck powerfully towards the bottom-left corner, where goalkeeper David Goresh dived to save.

Hapoel carved out their best chance in the 65th minute.

A classy move of one-touch football split Southampton’s defence and put captain Maor Melikson through on goal. His fierce drive whistled just wide of the left-hand upright.

Six minutes later, Maya Yoshida’s unconvincing clearance gifted John Ogu space to shoot but he comfortably missed the target.

It was to be the game’s last chance, but on an evening where Sparta Prague defeated Inter 3-1 in the group’s other fixture, a point appeared positive for each.

Southampton confirm assistant manager to be named in ‘Football For Sale’ sting

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s assistant first team coach Eric Black has been accused of offering advice on bribing club officials.

Hours after the Saints 0-0 draw in the Europa League, it was alleged that Black, currently Claude Puel’s no.2, had been secretly filmed by the Telegraph “offering advice on giving bribes to officials at other clubs during a conversation about signing players”

Black, 52, is a former striker who played for Aberdeen and French club Metz. He has also worked at several clubs including Birmingham, Sunderland, Blackburn and Aston Villa. He is understood to have denied the allegations.

The Daily Telegraph claim he suggested that “a couple of grand” could tempt a colleague at another club into providing information about players to a company that wanted to represent footballers.

Southampton have vowed to fight the claims. The south coast club have also criticised the Daily Telegraph for not revealing the nature of the allegations to them before publishing.

Less than an hour before the accusations were put out, the Saints revealed they had contacted the FA and the Premier League to make clear they were willing to work with them on the issue.

A club statement said: “The club immediately requested to be sent, by The Daily Telegraph, the details of this article, but the newspaper declined to share any further information.

“We have today contacted The FA and The Premier League, and intend to work closely with both bodies on this matter when the facts become clear.

Southampton FC news: Claude Puel backs team selection following 0-0 draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel insisted he had made the right decision to rest four key players for the clash with Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

He also praised his team for earning what appeared a valuable point following a goalless draw and explained his decision to substitute youngster Jake Hesketh in the 35th minute was because of his concern about the game’s physicality and not the player’s performance.

The combination of the 0-0 stalemate and a 3-1 victory for Sparta Prague over Inter Milan leaves Southampton at the top of Group K and, like second-placed Hapoel, with a total of four points from two games.

They next visit Inter before hosting them back at St Mary’s, but despite Southampton appearing to miss the rested Charlie Austin’s physical presence and the result ending a run of four successive victories, Puel said: "It was important to take some players to keep fresh for a game in two days (in the Premier League against Leicester).

"Israel is very hard, it’s a long journey, a difficult opponent. All my players have done (well) because it’s not easy and it’s not a surprise to see (Hapoel) at this level.

"It was a difficult game and I am happy to take this point. We played a good team, a physical team, a good team tactically.

"It’s a good experience for the future. When we win away at West Ham (last Sunday) and you take one point with the difficulties here with all this travel, the journey, and we go to play now in two days against Leicester.

“It’s very hard and difficult but my team learned. They gave a good answer in difficult conditions.”

Hapoel’s movement and athleticism gave them the greater attacking threat, explaining how they succeeded in unexpectedly winning 2-0 at Inter two weeks ago and allowing them to dominate possession with Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand, Steven Davis and captain Jose Fonte also rested.

The promising Hesketh had recently impressed with his performance and by scoring his first senior goal in the recent EFL Cup defeat to Crystal Palace, but after replacing him with Dusan Tadic in the first half, Puel insisted he was trying to protect the 20-year-old.

“I prefer to change because it was difficult that we didn’t have the ball,” he said. "It was physical and I prefer to protect him and it was for me a tactical problem.

"I have confidence with Jake. When I put him in to start: it’s a young player for the future but it’s important also to protect him and all the players.

“It was difficult but we will see Jake in other games and other moments and it’s not a problem.”

Southampton act as Eric Black set to be named in ongoing Telegraph football investigation

Show/hide article…

Southampton have pledged to assist the Football Association and the Premier League after releasing a statement saying assistant manager Eric Black is set to be named in the Daily Telegraph’s ongoing investigations into football.

Saints pre-empted the newspapers’ latest round of articles under the strapline ‘Football For Sale’ by saying they had requested details from the Telegraph - a request they said had been turned down.

The club’s statement read: "Southampton Football Club has today been made aware by The Daily Telegraph that, as part of their ongoing investigation, the club’s assistant first team manager Eric Black will feature as part of an article in tomorrow’s paper.

"The club immediately requested to be sent, by The Daily Telegraph, the details of this article, but the newspaper declined to share any further information.

"We have today contacted The FA and The Premier League, and intend to work closely with both bodies on this matter when the facts become clear.

“Southampton Football Club is fully committed to investigating any situation that directly or indirectly relates to our club, employees or the wider community.”

Black was appointed to Southampton’s coaching staff during the summer as assistant to Claude Puel.

How Southampton’s Eric Black advised ‘businessmen’ how to bribe lower league staff to get players for fictitious agency

Show/hide article…

FA rules state that intermediaries “must not give, offer or seek to offer, any consideration of any kind” to a club official “in return for any benefit, service, favour or any kind of preferential treatment”.

Officials are banned from accepting such offers and are required to report any potential breach of the rules to the FA.

Mr Black, 52, revered by Aberdeen fans for scoring in the club’s European Cup Winners’ Cup final win over Real Madrid in 1983, had arranged with Mr McGarvey for the Sept 2 meeting to be held at the Lime Wood.

He lives in the Midlands, having been caretaker manager of Aston Villa FC, and regularly stays at Hampshire hotels including the Lime Wood, where rooms cost £330 to £1,050.

Mr McGarvey told him of a plan to pay managers to speak to investors in the Far East firm during trips to Singapore and Hong Kong.

“We had this little plan,” said Mr McGarvey. “We’ll give some managers a few quid. There’s a lot of managers who I’m saying don’t take anything. Because for 100 grand or 50 grand in readies, they get caught, they’re three million, four million pound a year, they could lose their job and lose everything over a 50 grand bung. What we’ve got going on, so somebody like [a named manager] will do public speaking … I can’t give anyone a chance to go back to the chief executive and say, 'he offered me a bung,’ because you’d be out of the game. Who’s going to say that?

“So I’m going to say … come out, we’ll give you a hundred grand. We’d want you to do a little motivational speech. They’ve got an investment kind of deal so you can send it to wherever you want. You want to do it to a charity, you want to give the percentage to your mum and dad, do it to a charity.”

Mr Black: “Or a bank account. You could always do it that way.”

The reporter: “He can invoice us, or whatever, whatever he likes…” Mr Black: “Have him do it through a limited company or something, you can just invoice it through that.”

Saints confirm assistant manager Eric Black’s involvement in Daily Telegraph ‘Football For Sale’ sting

Show/hide article…

SAINTS have released a statement revealing that assistant manager Eric Black is part of the Daily Telegraph’s ongoing investigations into corruption in football.

The club say they will work closely with The FA and Premier League with any investigation into the matter regarding Black, who is featuring in the Telegraph’s latest reports of their ‘Football For Sale’ undercover sting that saw Sam Allardyce lose his job as England manager.

Allardyce was filmed advising people purporting to be businessmen how to circumvent the FA’s rules on third-party ownership.

The statement regarding Black reads: "Southampton Football Club has today been made aware by The Daily Telegraph that, as part of their on-going investigation, the club’s Assistant First Team Manager Eric Black will feature as part of an article in tomorrow’s (Friday) paper.

Black, 52, joined Saints this summer as assistant manager to Claude Puel. He made his name with Aberdeen in the early 1980s, scoring for Alex Ferguson’s side as they beat Real Madrid to win the 1983 European Cup Winners Cup.

Black was filmed by the Telegraph at the Lime Wood Hotel in the New Forest earlier this month allegedly advising ‘businessmen’ how to bribe lower league staff to get players for a ficticious agency.

Black was accompanied by agent Scott McGarvey, a former Manchester United striker who Black has known since his teenage days in Scotland.

A spokesman for Black told The Telegraph: “[Mr Black] does not recall Mr McGarvey making suggestions that football officials should be paid during transfer negotiations – this was not the purpose of the meeting so far as our client understood it."

Black could now face an uncertain future at St Mary’s - particularly as earlier today the Saints chairman revealed his dismay at the current allegations of corruption in English football revealed by The Telegraph.

Ralph Krueger told ESPN that this week’s reports alleging a culture of illicit payments between agents and managers had “shocked” and “upset” the Saints board.

Krueger said Saints’ recent success has been built on “honest and open” values and he now hoped that the rest of football would follow suit.

“We’ve been a club that’s been driving, wanting to get control of the evolving agent world around us and we believe we’re going to have ears now,” said Krueger.

"We’re going to use this, for sure, as a club, to fight for change and to fight for more regulation.

“We are all for regulation, and we are one of the most disciplined clubs in English football in terms of the way we deal with agents and youth academy players.”

The 52-year-old Scot, who has worked at Birmingham City, Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers and most recently Aston Villa, may now face an uncertain future at St Mary’s.

Van Dijk: Our team spirit showed

Show/hide article…

On a hot night in Israel, and in front of a raucous home crowd, Saints fought hard to earn a 0-0 draw that keeps them top of Group K, with four points from their opening two matches.

Claude Puel’s side certainly didn’t have the game all their way, but they ensured a fifth clean sheet in a row to leave them heading home with what could be a valuable result.

“I think that shows the team spirit at the moment,” van Dijk said. "It was a tough game and we knew before the game it was going to be tough with their fans behind them, and they’ve got a couple of quality players as well.

"We go home with a point, and I think we can be a bit satisfied as well with that. Obviously, we want to win, but I think overall we can be proud.

"It’s a strong start, and I think the good thing is that we didn’t lose, and for the confidence of the team that we kept a clean sheet again.

“Obviously, there are a lot of things we need to do much better, especially in the first half, but we kept a clean sheet, we take a point after a long journey and everybody can be proud of themselves I think.”

Van Dijk, who captained the side, did admit he was kicking himself afterwards for not converting the best opportunity of the night, when he headed James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick over the bar from close range in the fourth minute.

“I should have done better with the header, and I’m still thinking about it and am still angry about it as well, but we need to move on,” he said.

Eric Black: Southampton assistant named in corruption claims

Show/hide article…

Southampton assistant manager Eric Black gave undercover reporters advice on how to bribe officials at other clubs, the Daily Telegraph has claimed.

Black, 52, was filmed apparently naming staff at other clubs who could be induced to pass on information about players to a company for money.

Such payments would be against Football Association rules.

Black, who oversaw Aston Villa’s final seven Premier League matches last season, has denied the allegations.

“It doesn’t take too much to get these people involved,” Black says in the covert recording.

“They won’t have an awful lot of money.”

Former Aberdeen striker Black quotes a figure of “a couple of grand”, which the Telegraph claims was his suggestion of a suitable payment to an unnamed assistant coach at a Championship side in return for introducing players to the undercover reporters’ fictitious agency.

Black denies suggesting that any football official should be paid, saying that his "couple of grand"comment related to a freelance scout that an agency looking to break into the football industry might approach.

A spokesperson for Black said his client did not recall the possibility of bribing officials being mentioned.

“This was not the purpose of the meeting so far as our client understood it. Any suggestion that he was complicit in such discussions is false,” the spokesperson added.

Southampton said they were “fully committed” to investigating the claims and intend to work closely with the Premier League and Football Association on them.

Black has held permanent managerial posts at Motherwell and Coventry, as well as having caretaker spells at Birmingham, Sunderland, Blackburn, Rotherham and Villa.

His played for Aberdeen and French side Metz and won three caps for Scotland before he became a coach at Celtic.

The allegations about Black are the latest from the Daily Telegraph’s investigation into corruption in football.

On Thursday, Barnsley assistant boss Tommy Wright was sacked over claims he took cash for trying to engineer certain transfers. Wright has “categorically denied” the claims.

Sam Allardyce left his post as England manager on Tuesday, making a “whole-hearted apology” in the wake of allegations in the newspaper that he offered advice on how to “get around” rules on player transfers.

Black filmed allegedly giving advice on bribing lower league staff

Show/hide article…

Southampton assistant manager Eric Black is the latest figure to become embroiled in alleged corruption in football.

The club released a statement moments after their players battled to a 0-0 draw in Israel where Black was on the bench, indicating they had been contacted by the Daily Telegraph as part of the newspaper’s investigation into corruption in the game.

Southampton were told that Black would feature in their next story.

Black has been filmed by the Telegraph allegedly advising their undercover reporters, who were posing as businessmen, on how to bribe lower-League staff.

In the video, Black suggests he knows a Championship assistant manager who would pass on information about players for payment to a company that wanted to represent them. ‘These people at that level he’s earning, they won’t have an awful lot of money,’ Black said. FA rules ban any payments of that kind.

Southampton have contacted the FA and the Premier League and will work closely with them to resolve the issue.

Their statement read: ‘Southampton Football Club have today been made aware by the Daily Telegraph that the club’s assistant first-team manager Eric Black will feature as part of an article in tomorrow’s paper.

‘The club immediately requested to be sent the details of this article, but the newspaper declined to share any further information.’

Black was caretaker manager at Aston Villa toward the end of last season as they were relegated from the Premier League, but moved to Southampton in July to work alongside manager Claude Puel.

He was seen as a perfect aide to Puel because he spent five seasons in France with Metz and is fluent in French.

Southampton assistant Eric Black accused in Daily Telegraph sting

Show/hide article…

Southampton assistant manager Eric Black is the latest person to feature in the Daily Telegraph’s ongoing football investigations, after being accused of offering advice on bribing club officials.

The club revealed on Thursday evening that Claude Puel’s number two will feature in Friday’s article in the sting which has rocked English football.

In the video, Black is seen speaking with undercover reporters posing as representatives of a Far East firm and the Telegraph allege he advises the ‘businessmen’ how to bribe lower league staff to identify players for their fictitious agency.

Black attended the meeting at the Lime Wood Hotel in Hampshire on September 2 along with football agent Scott McGarvey, who thought he would be working to identify promising young players for the Far East firm to sign.

Earlier this week, Sam Allardyce lost his job as England boss after being filmed advising people purporting to be businessmen how to circumvent the FA’s rules on third-party ownership.

The Saints say they have contacted the Football Association and the Premier League and “intend to work closely with both bodies on this matter when the facts become clear”.

The statement said: "Southampton Football Club has today been made aware by The Daily Telegraph that, as part of their on-going investigation, the club’s Assistant First Team Manager Eric Black will feature as part of an article in tomorrow’s paper.

A spokesman for Mr Black told the Telegraph: "[Mr Black] does not recall Mr McGarvey making suggestions that football officials should be paid during transfer negotiations - this was not the purpose of the meeting so far as our client understood it.

“Any suggestion that he was complicit in such discussions is false.”

The reference to paying “a couple of grand” related to a freelance scout he suggested the Far East company should approach, the spokesman said.

Black, who served as Aston Villa caretaker manager after the departure of Remi Garde, was appointed to Southampton’s coaching staff during the summer as assistant to Puel.

Southampton pick up valuable point from stalemate in Israel

Show/hide article…

Southampton secured a valuable point in their bid to progress to the Europa League’s knockout stages with a 0-0 draw as Hapoel Be’er Sheva continued their extraordinary undefeated record at the Turner Stadium.

The hosts are yet to lose there since the stadium opened in September 2015, playing 23 competitive fixtures, and sit second behind Group K leaders Saints, with both teams on four points from two games.

Manager Claude Puel gambled by resting captain Jose Fonte, top scorer Charlie Austin, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis, but in their absence they drew where Celtic lost 2-0 in August, and against a team who two weeks ago won at Inter Milan, Southampton’s next opponents.

In only the fourth minute, Virgil van Dijk - deputising as captain - wasted a fine chance to give the visitors the lead.

From a right-wing free-kick, Matt Targett delivered an outswinging cross that left the central defender with both time and space to head at goal. Under minimal pressure, however, he sent the ball harmlessly over the crossbar.

If that played on his mind as Hapoel began to demonstrate the qualities that inspired that surprise 2-0 victory at Inter, it did not show.

The hosts’ athleticism and movement - both strikers and wingers frequently attempted to stretch Southampton’s defence - created numerous chances, but the impressive Van Dijk repeatedly denied them.

Having already taken the power off one shot with a deflection, he sprinted back to dispossess Hapoel’s Ben Bitton just as he broke into a goalscoring position. In the 28th minute he anticipated another threatening through ball which he reached first to clear.

An inability to retain possession, particularly in the final third in the absence of Austin’s physicality, clearly frustrated Puel.

He responded by substituting the ineffective Jake Hesketh, 20, after only 35 minutes and replacing him with the more proven Dusan Tadic.

Little changed before half-time, but their start to the second half was more promising.

Fine work on the left wing from Shane Long led to a 50th-minute shooting opportunity for James Ward-Prowse, who from the edge of the area struck powerfully towards the bottom-left corner, where goalkeeper David Goresh dived to save.

It was in the 65th minute, by which point no other notable chances had been created in a game that appeared destined to end goalless, that Hapoel produced their greatest threat.
