Hapoel Be’er Sheva 0-0 Southampton: Saints held by Israelis in Europa League

Show/hide article…

Southampton retained their spot at the top of Group K following their 0-0 draw with Hapoel Be’er Sheva at the Turner Stadium.

Having won their opening group game 3-0 against Sparta Prague, Claude Puel’s side could afford to relax on what looked to be a daunting trip. Opting to leave the likes of Dusan Tadic and Pierre Hojbjerg on the substitutes bench, the away side fielded a mixture of youth and experience as they chased their first European away win since the 1981/82 season.

The Saints should have gone ahead inside five minutes after Virgil Van Dijk escaped his marker from a set-piece. James Ward-Prowse delivered the ball into the box, where Van Dijk was waiting to head home, but the defender somehow managed to miss the target from three-yards out.

After a subdued start by the hosts, Hapoel Be’er Sheva picked up the pace on the quarter hour. Jordy Clasie pressed striker Anthony Nwakaeme with his back to goal, but the striker spun impressively before firing a powerful effort straight into the arms of Fraser Forster.

The visitors were coming under considerable pressure midway through the second half. Playing with a real energy and sense of occasion, Mihaly Korhut teed up Lucio Maranhao for a header but he could not generate the necessary force to beat Forster in goal.

Feeling the need to halt the home side’s dominance, Claude Puel decided to substitute youngster Jake Hasketh 10 minutes before the break. Dusan Tadic saw his rest cut short as he stepped off the bench to replace Hasketh and play his part in the rest of an uneventful first half.

Minutes after the restart, Ward-Prowse showed excellent quick feet to skip away from two Hapoel Be’er Sheva defenders. The Saints academy product created space for himself 25-yards from goal before unleashing a driven effort that goalkeeper David Goresh had to palm away.

The hosts began to pile the pressure on, as they chased a rare victory over English opposition for an Israeli side. Nwakaeme drove forward on the left flank before sliding the ball into the unmarked Maor Melikson. But despite getting his shot away, Melikson saw his effort fly just past the far post.

Some casual defending by Maya Yoshida presented Hapoel Be’er Sheva with yet another chance to open the scoring. The Japanese international’s poor clearance was seized upon by Nwakaeme, before he pulled his shot wide of the target despite having time and space.

Southampton enjoyed a brief respite from the Hapoel Be’er Sheva onslaught to force an opening of their own. Cuco Martina, who was the Saints’ most impressive player on the night, pinged in a wonderful cross along the six-yard box, but nobody was there to tap home.

Elsewhere in Group K, Inter Milan lost 3-1 to Sparta Prague which leaves Southampton top of the standings on goal difference.

Hapoel Be’er Sheva 0-0 Southampton: Claude Puel’s side held in Israel

Show/hide article…

Southampton earned a goalless draw against Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel in their Europa League Group K clash on Thursday.

In a game of few chances, Virgil van Dijk squandered Southampton’s clearest opening when he headed wide from James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick after four minutes.

Maor Melikson went close for the hosts in the second half, but both teams seemed happy to play for a point in the closing stages.

The draw sees Be’er Sheva and Southampton move onto four points each after two matches, with the Saints travelling to Inter Milan next in the competition on October 20.

Claude Puel, who left Charlie Austin, Jose Fonte, Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand at home ahead of Sunday’s clash with Leicester, made seven changes from the 3-0 win over West Ham, including a European debut for youngster Jake Hesketh.

The Frenchman’s side were largely second best in the first half, but should have gone in front after just four minutes when Van Dijk miscued his header from Ward-Prowse’s dangerous delivery.

Anthony Nwakaeme’s firm strike from distance was as good as it got for Be’er Sheva, who dominated possession without threatening Fraser Forster.

But Puel, clearly unhappy with a lethargic first-half display, replaced Hesketh with Dusan Tadic 11 minutes before the break.

The Serbia international made a difference, and linked up well with Cuco Martina down Southampton’s right, but too often a poor final ball let the visitors down.

Ward-Prowse forced David Goresh into a smart stop with Southampton’s first shot on target on 51 minutes, while substitute Ben Sahar was inches away from turning home Melikson’s cross-shot for Be’er-Sheva.

The Israeli champions struggled to break down their Premier League opponents for much of the evening, but the lively Nwakaeme did waste a promising opportunity when he dragged wide after Maya Yoshida’s poor clearance.

The stalemate means Southampton, who face Leicester at the King Power on Sunday, stay top of Group K on four points thanks to their superior goal difference over Be’er Sheva.

Inter Milan’s 3-1 defeat in Prague leaves the Serie A giants bottom of the group, with Sparta Prague third on three points.

5 things we learned from Hapoel Be’er Sheva 0-0 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Southampton could only manage a point from their Europa League match against Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel.

The Saints travelled without four key first team players for their second Group K match and it told as they struggled to a dour 0-0 draw.

Despite the draw Southampton remain top of the group on goal difference and look set to qualify from the knockout stages.

With his key men to come in for the trip to Leicester on Sunday, Claude Puel won’t be too disheartened with the result.

Here are five things we learned.

Claude Puel’s decision to leave Charlie Austin at home backfired as the Saints drew a blank in an uninspiring night in front of goal.

Austin has been in good form of late, netting five goals in his last four games, and Southampton missed him in Israel as they could only manage three shots on target.

Having lost forwards Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle in the summer, Southampton are limited for options up front, and it is difficult to see where the rest of their goals will come from.

Austin was keeping a keen eye on proceedings though, tweeting support for his team-mates throughout the match.

Following on from their shock win over Inter Milan in their first group game, Hapoel gave another good account of themselves and they were unlucky not to take all three points in the Group K match.

The Iraeli Premier League Champions are unbeaten at home this season and looked impressive again, mustering 13 attempts at the Southampton goal.

Having knocked Olympiakos out of the Champions League qualifiers, before narrowly going out to Celtic, it seems they have been largely underestimated and have a good chance of progressing from the group stage.

Having gained a reputation as one of the best teams at developing young talent, Southampton continue to produce a number of homegrown stars.

Players such as Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all come through the academy set-up over recent times and the Saints will be buoyed by the presence of more youth graduates on display.

Jake Hesketh, 20, made his European bow in only his fourth appearance for the Saints, whilst 21-year-old Matthew Targett looked assured at left back.

James Ward-Prowse has been a key figure for them over the past couple of seasons, too.

With Jack Butland injured and Joe Hart suffering a dip in form, Southampton keeper Fraser Forster did his chances of an England start no harm, dealing with the Hapoel attacks with ease in what was a comfortable display.

Usual third choice back-up Forster has only made six appearances for his country, but he looks like he is ready to be called upon.

Gareth Southgate now has a decision to make on who his first choice between the sticks.

Manager Claude Puel rested several key players for the clash with Hapoel, but Southampton missed the chance to take all three pointd.

Ryan Bertrand , Charlie Austin , Jose Fonte and Steven Davis were all left out of the travelling squad to Israel, and would no doubt have made a difference had they been involved.

With two games to come against Group K favourites Inter Milan , Puel will have learnt that he simply does not have the strength in depth to afford leaving his better players out - if they are to progress further in the competition.

Hapoel Be’er Sheva 0-0 Southampton: Van Dijk misses sitter for Saints

Show/hide article…

Southampton made their furthest ever trip for a competitive fixture to face Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva, so it was a long way home to reflect on a goalless draw.

Five hours by plane, two more on the road from Tel Aviv to the middle of the desert, the same on the way back on Friday morning when they would have pondered a useful point away from home in the Europa League against a club who stunned Inter Milan in the last round of group fixtures. Yet they could and should have turned one into three as reward for a round trip of more than 4,000 miles.

Manager Claude Puel continued to rotate and spared key players Jose Fonte and Charlie Austin — with five goals in four games — the journey. As a result it also denied Southampton the cutting edge they have enjoyed in the last fortnight.

Instead, they produced the sort of game that happens when a Premier League side stand off and allow inferior opponents with five at the back to play.

Virgil van Dijk could have opened the game up and should have put Southampton on their way after only four minutes. James Ward-Prowse served up one of his sumptuous deliveries into Be’er Sheva’s penalty area from a free kick 40 yards out and the centre-back steamed in at speed and was unmarked when he met the ball a few yards out, but headed over the crossbar and wide.

‘I should’ve scored and we would’ve won the game,’ Van Dijk admitted. ‘But I’m OK, we kept a clean sheet again, after a long and tough journey.’

Be’er Sheva surprised the rest of the Europa League’s competitors with victory against Serie A giants Inter and showed Southampton how that was possible, dominating much of the match.

The club have turned around under the ownership of Alona Barkat, in the Israeli second tier not so long ago but winning their Premier League last season for the first time in 40 years.

For all their possession, however, chances were limited. In the 16th minute, Anthony Nwakaeme turned sharply on the edge of the box and struck the ball cleanly, but Fraser Forster got his body behind the shot and held it.

Captain Maor Melikson was released by Nwakaeme in the 67th minute, but dragged his shot across goal and wide of the left post.

Puel was not happy with what he saw in the first half, particularly as his side had won their previous four matches without conceding a goal, and made a change after half-an-hour.

The Southampton manager comes across as soft, with his whispered voice, but he clearly has a hard edge, hooking 20-year-old Jake Hesketh for tactical reasons not long into his European debut.

‘He’s a young player, it’s a good experience for him, but the pressure of the fans, of the opponents, all in the stadium, was very difficult, it was important for me to protect Jake,’ Puel said.

A record-breaking trip, but one to forget — especially for Hesketh.

Hapoel Beer Sheva 0 Southampton 0: Saints secure vital Europa League point

Show/hide article…

Despite scoring five goals in his last four games, Austin was left at home by Saints’ tinkerman boss Claude Puel.

And the decision massively backfired as toothless Saints struggled to break down their Israeli opponents on a night of frustration.

When asked where he was watching his team-mates toil in his absence, Austin Tweeted: “At my house with my wife.”

But Frenchman Puel, who also left out captain Jose Fonte and key duo Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand, saw the point as a positive one.

His side travel to champions Leicester in the Premier League on Sunday and he said: “I think it is a good point. When you can’t take three points one is good.

Inter slump again with Saints up next

Show/hide article…

INTER Milan’s troublesome Europa League campaign worsened with a 3-1 defeat to Sparta Prague.

Saints face the Serie A giants in their next Group K match at the San Siro next month, with Frank De Boer’s side yet to tally a point after two group stage games.

With around £100m worth of talent left out of the squad due to financial fair play, Inter’s weakened side were defeated for a second successive match, edging them towards what would be a catastrophic elimination from the Europa League for one of Europe’s most illustrious clubs.

After losing 2-0 to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in their opening group match, Vaclav Kadlec opened the scoring on seven minutes for Sparta.

The Czech outfit, who Saints easily beat 3-0 two weeks ago in their opening group match at St Mary’s, were then two up as Kadlec struck again on 25 minutes after a cleverly worked free-kick.

Rodrigo Palacio found Inter a foothold in the game on 71 minutes to make it 2-1, but, four minutes later, Andrea Ranocchia was shown a red card for a second bookable offense, meaning the visitors had to finisht the game a man down.

Mario Holek then buried the Italians with another Sparta goal just moments after they went down to ten men.

Inter now sit bottom of Group K ahead of Saints’ visit on October 20.

Hapoel Be’er Sheva 0-0 Southampton - Saints earn valuable point in Israel

Show/hide article…

SAINTS secured a valuable point in their bid to progress to the Europa League’s knockout stages with a 0-0 draw as Hapoel Be’er Sheva continued their extraordinary undefeated record at the Turner Stadium.

The hosts are yet to lose there since the stadium opened in September 2015, playing 23 competitive fixtures, and sit second behind Group K leaders Saints, with both teams on four points from two games.

Manager Claude Puel gambled by resting captain Jose Fonte, top scorer Charlie Austin, Ryan Bertrand and Steven Davis, but in their absence they drew where Celtic lost 2-0 in August, and against a team who two weeks ago won at Inter Milan, Southampton’s next opponents.

In only the fourth minute, Virgil van Dijk - deputising as captain - wasted a fine chance to give the visitors the lead.

From a right-wing free-kick, Matt Targett delivered an outswinging cross that left the central defender with both time and space to head at goal. Under minimal pressure, however, he sent the ball harmlessly over the crossbar.

If that played on his mind as Hapoel began to demonstrate the qualities that inspired that surprise 2-0 victory at Inter, it did not show.

The hosts’ athleticism and movement - both strikers and wingers frequently attempted to stretch Southampton’s defence - created numerous chances, but the impressive Van Dijk repeatedly denied them.

Having already taken the power off one shot with a deflection, he sprinted back to dispossess Hapoel’s Ben Bitton just as he broke into a goalscoring position. In the 28th minute he anticipated another threatening through ball which he reached first to clear.

An inability to retain possession, particularly in the final third in the absence of Austin’s physicality, clearly frustrated Puel.

He responded by substituting the ineffective Jake Hesketh, 20, after only 35 minutes and replacing him with the more proven Dusan Tadic.

Little changed before half-time, but their start to the second half was more promising.

Fine work on the left wing from Shane Long led to a 50th-minute shooting opportunity for James Ward-Prowse, who from the edge of the area struck powerfully towards the bottom-left corner, where goalkeeper David Goresh dived to save.

It was in the 65th minute, by which point no other notable chances had been created in a game that appeared destined to end goalless, that Hapoel produced their greatest threat.

A classy move of one-touch football split Southampton’s defence and put captain Maor Melikson through on goal. His fierce drive whistled just wide of the left-hand upright.

Six minutes later, Maya Yoshida’s unconvincing clearance gifted John Ogu space to shoot but he comfortably missed the target.

It was to be the game’s last chance, but on an evening where Sparta Prague defeated Inter 3-1 in the group’s other fixture, a point appeared positive for each.

Hapoel Be’er Sheva 0-0 Southampton - Puel defends decision to leave Saints stars at home

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel defended his decision to leave some of his star players at home as Saints battled out a hard fought goalless draw in Israel.

With a trip to Premier League champions Leicester just around the corner on Sunday, and a gruelling travel schedule to face Hapoel Be’er Sheva in last night’s Europa League fixture, Puel left the likes of Charlie Austin and Jose Fonte in Southampton.

Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand were also held back for the game at the King Power Stadium, and those that came to Israel were left to face a physically strong team in an intimidating atmosphere and fought hard for a point in a scrappy game.

Puel said: “I think we can see good solidarity and a good second half.

“You come back in the second half with more calm and solidarity to keep this point.

“We don’t have the good chances and the good efficiency in the final third of the opponent but I think it was important to consider this is a good team and to take also some players to keep fresh for a game in two days and it was a difficult game.

“Israel is very hard, it’s a long journey, difficult opponent and with all the fans of this team and I think all my players have done well because it’s not easy and it’s not a surprise to see the team at this level.

“It was a difficult group and it’s important to view our qualification.”

Group K looks wide open for Saints, with Hapoel Be’er Sheva and Puel’s men sat on four points from two games, and Sparta Prague on three after their defeat of Inter Milan who, remarkably, are without a point so far.

“The first half for us was very difficult with the good pressing of the opponent, with the ball too quick.

“When you cannot win a game and take three points it’s important to keep this point and I think it’s interesting to take a point tonight and I hope for the future for qualification.

“We play a very good team and congratulations to them and their trainer and also their fans were fantastic putting us under pressure.

“It was a difficult game and I am happy to take this point.”

The whole Israel experience has been a steep learning curve for Saints, but Puel believes it will make them far stronger.

“It’s a good experience for the future of course,” he insisted.

“When we win away at West Ham and you take one point with the difficulties here with all this travel, the journey, and we go to play now in two days against Leicester and it’s very hard and difficult but I am enjoy because my team learned and it’s difficult all the time.
