Europa League round-up: Inter MIlan in danger of early exit and Mario Balotelli scores in Nice defeat

Show/hide article…

Europa League round-up: Inter MIlan in danger of early exit and Mario Balotelli scores in Nice defeat

Three-time champions Inter Milan face a battle to get through Europa League Group K after a second successive defeat.

A 3-1 setback against Sparta Prague followed up a 2-0 loss to Hapoel Be’er Sheva to leave Inter pointless and bottom of the group, four points behind Hapoel and Southampton, who drew 0-0 in Israel.

Vaclac Kadlec’s first-half brace set Sparta on their way and though Inter captain Rodrigo Palacio pulled one back, Mario Holek quickly put the game to bed.

Krasnodar and Schalke took a stranglehold on Group I after each recording their second straight win.

The Russian side won 5-2 against Nice as Joaozinho’s double added to Fedor Smolov’s opener. Nice twice pulled within one, through first Mario Balotelli and then Wylan Cyprien, but substitute Ari’s late double secured victory.

Schalke beat Salzburg 3-1 with goals from Leon Goretzka and Naldo either side of Duje Caleta-Car’s own goal. Jonatan Soriano pulled one back for the Austrians.

Fiorentina were also comfortable winners, beating 10-man Qarabag 5-1 to top Group J. Khouma Babacar and Mauro Zarate scored twice each, with Nikola Kalinic also on target. Dino Ndlovu scored in injury time for Qarabag, who had Elvin Yunuszada sent off after half an hour.

PAOK Salonika beat Slovan Liberec 2-1 in the same group, Stefanos Athanasiadis scoring twice to overcome Nikolay Komlichenko’s first-minute opener.

Kasper Dolberg’s goal was enough to keep Ajax top of Group G with a 1-0 win over Standard Liege, who hit a post late on through Isaac Mbenza. Celta Vigo are two points back after late goals from John Guidetti and Daniel Wass saw them beat Panathinaikos 2-0.

Shakhtar Donetsk beat Braga 2-0 with goals from Taras Stepanenko and Viktor Kovalenko to stay clear in Group H, despite Fred’s red card early in the second half. Gent beat Konyaspor by the same score thanks to Kenneth Saief and Renato Neto.

FC Zurich beat Osmanlispor 2-1 with goals from Marco Schonbachler and Dzengis Cavusevic as Group L closed up.

Adam Maher scored for the previous group leaders, who were overhauled by Villarreal after the Yellow Submarine’s 1-1 draw with Steaua Bucharest - Rafael Borre and Sulley Muniru with the goals.

Mainz beat Gabala 3-2 in Group C’s early game, leading through Yoshinori Muto but falling behind to goals from Ruslan Gurbanov and Sergei Zenjov before Jhon Cordoba and Levin Oztunali swung the game decisively back their way.

Later in the evening, Nolan Roux’s injury-time goal then earned St Etienne a 1-1 draw after Youri Tielemans’ penalty gave Anderlecht the lead.

Irish underdogs Dundalk continued their fairytale European experience with a 1-0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv thanks to Ciaran Kilduff’s goal.

On four points, they trail only Zenit St Petersburg and move ahead of AZ Alkmaar after Zenit won 5-0 in the meeting of those two sides. Aleksandr Kokorin scored twice with the impressive Giuliano, Domenico Criscito and Oleg Shatov also on target.

All four teams in Group F are level on three points after Athletic Bilbao beat Rapid Vienna 1-0 with a goal from Benat Etxebarria and Genk won 3-1 against Sassuolo.

Manchester United and Fenerbahce enjoyed 1-0 wins in Group A, Fener moving top with victory over Feyenoord thanks to Emmanuel Emenike’s goal while Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed United past Zorya Luhansk.

Roma joined Austria Vienna at the top of Group E after a 4-0 win over Astra Giurgiu with goals from Kevin Strootman, Federico Fazio and Mohamed Salah and a Fabricio own goal. The Austrian side drew 0-0 with Viktoria Plzen.

APOEL top Group B after beating Olympiacos 1-0 with a goal from Pieros Sotiriou, though they needed Boy Waterman to brilliantly save from Tarik Elyounoussi late on. Astana and Young Boys drew 0-0.

THE VERDICT: Saints get a first taste of tricky Europa League nights in volatile territory

Show/hide article…

European away days look different, sound different and feel different.

There were not many players in last night’s Saints team that would have previously performed in such a fevered atmosphere, in front of such an intimidating crowd being led by a man on temporary scaffolding with a megaphone and a band of bare chested drummers to back him up.

Added to that the temperatures, the travel, the entire package of the first away Europa League group game was something entirely new for much of the squad.

This season is a learning experience for Saints, albeit one that comes with much hope and expectation of success along the way.

The kind of welcome that awaited in Israel was something else.

The Turner Stadium, a modern marvel in the southern Israeli desert, was absolutely jumping, as well it might given Hapoel Be’er Sheva’s record of having never been defeated in just over a year at their new home.

The travelling 300 or so Saints fans that made the trip did their best but the noise coming from Hapoel’s supporters was remarkable in its volume, and under the lights, even with the daytime temperatures of 30c having cooled off, the atmosphere was red hot.

Saints got a taste of it when they came out to warm-up. Normally back home this is a serene part of the day when few fans are in the stadium, or particularly care.

The eardrum splitting jeers, boos and whistles showed that Hapoel’s supporters were going to make this as intimidating and as hostile as possible. The blaring PA system, continual club songs on loop, the giants flags were a sign of passion and tribalism.

The only thing that was not intimidating was the security. For all the fears and worries, the Israelis were welcoming to all and not overbearing. Indeed, they went out of their way to be helpful to travelling fans, most of whom were bussed straight in and out from Tel Aviv by Saints, and staff.

Add to the atmosphere the large amount of travel, and you have mixed in the perfect cocktail of tricky Europa League football.

This game was a good testing ground for the Saints squad to really get used to what they have to contend with.

Though if they progress in the tournament they may well face better sides than Be’er Sheva, they are unlikely to face a more testing trip than this, so far from home, sandwiched between two domestic away games, with the heat and the wall of noise to contend with.

It all seemed to get to Saints a little in the first half.

Their play, under Claude Puel usually so controlled and measured, was, by contrast, frantic.

A few players looked below their best, and whether it was tiredness from the travel, the heat or being caught out by the atmosphere, it wasn’t particularly good.

Too often the passing game was left to one side in favour of direct balls, but without the personnel to play that style.

Indeed, Puel, who was hopping about furiously in the technical area, took the ultimate move at his disposal by making a change after just 35 minutes by bringing off Jake Hesketh in favour of Dusan Tadic to try and wrestle some control of the game.

Be’er Sheva were fairly slick and athletic without being overly threatening.

It could have been a different story had Virgil van Dijk converted a free header from close range from James Ward-Prowse’s deep free kick just four minutes in, but he put it off target.

It was the best, and really only, chance of the entire half for either side.

Saints were better in the second period but rarely looked a serious threat to Be’er Sheva’s well drilled back five.

James Ward-Prowse threatened with a well struck drive from 20 yards six minutes after the restart but David Goresh got down to his right to save.

The rest of whatever opportunities there were fell to Be’er Sheva.

Saints were carved open on 67 minutes but with the ball running away from Maor Melikson he couldn’t hit the target.

Anthony Nwakaeme had a go from the edge of the box but put wide while Ovidiu Hoban forced Fraser Forster into his only save of note with eight minutes remaining but the Saints keeper looked fairly comfortable making the stop.

Whatever the result of this game much focus was going to come onto Puel’s decision to leave Charlie Austin, Jose Fonte, Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand back at home.

Some will argue it might have cost Saints the chance to get a win that, bearing in mind Sparta’s defeat of Inter Milan, would have given them control of the group.

But with Leicester coming up and such a long and tiring journey to Israel, he had to make decisions and stick by him.

You cannot fault Puel for being anything other than a manager of conviction in that respect, whether you agree with it or not.

Ultimately, a draw was not a bad result in Israel. However, a win at Leicester though and this would seem like a great week.

It’s the balancing act for Saints as they learn on all fronts.

There is little doubt this game was a huge part of that, in so many ways.

Puel backs Hesketh to bounce back

Show/hide article…

Jake Hesketh will bounce back from his early substitution at Hapoel Be’er Sheva, according to Claude Puel.

The 20-year-old was thrust into the Saints side to take on the Be’er Sheva in the Europa League last night after his starring role at the top of the diamond midfield against Crystal Palace in the League Cup.

However, he come under fire physically and struggled to have much of an impact, causing Puel to make the tough decision to take him off after 35 minutes and bring on Dusan Tadic.

It was vaguely reminiscent of Hesketh’s first Premier League start back in 2014 when he got clattered at Burnley and was substituted after 32 minutes.

He disappeared from Ronald Koeman’s squad after that, but Puel insists this won’t be the last Saints fans see of Hesketh in his team.

He said: “I have confidence with Jake.

“When I put him in the start of the team it’s a young player for the future but it’s important also to protect him and all the players.

“It was difficult but we will see Jake in other games and other moments and it’s not a problem.

“It was a very difficult game with pressing and with all the first half we were under pressure from the team and also the fans.

“I think I all my squad, all my team, all my players learn tonight because it was difficult conditions and I think a point is a good result.”

Puel believes that bringing Hesketh off to protect him was the best thing for the player.

“I prefer to change because it was difficult that we didn’t have the ball,” he explained.

“It was physical and I prefer to protect him and it was for me a tactical problem.

“I think it is possible if we cannot take three points away to come back with one point after this journey is ok for me.”

Saints are now in a strong position to make it through to the knockout stages of the Europa League after taking four points in their opening two games in Group K.

A double header against Inter Milan awaits but with Italians having lost both of their matches so far there is an obvious opportunity.

“I think it’s a difficult group when you can see all the teams of the group,” reckoned Puel.

“We can see the first game at home also a good team of Sparta and it was a very good performance for us in the first home game.

“Every time to win is difficult, to take points, one or three, it’s important in this mini championship.

“It’s important to keep good calm and analysis and to build our qualification.

“It’s not possible to win all the games and it’s not possible to always to dominate and have many chances so don’t take a goal and keep this point.”

Southampton assistant Eric Black implicated in corruption scandal

Show/hide article…

Eric Black, the assistant manager at Southampton, has become the latest individual to be implicated in football’s on-going corruption scandal.

Black was filmed by an undercover reporter from The Daily Telegraph while appearing to offer advice on giving bribes to officials at other clubs.

The former Sunderland and Aston Villa assistant coach allegedly claimed that “a couple of grand” would be enough to persuade others within the game to disclose information about footballers to agencies.

Black named another football coach during his conversation with the reporter, who was posing as a representative of an East Asian business firm, and claimed that it would not “take too much to get these people involved” as they do not have “an awful lot of money.”

Southampton revealed Black’s implication in the sting prior to the story’s publication.

“Southampton Football Club has today been made aware by The Daily Telegraph that, as part of their on-going investigation, the club’s assistant first team manager Eric Black will feature as part of an article in tomorrow’s paper,” the south coast club said in a statement.

“The club immediately requested to be sent, by The Daily Telegraph, the details of this article, but the newspaper declined to share any further information.

“We have today contacted The FA and The Premier League, and intend to work closely with both bodies on this matter when the facts become clear.

“Southampton Football Club is fully committed to investigating any situation that directly or indirectly relates to our club, employees or the wider community.”

Van Dijk: “I should have scored”

Show/hide article…

VIRGIL van Dijk admitted that he may have cost Saints victory against Hapoel Be’er Sheva after missing a golden opportunity in the 0-0 Europa League group stage draw in Israel.

Saints struggled to create throughout and the best chance fell to Van Dijk in the opening minutes at the Turner Stadium, writes Peter Howard.

James Ward-Prowse’s excellent delivery found him at the back-post in space, but the Saints’ captain, who took the armband in Jose Fonte’s absence, wasn’t able to direct his header on target with the goal at his mercy.

Despite the miss, the central defender was ultimately pleased with a point in a caldron atmosphere in Be’er Sheva and to record a fifth clean-sheet in a row, which kept them at the summit of Group K after two games.

“With the crowd with them it was going to be tough,” he said. “I think we started off badly and they pressed us high.

“We gave them small opportunities, so they were full of confidence.

“But I think after half an hour, I think we had more control of the game, let the ball do the work and up until the break we were dominant.

“After the break it was the same story. We started a bit sloppy and at moments we played well.

“A point over here is a good result.

“I should have scored and we would have won the game then, but that happens.”

On his chance, Van Dijk said: “It was a great ball in, obviously. I thought the goalie was coming as well, but I should have done much better than that.

“I’m okay with the feeling that we kept a clean-sheet again after a long journey. It was a tough journey as well and now our focus is on Leicester.”

Saints were without key men Fonte, Steven Davis, Ryan Bertrand and hot-form striker Austin.

But Van Dijk insists their absence was not a factor in drawing a blank in Israel.

“We have plenty of quality in the squad and I think at times we showed our qualities, especially with ball possession,” he said.

“The only thing missing tonight was a goal, but we can be satisfied with a point.”

Saints now head to Leicester on Sunday looking to keep a six successive shutout.

Who is the most exciting team in the Premier League so far this season?

Show/hide article…

Who is the most exciting team in the Premier League so far this season?

There’s another blockbuster line-up of Premier League football on Sky Sports this weekend - including the most exciting sides in the division.

It’s first vs second when Manchester City travel to Tottenham on Super Sunday, while Jurgen Klopp’s free-scoring Liverpool and in-form Arsenal are also live on Sky Sports.

But which team is the most exciting in the Premier League so far this term? We take a look at the stats…

Manchester City top the charts for goals with a huge 18 goals scored in six games. Pep Guardiola’s men have made a 100 per cent start to the season, and average three goals per game.

Liverpool are the league’s second-most prolific side, just two goals behind. However, Liverpool have also scored the joint-most goals from outside the box, firing in the same number of screamers as Burnley.

Arsenal are also a close third - with an average of 2.5 goals per game this far - with Manchester United (12), Chelsea and Tottenham (both 10) making up the top six - although Spurs are yet to score from outside the box this season.

Liverpool have created the most chances of any Premier League side this season - doing so 97 times - which coincides with their second place standing for the number of goals scored.

Tottenham and Man City follow the Reds for the number of chances created, with Guardiola’s men also hitting the woodwork the most number of times of any Premier League side, doing so on four occasions.

Southampton and Everton are also worthy inclusions after their strong starts to the season, with Chelsea level with Ronald Koeman’s men on 76 chances created to round off the top six.

Klopp’s men once again take the plaudits for this one, having the most number of shots in the Premier League this season with 117 and getting 43 of them on target - also the most in the top flight so far.

Their rivals across the park in Everton are second in terms of shots on target but have only the eighth highest number of total shots, while Man City have the third highest tally in both categories.

Southampton, Chelsea and Manchester United are all fairing similarly in terms of their shots so far this season - although the Saints could do with being more clinical with their efforts. They’ve scored just seven goals so far this season.

Some new names entering the frame for this one, with Crystal Palace making a whopping 167 crosses in just six Premier League fixtures which works out at an average of 28 per game.

Swansea and Stoke also feature, while Southampton, Manchester United and Chelsea are once again on a par in this category so far this season.

Interestingly, Liverpool have had the second-lowest number of crosses or corners - 92 - while Man City are fifth from bottom with 100 so far this season.

In terms of goals, chances and shots, Liverpool and Manchester City are certainly leading the way for the most entertaining Premier League club and you can watch them both live on Sky Sports this weekend.

Their low number of crosses and corners so far this season certainly says a lot about their style of play - preferring to play a passing game - rather than using the height of their players as teams like Crystal Palace do with the likes of Christian Benteke in their ranks.

Southampton and Everton can certainly be included in the mix - although they will want to be putting more of their chances and shots away - while Chelsea and Manchester United are all giving their fans plenty of entertainment.

Leicester City ready to continue home dominance against Southampton

Show/hide article…

Leicester City will be confident of continuing their strong home record against Southampton, especially after the tremendous albeit nervy win over Porto in the Champions League in midweek.

The Foxes have looked brittle at the back on the road thus far this season, but have been excellent at home. They haven’t lost a Premier League match since the 5-2 humbling by Arsenal in September 2015.

If the Foxes are to contend for a top-half finish or better, they must beat sides like Southampton at home. However, the visitors are capable of goals so it may be a case of which Leicester defence shows up: the one who beat Porto and kept yet another clean sheet at the King Power Stadium or the back four who conceded four first-half goals against Manchester United last weekend.

Claudio Ranieri has a couple of welcome selection dilemmas. The Leicester boss must decide whether to keep faith with right-back Luis Hernandez or restore “Mr Consistent” Danny Simpson to the starting XI. The Italian could also drop Marc Albrighton in favour of Demarai Gray – a move he made on opening day as Leicester lost 2-1 at Hull City.

It’s unlikely Ranieri will alter his strikers, even though Islam Slimani has looked more comfortable in Europe than the Premier League. Slimani, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez are quickly developing an understanding and if they click into gear, Leicester are going to be very difficult to beat at home.

This time last year a draw against Saints would have been a welcome point, but now Leicester expect maximum points from this type of game whether they are title contenders or not. City took four points off Claude Puel’s side (then under Ronald Koeman) last campaign and have the perhaps significant advantage of two extra days rest since Saints drew 0-0 with Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Israel on Thursday.

The fact Saints assistant manager Eric Black was also videoed giving undercover reporters advice on how to bribe officials at other clubs won’t help the visitors preparations.

Leicester will have watched Saints’ easy 3-0 win at West Ham, though, and will be wary of the threat that Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prowse pose.

Both sides play relatively simple yet effective football, so the pattern of the game is pretty easy to predict. It promises to be a fast and physical encounter and if the Foxes continue their clinical run in front of goal at home they will claim a morale-boosting three points and round off another superb week.

Southampton assistant Eric Black accused in Daily Telegraph sting

Show/hide article…

Southampton assistant manager Eric Black is the latest person to feature in the Daily Telegraph’s ongoing football investigations, after being accused of offering advice on bribing club officials.

The club revealed on Thursday evening that Claude Puel’s number two will feature in Friday’s article in the sting which has rocked English football.

In the video, Black is seen speaking with undercover reporters posing as representatives of a Far East firm and the Telegraph allege he advises the ‘businessmen’ how to bribe lower league staff to identify players for their fictitious agency.

Black attended the meeting at the Lime Wood Hotel in Hampshire on September 2 along with football agent Scott McGarvey, who thought he would be working to identify promising young players for the Far East firm to sign.

Earlier this week, Sam Allardyce lost his job as England boss after being filmed advising people purporting to be businessmen how to circumvent the FA’s rules on third-party ownership.

The Saints say they have contacted the Football Association and the Premier League and “intend to work closely with both bodies on this matter when the facts become clear”.

The statement said: "Southampton Football Club has today been made aware by The Daily Telegraph that, as part of their on-going investigation, the club’s Assistant First Team Manager Eric Black will feature as part of an article in tomorrow’s paper.

"The club immediately requested to be sent, by The Daily Telegraph, the details of this article, but the newspaper declined to share any further information.

"We have today contacted The FA and The Premier League, and intend to work closely with both bodies on this matter when the facts become clear.

“Southampton Football Club is fully committed to investigating any situation that directly or indirectly relates to our club, employees or the wider community.”

A spokesman for Mr Black told the Telegraph: "[Mr Black] does not recall Mr McGarvey making suggestions that football officials should be paid during transfer negotiations - this was not the purpose of the meeting so far as our client understood it.

“Any suggestion that he was complicit in such discussions is false.”

The reference to paying “a couple of grand” related to a freelance scout he suggested the Far East company should approach, the spokesman said.

Black, who served as Aston Villa caretaker manager after the departure of Remi Garde, was appointed to Southampton’s coaching staff during the summer as assistant to Puel.
