Charlie Austin leaves West Ham co-owner David Sullivan eating his words

Show/hide article…

David Sullivan may have used his silver tongue to earn West Ham a dirt-cheap Olympic stadium.

But the Hammers co-owner is also capable of putting his foot in his mouth – with last year’s suggestion that Charlie Austin has no ligaments in his right knee looking like a prime example on Sunday.

The Southampton striker, who scored one and teed up a second to extend West Ham’s miserable start to life at their new subsidised home, was linked with a move from QPR to the Hammers last summer.

But Sullivan claimed there were serious doubts over Austin’s long-term fitness, that a previous medical at Hull had been failed because Austin’s knee was in a dire state – allegations refuted as an ‘outrageous slur’ by Austin.

A fifth goal in four games afforded sweet revenge to Austin and suggested he is returning to the sort of form which earned him a call-up to the senior England squad last year, as the Saints recorded a fourth straight win in all competitions, without conceding a goal.

For West Ham, who are struggling horribly to settle into their prestigious new residence, life could hardly be more different.

West Ham’s new stadium is not a football ground - and that’s why they’re doing so poorly

They held a controlled explosion at the derelict Upton Park last week, with the old place being used as a film set before it is converted into housing.

But there have been precious few pyrotechnics over at Stratford, give or take a tear-up or two on the terraces.

The club have lost home advantage overnight, their supporters are struggling to adapt to new matchday routines and a group of players who surged into the Europa League last season are suddenly looking bereft.

Those Hammers fans who’d brought the binoculars required to have much of an idea what is going on way out in the middle will have been appalled by some of their side’s defending as Slaven Bilic’s men crumbled following Austin’s 40th-minute opener.

Those who didn’t bring visual aids will consider themselves the lucky ones.

With his side in the relegation zone after shipping 11 goals in three league games, Bilic must stop this rot soon if his job is not going to come under serious threat. And the Croat offered few excuses after this surrender.

The entertainment value had been God-awful for 40 minutes but then Austin ignited the contest with a first-time left-foot finish following some neat build-up play from Steven Davis and Ryan Bertrand, who cut back for the striker to fire home.

Nathan Redmond forced Adrian to save with his feet before the Hammers were languidly booed off at half-time.

For while previous matches here – most notably the 4-2 defeat by Watford – have been punctuated by anger and violence, there was little more than bored resignation and a longing for their former home from the Cockney support.

Puel’s men were straight back on it after the break, Dusan Tadic playing a back-heel to start a one-two with Cedric, then having a shot beaten away by Adrian.

Simone Zaza who lumbered about ineffectually up front, was booked for a shocking dive as frustrations mounted.

And the second goal on 62 minutes was a horror show for the hosts. Winston Reid and Cheikhou Kouyate were both caught dawdling close to their own box, Davis won possessionn and Redmond fed Austin, who teed up Tadic to saunter round a half-hearted Adrian and tuck home.

Dimitri Payet, a shadow of last season’s self, squandered two decent chances, West Ham shouted loudly for a penalty after a Sofiane Feghouli shot struck Bertrand on the arm and Virgil Van Dijk hacked one off the line following a melee.

But there was little flattery in the scoreline when sub James Ward-Prowse added a third in injury-time after a cut-back from Davis left Angelo Ogbonna sprawling.

“You should have stayed at the Boleyn!” sang the travelling Saints.

After three home defeats in four, the Irons must have been tempted to join in.

Austin: It’s a dream to be in this team

Show/hide article…

Southampton striker Charlie Austin hailed the team’s performance in a “massive” 3-0 victory at West Ham united.

He scored the opener with a first-time strike from Ryan Bertrand’s cutback before turning provider with a clever chipped pass for Dusan Tadic.

James Ward-Prowse made it 3-0, sealing a second successive Premier League win and a fourth on the spin in all competitions for Saints.

“You’re delighted as a striker as you just want to score goals,” Austin told saintsfc.co.uk.

“That’s what you’re credited on but look at the team we’ve got. We’re always going to create chances so it’s a dream!”

After guiding his side to victory at London Stadium, Southampton manager Claude Puel told saintsfc.co.uk: “We scored three good goals and we didn’t take a goal against us, which is always important. The defence and the attack is the work of all the team.

“All of the team defend and all of the players attack. If we respect this for the future, we can make something very good.”

Match In A Minute: West Ham 0-3 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Jamie Redknapp gives his verdict on Southampton’s 3-0 victory over West Ham in his Match In A Minute.

It was another bad day at the office for the Hammers, who suffered their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat at the hands of the confident Saints.

The in-form Charlie Austin - who scored his fifth goal in four games in all competitions - broke the deadlock in the 40th minute before Dusan Tadic doubled the tally just after the hour mark.

It was James Ward-Prowse who dealt the final blow two minutes into injury time to round off the scoring, and ensure West Ham lost five of their opening six Premier League ties for the first time in their history.

Redknapp was on hand to provide the punditary on Super Sunday live on Sky Sports, and gave his verdict on his man of the match and best moment among other things during his Match In A Minute.

Mark Noble savages ‘laughable’ West Ham defending after Southampton defeat

Show/hide article…

Captain Mark Noble has savaged West Ham United’s recent performances and admitted that the team’s “laughable” defending could have resulted in an even heavier defeat against Southampton.

A 3-0 loss is the heaviest margin of defeat at the club’s new London Stadium and is also the club’s fourth straight Premier League reverse but Noble admitted that Southampton could have won the game 6-0. It followed 4-2 defeats against Watford and West Bromwich Albion. “It all blends into one - the start we had,” said Noble.

"Eleven goals in three games is laughable and it’s not good enough. I think we could have kept playing until tonight and we wouldn’t have scored. I thought we started all right and then ‘bang’ we conceded a goal and, to be honest, we never looked back in it. If I’m honest it could have been six in the end. Adrian pulled off some good saves and on the bright side, I don’t think it can get any worse.”

West Ham 0-3 Southampton: Why full-backs were key for superb Saints

Show/hide article…

Things seem to be going from bad to worse for West Ham, who looked all over the place at the back as they lost 3-0 at home to Southampton.

But when I analyse how a game has been won and lost for MOTD2, I always look at it from the positive side first and, for all of West Ham’s problems, Saints put in an excellent attacking performance.

This is how the game was won.

Southampton’s full-backs, Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares, held the key. Both were superb at getting forward - Bertrand in particular in the first half, and Cedric after the break.

Bertrand was causing problems for West Ham’s wide midfielders - Michail Antonio and, occasionally, Dimitri Payet, who switched sides from time to time - through his willingness to run beyond them and go at Hammers right-back Havard Nordtveit.

That gave Saints a great attacking outlet, and it was Bertrand who created their opening goal with a brilliant overlapping run that saw him get in behind Nordtveit and pull the ball back for Charlie Austin to score from a great cross.

Austin’s goal came from his only shot, which tells you a lot about the role he was playing for his team.

Austin did a lot of running without getting much of the ball in open play - he had the fewest touches of any outfield player from either starting XI.

But, by doing a lot of selfless work, he stretched play, occupied West Ham centre-halves Angelo Ogbonna and Winston Reid, and freed up space for Nathan Redmond and Dusan Tadic.

Behind that trio, Southampton were disciplined in the middle of the pitch and solid at the back, with Oriol Romeu sitting in front of their centre-halves, Virgil van Dijk and Jose Fonte.

Van Dijk made 16 clearances, as many as the entire West Ham back four between them, which shows how dependable he was.

The Netherlands international, who cost £13m when he joined from Celtic just over 12 months ago, looks like a superb signing, especially because of his partnership with Fonte, who has had a few different centre-half partners in his six and a half years at Saints, but is a reassuring presence in their back four.

I think we are starting to see what this Southampton team is made of under Claude Puel, but we are still waiting for West Ham to show any signs of the sort of form they showed under Slaven Bilic last season.

The manner of this defeat was typical of the performances we have seen from the Hammers in 2016-17 - they sat off, did not take the game to their opponents, failed to pose much of a threat and struggled defensively.

You can trace their problems from front to back, starting with Simone Zaza’s inability to stretch Southampton’s defence in the manner Austin did at the other end.

I saw quite a lot of Zaza for Juventus last season, and Sassuolo before that, and although he works hard he never looks like he is going to hurt teams by getting in behind them.

The knock-on effect of him working in front of the two centre-halves was there was no room for Manuel Lanzini or Payet to find little pockets of space.

Payet is not one for tracking back anyway, and although Antonio is a willing worker down the flank he is guilty of switching off sometimes - as happened against Saints. Both were poor at tracking the Southampton full-backs.

That left Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate with too much work to cover, and the West Ham defence was a little bit exposed. As a back four, they did not look comfortable.

West Ham’s approach from the start was more ‘let’s not be beaten’ than ‘let’s go and win the game’. They seemed too happy trying to contain Southampton.

In my mind, from the way they set up, they should have been saying this was the game where they made a real statement at their new home, because they have not managed it yet.

I also watched their only Premier League win at the London Stadium, against Bournemouth last month, but that was not a performance to get them up and running. It was more a case they got away with it that day, something they have not managed again in their four league defeats since.

Confidence - or lack of it - is a huge factor for them at the moment when they play at home because they have not managed a good performance there yet.

That is why they are coming out and looking a bit intimidated in home games at the moment. There does not seem much forward movement, and there is certainly no penetration.

I still think Bilic will get it right, and also that his squad is good enough to be much higher up the table, but what he needs at the moment is a positive result anywhere as much as a stand-out performance at home.

From experience, I know that all the negatives that come with a bad run like this one vanish when you get a win, and it does not matter how.

What West Ham need more than anything is a victory, even a scrappy one, to give everyone at the club a lift. The longer this run continues, the harder it will get.

Jon Moss isn’t respected by players… he can’t control a game

Show/hide article…

In a relatively straightforward game the Wearside referee struggled to maintain control with virtually every decision being disputed and challenged.

The fact Moss cautioned seven players, five of them from West Ham, in a game without a nasty tackle showed how he failed to manage the match.

Even when he got decisions correct, waving aside Simone Zaza’s appeal for a penalty after diving being a case in point, the players appeared incredulous.

To be fair to the players there were times when it was hard to fathom what was a foul and what wasn’t according to Moss.

To counter that there was so much exaggeration of the slightest of contacts - Dusan Tadic and Dimitri Payet were two of the guilty players - that Moss’ job was almost impossible.

West Ham players went to ground looking for penalties at every opportunity and unfortunately when they finally deserved one, for a handball by Ryan Bertrand, Moss was unsighted.

When players respect referees they accept that good referees can miss incidents; when they don’t they just think the referee is a bad one.

Superb Southampton at their best in commanding win at West Ham

Show/hide article…

Superb Southampton produced their most impressive performance under manager Claude Puel’s guidance to thrash woeful West Ham 3-0 and move into the top half of the Premier League table.

In-form striker Charlie Austin scored a fifth goal in four games to break the deadlock before half-time at the end of an excellent team move before turning provider for Dusan Tadic for the second early in the second half. Substitute James Ward-Prowse crowned a comprehensive and deserved victory in stoppage time with a first goal since January after another free-flowing break.

But for West Ham goalkeeper Adrian, the victory would have been even more commanding.

After a slow start to the season, Southampton’s players finally seem to have come to terms with Puel’s midfield diamond, with Tadic and full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Cedric Soares in particular revelling in their newfound freedom. Austin appears to be back to the form that took him to the cusp of an England cap two years ago and as well as scoring is now creating chances for his teammates.

Bertrand and Nathan Redmond showed a great understanding down the left, catching out the West Ham defence time and again. The defence is looking rock solid after keeping four successive clean sheets during the winning run.

None. It would be churlish to pick out any negatives from an ultra-impressive all-round team display.

9 – Puel’s biggest judgement call was whether to start Shane Long or Austin up front, and his decision to choose the latter to partner the lively Redmond was fully justified by a goal and assist. The Frenchman also made the right substitutions at the right time, sacrificing a tiring Austin to utilise Long’s pace to hit West Ham on the counter-attack and with Ward-Prowse popping up with a rare goal soon after his introduction.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Fraser Forster, 6 – Did not have to make a save worthy of the name but commanded his area well and took control of the back four. Confidence seems to have been restored after three successive shutouts following a run of 15 Premier League games without one.

DF Cedric Soares, 8 – Cuco Martina can count himself unlucky to lose his place to Cedric after another standout performance against Crystal Palace in midweek. The Portugal Euro 2016 winner responded to the threat in his place with his most competent showing of the season. Provided a great attacking outlet as well as doing his defensive duties.

DF Jose Fonte, 7 – After a shaky start to the campaign, Fonte is beginning to get back to his best. Rock solid alongside Virgil van Dijk to limit West Ham to few scoring chances.

DF Virgil van Dijk, 9 – Brilliant as he has been all season. Headed away every cross the home side flung into the penalty area and made sure Italy striker Simone Zaza was totally anonymous. Provided the perfect platform for the win.

DF Ryan Bertrand, 9 – Admitted after the Palace game he is still not 100 percent fit but try telling that to any of the West Ham players he left in his wake. Superb at the back and motored up and down the left flank in tandem with Redmond.

MF Oriol Romeu, 7 – Had to keep his nose clean after picking up an early yellow card but that did not affect his focus and concentration. A great shield for the back four and dominated the West Ham midfield.

MF Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, 8 – The cultured former Bayern Munich midfielder is already loved by the Southampton fans and announced himself on the wider public with a brilliant display. Playing on the right of the diamond he covered every blade of grass at the lush London Stadium.

MF Steven Davis, 7 – Should have done better with a shot he sliced over the crossbar but showed great composure to set up Ward-Prowse fir his goal.

MF Dusan Tadic, 8 – Linked up brilliantly with man-of-the-moment Austin and played a big part in the opening goal with a defence-splitting pass to free Bertrand down the left before scoring the second himself.

FW Charlie Austin, 8 – Took his goal superbly and his assist for Tadic’s effort was sublime.

FW Nathan Redmond, 7 – Dragged the much-maligned West Ham back four all over the pitch. Never stopped running.

FW Shane Long, NR – Used his pace to exploit West Ham on the counter-attack. Needs a goal.

MF James Ward-Prowse, NR – Finish for his goal was emphatic.
