West Ham 0-3 Southampton - PLAYER RATINGS

Show/hide article…

Southampton inflicted yet another defeat on West Ham at the London Stadium as Slaven Bilic’s men showed no signs of emerging from their slump.

Charlie Austin gave Claude Puel’s side the lead with a lovely guided effort just before the interval and then turned provider for Dusan Tadic, who danced away from the onrushing Adrian to slot coolly into the net.

James Ward-Prowse added a third in stoppage time to heap further misery on the troubled Hammers.

Sportsmail’s ADAM CRAFTON was at the London Stadium to run the rule over the players’ performances.

Might have done better for the first two Southampton goals but at least redeemed himself to an extent with an excellent stop to deny Tadic at the beginning of the second half.

Left exposed as Ryan Bertrand escaped down the left for the first goal but made one crucial block in the second half as Southampton threatened to add a third.

Improved the West Ham defence after absence last week at West Brom but still major problems back there.

Strong and effective when the game’s played in front of him; less responsive to smart and fast movement and caught out for the second goal.

Struggled to cope with forward bursts from Southampton’s full back Cedric on his first Premier League appearance since 2009.

Crucially lost possession inside his own half to begin the comedy of errors that brought about Southampton’s second goal.

Cautioned for a late challenge but missing his usual authority in the midfield on his 250th appearance for the club.

Unable to continue a run of five goals from his last four starts in the Premier League on a frustrating afternoon. Lost his man for the third Saints goal.

Substituted at half-time as Bilic looked to alter the course of the game. Slightly peculiar as he did more than most to contribute to West Ham’s attempt at a fightback at West Brom last week.

Usual bright touches but not influencing games in the same manner as last season as West Ham toil.

Substituted at half-time last week and offered little once more. Should have been booked for diving in the second half. Was instead cautioned for moaning about not receiving a penalty after that very same incident.

Injected a bit more pace and energy into West Ham but little by way of end product.

Late throw of the dice as Bilic sought to change the flow of the game but had no real chances.

Little to do in terms of saves and commanding from set-pieces.

Rapid and intelligent runs in behind caused West Ham problems down his right flank.

Straightforward afternoon for the Saints skipper, who is among the most assured defenders in the league these days.

Powerful and dominant in the air and bright on the ball. His foray into midfield helped disrupt West Ham’s balance in the build-up to the first goal. Vital clearance off the line in the second half.

Speedy burst in behind for the first goal but fortunate not to concede a penalty for handball in the second half.

Read the game superbly in front of Southampton’s back-four and composed in possession. Making the holding position his own this season.

Could have done better when an opportunity presented itself in the first half but another positive display from the former Bayern Munich midfielder.

Unassuming but effective in the midfield. Has picked up from where he left off at the end of last season and provided a super assist for the third goal.

Lovely shimmy and finish for the goal. Could have had two if it were not for smart Adrian reflexes.

Continues to make positive strides in a central role but few sights of goal on this occasion.

Five goals in 10 days and a lovely assist for Tadic’s crucial second. Might be edging his way into the England reckoning.

Helped Southampton maintain threat on the break late on and had a simple finish for the late goal.

Irishman still to score this season and may have to play second fiddle to the in-form Austin.

The official should have awarded West Ham a penalty in the second half but otherwise little of note.

‘You should’ve stayed at the Boleyn’ - Southampton fans troll West Ham

Show/hide article…

West Ham’s disappointing start to life at London Stadium continued as Southampton secured a 3-0 victory in east London on Sunday.

Charlie Austin, Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prose did the damage as the Hammers slipped to a fifth defeat in six Premier League matches and failed to haul themselves out of the top flight drop zone.

Ward-Prowse’s stoppage-time effort prompted a mass exodus at London Stadium as home fans headed for the exits ahead of the full-time whistle.

And the jubilant visiting fans taunted the hosts with chants of: “You should’ve stayed at the Boleyn!”

Some West Ham fsupporters expressed their agreement with the chimes coming from the away end as they came to terms with a second straight top flight defeat at their new home.

Pundit Thierry Henry then suggested on Sky Sports that the stadium move was behind West Ham’s slow start to the new campaign.

5 things we learned from West Ham 0-3 Southampton

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin had West Ham fans longing for their former Upton Park fortress once more as the Southampton striker scored one and laid on another to keep Slaven Bilic’s men in the Premier League relegation zone.

The Hammers suffered a third defeat in their last four ‘home’ matches at the Olympic Stadium – with the only victory during that run coming courtesy of a 96th-minute winner against Accrington Stanley – as the Saints exposed some serious flaws in Slaven Bilic’s side.

Austin’s fifth goal in four matches will have been especially sweet, as Hammers co-chairman David Sullivan had suggested that the striker might not have had any ligaments in one of his knees after the East End club had been linked with trying to sign him last last year.

Austin refuted that claim as an ‘outrageous slur’ and then rammed home a first-time finish in the 40 minute to leave the Hammers being booed off at half-time.

Dusan Tadic then rounded keeper Adrian after some shocking West Ham defending had gifted possession to the Saints, with Austin supplying the final pass.

And James Ward-Prowse added a third in injury-time as Claude Puel’s men earned a fourth straight victory, and a fourth successive clean sheet, in all competitions.

Here are 5 things we learned:

The French midfielder was short-listed for PFA Player of the Year last term but here his dead-ball delivery deserted him and when he lost control horribly to gift possession to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg early in the second half, it seemed to sum up West Ham.

West Ham’s on-loan Juventus striker may find Premier League referees are hotter than those in Serie A at clamping down on diving.

His horrible piece of play-acting, when he fell over Oriol Romeu, was rightly rewarded with a booking by referee Jon Moss.

When even Winston Reid is caught dawdling close to the edge of his own area – as the New Zealander was in the build-up to Southampton’s second – then Slaven Bilic, once a no-nonsense defender himself, really has got some serious work to do on the training ground.

The former hod carrier and non-league striker earned a call-up the England squad 16 months ago but was never capped. A fifth goal in four games suggests the big man could be in the shake-up to replace the injured Harry Kane when Sam Allardyce names his squad next week ? To face Malta and Slovenia.

Southampton have been outstanding in their managerial appointments in recent years but a slow start under Frenchman Puel led to a few question marks.

But they dominated for large periods here, with some polished passing football, for a second win in as many Sundays – and kept a fourth straight clean sheet in all competitions.

West Ham 0-3 Southampton: Hammers fall to fourth successive Premier League defeat

Show/hide article…

West Ham fell to a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat on Sunday afternoon as they were beaten 3-0 by Southampton.

Slaven Bilic had made just two changes from the 4-2 defeat to West Brom last weekend, but went behind in the 40th minute after the in-form Charlie Austin scored his fifth goal in four games in all competitions for the Saints.

The visitors then doubled their lead just after the hour mark as Dusan Tadic nicked past goalkeeper Adrian and tapped into an open net before James Ward-Prowse rounded off the scoring in the second minute of injury time.

West Ham remain in the relegation places, sitting in 18th on three points, while Southampton move up to ninth with eight points after their victory.

The first half was a mostly quiet affair with neither side having many clear-cut chances, although West Ham did have a penalty appeal turned down in the 17th minute when Simone Zaza went down under pressure from Cedric Soares but referee Jon Moss waved away the calls.

Twenty minutes later, the first chance of the half emerged as Dimitri Payet knocked in a corner that was headed on by Zaza at the near post and looked destined for Michail Antonio, but he couldn’t get to the ball in time and it flashed across the face of the goal.

But Southampton broke the deadlock with five minutes of the half to play, as Steven Davis found Tadic on the left flank who in turn played in an onrushing Bertrand. The defender then crossed for Austin, who made no mistake in sliding home to score in his fourth consecutive game in all competitions.

Southampton could have had a second just before half-time, with Nathan Redmond forcing a save from the West Ham goalkeeper before Cedric smashed the side netting with a close-range effort.

The visitors, buoyed by their late first-half goal, started well in the second half with Adrian again called into action, saving from a looping Jose Fonte header before Tadic tried his luck - but the Serb could only find the feet of the Hammers stopper.

West Ham had a second penalty appeal waved away by referee Moss and Zaza was the felled man once again, although Oriol Romeu just pulled out of the tackle as the striker went down leading to a simulation booking for the Italian.

Southampton doubled their lead in the 62nd minute, as Redmond won the ball from Cheikhou Kouyate and found Austin, who took one touch to chip the ball into the path of Tadic. The midfielder then rounded the onrushing Adrian and stroked home into an open net.

But the Hammers had their chances to get back into the game, with the subdued Payet poking an effort off target after a great break from Antonio, before Virgil van Dijk cleared an effort from Zaza off the line.

Adrian continued to face pressure from the Saints though, keeping out stinging efforts from Ward-Prowse and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg but he couldn’t stop a second effort from the former. Redmond picked out a gut-busting run from Davis into the box, who knocked the ball into the path of Ward-Prowse and he obliged by slotting it into the back of the net.

It rounded off another bad day at the office for West Ham, who have now lost five of their opening six Premier League games for the first time in their history.

West Ham 0-3 Southampton: Austin on fire as Saints thrash the Hammers

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin increased the doom at West Ham with his fifth goal in four games as Saints ran out 3-0 winners at the London Stadium.

The unhappy Hammers remain in the bottom three after yet more woeful defending saw them slip to a fifth defeat in six Premier League matches.

And just to rub West Ham’s noses in it the man who set Saints on their way was Austin, the player Hammers co-owner David Sullivan once claimed that he did not try to sign because of his injury record.

But Austin did not look like a player who has no ligaments in his knee - as it was said back then - when he opened the scoring five minutes before half-time.

The striker then set up Dusan Tadic to tuck away the second and James Ward-Prowse added the gloss to give Southampton a first away win of the season and leave West Ham in near meltdown.

The Hammers are confident that some good performances on the pitch will ease some of the resentment in the stands caused by their move from Upton Park to the London Stadium - but this was no way to go about it.

In a dismal first half Simone Zaza, yet to score since his summer switch from Juventus, and Michail Antonio both fired tamely wide.

And having soaked up what little pressure West Ham threw at them, Saints simply wandered down the other end of the field and opened the scoring with their first shot on target.

The Hammers, who conceded eight goals in their previous two league outings, allowed Ryan Bertrand to collect Tadic’s pass as he raced inside makeshift right-back Havard Nordtveit and cut the ball back for Austin to slot home.

The visitors could have increased their lead before half-time but Adrian saved Nathan Redmond’s drive at his near post and Cedric Soares fired into the sidenetting.

Zaza’s frustration continued when, having been denied what he felt was a penalty in the first half, was booked for a dive after tumbling under Oriol Romeu’s challenge in the area.

Then, in the 62nd minute, more shambolic defending saw Winston Reid and Cheikhou Kouyate lose the ball between them, allowing Austin to slip in Tadic who stepped around the onrushing Adrian before rolling the ball into an empty net.

West Ham belatedly rallied and had another penalty claim turned down when Sofiane Feghouli’s shot hit Bertrand’s hand, while Zaza’s effort was legitimately cleared off the line by the defender.

But in stoppage time Redmond and Steven Davis combined to set up sub Ward-Prowse, and prompt a mass exodus of Hammers fans.

Those who did stay until the end made their feelings known on another miserable afternoon at their new home.

Who impressed during Southampton’s 3-0 victory at the London Stadium?

Show/hide article…

Southampton reaffirmed the impending sense of doom at West Ham as they cruised to a 3-0 victory at the London Stadium.

The Hammers continue to languish in the bottom three after more woeful defending saw them slip to a fifth defeat in six Premier League matches.

This is the side’s third straight defeat at their new stadium which has so far failed to emulate the atmosphere of the old ground.

Slaven Bilic’s side were pitiful - they have conceded 14 in their last four league games - and Southampton could have won by more.

It was the visitors, instead, who looked most at home at West Ham’s new stadium as Charlie Austin, Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prose all ran riot.

Austin opened the scoring five minutes before half-time and went on to assist Tadic for the second.

Ward-Prowse added a third in injury time to give Southampton a first away win of the season and take them up to ninth in the table.

The Hammers are confident that some good performances on the pitch will ease some of the resentment in the stands caused by their move from Upton Park to the London Stadium - but this was certainly no way to go about it.

So how did the two teams fare? See the gallaery above for our player ratings.

West Ham 0-3 Southampton: Puel takes pleasure in Saints win

Show/hide article…

Saints manager Claude Puel said it was “a pleasure” to watch his side’s second half performance at West Ham which made it four wins on the spin.

Puel wasn’t happy with the start of Saints’ first ever visit to the London Stadium, but was smiling by the end of it as his team ran out 3-0 winners to move up to ninth in the Premier League.

After being unable to find a win in his first four games in charge, things have changed around quickly for Puel with four wins in a row in all competitions creating a real feeling of momentum ahead of the Europa League trip to Israel which now awaits.

He said: “It is a pleasure to see my players when they enjoy and they can practise good football, but I think with all these many chances to score it is difficult to stay just with one goal. It’s dangerous.

“It was important to score the second goal and I think it’s important to have many chances but also to score a little more as it’s a little difficult for me.”

Despite all the positives, Puel was clearly unimpressed by how his side went about things in the opening stages of the game and was glad it didn’t end up costing them.

“I think a good second half. Our first half was difficult,” he admitted.

“It was not good play for us and it was important to come back in the second half with all the things and second half we can see a team and players with a good technical level and quality on the ground.

“After many chances we need a solution to score and this is important and first half we were a little nervous at the start of the game and we lost the ball quickly and it was important in the second half to correct this.”

Puel was at something of a loss to explain why his side were nervous, and could only put it down to a first visit to the London Stadium.

“I don’t know because I think perhaps with a good support of the fans of West Ham perhaps, a great stadium,” he reckoned.

“I think it’s a little difficult for the opponent and I don’t know but it was important to correct this and very interesting for this because we can see with the bad start it was important to see in the second half with good energy.”

West Ham 0-3 Southampton plater ratings: Which Hammer did we give a THREE?

Show/hide article…

West Ham 's miserable start to the season continued with a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Southampton at the London Stadium on Sunday.

Charlie Austin made sure David Sullivan’s remarks about his lack of knee ligaments came back to bite him with a goal and an assist for the Saints as they capitalised on some lacklustre defending.

The in-form striker rammed home a first-time finish just before half time for his fifth goal in four matches, before setting up Dusan Tadic for the second with just over an hour played.

James Ward-Prowse then grabbed a third in stoppage time to pile the pressure on the man who could do no wrong last season, Slaven Bilic .

Here’s how Dave Kidd rated the performances on both sides at the London Stadium.

Adrian 5 : Limp effort to cut off the second goal. Left exposed at times.

Nordtveit 6 : The Norewegian right-back was far from the worst of a bad bunch.

Reid 5 : Uncharacteristic and costly faffing about in the build-up to Tadic’s goal.

Ogbonna 6 : A few decent blocks from the former Juventus man as West Ham were overwhelmed.

Arbeloa 5 : Moved from right-back to left-back and could do little to withstand pressure.

Noble (booked) 5: The skipper failed to get the midfield tacking and booked for a badly mistimed tackle.

Kouyate 4 : Had a shocker in build-up to second goal. Largely clueless.

Antonio 6 : At least he had a bit of dynamism – but no end product this time.

Lanzini 4 : One cross which went straight out of play summed up first half. Hooked at the break.

Payet (booked) 4 : His shooting, dead-ball delivery and basic control all deserted him.

Subs : Feghouli (for Lanzini, 46 min, 5), Fletcher (for Nordtveit, 71 min, 5), Fernandes (for Noble, 82 min, 5)

Forster 6 : Had virtually nothing to do. Will rarely be quieter away from home.

Cedric 6 : Used the ball well and got forward down the right flank.

Fonte 7 : A proper none-shall-pass centre-half, no wonder Jose Mourinho wanted him.

Van Dijk 7 : Shaky start but grew immensely. Goal-line clearance was important at 2-0.

Bertrand 7 : Solid early on, then showed good endeavour and assisted for the opener.

Romeu (booked) 6 : Not the most inventive in the anchor role but steady enough.

Hojbjerg 7 : Lively in the middle of the park, helped over

Davis 7 : Played a part in all three goals, such a good team man.

Tadic 7 : Cool finish for the second after having a hand in the first.

Austin (MOTM) 8 : Scored one, made one – with or without knee ligaments.

Subs : Long (for Austin, 74 mins, 6), Ward-Prowse (for Tadic, 80 min, 7), Martina (for Cedric, 89 min, 5)

Southampton striker Charlie Austin shows West Ham’s owners exactly what they’re missing

Show/hide article…

Austin, who also created the second goal, said: “We had a slow start to the season but we have certainly got the ball rolling. You ask any striker, when they’re on a hot streak you want the games to keep coming. When you are playing with players like Dusan Tadic and the others we’ve got and you’re putting the ball in the net it’s like a dream."

It was Southampton’s fourth straight win and comfortably their best all-round performance since the appointment as manager of Claude Puel. “Our first half was not interesting - it was not good football from us,” said Puel. “We seemed a little nervous at the start and it was important to correct this. All of the team defend and all of the players attack. If we respect this for the future, we can make something very good.”

Puel is especially pleased at how his team now seem to have adapted to the diamond formation he has employed following the 4-2-3-1 system under Ronald Koeman. “It was very interesting for all the players to respect the identity of our play,” he said.

Claude Puel: Southampton ‘respect’ key to win at West Ham

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel felt his side showed more “respect” in the second half as they went on to sink woeful West Ham 3-0 on Sunday at the London Stadium.

The Saints took the lead through Charlie Austin in the 40th minute before second-half goals from Dusan Tadic and James Ward-Prowse condemned the Hammers to a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat.

The win moves Southampton up to ninth spot in the league table with eight points under their belt and Puel believes his team are showing progress, having secured four consecutive wins without conceding.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Frenchman said: "I think our first half was very difficult. It was not good football from us, but we could see in the second half a good team with a good player in goal and many chances.

“We lost the ball very quickly (in the first half) and it was difficult to put the ball in the goal. I think sometimes we didn’t respect our game and it’s very interesting, the second half, to see the correction from my players and I’m happy for my players because they have been rewarded.”

The 55-year-old expressed the importance of Southampton’s second goal, admitting the 1-0 lead was not comfortable for the visitors.

He added: "The second goal is fantastic.

"At first, the second didn’t come and it’s always dangerous - (they have) Payet and because of chances for your opponent, it’s important to score the second goal.

"We have to improve on the game and to correct, to progress together and this is very important to keep a good humility, every time in the training sessions.

“We play many games and all the squad participate very well. I think, for the future, the squad will be strong.”
