West Ham turn in another shambolic display at new home in Saints loss

Show/hide article…

West Ham conceded another three goals in a shambolic display that left fans frustrated, angry and puzzled.

New stadium or not, there can be no excuse for the awful exhibition against Southampton. Saints made the most of what they faced and the 3-0 victory at the London Stadium could have been easily doubled, but there’s no doubt most Premier League sides would have made hay against the Hammers’ inept defending.

The confidence has leaked from the team at an alarming rate and has even started to affect Dimitri Payet. There was little to encourage fans at either end of the pitch and, at this rate, the club face a torrid winter.

The first 40 minutes when, despite creating little, the Hammers briefly looked as if they might compete at some level. It’s not much but there’s little else to hang on to.

Where to start? Bereft of confidence, West Ham managed to make an fairly ordinary Southampton side look like 1970 Brazil. It’s difficult to see how this is going to turn around without an emergency injection of personnel.

3 – As Slaven Bilic said post-match that he’d already taken the team back to basics, it raises the question where else he can take them. It is his failure to sort out the creaking defence during the transfer window that is at the heart of the problem.

Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):

GK Adrian, 6 – A series of decent saves kept the score to merely embarrassing. It’s always a bad day when a keeper concedes three but was probably the only bright spot.

DF Havard Nordtveit, 4 – Injuries mean Nordtveit isn’t able to play in his natural position; a shame as the team desperately need a defensive midfielder.

DF Winston Reid, 5 – Reid’s confidence has plummeted with the team’s form, but the New Zealander is the lynchpin that the defence needs to be built around.

DF Angelo Ogbonna, 5 – The Italian is one of those players who needs to impose himself more, but is he capable or willing?

DF Alvaro Arbeloa, 4 – Struggled with Southampton’s bursts of pace and must be left wondering what he’s let himself in for.

MF Mark Noble, 5 – Noble’s post-match interview revealed a man confused, upset and unsure of what to do. His demeanour spoke volumes.

MF Cheikhou Kouyate, 5 – Early on, the Senegalese international looked as if he may have found his usual driving style, but Kouyate was one of those at fault for the second goal and faded with the rest.

MF Manuel Lanzini, 4 – Wasn’t able to get into the match and was substituted at half-time.

MF Michail Antonio, 5 – Antonio was at sea for Southampton’s third goal, but as he seems to be the player used to fill every position, it’s hardly surprising that he doesn’t know where he should be.

MF Dimitri Payet, 6 – Southampton did a good job on Payet and gave him little room. The depressing thing was the Frenchman wasn’t able to counter.

FW Simone Zaza, 3 – To think that David Gold thought that Charlie Austin wasn’t worth the money yet sanctioned a loan deal for Zaza.

MF Ashley Fletcher, NR – Replaced Nordtveit on 71 minutes but little more than a gesture at that stage.

MF Sofiane Feghouli, 5 – On for Lanzini at half-time but things are so bad up front, his wing play contributes little.

West Ham Player Ratings: Zaza has yet another shocker as Saints demolish Hammers

Show/hide article…

The Hammers were turned over on their own patch yet again as their defence crumbled at the hands of Claude Puel’s side.

But Slaven Bilic’s side produced very little going forward this time round, either.

The 3-0 loss was a truly disastrous result for the east London side, but who was most to blame for the defeat?

THE VERDICT: Austin key to winning Saints

Show/hide article…

While football is a team game, few sides ever did anything significant without a goalscorer.

That player who has the handy knack of producing goals is a key individual in a team sport.

They of course cannot create and score on their own, but without them the chances of success are greatly diminished.

It’s sometimes hard to really explain exactly what it is that they possess, how they find it so simple to put the ball in the net so often when other, possibly more skilful players cannot.

But whatever that little extra is, whether it be physical or mental, it is a valuable commodity. It’s why teams pay so much in the search for a goalscorer.

Saints have had an obvious talisman during the success they have enjoyed in recent years.

Rickie Lambert started it all, then handed over to Graziano Pelle.

Now it is the turn of Charlie Austin.

There are times when you see him trying to get back to provide whatever help he can wide in midfield when you wonder whether Claude Puel’s system really fits him as best it could, when what you really want is him in the box.

But you cannot argue with the fact he has got himself there enough times to hit a prolific run of form.

Saints’ goalscorer now has five in his last four games, and his importance cannot be underestimated. It’s also why he keeps playing around two-thirds of a game before being withdrawn to try and get him into the team for every game during this demanding run of fixtures.

Puel said last week that by the end of the season he hoped that 14 or 15 different players would have scored for Saints over the course of this Premier League season.

After six games there have been five, plus an own goal.

It’s a good aim to have, but even so having somebody who buries chances with incredible regularity is still so vital.

Austin popped up again with an important goal out of nowhere, which provided the catalyst for Saints to continue their fine recent form with a first win on the road in the Premier League this season at West Ham.

There is no doubt the Hammers are struggling to come to terms with life in the London Stadium, an impressive place for a football ground but so cavernous and with spectators so far away from the pitch that it struggles for atmosphere.

West Ham looked like a team lacking in confidence, and indeed played more like an away outfit than a confident home side.

They were prepared to sit deep and allow Saints their patient build-up play from the back while trying to use their pace on the counter attack. That suited Saints fine, who for their part look like they understand the diamond formation far better now.

A pretty uninspiring start to the match came to an end as Austin put Saints ahead five minutes before half time.

Dusan Tadic fed the ball inside to Ryan Bertrand overlapping down the left.

He cut it back to Austin 12 yards out whose first time left footed shot wasn’t struck particularly cleanly but had pinpoint accuracy meaning Adrian couldn’t prevent it going into the bottom corner.

Saints suddenly looked buoyed with confidence, and West Ham the opposite, and they might have had another before half time as Nathan Redmond forced Adrian to save at his near post while Cedric Soares thrashed an effort into the side netting.

Saints came out looking assured at the start of the second period and Tadic should have done better with his first time effort from Cedric’s cut back which gave Adrian the chance to make a save.

They was no denying Tadic on 62 minutes as Austin turned provider.

West Ham were loose in possession, but Saints were not, winning the ball back cheaply before Nathan Redmond fed it in to Austin, who flicked it round the corner to Tadic whose drop of the shoulder committed Adrian and left him to roll the ball into the empty net.

Steven Davis might have added another but side footed over the bar from the edge of the box after being found by Redmond as rampant Saints launched wave after wave of attack.

Moments later Davis ignored Austin and tried to go it alone when presented with a sniff of a chance in the box but his shot was blocked.

West Ham briefly rallied with optimistic shouts for a penalty as Sofiane Feghouli drilled the ball into the arm of Ryan Bertrand from just a couple of yards, Dimitri Payet side footed wide from the edge of the area and Virgil van Dijk was in the right place at the right time to clear off the line after a goalmouth scramble.

But it was Saints who looked more likely to get another with Adrian saving at his near post from Redmond, diving to save a driven shot from James Ward-Prowse and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg going close.

Saints did eventually bag a third in stoppage time as they walked through the Hammers backline with embarrassing ease before Davis presented Ward-Prowse with a fairly simple chance to convert from eight yards out.

The goals, and the wins, just keep on flowing.

Southampton reaping the rewards of “believing” in Puel

Show/hide article…

STEVEN Davis believes that Saints are reaping the rewards of buying into Claude Puel’s football philosophy after four straight wins in all competitions.

Davis reckons he’s seen an improvement in every game and, after a slow start, Puel’s style is starting to click with the players.

Saints have now won back-to-back Premier League games – their latest a 3-0 win at West Ham – and won consecutive cup matches in the Europa League and EFL Cup.

“It was always going to take a bit of time, but whenever you get off to a slow start of course you question things,” Davis said. “But it was important that the manager showed us his philosophy and showed us how he wants to do things.

“It’s important that the lads bought into that and you can see that now after the four wins on the bounce and we can seeing everyone’s believing in it.

“There’s confidence in the team and we’re getting back to where we should be.”

“We’ve seen an improvement in each game. Obviously it was going take a bit of time to get used to the new system and I think we’re adapting to it well now and understanding our roles and responsibilities a bit better.”

He added: “Every manager’s different, everybody’s got their own philosophies, how they want to play and their own personalities.

“The new manager is no different from that. He’s his own man, he demands certain ways and we are reaping the rewards of our work on the training ground.”

One of the trademarks of Puel’s tenure so far has been squad rotation, which according to Davis is keeping everyone sharp.

“It keeps everyone on their toes,” he said. “Everybody’s done well and it goes for the same in the league. Everybody put in a good performance.

“There’s good healthy competition. Everyone wants to play but that’s not always possible.”

The upturn in fortunes in the Premier League means Saints can now fully focus on their Europa League campaign.

After a 3-0 win in their first European Group K game against Sparta Prague, Saints prepare to travel to Hapoel Beer Sheva, the Israeli champions, on Thursday.

“We worked so hard to get into the Europa League, we want to go and enjoy it now,” Davis said. “We’ve made a good start against Sparta and it’s important we build upon it again.

“We want to progress through group stages and progress from there.”

Austin backed for England call-up

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has backed Charlie Austin to win an England call-up after the Saints striker made it five goals in four games as his side thrashed West Ham 3-0.

Austin is on fire at the moment, hitting his stride for the first time since his £4m move from QPR in January.

The 27-year-old has yet to win an England cap in his career, having had one call-up in May 2015 that didn’t led to an international debut.

With Sam Allardyce searching for goalscoring options with Harry Kane sidelined, and England having a double header of Euro qualifiers coming up early next month, the timing might be perfect for Austin.

“I hope he can find the selection,” said Puel.

“The best answer is to score every game and to find solutions to get the selection.

“For me it’s important for him and the team that he can score different goals and I think he score with his first chance in the first half.

“This is for a striker in confidence is very interesting.

“I think it was important for the future also that many other players can score and not just Charlie.”

Puel fielded an all-English strike force for the win over West Ham, with Nathan Redmond partnering Austin.

Redmond is highly experienced at under-21 level for England, and there has even been talk over whether he can win a call-up to the full squad in the future.

Puel stated his belief in Redmond, but warned not to place unrealistic expectations on a young player.

“It’s a young player and he has all the future for him,” insisted the Saints manager.

“He improve every day, he can play on the wide, he can play as a striker, he has all the qualities to score but for the moment I think he didn’t have a very long run and it’s important to continue his work with a good spirit and attitude.

“It’s a player who can make the difference with the ball and give a good assist and his work is very important for the team.”

West Ham fan reaches Andy Tate levels of anger following Southampton loss

Show/hide article…

It’s fair to say West Ham are experiencing a few teething problems following the move to their shiny new home.

The former Olympic Stadium, now known as the London Stadium, suffered its second defeat in as many games on Sunday - West Ham’s fourth Premier League loss in a row.

The 3-0 Southampton thrashing has left the Irons third from bottom with just three points to their name - and the fans are far from happy.

Take Dom from the video above, for example. Speaking to West Ham Fan TV , the claret and blue supporter almost turned his club’s colours with rage as he exploded in a profanity-fuelled rant.

Dom puts the majority of the blame on the owners and says they have created a “toxic” atmosphere amongst the fans.

After declaring that he feels sick and broken, the disgruntled fan continues to offload his anger by declaring his displeasure with Slaven Bilic’s tactics.

Fans shout in the background, “we should have stayed at Upton Park” - which Dom lets us know he agrees with.

Halfway through the interview, Dom himself is comically called an embarrassment by a fellow Irons supporter. The two fully grown men then boil over in a heated verbal exhange.

Following his rant, Dom is asked what needs to be done to change the club’s fortunes. His response? “I dunno.”

Graham Poll slams Jon Moss following referee’s performance at West Ham

Show/hide article…

Graham Poll has criticised official Jon Moss following his performance during West Ham 's defeat against Southampton .

The referee booked seven players - five of them from the home side - as the Saints cruised to a 3-0 win at the London Stadium.

Moss was slammed by Andy Carroll after awarding a penalty against the Hammers during a 2-2 draw against Leicester at the back end of last season.

And former Premier League referee Poll has stuck the boot in to Moss after another controversial display.

“In a relatively straightforward game the Wearside referee struggled to maintain control with virtually every decision being disputed and challenged,” Poll wrote in his Daily Mail column.

"The fact Moss cautioned seven players, five of them from West Ham, in a game without a nasty tackle showed how he failed to manage the match.

“When players respect referees they accept that good referees can miss incidents; when they don’t they just think the referee is a bad one.”
