Premier League Predictions: Arsenal to beat Chelsea, Man United to edge past Leicester

Show/hide article…

Jose Mourinho needs his side to get back on track and fast after losing their last two matches against Watford and arch-rivals Manchester City. But Leicester won’t be an easy match for the Red Devils, especially if they concede early in front of what will likely be a nervous Old Trafford crowd. However the omens are good for United who are unbeaten in seven home league games against the Foxes. Everton are enjoying a successful spell coinciding with Romelu Lukaku’s sensational return to goalscoring form. The same cannot be said of Bournemouth who suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City last time out. Expect Eddie Howe’s men to be much better in defence and make Everton work for a hard-fought victory with Lukaku scoring a late winner.

Burnley aside, Liverpool have been impressive this season and should walk this against Hull. The Tigers, led by caretaker Mike Phelan, have given themselves a great shot at survival thanks to their promising start to the season. But with Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and co in full swing at Anfield, there should only be one outcome. Tottenham will look to keep their unbeaten record intact when they travel to Middlesbrough but they will be without Harry Kane who is out injured with damaged ankle ligaments. The promoted side have lost their last two Premier League matches but will be boosted by the return of Cristhian Stuani and Jordan Rhodes. I don’t think either team will be able to grab all three points in this one although the performance of Kane’s deputy, Vincent Janssen, will no doubt have Spurs fans watching carefully.

Stoke have had a shocking start to the season and you’ve got to wonder if relegation beckons for the Potters. West Brom looked vastly improved last week as they brushed aside West Ham at the Hawthorns. Tony Pulis is returning to his former stomping ground and an in-form Salomon Rondon and Nacer Chadli could be too hot for Ryan Shawcross to handle. Sunderland are desperate for points and look uninspiring in every department at the moment. Crystal Palace invested well in the summer and Alan Pardew’s new stars are beginning to gel. But with a vocal home crowd behind them, this could be the turning point for David Moyes’ Black Cats.

These are worrying times at the Liberty Stadium with a poor run of form set to cost Francesco Guidolin his job. Pep Guardiola’s side have been head and shoulders above the rest of the Premier League so far and their second string saw off the Swans in the EFL Cup earlier in the week. Expect Manchester City to make it six wins out of six. Arsenal have picked up some pace after a slow start to the season. In contrast, Antonio Conte’s Chelsea revolution has stuttered in recent weeks. Both teams are bursting with quality, but the Blues might be weary after being forced to play extra time against Leicester in the EFL Cup this week.

Saints deny claims the club offered job paying under minimum wage

Show/hide article…

SOUTHAMPTON FC has denied claims that it offered to pay under the minimum wage in a job advert.

The club has insisted that claims that it offered to pay below the minimum wage for the position working in the ticket office were wrong.

The claims come after the club broke its transfer record to sign Sofiane Boufal for £16million and gave contracts worth thousands of pounds a week to Ryan Bertrand, Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk and Cedric.

A complaint had been made to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) by independent Southampton City councillor for Redbridge Andrew Pope.

Cllr Pope’s complaint relates to an advert on the club’s own website in July this year for a job in the ticket office who quoted a rate of £6.50 per hour or the minimum wage.

Mr Pope complaint was that it implied that lower than the minimum wage, which is currently £7.20, would be paid.

However, Saints have said the people hired for the role actually get paid more than the minimum wage.

The club said the wording was a commonly adopted policy to reflect how the minimum wage varies depending on your age.

In a statement the club said: "The job role referred to was a casual ticket office assistant role, clearly advertised at ‘£6.50 or above depending on national minimum wage’ - a common practice adopted by thousands of businesses to reflect the varying minimum wage rates which are dependent on the age of the employee.

"The two 18 year olds employed by the club as a result of this job advert are in fact being paid £6.70 per hour - well above the minimum wage for 18-20 year olds of £5.30.

The statement added: "The club maintains regular contact and an excellent relationship with HMRC as a result of operating within such a high profile industry.

"As part of a league-wide process that began in June 2016, the club recently welcomed their team to St Mary’s for a routine national minimum wage audit.

“There have been no findings communicated to the club thus far to indicate the club is anything other than fully compliant with their regulations.”

The Premier League pledged in March last year that all its clubs would pay the rate defined by the Living Wage Foundation which is £9.40 in London and £8.25 elsewhere to all their full-time staff from the start of this season, when the new £8billion broadcasting right deal came into force.

Cllr Pope said: “I have been campaigning to improve staff pay in football for years, because the pay gap couldn’t be bigger between players, agents and staff.

"I have reported Southampton FC because I believe I have evidence to warrant an investigation by HMRC.

An HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) spokesperson said that they followed up all complaints about potential wage abuse but could not comment on individual cases.

West Ham dealt injury blow ahead of Saints visit

Show/hide article…

West Ham have been dealt another injury blow ahead of Saints’ visit with the news that defender Arthur Masuaku will be out for at least six weeks.

The 22-year-old Frenchman was brought in for £6million from Olympiacos in August as cover for injured left-back Aaron Cresswell.

But Masuaku has now joined Cresswell on the casualty list after damaging knee ligaments during the EFL Cup win over Accrington on Wednesday night.

For manager Slaven Bilic it is another problem to solve in a defence which conceded eight goals in their previous two Premier League outings.

The Hammers face Southampton on Sunday without a recognised senior left-back, so one of Alvaro Arbeloa or Sam Byram will have to move across from right-back to fill in.

“Masuaku did his knee against Accrington, he damaged ligaments and we will know better in a week but it’s going to be at least six weeks, if not more,” said Bilic.

"Some players can play in different positions, and you can fill gaps, but when you have two left-backs who have done the same ligaments it’s not good news.

“But I’m not looking for excuses. But we have a good team and I expect us to do it on Sunday.”

Bilic can welcome centre-half Winston Reid back after a couple of weeks on the sidelines and also had positive news on Cresswell, as well as injury-hit striker Andy Carroll.

“It was in the papers on the day we played Accrington that Carroll had had a setback, but it’s not true,” he added.

"We are expecting him and Cresswell to join and train with the team after the international break.

“Injury wise we look much better than at the beginning of the season. We have a good team and I expect us to be really good in every way on Sunday afternoon.”

Summer signing Andre Ayew and fellow forward Diafra Sakho are still out injured.

The visit of Saints is the first Premier League match at the London Stadium since trouble flared among fans during the 4-2 defeat by Watford.

The West Ham board are attempting to solve the problems by improving stewarding, relocating disgruntled fans and beefing up the segregation between rival supporters.

Defeat on Sunday could see West Ham slump to the foot of the table so Bilic has urged the fans to put the off-field issues to one side and back the team.

“I want the fans to be behind us, and they will be,” he said.

“We need their support more than ever and they will play a big part in this game. We need them all the time, but especially now to help get out of this situation. I have no doubt they will be very positive.”

West Ham v Southampton preview: Charlie Austin in line for rare start

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin is pushing for a starting role when Southampton travel to West Ham on Super Sunday, live on Sky Sports 1 HD.

The striker has netted four goals in his last three games to help Saints recover from a slow start to the season.

Claude Puel’s side picked up their first Premier League win of the season last weekend, sandwiched between victories in the Europa League and EFL Cup.

West Ham also enjoyed success in the EFL Cup, with Dimitri Payet’s last-gasp free-kick earning them a 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley.

Having lost their last three Premier League games, and conceding 11 goals in the process, Hammers boss Slaven Bilic hopes the win can be a turning point.

“I’ve seen those kind of things happen in football,” he said after the win over Accrington. “We can’t lose the confidence, we have to be happy and come out in a positive way.”

West Ham will be without a recognised left-back against Southampton after Arthur Masuaku joined Aaron Cresswell on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Bilic can welcome back centre-half Winston Reid, however, after he shook off the knock which has kept him out for a fortnight.

Andy Carroll is progressing well after a knee injury and will be back after the international break. Fellow forwards Andre Ayew (thigh) and Diafra Sakho (back) are still out.

Southampton will again be without forward Jay Rodriguez because of a groin problem, but Puel is expected to recall his first-team regulars after changing the side for the midweek EFL Cup win over Crystal Palace.

Club-record signing Sofiane Boufal continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury, and the Morocco midfielder could make a belated debut after the international break, while right-back Jeremy Pied (knee) is a long-term absentee.

The team scoring first has gone on to lose this exact fixture in each of the last three seasons, with West Ham coming from behind twice (L1).

The Saints have won just one of their last five league visits to West Ham (D1 L3), with both teams scoring in each match.

The Hammers have only failed to score in one of their 14 home Premier League meetings with Southampton (0-1 in December 2002).

West Ham have conceded four goals in consecutive Premier League games for the first time since March 2008, when they conceded four goals in three straight games.

Indeed, the Hammers have lost three consecutive Premier League games for the first time under Bilic - they’ve not lost four in a row since April 2014.

Saints have scored just four goals in their five Premier League games this season and never more than once in a match.

If West Ham don’t win this game, they are in for a long season at the London Stadium.

Accrington looked pretty comfortable on Wednesday in the EFL Cup until Dimitri Payet’s late free-kick bailed West Ham out.

Southampton were unlucky against Arsenal and since then they have done very well, winning three on the bounce. They have turned the corner.

It’s good to see Charlie Austin back among the goals, too, and you just want Shane Long to be as ruthless as Austin.

He gets into great positions, but doesn’t have the killer instinct to finish. He will still do his hard work and I think West Ham need to watch him, because he’ll be too quick for their defenders on the break.

Watch Man Utd v Leicester, Crolla v Linares, Aston Villa v Newcastle and Hull KR v Huddersfield on NOW TV for £6.99. No contract.

Michail Antonio scored his first ever Premier League goal in this exact fixture last season as West Ham came from behind to win 2-1.

Antonio has scored 10 headed Premier League goals in 2016 – twice as many as any other player.

Indeed, West Ham have had five headed shots on target in the Premier League this season, all of which have been converted by Antonio.

West Ham have conceded four goals in consecutive Premier League games for the first time since March 2008, when they conceded four goals in three straight games.
