Puel’s trust in youngsters is “brilliant” says Saints starlet

YOUNGSTER Harrison Reed has revealed that Claude Puel has focused a lot of time on Saints’ academy stars and that the trust he’s prepared to put in the club’s youth is “brilliant”.
It is a recognisable change from the Ronald Koeman era – during which the now Everton manager stated that he “wasn’t impressed” by what Saints’ famed academy, which has produced the likes of Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott and Luke Shaw, had to offer.
Former boss Koeman believed that many of the young players weren’t close to the required standard.
Reed, one of the latest products of the Staplewood youth programme, described how Puel has already put time and effort into nurturing the club’s youngsters, revealing that he’s learning a lot.
The French boss has given the midfielder some advice, as he looks to make it a breakthrough campaign at Saints after being on the fringes of the first team since 2013.
“It’s massive and great that he’s willing to give everyone a chance,” Reed said. “It gives us a chance to show him what we can do.
“It’s important for us youngsters to put the work we’ve done on the training ground into practice on the pitch.”
“I speak to the manager after every under-23s game,” he continued. “One thing that came out after the last game was that he wanted me to be more disciplined, and preserve my energy more so I can be more aggressive and win the ball back, rather than making long runs forward.
“That’s something I look to add to my game.”
The 21-year-old was one of four academy stars to start in the 2-0 League Cup third-round victory over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.
Two of those – James Ward-Prowse and Matt Targett – have been regulars for Saints, but for the other pair, Reed and Jake Hesketh, it was a big chance to impress, which they subsequently did with excellent performances, including a goal for Hesketh.
“The young players train with the first team – that’s a great opportunity,” he said. “That’s one thing, but also to get the opportunity in the games takes a lot of trust from the manager.
“For the manager to put that trust in us young players, who he sees every day, to go out and win the games is brilliant for us.”
Although Reed doesn’t want to get ahead of himself, he hopes this will be breakthrough season at St Mary’s for him.
He said: “I’ve set my sights quite high. It’s down to me to show the manager what I can do when I get the chance.
“I’m just looking to taking every opportunity that comes my way as well as working hard in training and to keep speaking to the manager and keep learning from him.”
The Worthing-born man hailed his academy team-mate Hesketh after his superb Palace performance.
“We can see everyday what he can do, his ability on the ball to create chances and score goals,” he said. “If you watch him in the under-23s, he does it week in week out and for him to do it tonight was great.”
“He’s a really top player,” he added. “If you can get him on the ball he causes lots of problems. You saw a player of Yohan Cabaye’s quality couldn’t get anywhere near him.
“It’s up to him to push on and reach whatever level he can, but at the moment he’s doing really well.”

Arsenal face Chelsea, champs Leicester’s trip to Manchester United

Chelsea will look to hit back after last week’s 2-1 defeat at home to Liverpool when they travel to bitter rivals Arsenal on Saturday evening.
Manchester United, meanwhile, are stuck in a rut. Yes, they won against League One Northampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, but it’s two defeats in a row in the league ahead of the visit of champions Leicester.
Elsewhere, Manchester City have a 100 percent record under Pep Guardiola, and the latest team to try and stop them, Swansea, lost 2-1 to Saturday’s opponents in the EFL Cup, too.

ARSENAL: The Gunners have responded well to the 4-3 opening weekend defeat to Liverpool, but Chelsea provide the sternest test yet. Arsene Wenger’s men do have some momentum, and the midweek win over Nottingham Forest showed they have depth and quality to call on if needed. It’s imperative they don’t capitulate in familiar fashion to traditionally tricky opposition. It’s a test of Arsenal’s Premier League mettle, but one they should feel pretty confident about.
Prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Chelsea – Andrew Mangan
CHELSEA: Recent results between Arsenal and Chelsea will give the Blues a psychological edge going into the game – but will it be enough this time? Both defences have a suspect element to them which has typically been countered by attacking prowess. This means a boring 0-0 encounter is unlikely. With so much at stake and avoiding defeat a priority for both managers, a high scoring draw is a distinct possibility. Prediction: Arsenal 3-3 Chelsea – Mark Worrall
MAN UNITED: Leicester City have had uneven form in recent weeks, succumbing 4-1 to Liverpool in between two wins, while United have lost their past two in the league. These two teams with wounded pride and porous defences seem set for a draw.
Prediction: Manchester United 2-2 Leicester – Musa Okwonga
LEICESTER: The last time Leicester travelled to Old Trafford they got a vital point and days later they were Premier League champions. This time City face an out-of-sorts United side with a point to prove. It should be an intriguing encounter, especially with Claudio Ranieri up against former foe Jose Mourinho. The last time the pair met, Leicester beat Chelsea 2-1 and Mourinho was sacked shortly after. Expect a cagey encounter. Prediction: Manchester United 1-1 Leicester – Ben Jacobs
SWANSEA: Having lost the “battle of the B-teams” in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, Swansea will be looking to avenge themselves in league play against a full-strength Manchester City on Saturday. Francesco Guidolin lately has favoured unduly cautious football, but the last time City failed to score in a league game was way back in March.
Prediction: Swansea 1-4 Manchester City – Max Hicks
MAN CITY: City return to Swansea’s Liberty Stadium three days after winning there in the EFL Cup and must try not to let Vincent Kompany’s injury scare them or the next round match against Manchester United take their minds off the big task: Turning nine wins out of nine into 10 wins out of 10.
Prediction: Swansea 0-2 Manchester City – Simon Curtis
LIVERPOOL: In form Liverpool have shown they can overcome the Premier League’s top sides and now they need to prove they can also beat the teams they are expected to beat. Having lost already this season to a newly promoted club, Jurgen Klopp’s men will be anxious to make sure there is no repeat when they face Hull City at Anfield, and they won’t make the same mistakes they did against Burnley.
Prediction: Liverpool 4-0 Hull City – David Usher
HULL CITY: A trip to Anfield looks to be among the toughest assignments the Premier League has to offer on current form. Hull City will set up to be hard to break down, just as they did against Manchester United and Arsenal, but Liverpool have the attacking quality to hurt Mike Phelan’s men. Hard to make a case for anything but a home win.
Prediction: Liverpool 2-0 Hull City – Phil Buckingham
MIDDLESBROUGH: Boro will aim to regroup after two defeats on the trot as they continue their quest to prevent slack defensive displays from letting them down. Goalkeeper Victor Valdes will have to be at his very best to help the team come anywhere close to a clean sheet, and fans will hope to see midfield stalwart Adam Clayton back from injury. Tottenham’s attacking efforts may be somewhat hampered by injuries, particularly to star striker Harry Kane.
Prediction: Middlesbrough 0-2 Tottenham-- Catherine Wilson
TOTTENHAM: While Tottenham are now missing Harry Kane, they have a number of attacking midfielders in good form – Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela and Son Heung-Min have all shone this week – so they should get chances. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough have lost their past two Premier League matches and their last home game was a 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. Spurs can match that.
Prediction: Middlesbrough 1-2 Tottenham – Ben Pearce
BOURNEMOUTH: The Cherries were knocked out of the EFL Cup on Tuesday by Championship side Preston and Eddie Howe would have preferred an easier opponent than undefeated Everton to try and rebuild some momentum. Josh King’s pace will still expose Phil Jagielka and help to secure a point.
Prediction: Bournemouth 2-2 Everton – Will Kent
EVERTON: Ronald Koeman’s men need a response to prove the shock midweek EFL Cup defeat to Norwich was merely the result of too many changes and underperforming replacements. None of the fringe players performed on Tuesday, so the usual starting XI should have a chance to build on four successive league wins.
Prediction: Bournemouth 0-1 Everton – Luke O’Farrell
SUNDERLAND: Old habits die hard. League Cup progress apart, Sunderland have started another season abysmally. It is too soon to talk about time running out for manager David Moyes, but with just a point from five games, he desperately needs a home win, and Saturday’s opponents are beatable.
Prediction: Sunderland 2-1 Crystal Palace – Colin Randall
CRYSTAL PALACE: The Eagles haven’t lost a game at the Stadium of Light since 2005, and with Alan Pardew’s side now playing with renewed confidence, another win should be in the offing.
Prediction: Sunderland 0-2 Crystal Palace – Rob Sutherland
WEST HAM: Is West Ham’s current form an early season blip or is it symptomatic of something much more? Defeats against Watford and West Brom have been hard to take, and another against Southampton would suggest huge problems. Hammers to just shade it at home.
Prediction: West Ham 2-1 Southampton – Peter Thorne
SOUTHAMPTON: The visitors are bang in form, having won their past three games in three different competitions without conceding a goal. They can take full advantage of West Ham’s early season woes by inflicting another home defeat at the London Stadium
Prediction: West Ham 0-1 Southampton – Alex Crook
STOKE: West Brom will aim to frustrate Stoke, and the onus will be on the likes of Bojan Krkic to breach a deep, well-organised defence. Marko Arnautovic will hope he can make it three goals in as many games to secure the Potters’ first win of the season.
Prediction: Stoke 1-1 West Brom – James Whittaker
WEST BROM: Tony Pulis will be looking to take some momentum from West Brom’s 4-2 win against West Ham into their next fixture at his former club Stoke City. Salomon Rondon will be a threat to the Stoke defence, particularly with Nacer Chadli pulling the strings in the No. 10 role.
Prediction: Stoke 1-2 West Brom – Matthew Evans
BURNLEY: Despite a couple of poor results away from home, the Clarets have looked much more competent at Turf Moor and Sean Dyche’s side will fancy their chances against Watford. With club-record signing Jeff Hendrick incorporated into the side, the service into key forward Andre Gray should be better, but recent history has seen a lot of draws in this fixture – the points have been shared in five of the past six meetings between Burnley and Watford – and another draw seems likely.
Prediction: Burnley 1-1 Watford – Jamie Smith
WATFORD: After impressive back-to-back victories, Watford will be hopeful of continuing their good form at Turf Moor. For the first time this season, the Hornets will go into a fixture as favourites, and this will bring with it a different type of pressure. Similarly, the Clarets will have identified this game as an opportunity for valuable points, so expect a tight Monday night affair.
Prediction: Burnley 1-1 Watford – Mike Parkin
Wayne Rooney is under pressure after a troubling run of poor form while his international teammate, Harry Kane, is missing for Tottenham and they’ll have to find a way to deal with his absence at Middlesbrough.

Bilic talks form, team morale and Southampton in this week’s column

A week ago in this column I wrote that I expected a “big-time reaction” from the team at West Brom after the home defeat by Watford.
It didn’t happen — anyway not until the game was out of our reach.
So what now? Do I say “enough is enough” and make substantial changes — do I have other options?
I see the players almost every day of the week, for hours on end.
I assess the morale, both of the group and the individual, and what I have seen this week, in the aftermath of that 4-2 defeat by West Brom, is a very positive squad of players that are hurting and want desperately to right the wrongs of the last couple of games.
It is not like they don’t care, although they know the credit they have built will not last for ever. It would be different if I had seen the heads drop and the shoulders sag but, honestly, I don’t see that with this group of players. They care, they hurt and they want to do it.
That gives you belief that we can turn this around as quickly as it has gone wrong. Maybe the players did become a little complacent. We are always telling them not to be but sometimes you don’t wake up to that reality until you are in trouble. This is the Premier League. Nothing is easy here and to do well, you have to be a little bit afraid, in a positive way, that things might go wrong.
The good thing is that it is early. We can get out of this as quickly as it has happened but we have to accept responsibility — all of us. We have to force this change, not anyone else.
If we look back to last season, we had a spell when, because of injuries, we struggled to win. We dug in and fought our way to draws, rather than defeats.
We have to do the same now. The truth is very simple. This is the Premier League and there are no free meals. They don’t exist.
Of course it takes time for players from other countries to settle in. It has happened to the biggest stars, even players like Dennis Bergkamp, who struggled after joining Arsenal. It is easier, though, when the club are doing well.
It is expected often that a player just puts on the new jersey with new team-mates in a new country — and clicks straight way. That happens sometimes but not always.
I am looking forward to the challenge of Southampton on Sunday. They lost three of their best players during the summer in Victor Wanyama, Sadio Mane and Graziano Pelle — three top players.
Over the last few years that has been the trend for them but they always buy well. They have pace and skill up front with Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond and if you add Charlie Austin to that, we have to expect a tough game.
Last season we played them on December 28. We had gone eight games without a win but we beat them 2-1 at home on that day and things began to get better.
I hope something similar happens on Sunday.
