West Ham United v Southampton

Show/hide article…

West Ham are without a recognised left-back after Arthur Masuaku joined Aaron Cresswell on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Central defender Winston Reid will return, but Andre Ayew, Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho remain out.

Southampton boss Claude Puel is expected to hand a start to Charlie Austin, who has scored four goals in his last three matches.

Fellow striker Jay Rodriguez is out with a groin problem.

Guy Mowbray: "The form guide says Southampton to win, with three victories in a row suggesting they’re on the right track after an initially sluggish start under Claude Puel.

"Charlie Austin has scored in all those wins, and he’ll relish the chance to net again against the club that publicly questioned his fitness last year after deciding against signing him.

"West Ham’s problem lies at the other end of the field, and ;the problem is big’ says Slaven Bilic.

"We might then reasonably expect a cautious approach from his side, with defensive discipline paramount.

“Talking of which, here’s a quirky fact: referee Jonathan Moss has sent someone off in each of the last six Hammers games he has officiated!”

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: "Injury-wise we look much better than at the beginning of the season. We have a good team and I expect us to be really good in every way on Sunday afternoon.

"I want the fans to be behind us, and they will be.

“We need them all the time, but especially now to help get out of this situation. I have no doubt they will be very positive.”

Southampton manager Claude Puel: "We can see the good work on the training sessions and in every game, we are strong in defence and also with good possibilities on the counter-attack, playing good football, even with different players out on the pitch.

"All of the squad can take confidence from this, to show that it is possible to play these many games every three days, which is what we challenged the squad to do at the start (of the season).

Southampton have the lowest shot conversion rate in the Premier League, just 6.45%. Shane Long is probably most to blame for that, but Charlie Austin is a finisher and, as he showed last weekend against Swansea, if he is picked and gets a chance, he will take it.

West Ham have been struggling at the back but they have been working hard to improve defensively, and it will come.

Puel reveals Rodriguez will be out for three weeks

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel has revealed that Jay Rodriguez is set to miss the next three games through injury – but added that he should return after the October international break.

Puel also stated that £16m record signing Sofiane Boufal, who signed from Lille in the summer transfer window, will be assessed in the coming weeks as he works towards his Saints debut after arriving at the club with a knee injury.

Rodriguez is recovering from a groin injury which he picked up during his goalscoring cameo in the 3-0 Europa League win over Sparta Prague last week at St Mary’s.

He has subsequently missed victories over Swansea City in the Premier League and Crystal Palace in the League Cup.

But it seems he won’t be back quickly after having an operation on the problem.

And Puel must now plan for the punishing fixture pile-up with Rodriguez’s absence in mind.

"We have no new injuries, just a groin injury for Jay Rodriguez,” he said.

“He will come back after the international break. Boufal continues his work, we will see for him after the international break perhaps.”

It will keep him out of Sunday’s trip to West Ham, the trip to Israel to face Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Europa League and the visit to Leicester City a week Sunday.

However, it is expected that he’ll be nearing or ready for a return for Saints’ match against Burnley at St Mary’s in three weeks time.

Rodriguez has battled with serious injuries for the past two years and, after a bright start to the season,is once again having to put football to one side and focus on fitness concerns.

The 27-year-old scored against Sunderland in August and netted his second of the season in Saints’ opening Europa League game eight days ago.

Meanwhile, Puel feels Saints are adapting well to his style of play after three straight wins.

The French boss changed Saints’ style of play as soon as he arrived at the club.

The diamond 4-4-2 that is now deployed was an alien formation to the players after nearly three seasons playing 4-2-3-1.

Some of their early performances reflected that.

However, Puel believes that the players are now settling in well with how he likes to play.

“We can see good work in the training sessions and good work for every game,” he said. “We are strong in defence and we have good possibilities on the counterattack.

“We play good football with different players on the pitch and this is very important because all the squad take confidence and it shows that it is possible to play many games.

“We change the starting team every time and this is very interesting for the squad – it keeps a good energy.

“All this is positive, but now we must continue the good work and now three games away is very difficult.”

West Ham vs Southampton team news: Possible line-ups, injury updates

Show/hide article…

West Ham will be looking to move out of the relegation zone with a win over Southampton at the London Stadium.

The Hammers find themselves in 18th place with just three points from their five games so far, but a last-minute winner from Dimitri Payet midweek against Accrington Stanley is bound to lift the mood.

Saints are quietly building some momentum of their own under Claude Puel with the diamond really starting to click.

Charlie Austin has two goals in two games with victories over Swansea in the league and Palace in the cup.

Southampton eye Hatem Ben Arfa transfer from PSG for a reunion with his old Nice boss Claude Puel

Slaven Bilic is without Arthur Masuaku after limping out of the Hammers’ EFL Cup tie with Accrington midweek and the Croatian boss confirms the defender will miss six weeks.

Winston Reid is back after a minor knock ruled him out of the demoralising defeat to the Baggies and the Kiwi should partner Angelo Ogbonna at the back.

Aaron Cresswell (knee), Andy Carroll (knee), Andre Ayew (thigh) and Diafra Sakho (back) are all ruled out.
