Southampton’s Claude Puel pleased to earn first Premier League win

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel was relieved to end his wait for a first Premier League win as Southampton manager after beating Swansea City 1-0 at St. Mary’s on Sunday.

Charlie Austin came off the bench to secure victory and lift Saints out of the bottom three.

“I think it was a very good performance, because it was a difficult game,” Puel told Southampton’s official website.

"We had many situations where we didn’t score and it was important to keep the good attitude, to keep the good spirit and to continue the work and to play good football.

“I said congratulations after the game to my players, because to win this game with things going against us was very difficult, and sometimes also the decision of the referee was contrary, and it’s a very good win together. For the future it will be important.”

Puel made six changes from the side that beat Sparta Prague 3-0 in the Europa League and left Jay Rodriguez and James Ward-Prowse out of his squad altogether.

“Jay has a little injury and we’re going to look at this tomorrow and James was the player off for the day, for recovery,” Puel said. “It’s important to keep all the players with good possibilities and good energy to play.”

Charlie Austin admits he should have scored THREE v Swansea after hitting winner

Show/hide article…

Goals have been like buses for Charlie Austin – after waiting ages for one, three have come along almost at once.

Austin, unusually for him, had gone nine, injury-disrupted months without scoring before Thursday for Southampton.

But he made it three goals in just four days by adding the winner against Swansea to his two goals against Sparta Prague.

Austin might have expected his Europa League double to be enough to earn him a place in the starting line-up against Swansea.

But Saints boss Claude Puel kept him hungry on the bench and his decision looked a masterstroke after Austin bounced back from missing a sitter to bag the winner 10 minutes after coming on.

And Puel surely owes Austin a more regular starting place. His strikes against Sparta helped earn Puel his first win as Saints boss and yesterday he ensured his new boss broke his Premier League duck.

Austin said: “I should have had three. I’m frustrated, of course, to be on the bench as I scored twice in midweek but if the manager wants to rotate then he is the boss. We have a strong squad.”

His second-half winner also spared the officials a potential ear-bashing from the usually softly-spoken Puel.

Having seen three Premier League penalties given against his side this season, Shane Long was harshly booked for diving to try to win one and the Irishman then had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside.

Southampton should have run out comfortable winners even with those debatable decisions going against them.

They could have been out of sight by half-time. The offside flag spared Steven Davis and Dusan Tadic embarrassment after they got in each other’s way and combined to miss an open goal after Lukasz Fabianski fumbled Long’s tame shot.

Davis, Tadic and Virgil van Dijk went close before Long was booked by referee Mike Jones rather than awarded a spot-kick after he went over Federico Fernandez’s rash challenge.

The chances kept coming after the break. Kyle Naughton’s last-ditch clearance denied Tadic a tap-in before Long’s goal was chalked off when Nathan Redmond was wrongly called offside.

Oriol Romeu headed a Tadic corner over when it seemed simpler to score.

Ronald Koeman never took a risk at Southampton, claims midfielder Oriol Romeu

And the same was the case when Austin, who replaced Long, hit the bar from five yards from Redmond’s low cross.

But a minute later Austin controlled Tadic’s deflected cross and slammed the ball past Fabianski to finally put Southampton ahead.

How toothless Swansea must only wish they had someone who could offer them similar cutting edge.

Fernando Llorente toiled up front with little reward and was ineffective after missing his one chance in the first half, prompting Swansea fans to urge boss Francesco Guidolin to ‘bring on the Baston.’

Club record signing, £15.5million Borja Baston, did eventually come on but his arrival came too late though Fraser Forster did need every inch of his 6ft 7in frame to tip away Gylfi Sigurdsson’s scuffed effort and deny Swansea a late equaliser.

WATCH: Charlie Austin misses Southampton sitter… before netting winner

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin missed a great chance to put Southampton in the lead when the striker turned an unmarked header onto the crossbar.

The Saints substitute came on in the second half as Claude Puel’s side pushed hard for an opening goal against a Swansea side that they dominated for long period’s of Sunday’s match.

Nathan Redmond had already blazed over from close range himself but heads were in hands all around St Mary’s when Austin missed a golden chance to put his side in the lead shortly after coming on for the second half.

Left unmarked in the centre of the area, Austin send his header crashing onto the woodwork, and then watched in horror as the rebound hit the back of the stranded Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, only to slide wide.

Austin - who scored twice in Southampton’s midweek win over Sparta Prague in the Europa League - could barely believe he hadn’t scored… but the forward only had to wait until the 64th minute to find the back of the net - smashing home what turned out to be the winner.

The centre-forward will now hope to have forced his way into manager Puel’s first-team plans.

Claude Puel delighted with first Premier League win

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel was relieved to end his wait for a first Premier League win as Southampton manager.

Charlie Austin climbed off the bench to secure a 1-0 victory over Swansea to lift Saints out of the bottom three.

Austin, back among the substitutes despite his two-goal heroics in the Europa Cup win over Sparta Prague on Thursday evening, watched his team-mates spurn a host of chances.

Nathan Redmond was the chief culprit with some glaring misses, including one from just eight yards.

But Austin had been on for just 10 minutes - and already hit the crossbar - when he controlled Dusan Tadic’s deflected cross and hammered it into the net.

‘It’s a good feeling,’ admitted Puel. 'Also it’s very important for my players.

'It’s difficult when you don’t score from all those chances. But congratulations to my players - they kept a good attitude, a good spirit and a good structure to create those chances.

‘To finish with a victory is very important for the confidence.’

Swansea, by contrast, did not look united, with boss Francesco Guidolin forced to deny more apparent rifts with his players.

After last week’s public fall-out with Neil Taylor, having hauled him off before half-time against Chelsea - he was left out of the squad altogether against Saints - this time Ki Sung-yueng reacted angrily to being taken off.

‘This is not a good attitude,’ said the under-pressure Italian. 'I have to speak with him.

'I respect all my players, the relationship is important. There is no problem. In this squad I have good guys, good players, there is no problem with the relationship. I can understand it, but it’s not a good situation.

‘There is not a problem between me and Neil. In this period I prefer Stephen (Kingsley). I have Angel Rangel as sub and Kyle Naughton can play left or right so I don’t need another left-back in the ranks.’

Of more pressing concern for Guidolin was an abject performance, with striker Fernando Llorente not getting so much as a sniff of an opportunity to open his goal account.

‘I am disappointed. We have to improve as soon as possible, because this way it’s difficult to win in the Premier League,’ he added.

'I am worried because my job is my job and it is my attitude to be always ready if it’s possible.

‘Now we have Man City on Wednesday (in the EFL Cup), Man City again on Saturday, and then Liverpool. We have to improve. The opponent is not important, but our attitude is.’

Super-sub Austin urges Southampton to push on

Show/hide article…

SUPER-SUB Charlie Austin revealed that he was delighted to score the winning goal in Saints’ first victory of the Premier League season – and has urged his team to “push on”.

Austin netted his first Premier League goal at St Mary’s for Saints in the 1-0 win over Swansea yesterday, which was his first since scoring the winner at Manchester United on his debut in January.

The 27-year-old, who netted twice against Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday, slammed home in the box just past the hour-mark to get Claude Puel’s reign up and running in the top flight after coming on ten minutes earlier.

“I’m delighted to score, but more importantly it’s about the team getting our first win,” he said. “We got our first win on Thursday night, then we knew today was important, so I’m delighted we got the three points again.”

He added: “To be fair, I should of got three. I should have scored two minutes before when I hit the bar, but one went in and I was delighted we scored.

“We can push on now. We’ve got a big game [against West Ham] next week.”

Puel kept to his promise and decided to drop Austin to the bench despite his heroics against Sparta, but it didn’t take long for the French manager to turn to his sharpshooter.

He was brought on alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg nine minutes into the second-half to lead his team to glory.

“It’s all about the goals for a centre-forward, but, look, we’ve got plenty of goals in the team,” he said. “Luckily enough it’s coming from me at the moment.”

“The manager wants to rotate and that’s the plan. He’s the boss, he’s in charge and I’ve got to follow orders,” he added.

The £4m striker, who arrived in January from QPR, is playing as a striker under Puel but also takes on responsibilities out wide, which is something he is still getting used to.

Austin is also calling on Saints to make the most of the momentum they’ve built up from two successive home victories.

“I’ve never played there before so it’s all a learning curve,” he said about dropping to the flank. “But it’s coming together nicely.

“We’ve got an important three points today and now we can push on, go again against Palace midweek.

“We’ve got the momentum to keep going getting wins and clean sheets.”

The former Burnley man hadn’t scored in the league since his remarkable debut at Old Trafford, but now he wants to push on after netting against the Swans with the games coming think and fast for Saints.

“Hopefully, I just want to score goals,” he said when I asked if he feels he’s now hitting a rich streak of form. “More importantly I just want to put in good performances for the team.”
