Southampton 1-0 Swansea: Substitute Charlie Austin seals win for dominant Saints

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin came off the bench to score the winner as Southampton beat Swansea City 1-0 at St Mary’s.

Nathan Redmond wasted two great opportunities to give the Saints the lead in the first half, but it was the second-half introduction of Austin that proved the difference.

The striker, who had scored a brace against Sparta Prague in the Europa League in midweek, went agonisingly close to opening the scoring when his header crashed back off the crossbar and drifted the wrong side of the post off the back of goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

But Austin made no mistake with his second great chance in the 64th minute, controlling a deflected Redmond cross on his chest before lashing in what turned out to be a deserved winning goal.

The win - Southampton’s first of the season - was the least that Claude Puel’s side deserved after a completely dominant display against their lacklustre visitors.

They had the pick of the opportunities in a goalless first half, playing some superb football at times, with Dusan Tadic, Redmond and Shane Long linking up to great effect in the final third.

An error by Swansea goalkeeper Fabianski, spilling Long’s shot from range, went unpunished as Tadic was caught offside as he attempted to turn home the rebound. However, the goalkeeper did make amends as he tipped a Tadic free-kick over the bar shortly afterwards, and a Virgil van Dijk header also forced a save out of the busy Swansea keeper as Southampton continued to push for an opener as the first half progressed.

The Saints stepped it up a gear as the interval approached, and the St Mary’s faithful thought they had a penalty when Long went down in the box, only for referee Mike Jones to instead book the striker for diving - a decision that split opinion, despite the striker going down before contact was made.

But the opening goal should have come from the boot of Redmond moments before the break, only for the winger to blast over the bar when clean through - a miss that further frustrated Long, who was unmarked and waiting for a square ball in the centre of the box.

Redmond produced an even more shocking miss in the 44th minute, cutting back on to his right foot to wrong-foot the last covering defender and leave the goal gaping, only to once again send his shot soaring into the crowd behind the goal.

A frustrated Saints came exploding out of the blocks in the second half, with the lively Long sending a shot sliding past Fabianski only for Kyle Naughton to clear it off the line. And Long should have had a goal to his name shortly afterwards when he tucked home Redmond’s cross, only for the winger to be wrongly adjudged as having drifted offside.

Frustration started to build around St Mary’s as Austin’s header came back off the bar, but the goal finally came just after the hour mark and Swansea barely threatened from there on, with a Fraser Forster save from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s shot the only late scare for the home side.

Southampton 1 Swansea 0: Charlie Austin’s goal hands Claude Puel his first Premier League victory

Show/hide article…

It is a cliché to talk of the fine margins that exist in the Premier League but at no club has this been more apparent this season than Southampton. A team that had progressed from eighth to seventh and sixth in the past three years suddenly seems less sure of themselves under Claude Puel and, while performances have not significantly dipped, the knock-on with results had just started to become a concern.

Charlie Austin, though, has singlehandedly settled some nerves over the past five days by inspiring a first win of the season against Sparta Prague on Thursday and then, even more significantly here, a first three-point haul in the Premier League.

Southampton 1-0 Swansea: Austin gives Saints opening league win

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin proved his point by climbing off the bench to secure Southampton’s first Premier League win of the season as they edged out Swansea at St Mary’s Stadium.

The striker was back among the substitutes against the Swans despite his two-goal heroics in the Europa League win over Sparta Prague on Thursday night.

But having watched his team-mates spurn a host of chances to take the lead, Austin found the net just 10 minutes after coming on to snatch a 1-0 victory and give Saints boss Claude Puel his first win in the English top-flight.

It was Austin’s first Premier League goal since his debut winner against Manchester United in January, and earned Saints a deserved three points from a dominant display.

Swansea, by contrast, were abject and remain without a win since the opening day of the season.

They were without defender Neil Taylor, conspicuous by his absence following his public fall-out with manager Francesco Guidolin, who subbed him before half-time against Chelsea last weekend.

But it was in attack where they laboured, with summer signing Fernando Llorente never looking like opening his goal account.

Southampton bossed proceedings from the off and were almost gifted the lead when keeper Lukasz Fabianski spilled a shot from Shane Long.

Steven Davis and Dusan Tadic charged in to tuck away the follow-up only to get in each other’s way and put the ball behind, but fortunately for the duo an offside flag spared their blushes.

Long thought he should have been awarded a penalty after going down under Ferderico Fernandez’s challenge in the area, but referee Mike Jones saw it differently and booked the Saints forward for a dive.

Long’s mood did not improve when Nathan Redmond opted to shoot rather than square the ball across goal and blazed his effort high and wide.

And Redmond was guilty of an even worse miss moments later when he collected Tadic’s low cross and stepped inside Jordi Amat, only to scoop his shot over from eight yards out.

The one-way traffic continued after the break with Long nudging the ball past the onrushing Fabianksi, only for Kyle Naughton to slide in and clear before Tadic could tap into an empty net.

Long then did put the ball into the net but Redmond had been flagged offside as he pulled the ball back.

Long’s afternoon was over shortly after but Austin’s first action was to crash Redmond’s perfectly-weighted ball across the area onto the crossbar.

However, Austin made no mistake in the 64th minute when Tadic’s cross was inadvertently helped on by Amat, chesting the ball at the far post before hammering his volley past Fabianski.

Swansea could still have snatched an unwarranted point when the ball dropped to Gylfi Sigurdsson in the area, but Fraser Forster palmed away his shot to ensure Saints got their league season up and running.

Ronald Koeman wants to raid old club Southampton: He’s plotting a £15m bid

Show/hide article…

The Everton manager switched St Mary’s for Goodison Park in the summer. He has started the season brilliantly at his new club, who are unbeaten five games into the Premier League season.

But he is already planning for the January transfer window and is plotting a £15m bid for Forster, The Sun report. Forster would be the second keeper to join Everton from Southampton, after Maarten Stekelenburg arrived in the last transfer window.

Forster is settled at his current club but if Everton looked likely to make Champions League football, he could be swayed with a move. Everton were linked with a move for Manchester City keeper Joe Hart before he moved to Torino on loan but Koeman cooled his interest in the England No.1. Rui Patricio and Bernd Leno are other goalkeeping options he has looked at.

Southampton 1-0 Swansea: Austin decision justified by Puel

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel justified his decision to leave Charlie Austin out of the starting line-up against Swansea after the striker climbed off the bench to net the winner.

Austin scored twice to help Saints to a 3-0 win over Sparta Prague on Thursday night, but was taken out of the side to face Swansea three days later in the Premier League.

Puel denied it was due to worries over Austin’s fitness record, and pointed to the fact that the £4m man came on to bag the three points as proof the decision had worked.

He said: “He start on the game (as a sub) because he cannot start the first team at the beginning also.

“He played today and scored a goal but it’s not possible for a player to play all this game.

“It’s important when he start he enters the game with a good spirit and good attitude.

“Strikers can score at the beginning and also if they come from the bench.

“With all the players it’s important to keep good attention, to be careful for good play.

“It’s important to keep the play for every player.

“For example, Jay Rodriguez cannot play because he has an injury.

“It’s important to keep all the players with a good attitude.

“I think it was a good decision and for all the players, they keep energy to score and to play well.”

Having endured a difficult first half season at Saints after joining in January, Austin is now starting to hit the form that fans expected from him.

The question for Puel now is how often he can get him in the side.

“I am happy for Charlie and for us also. It’s important for the squad,” reflected the Saints boss.

“I think that for Charlie it’s a good moment, good performance, good attitude and keep a good concentration on the game.

“All the players have a good attitude all the time.

“We cannot win these two games without a good spirit for all the players.

“I think now my players understand the philosophy and the possibilities to change because we can keep good results, good solutions, good football and to win all the game, all the competitions, it’s very important for the squad to play many games.

“It’s hard but a very good challenge for all the squad.

“We have different players who can do good work.”

Claude Puel praises Southampton’s attitude after his first Premier League win

Southampton boss Claude Puel was relieved to end his wait for a first Premier League win, as Charlie Austin climbed off the bench to secure a 1-0 victory to lift Saints out of the bottom three.

Austin - back among the substitutes despite his two-goal heroics in the Europa League win over Sparta Prague on Thursday evening at St Mary’s - watched his team-mates spurn a host of chances.

Nathan Redmond was the chief culprit with some glaring misses, including one from just eight yards.

But Austin had been on for just 10 minutes - and already hit the crossbar - when he controlled Dusan Tadic’s deflected cross and hammered it into the net.

“It’s a good feeling,” admitted Puel. "Also it’s very important for my players.

"It’s difficult when you don’t score from all those chances. But congratulations to my players - they kept a good attitude, a good spirit and a good structure to create those chances.

“To finish with a victory is very important for the confidence.”
