Who is your team’s best penalty taker in the Premier League?

Show/hide article…

Who is your team’s best penalty taker in the Premier League?

Sanchez or Cazorla? Vardy or Mahrez? Austin or Tadic? We name Premier League clubs’ best penalty takers…

Alexis Sanchez was a surprise penalty taker for Arsenal at Hull City on Saturday, with Santi Cazorla - who has already scored twice from the spot this season - on the field. The wisdom of that decision was called into question when Sanchez’s effort from 12-yards was saved.

The incident came just a few days after Charlie Austin had wrestled with Dusan Tadic for penalty-taking duties in Southampton’s Europa League tie with Sparta Prague. The striker won the battle for the ball and found the net with his spot-kick to justify his claim.

But who’s the best penalty taker at your club?

Click on the badge below to reveal the current player with the best Premier League penalty-taking record in the squad.

The stats include all penalties scored in the Premier League - not just with the player’s current club.

The stats also only include players who have taken a minimum of five Premier League penalties, apart from at Bournemouth, Hull City and Swansea City, who have no players who have taken that many. There are no players to have appeared for Burnley this season who have scored a Premier League penalty.

Puel backs Redmond after Swansea misses

Show/hide article…

Nathan Redmond’s role as a striker is not under any threat despite his painful misses against Swansea.

Claude Puel has made the decision to convert the summer signing from Norwich from a winger into a frontman.

Redmond has looked very dangerous in the early days of his time with the club, but wasted a couple of good chance against Swansea, suffering a horrible moment as he blazed over when in time and space in the box just before half time.

However, Puel stuck up for Redmond and said: “It’s a good thing he can have all these chances because it’s important for a striker to have chances. It’s very interesting for the squad.

“It was difficulties to score but next time he would be able to score two or three goals in the same game easier because he’s a very good player with many possibilities.

“Now it’s just a question of time and experience and it’s no problem.

“It’s important he stays with a good attitude and to think for the next chances to finish.”

Saints did squander several presentable openings before Charlie Austin netted the goal that proved to be the winner at St Mary’s.

“It was difficult to not score today with all these chances,” said Puel.

“Just to win 1-0 is the minimum because at the moment I think we can score three or four goals and to make the game easier with good chances. This was not possible and it was important to stay with the structure and the spirit and get this goal in the end.”

Puel did dispute the decision that saw Shane Long booked for diving when he appealed for a penalty, but in the end it didn’t cost Saints as they secured a first Premier League win of the season.

“It’s a good thing,” smiled Puel when asked about the result.

“It’s very important of course for all my players in my squad because all the first games of the Premier League we do many good things without reward.

“It was important to win this game with difficulty because you don’t score all the many chances you have and just to stay a goal up against this team is difficult to finish the game.

“I say congratulations to my players because they keep a good attitude, good spirit, good structure with all these many chances.

“Perhaps the decision of the referee was contrary against us but to finish with a victory is very important for the confidence and for the future.”

THE VERDICT: Saints learning lessons

Show/hide article…

This season was always going to be a learning process for Saints.

They aspire to be a club who are regularly competing in Europe, and, therefore, doing well enough in the Premier League to be regularly qualifying for Europe.

It is not a position they could be described as being even remotely used to.

This first campaign in the Europa League group stages was always likely to throw up plenty of problems that need solving.

A first week of having to play the Thursday-Sunday grind has yielded two wins from two.

Even if both games were at home and against opposition who were not particularly great, they still needed to be overcome and they were.

That would make it wrong to really criticise, but it is fair to observe that Saints have surely picked up some pointers already.

Claude Puel made seven changes to the side to take on Sparta Prague, and then a further six to face Swansea.

That really is stretching his fairly small squad to the maximum.

When you also take into account that yet another competition starts up this week in the shape of the League Cup, and that wins were required after a mixed start to the season, there has been plenty to ponder for Puel.

There are a couple of observations from this first double header that stand out.

It all really stems from the fact that Puel is trying to manage his resources to make sure they can last him over what will be a very long season.

The first is that Charlie Austin and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg add so much to the side that you really could do with them being involved all the time. That might be impossible due to the number of games, but then you need to find a satisfactory way of not relying on them too heavily.

The second is that you need to find a balance between playing a style that conserves energy and one that gets results.

Particularly in the first half against Swansea, the players were often sat deep and tightly bunched when their opponents had the ball.

It might make for a smart way to conserve energy, but without tempo and pressing higher up the pitch creating chances is harder. The same goes for possession football at the back.

Again, these are balances that need to be struck, and Saints haven’t quite found the formula yet, but when you win a game despite missing several good opportunities you give yourself that breathing space.

Overall, they certainly deserved to beat Swansea and collect a first Premier League win of the season, even if the Welsh side carried very little threat going forward.

The first half was patchy stuff, but Saints should have still been ahead at the break.

Nathan Redmond had a few minutes to forget just before the break as he first slashed wide of the near post when presented with a half chance in the area, and then suffered a horrible moment when he blazed over with time and space to pick his spot ten yards out.

Shane Long was booked for diving when he believed he should have been awarded a penalty, and forced Lukasz Fabianski to spill a shot that Steven Davis and Dusan Tadic were grateful to be offside for as they challenged each other trying to convert the rebound, while Virgil van Dijk headed off target when picked out from a corner.

The only times Swansea tested Saints were Kyle Naughton’s early low drive stopped by Fraser Forster and Jose Fonte’s excellent block from Fernando Llorente.

Saints picked up the pace a little in the second period.

Naughton had to get back to stop Long’s flicked shot from creeping in at the far post before Oriol Romeu headed down into the turf and over the bar from a corner.

But it took the introduction of Hojbjerg and Austin on 54 minutes for Saints to really start to convince going forward.

Austin nearly scored on 62 minutes as he slid in to meet Redmond’s low ball from the right but struck the bar, with the rebound hitting Fabianski on the back of the head and bouncing away.

He proved yet again how deadly he is in the box a minute later however, as Tadic’s right wing cross flicked up off Jordi Amat, allowing Austin to control with his chest and hit a great volley as the ball dropped that rocketed into the opposite corner.

Forster had a bit of late business to attend to as he dived to his right to save from Gylfi Sigurdsson and ensure Saints bagged the three points they had earned.

With the pressure on these last couple of games, two wins and two clean sheets is plenty good enough, especially as the lessons learned hint at better things still to come.

Puel has momentum behind him now, and will be looking onwards and upwards as the games keep coming.

Charlie Austin strikes again for Saints as Virgil van Dijk shines once more

Show/hide article…

Claude Puel finally celebrated his first win in the Premier League as Southampton edged past Swansea 1-0 on Sunday, three days after Puel picked up his maiden victory as Saints boss with a 3-0 win over Sparta Prague in Europe.

Puel’s side dominated throughout but finishing deserted them until man of the moment Charlie Austin jumped off the bench to secure victory with his third goal in four days.

Austin, who scored twice in Thursday’s Europa League triumph over Prague, broke the deadlock with a back post volley to end his eight-month wait for a top flight goal.

Austin is back among the goals and Saints finally have a mark in the win column. The way the team overcame their first half blues and kept battling away even as chances were spurned was impressive. Puel was also delighted with the side’s first clean sheet in 17 matches, stretching back to mid-February.

Nathan Redmond’s lack of striking instinct is less a worry but a hindrance on Puel’s system while Jordy Clasie had one of his off games.

6 – Despite Puel announcing at his prematch news conference he would be demoting Austin to the bench, it still seemed strange to not see the striker start after his European heroics in the week. Shane Long and Redmond is a strike partnership which does not look like blooming. Austin’s introduction, along with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, was timed to perfection, a trait Puel is quickly proving shrewd at.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Fraser Forster, 6 – Not an awful lot to do against a Swansea side who were extremely poor. A couple of smart saves were dealt with in textbook Forster style.

DF Cedric Soares, 5 – Not a classic Cedric outing, with plenty of first half possession down the right flank, but provided absolutely nothing of note with cross after cross going wayward. Better in the second half but will need to watch out for the increasingly impressive Cuco Martina.

DF Virgil van Dijk, 7 – The superlatives for the Dutchman have long since run out. Still yet to put a foot wrong this season. Captained the side on Thursday night, and again looked like a leader despite Jose Fonte’s return. His maturity has skyrocketed during the summer.

DF Jose Fonte, 6 – After giving away two penalties in two matches, Fonte would have been happy to just to keep his nose clean. Did nothing wrong but looks underwhelming next to the amazing Van Dijk. Fernando Llorente was hardly the toughest competitor to face up against.

DF Ryan Bertrand, 6 – Completely anonymous in the first half and everything good seemed to come down the right. Has yet to hit the straps this season but, like Fonte, does nothing wrong.

MF Oriol Romeu, 7 – Has become a consistent cog in the midfield diamond. Recently admitted he is enjoying his role, and you can see why. Even when the team is not quite clicking, Romeu is ticking along making sure the side does not slide.

MF Jordy Clasie 4 – Regressed again and with James Ward-Prowse looking good on Thursday and Hojbjerg coming off the bench, his game time could be numbered. Looked lost chasing the ball around and his passing is not up to Premier League quality.

MF Steven Davis, 6 – Typical Davis. When Saints played badly he shies away but when they pick up he is at the forefront of the revival. Was left at sea by the woeful Clasie at times which soured his performance.

MF Dusan Tadic, 8 – A man with a point to prove with record signing Sofiane Boufal gradually getting towards fitness. A rare spark in the first half and set up the goal in the second. Always at the heart of every attack.

FW Nathan Redmond, 5 – Proved he is definitely not a striker with embarrassing finishing. Movement good but his lack of strength and shooting ability is a problem for goal-shy Saints.

FW Shane Long, 5 – Should have had a first half penalty, but instead was booked for diving. Hard to pinpoint any other effect he had on the game, other than being the man who gave way to Austin.

FW Charlie Austin, 8 – Cannot stop scoring at the moment.

MF Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, 8 – Puel needs to start build his midfield around the Dane, like Mauricio Pochettino and Ronald Koeman did with Morgan Schneiderlin.

MF Cuco Martina – Late substitute appearance after a remarkable showing against Sparta. Deployed as a winger, which looked incredibly natural.

Swansea flat as Francesco Guidolin gets it wrong at Southampton

Show/hide article…

Swansea too willingly played the part of the underdog during Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Southampton. They offered nothing going forward, and could have been beaten by a bigger scoreline.

Record signing Borja Baston finally made an appearance, even though he only played for 10 minutes. Swansea’s season has seemed to be partially on hold while the club waits for the striker to regain match fitness, and with the window shut and the rest of the team struggling to assert themselves, he now holds the key to kick-starting the Swans’ campaign.

Ashley Williams’ missing leadership is becoming an almost physical loss, a 12th man that evidently did a lot more than some of the regular XI on a weekly basis.

Sunday’s Swans looked lost, spineless and soft in the face of a fairly nonthreatening Southampton. What Manchester City will do to this club over the next two fixtures (in the EFL Cup and Premier League) doesn’t bear thinking about.

The lack of self-belief in this squad is troubling as on paper the team is good enough not to be in this kind of trouble, and that negativity is seeping into every aspect of play. The team are not pressing without the ball and not moving with it, and by neglecting the basics, they are making themselves easy to beat.

4 – Coach Francesco Guidolin got his tactics completely wrong. Rather than exploit Claude Puel’s narrow Southampton by stretching the play with Swansea’s excellent fast wingers, the Italian simply aped his opponent’s lack of width with an awkward shape. With one dedicated winger in Mo Barrow, it wasn’t quite 4-2-3-1 and wasn’t really 4-3-3 either. When he later changed to 4-2-3-1 and then 4-4-2 to accommodate substitutions, the team looked considerably better.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Lukasz Fabianksi, 7 – Kept it close as usual for Swansea, and is rarely to blame for the few that do go in. Deserves a better defence.

DF Kyle Naughton, 6 – Was among Swansea’s more active players, but made nearly as many errors as positive contributions. At least he was trying.

DF Federico Fernandez, 5 – Looks lost this season, his physical presence diminished and his positioning constantly suspect.

DF Jordi Amat, 6 – Still trying to be Williams and still lacking his predecessor’s veteran savvy. Needs to relax into the role a little more.

DF Stephen Kingsley, 6 – Substituted at half time due to illness, but didn’t make any serious mistakes during his one half.

MF Ki Sung-Yeung, 5 – Achieved 97 percent passing completion by playing 57 percent of his passes backwards. Swansea’s build-up play is far too slow, and Ki is one of the biggest reasons. Defensively made one interception, attempted no tackles and made no clearances.

MF Jack Cork, 6 – Has started to drift from commanding to anonymous. Wasn’t terrible on Sunday but perhaps it’s time for Leon Britton to get a game in his place to help re-establish the Swans’ rhythm?

MF Leroy Fer, 5 – Always tries hard, but couldn’t seem to put a foot right here. Appeared to be confused by the team’s shape and was a passenger defensively.

FW Gylfi Sigurdsson, 6 – Needs to work harder on his relationship with Fernando Llorente. Is far too wasteful with long range shooting lately, and should be looking to find his striker a little more often.

FW Mo Barrow, 6 – Had one shot on target and made two key passes, but was less effective outside his usual dedicated winger role.

FW Fernando Llorente, 7 – Is being given next to nothing to work with, but is doing as much as he can with the little he does get.

DF Angel Rangel, 6 – Replaced Kingsley at half time. Lack of pace is becoming a real issue.

MF Jefferson Montero, 6 – Replaced Ki in the 65th minute. Offered some decent crosses and should have started.

FW Borja Baston, NR – Introduced in the 81st minute for Cork, but had no time to do anything except give Swansea hope for the near future.

10 THINGS WE LEARNED: Dier under pressure for his place at Tottenham

Show/hide article…

A big weekend of Premier League football saw Manchester City continue their perfect start to the season, while Manchester United dropped points at Watford.

Jose Mourinho’s side have now lost three on the bounce, while Everton continued their fine run to move up to second.

Sportsmail’s Ralph Ellis looks back at 10 big talking points from a huge weekend up and down the country…

  1. The arrival of £11million Victor Wanyama and £30m Moussa Sissoko has put England star Eric Dier under pressure for his midfield place at Spurs.

A few days after signing a new five-year contract, the 22-year-old found himself switched to central defence against Sunderland so manager Mauricio Pochettino could find room for both his new boys as well as bringing back Mousa Dembele after finishing his suspension.

Dier gave a polished display alongside Toby Alderweireld before going off with a slight hamstring problem 13 minutes from the end, but the change of position will concern England manager Sam Allardyce who has used Dier as his holding midfield man.

  1. Marouane Fellaini collected his third yellow card in his last three games for a series of fouls against Watford, ending up with the clumsy tackle that gave away an injury-time penalty.

But the big Belgian wasn’t the only Manchester United player giving away too many cheap free-kicks.

United made 19 fouls in all at Vicarage Road, the most by any side this weekend, and that followed on from conceding 15 in the derby against Manchester City.

  1. West Ham will have to pay around £17m to buy Italian international striker Simone Zaza from Juventus if he plays what they describe as a ‘small number of games’.

Exactly how many has not been made public, but will doubtless figure in Slaven Bilic’s future selection decisions until he is certain the 25-year-old can cope with the hurly burly of the Premier League.

Zaza was barely in the game before getting hooked at half-time in the 4-2 defeat at West Brom, fighting only one duel for the ball in 45 minutes and he lost that. His replacement, Jonathan Calleri, was involved in eight duels.

  1. Ross Barkley showed the perfect reaction to being hooked by Everton boss Ronald Koeman for his awful first-half performance at Sunderland on Monday night.

The England midfielder, being put under pressure by Koeman to bring an end product to his talent, showed far more care with the ball as he played his part in the 3-1 win over Middlesbrough.

He gave away only four of 48 attempted passes, had more shots than any other Everton player and created two chances for others.

  1. So much of Arsenal’s hopes of making up ground and mounting a challenge this season will depend on whether Mesut Ozil can finally influence games against the top clubs in the way he bullies the smaller sides.

Ozil was magnificent in the 4-1 win at Hull, finding a team-mate with a remarkable 104 out of 110 passes, and only Hector Bellerin covered more ground than the German’s 6.8 miles.

Arsene Wenger will be hoping he can have a similar impact against Chelsea on Saturday evening.

  1. Kelechi Iheanacho is learning that goals alone won’t win him a place in Pep Guardiola’s future plans for Manchester City – he’s also got to work his socks off.

The fabulously talented 19-year-old made an astonishing 86 sprints during his first 90 minute appearance of the season in the 4-0 destruction of Bournemouth, as well as running further than any other City player (6.8 miles).

  1. Nathan Redmond has been encouraged to adopt more central positions by Southampton manager Claude Puel, and the former Norwich winger is starting to grow into the change of role.

Redmond, who won a remarkable 31 England caps at Under 21 level, was bought by Saints long before the Frenchman was appointed manager so couldn’t have known what was wanted of him.

In the 1-0 win over Swansea he had more shots at goal than any other player, and also created four chances for team-mates.

  1. Ryan Woods earned the nickname of ‘the ginger Pirlo’ from Shrewsbury fans during his time helping the Shropshire side win promotion from League Two and he’s starting to show the same passing skills in the Championship.

The 22-year-old was the best player on show for Brentford in their midweek draw at Aston Villa, and just as influential pulling the strings in Saturday’s 5-0 demolition of Preston.

Brentford, who paid around £1m when he moved to London a year ago, gave him a fresh four-year contract in August after learning that bigger clubs were watching.

  1. Chris Wilder is the latest manager charged with ending Sheffield United’s spell in League One which has now moved into its sixth season.

He’s made a decent start – a 1-0 win over Peterborough at least moved the Blades into the play-off places.

What’s not in doubt is that the club’s fans deserve more. A crowd of 19,555 at the weekend means the average Bramall Lane attendance so far this season is 18,919. That’s only 400 less than the average number of people who’ve seen each French Ligue 1 game so far this season.

  1. Blackpool striker Kyle Vassell’s first go at making it in League football didn’t go so well when Peterborough picked him up from Conference South side Bishop’s Stortford, where he’d scored 16 in 16.

Hailed as the replacement for Crystal Palace-bound Dwight Gayle, he got only five goals in 28 games and was eventually pushed out in a series of loan deals.

He’s getting a second chance after moving to Bloomfield Road on a summer free transfer, however, and is making the most of it. His strike started a comeback against unbeaten Carlisle, and was his fourth in five starts so far.
