Crystal Palace vs Stoke and Southampton vs Swansea live: Goals with our Roboblogger

Show/hide article…

After the goals feast in the 3pm Premier League kick-offs yesterday, could we see a repeat in today’s two 2.15pm kick-offs which involve all three of the relegation zone - and Crystal Palace.

Stoke prop up the table after taking just one point from the opening four games with Mark Hughes confident the tide will soon be turning.

Three successive defeats have followed a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough - 4-1 at home to Manchester City, 1-0 at Everton and 4-0 to Tottenham last Saturday.

Manager Hughes feels it has been a particularly tough set of fixtures with which to start the season, but he also has no doubt some of his players are not playing at the required level.

But, emphasising he knows what he is doing in the Premier League, the Welshman has predicted positive results are not far away.

“It is maybe to do with the fixtures that have been thrown at us, along with not dealing with certain elements of the game you have to,” Hughes said.

"We haven’t as yet been able to put together a really solid 90-minute Premier League performance.

"That’s to do with the opposition not allowing you to play the game you want, and with early-season form - we have a number of players who are maybe not at the level we know they are capable of.

“You need virtually everybody at their top level to get results in the Premier League and at the moment, we’ve had two or three not quite at the level they need to be.”

While Stoke travel to Palace, Southampton will be entertaining Swansea in the other contest.

Southampton 1-0 Swansea RECAP: Austin on target in Saints win

Show/hide article…

For a while it looked as if Southampton weren’t going to be able to find the back of the net no matter what they did, but they finally managed to do so thanks to a great strike from Austin and they fully deserve all three points. Swansea were second best all afternoon and really struggled at both ends of the pitch, with only Sigurdsson going close to test Forster.

Charlie Austin is starting to meet expectations. The striker has scored three goals in his last two appearances for Saints. His finish today came after a beautiful chested touch from a looping ball into the box. Is this the catalyst for him to push on?

Redmond twists and turns on the edge of the Swansea penalty area as the game heads towards its end. Davis makes a good run to his left but the forward instead tries to tee up Austin, but his pass fails to find the striker and is just about cut out by Fernandez.

Swansea are desperately pushing forward as they try to find a late equaliser but, as has been the case for the vast majority of the afternoon, they’re struggling to find much joy in front of goal. Southampton have defended brilliantly and look set to pick up their first clean sheet since February.

Montero tries to muscle his way down the left wing, but Cedric does well to keep the Ecuadorian at bay before thumping the ball back up the pitch. Swansea are pushing as many bodies forward as possible but just can’t seem to break down the hosts’ determined back line.

What an opportunity for Sigurdsson! Llorente holds up the ball brilliantly on the edge of the Southampton box before spinning and finding Sigurdsson, who immediately unleashes a low shot. It looks set to find the bottom left-hand corner of the net but Forster stops it from doing so with an excellent diving save.

Swansea lose the ball midway inside their own half of the pitch and gift Hojbjerg with a chance to dart forward. He does so before trying to tee up Martina, but the two players aren’t on the same wavelength and the ball ends up rolling into the hands of Fabianski.

It’s all Southampton at the moment as they comfortably hold on to possession in the middle of the pitch. Unsurprisingly, they are in no real hurry to push too far forward, and they seem content to keep hold of the ball as they aim to run down the clock.

After a few minutes on the back foot, Southampton push further up the pitch and start to control the game once again. They move the ball around nicely before Tadic unleashes a shot from 25 yards out, but it deflects off a Swansea player and Hojbjerg lets it roll out of play for a corner.

Barrow gets himself into a good position once again, but this time his cross is deep and fails to find a teammate. It’s picked up by Montero, however, but, after doing well to weave into the penalty area, the Ecuadorian’s cross is also poorly hit and fails to pick out a blue shirt.

Swansea are enjoying a good spell of possession at the moment as Southampton sit back and try to hold on to their one-goal lead. However, a run forward from Barrow over on the right wing is slightly mistimed and the linesman’s flag is raised for offside just as he’s about to whip a cross into the penalty area.

Montero has looked bright since coming on to the pitch, but he’s still struggling to bring Llorente into the game. The substitute darts down the left flank and heads towards the byline before sending a looping cross into the middle of the box, but it’s easily cut out by Forster before it can find the Spaniard.

Opportunity for Barrow! The Gambian twists and turns as he makes his way down the right wing before cutting towards the edge of the penalty area, but his low shot from the right-hand side of the box ends up flying straight into the hands of Forster in the middle of the Southampton goal.

And now Romeu goes close! Davis picks up the ball in acres of space over on the left flank and immediately swings a brilliant curling cross into the heart of the box, where Romeu sticks out a foot but can only send his poked shot bouncing just wide of the far post.

Another chance for Austin! Tadic, who has thoroughly enjoyed himself down the right wing, cuts inside on another excellent run before sending a lovely through-ball into the path of Austin. The striker meets it well before unleashing a thumping close-range shot, but Fabianski is there to push it away from danger.

After spending the vast majority of the second half sitting on the back foot, Swansea are finally able to push forward on a promising attack. They work the ball around nicely before Sigurdsson receives the ball 25 yards away from goal, but he’s closed down quickly and is comfortably dispossessed before he can pick out a teammate with a pass.

GOAL! Southampton have finally taken the lead! They come back once again through Tadic, who skips past Naughton before thumping a low cross into the middle of the box. The cross deflects off Amat and into the path of Austin, who brings the ball down well before thumping a rocket of a shot into the top right-hand corner of the net. It’s been coming for a long time, and the home side look incredibly relieved to have finally scored!

What a chance for Austini! Naughton loses the ball over on the right wing and gifts Southampton with a chance to fly forward. Redmond breaks into the right-hand side of the penalty area before firing a low cross into the feet of Austin, but the striker’s first-time effort ends up smashing off both the crossbar and the back of Fabianski’s head before bouncing away from danger. How did that not go in?

Southampton 1 Swansea 0: Austin on target again as Saints secure first league win

Show/hide article…

Austin was in red-hot form on Thursday as Saints kicked off their Europa League campaign with a win over Sparta Prague. The frontman fired a deadly double against the Czech side. But he was dropped to the bench for visit of Swansea to St Mary’s. Having watched his team-mates spurn a host of chances to take the lead, Austin found the net just 10 minutes after coming on to snatch a 1-0 victory and give Saints boss Claude Puel his first win in the English top-flight. It was Austin’s first Premier League goal since his debut winner against Manchester United in January, and earned Saints a deserved three points from a dominant display.

Swansea, by contrast, were abject and remain without a win since the opening day of the season. They were without defender Neil Taylor, conspicuous by his absence following his public fall-out with manager Francesco Guidolin, who subbed him before half-time against Chelsea last weekend. But it was in attack where they laboured, with summer signing Fernando Llorente never looking like opening his goal account. Southampton bossed proceedings from the off and were almost gifted the lead when keeper Lukasz Fabianski spilled a shot from Shane Long. Steven Davis and Dusan Tadic charged in to tuck away the follow-up only to get in each other’s way and put the ball behind, but fortunately for the duo an offside flag spared their blushes. Long thought he should have been awarded a penalty after going down under Ferderico Fernandez’s challenge in the area, but referee Mike Jones saw it differently and booked the Saints forward for a dive.

Long’s mood did not improve when Nathan Redmond opted to shoot rather than square the ball across goal and blazed his effort high and wide. And Redmond was guilty of an even worse miss moments later when he collected Tadic’s low cross and stepped inside Jordi Amat, only to scoop his shot over from eight yards out. The one-way traffic continued after the break with Long nudging the ball past the onrushing Fabianksi, only for Kyle Naughton to slide in and clear before Tadic could tap into an empty net. Long then did put the ball into the net but Redmond had been flagged offside as he pulled the ball back.

Long’s afternoon was over shortly after but Austin’s first action was to crash Redmond’s perfectly-weighted ball across the area onto the crossbar. However, Austin made no mistake in the 64th minute when Tadic’s cross was inadvertently helped on by Amat, chesting the ball at the far post before hammering his volley past Fabianski. Swansea could still have snatched an unwarranted point when the ball dropped to Gylfi Sigurdsson in the area, but Fraser Forster palmed away his shot to ensure Saints got their league season up and running.

Southampton 1-0 Swansea City: Charlie Austin strikes again as Claude Puel’s Saints get first Premier League win

Show/hide article…

Southampton showed no signs of a European hangover as super-sub Charlie Austin fired them to a 1-0 victory over Swansea City.

It is a welcome first Premier League win for Claude Puel, after starting the season without a win in four attempts, against Watford, Manchester United, Sunderland and Arsenal.

Former QPR and Burnley striker Austin, who netted a first-half double against Sparta Prague in the Europa League in midweek, came off the bench to score the game’s only goal shortly after the hour mark.

His first Premier League goal since his debut winner against Manchester United in January, Austin controlled the ball with his chest before lashing home from eight yards.

Southampton move up to 14th on five points, while Francesco Guidolin’s side, who performed poorly on the south coast, remain without a win since the opening day of the season.

They were without defender Neil Taylor, conspicuous by his absence following his public fall-out with manager Guidolin, who subbed him before half-time against Chelsea last weekend.

Southampton 1-0 Swansea City: 5 things we learned

Show/hide article…

Charlie Austin came off the bench to fire Southampton to their first league win of the season against Swansea.

Austin struck 10 minutes after coming on, and one after crashing a sitter against the crossbar, to make it three goals in four days for the Southampton striker.

The three points were fully deserved for Claude Puel’s men.

They created a host of clear chances, saw Shane Long get booked for diving when he might have been awarded a penalty and also saw a goal by the Irishman incorrectly ruled out for offside.

Here are five things we learned…

Francesco Guidolin apologised for subbing Neil Taylor in the first-half against Chelsea. And he claimed he had “forgotten” their fallout in the build up to their visit to St Mary’s and had “no problem” with the left-back.

But Taylor’s omission from the Swansea match-day squad to face Southampton suggests he might have perhaps been being economical with the truth.

It will take much more than two goals and a man-of-the-match performance from Charlie Austin to convince Claude Puel.

That’s what Austin produced against Sparta Prague in midweek but he was dropped back to the bench against Swansea before coming on to score the winner.

The writing was on the wall when, after he was offered the chance to praise Austin’s performance, Puel preferred to talk about all of his strike options and the need to rotate his squad.

The Spanish striker made his mark on Virgil van Dijk in an early clash of heads.

But he is struggling to do the same on the scoresheet and might find himself benched before too long, especially with £15.5m club record signing Borja Baston now fit and in the squad for the first time at St Mary’s.

Southampton have had plenty to grumble about when it comes to decisions this season, having given away three penalties.

You can add two more calls to the list of debatable decisions against them.

Shane Long was harshly booked for diving after having little option other than to hurdle Federico Fernandez’s first-half challenge.

Long then had a goal ruled out for offside after Nathan Redmond was incorrectly adjudged to have been offside in the build-up.

Swansea fans are delighting in the struggles of their big rivals Cardiff, mocking them after they slipped to the foot of the Championship.

But they should be more worried about their side who have now failed to win a league game since the opening day of the season.

Southampton 1-0 Swansea City: Charlie Austin fires Saints to victory

Show/hide article…

A first Premier League win for manager Claude Puel, a Charlie Austin goal, a marriage proposal; the afternoon could not have got much better for two Southampton fans watching their team play Swansea.

It was an unforgettable day for the pair. For the neutrals, it won’t be remembered fondly; a mediocre game, salvaged only by Austin’s introduction from the bench in the second half to score his third goal and earn Southampton a second win in three days.

Southampton were fortunate one supporter chose half-time to propose to their other half. He said yes. The Swansea fans chanted: ‘You don’t know what you’re doing.’ It provided light relief from a first half of very little entertainment.

Nathan Redmond missed the best of the chances. He was played through on the right of goal and skewed an effort high and wide. Even worse, a minute from the break, Dusan Tadic found him with an angled pass through Swansea’s defence and Redmond steadied himself with an excellent first touch, but fired over the bar.

Claude Puel started him as a central striker and has vowed to turn the winger into the next Thierry Henry. They have a long way to go. Shortly into the second half, he took aim from 25 yards and sent one into the stands. Redmond took umbrage to being questioned about his finishing recently, pointing out he was top scorer at Norwich last season. It turned out that was with six goals.

Puel, however, was light on strikers to face Swansea and did not have much choice. Jay Rodriguez has a slight groin tear and is out for a week, after he came from the bench to score against Sparta Prague in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Austin, who scored twice that evening, was a substitute with questions around his ability to play two games in three days considering his injury history.

Shane Long can play there, too, but he was out on the left of a front three. Long was booked for diving midway through the half but the decision seemed harsh as Federico Fernandez slid in and through the player. Long walked away saying to Fernandez, ‘You know, you know’.

Austin came on in the second half and Redmond was shunted out wide. Southampton looked instantly better. Redmond’s low ball across the box from the right found Austin but the striker shot first-time on to the crossbar from close range.

Moments later, they were ahead. Tadic crossed, Jordi Amat toed the ball into the air, Austin controlled it calmly and smashed a shot past Lukasz Fabianski. The Romantics love Austin — from non-league to Premier League and all that — and there were certainly a few of those around St Mary’s.

Gylfi Sigurdsson almost ruined it for Southampton, and that memorable day for those two fans. With four minutes remaining, he found space in the box and shot low towards the bottom left corner.

Fraser Forster dived and stretched and tipped it wide.
