Southampton boss Puel targets first Premier League win of season

Show/hide article…

Manager Claude Puel is confident his Southampton players will finally get the rewards their performances deserve with a first Premier League victory of the season when Swansea visit St Mary’s on Sunday.

The Saints kicked off their Europa League campaign with a 3-0 home win against Sparta Prague on Thursday after Puel made seven changes to his starting XI.

While Puel, appointed following the summer departure of Ronald Koeman, feels the squad have produced some solid displays in each Premier League game, turning those into all three points has so far proved illusive.

Both other league matches at St Mary’s have ended in 1-1 draws, while there were defeats at Manchester United and then Arsenal last weekend, albeit to a somewhat controversial penalty deep into stoppage time.

Nevertheless Puel has seen enough to remain confident that first Premier League triumph is close.

“It was a good result for us in Europe, now it is important to carry on the same work in the Premier League,” said the French coach, who had spells in charge of Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Nice.

"It will be important for us and our fans also, because it is important to keep a good efficient team, to score and be rewarded for all of the many good things we can make in our game.

“We have the possibilities to play against the football of every opponent.”

Saints boss Claude Puel eyes first Premier League win over Swansea

Show/hide article…

Southampton manager Claude Puel is confident his players will finally get the rewards their performances deserve with a first Premier League victory of the season when Swansea visit St Mary’s on Sunday.

‘It was a good result for us in Europe, now it is important to carry on the same work in the Premier League,’ said the French coach, who had spells in charge of Monaco, Lille, Lyon and Nice.

'It will be important for us and our fans also, because it is important to keep a good efficient team, to score and be rewarded for all of the many good things we can make in our game.

‘We have the possibilities to play against the football of every opponent.’

Swansea have secured just one Premier League win so far, but head into Sunday’s match on the back of a 2-2 home draw against Chelsea, where it took a late goal from Diego Costa to earn Antonio Conte’s men a point.

Puel said: 'Swansea are a good team with good possibilities, good individuality. All the time in the Premier League, it is a difficult game because there are many possibilities, many good players who can make the difference.

‘They did not play this week, so Swansea can keep good energy to play against us, but it is important for us to stay with good concentration for our game and to just think about what we have to do on the pitch.’

Despite the inconsistent start to the season, Puel is relishing life in the English top flight.

‘It is a good and exciting challenge,’ he said.

‘I am concentrating on my team, and for my players it is the same, this is a very exciting season, we have to play many games in many competitions and it is important to learn together to play every three days.’

Paul Merson’s predictions: Watford to hold Man Utd, wins for Spurs and Palace

Show/hide article…

Sky Sports football pundit Paul Merson is back with another round of Premier League predictions.

The Magic Man tipped four correct results last weekend, but failed to get a perfect score for the second week running.

Following Liverpool’s win at Chelsea on Friday Night Football, there’s plenty to look forward to on Saturday and on Super Sunday, when Crystal Palace host Stoke and Tottenham welcome Sunderland.

So what is Merse predicting this week? Read on to find out…

Stoke are struggling. Really struggling. They have footballers in their team and it’s OK to have footballers when you are winning, but when you are losing, you need a bit of steel as well. I’m not sure they have that in them.

They need a Mark Hughes on the pitch, someone to dig in and put themselves about, and I worry for them - not in terms of relegation, but I’m not sure they will have the season they hoped for.

If Palace play to Christian Benteke’s strengths, and based on the Boro game it looks like they will, he will score goals.

Tottenham got a major Champions League lesson. They dominated large parts of the game against Monaco, but were naive and got caught out.

If the match was at White Hart Lane, I think the result would have been different. You would have had 40,000 die-hard Spurs fans, rather than 85,000, some of whom just turned up for the day and perhaps don’t watch Tottenham too often.

I expect them to get back on track at home, and for it to be very comfortable.

Sunderland are struggling. There wasn’t much in the game before half-time against Everton, and Jermain Defoe missed a great chance. If that starts happening, it’s going to be a long season.

Conceding three goals in 11 minutes is a worry too, because they just collapsed after the first went in.

Arsenal were lucky against Paris Saint-Germain because it should have been all over at half-time. To their credit, they showed their Champions League experience compared to Tottenham and dug in for a very good draw.

They started slowly against Southampton, though, and I thought they were poor, getting lucky at the end with the penalty.

Hull got a big point against Burnley. It’s alright beating the top teams like Leicester at home but you don’t want to lose against the likes of Burnley because those results define whether you stay up or go down.

Still, I can’t see past Arsenal here.

It was too easy for West Ham early on last weekend, and all of a sudden they conceded and it changed the whole complexion of the game. It is going to take a while for them to get used to the new stadium.

It’s a big game for West Brom because they were beaten by Bournemouth, a team I expect to be around them come the end of the season.

Neither team is in great shape, and while I wouldn’t be surprised if West Ham got the victory, I’m backing West Brom at home to get a point.

Bournemouth have to win the games against the teams around them and that’s what they did against West Brom. This is completely different; it’s basically a free swing.

Manchester City are playing great football at the moment. They ripped Manchester United apart and did the same to the third best team in Germany in the Champions League in midweek.

I have said Chelsea all along for the title, but it’s going to take some doing to compete with Man City. They looked head and shoulders above United even without Sergio Aguero.

Leicester should be flying after that great result in the Champions League. To go anywhere away from home in Europe, let alone in your first match, and put in a performance like that is impressive.

Their game suits the Champions League. When they go away from home, teams will have a go at them and that’s perfect, it’s when they play at home and have to break teams down that’s the problem.

It gives Burnley, who will be disappointed to have conceded so late against Hull, a chance to get something, but it was a poor result for them last weekend and I’m backing Leicester.

Boro had a bit of a wake-up call last week, getting picked off quite a few times by Crystal Palace.

They probably should have won at West Brom the week before and then they lose to Palace with a really tough game to come. Things can change very quickly; we know how ruthless this league is.

For all the ball Boro had at West Brom, they didn’t really hurt their opponents and the Romelu Lukaku factor is massive.

Idrissa Gueye looks a player as well and I fancy Everton to keep things going against Middlesbrough.

The win over West Ham was a big result for Watford, and not just because Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo got back on the goal trail.

Etienne Capoue has made a big change from the end of last season. They were getting predictable because it was almost like they didn’t have a chance when Deeney and Ighalo weren’t at it, but Capoue is giving them a little bit extra now.

Manchester United’s confidence will be knocked after losing in their own backyard against their arch enemy, who didn’t even have their best player. That was a major blow.

Watford are the league’s entertainers at the moment - there’s always goals when you go and watch them play.

This is a big game for both teams. Swansea did well to get a point against Chelsea but Lukasz Fabianski was very good.

At the same time, Southampton were unlucky at Arsenal. They played really well and should have got a point at least. It was a much better first half but they missed chances and got punished at the end.

They need to win this because they haven’t won a game yet, and all of a sudden the pressure starts building on a new manager.

But Southampton are a better team than their league position shows and I think it will come on Sunday.

This is a hard game for Chelsea because no John Terry makes a big difference for the hosts, especially as it means David Luiz comes in.

You don’t know what Liverpool will turn up. Will it be the hot one at home to Leicester, or the one that went to Burnley and got beaten.

I expect it to be an entertaining match either way. Chelsea are playing quite open and scoring goals, and Liverpool the same.

Watch Premier League football, the Ryder Cup and the EFL Cup as part of our three months’ half-price offer.

Premier League: Saturday’s best stats and facts from Opta

Show/hide article…

We round up the best stats and facts from Saturday’s Premier League action, with the help of Opta…

Arsenal have won more games at the KCOM Stadium in all competitions than any other away side (six).

Hull have lost back-to-back home league games for the first time since May 2015.

Alexis Sanchez has been involved in eight goals in his five games against Hull in all competitions (six goals, two assists).

However, Sanchez’s penalty miss means he’s the only Arsenal player to take more than one Premier League penalty and fail to score with any of them (also missing against QPR in December 2014).

The Gunners have earned three successive Premier League victories for the first time since December 2015.

Theo Walcott has scored three goals in his last two games against Hull at the KCOM Stadium in all competitions.

Granit Xhaka scored his first goal in league competition since October 31, 2015 (a strike for Borussia Monchengladbach against Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga).

Arsene Wenger’s side haven’t lost any of their last 26 Premier League games against newly promoted sides (W22 D4).

Islam Slimani has scored nine headed goals in league competition in 2016 - seven for Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese Liga and two for Leicester City in the Premier League.

Slimani’s league goal tally in 2016 now stands at 22 goals in 23 league appearances.

Leicester City are now unbeaten in 10 successive league games against Burnley (W7 D3 L0).

Burnley have failed to score in six of their last eight Premier League games away from home.

The Clarets attempted two shots on target in this match. They have attempted just four in their last three Premier League games overall, while they’ve allowed their opponents 19 shots on target in these three matches.

This was Leicester’s second highest possession figure in a Premier League match under Claudio Ranieri (59 per cent) and only the eighth time in 43 games under the Italian that they have held more possession than their opponents.

Nacer Chadli’s penalty was the eighth that WBA have been awarded in the Premier League since December 2014, but only the third that they have converted.

This was the first penalty that Chadli has taken in the Premier League, despite it being his 90th appearance in the competition.

Salomon Rondon has now scored in four of his last seven Premier League appearances for West Bromwich Albion (four goals).

Nacer Chadli scored two and assisted two more in this match - the first time a West Brom player has had a hand in four goals in a single Premier League game.

West Bromwich Albion scored 4+ goals in a Premier League match for the first time under Tony Pulis.

Michail Antonio has scored more headed goals on his own (five) than any other team in the Premier League this season.

West Ham attempted 23 shots in this match. Since the start of May, the Hammers have attempted 19+ shots in five games but lost in four of these.

The Hammers have conceded at least two goals in 12 of their last 15 Premier League matches (33 goals conceded overall).

Manchester City have won their first eight games of the season (in all competitions), the first top-flight team to achieve this since Chelsea in 2005/06 (nine games in total).

Bournemouth have kept just one clean sheet in their last 14 Premier League games.

The Citizens have won each of their three Premier League meetings with the Cherries all by a four-goal margin (5-1 at home in October 2015, 4-0 away in April 2016 and 4-0 today).

Kevin De Bruyne has had a hand in 34 goals in his 48 appearances for Manchester City in all competitions (18 goals, 16 assists).

Jack Wilshere has failed to complete 90 minutes in any of his last 18 Premier League games, last playing a full game in the top-flight on 13th September 2014 (v Manchester City).

Kelechi Iheanacho has scored 10 Premier League goals from just 14 shots on target in the competition.

Iheanacho is the 16th teenager to score 10 Premier League goals (also the 16th youngest).

Raheem Sterling has had a hand in eight goals in his seven appearances for Manchester City this season in all competitions (scoring three, assisting five).

Ilkay Gundogan is the first player to score on his Manchester City Premier League debut since Javi Garcia in September 2012 (v Stoke City).

Nolito picked up his first red card in his 124th appearance in the big five European leagues.

Everton have won four of their first five league games for the first time since 1978/79, when the Toffees eventually finished fourth in the First Division.

Middlesbrough failed to direct a single shot on target in the game but still scored; only the 10th time in the Premier League since Opta began recording this statistic (03/04) a team has managed this (last time was Bournemouth v Man Utd - 17th May 2016).

Gareth Barry became only the third player to make 600 Premier League appearances (also Ryan Giggs, 632 and Frank Lampard, 609).

Barry has scored two goals in his last four Premier League games, as many as in his 95 before that.

Barry’s goal was his fifth in the Premier League against Middlesbrough, more than against any other side.

Seamus Coleman netted his first league goal at Goodison Park in his last 32 appearances at the ground (since scoring at home v Aston Villa v October 2014).

Romelu Lukaku has now scored against 21 different teams in the Premier League.

Lukaku has netted four goals in his last two games for Everton in all competitions after failing to find the back of the net in any of his 13 games before that.

Ronald Koeman was no risk-taker, claims Southampton’s Oriol Romeu

Show/hide article…

Southampton’s Oriol Romeu has taken a pop at Ronald Koeman.

The midfielder complained the Dutchman’s no-risk approach took the fun out of playing.

Koeman left Saints to take charge of Everton in June and Romeu revealed he has rediscovered his love of football under new boss Claude Puel.

He aims to repay Puel when Swansea visit by giving him his first Premier League win after two draws and two defeats.

The midfielder said: “Koeman wanted to play from the back and if there was any risk he wouldn’t want us to take the risk.

“Nowadays we’re just trying to help each other and trying to get that ball from the back.

“We might lose more balls in that dangerous area but then we have more numbers in the box and we go up and down in a block.

“In time we will do better. This time we enjoy it more and are more confident.”

Southampton 3-0 Sparta Prague: Charlie Austin nets twice as Claude Puel’s men cruise to victory

Charlie Austin is set to be benched by Frenchman Puel despite ending his eight-month goal drought against Sparta Prague in the Europa League, with the former Nice manager rotating his squad.

But Romeu backed Austin to start hitting the goal trail and fire Saints up the table.

“When a striker scores they always feel comfortable and they enjoy it a lot,” said the Spain Under-23 international. “Against Sparta he had two chances and put them in. It’s good for us.

“He’s been working a lot and on Thursday he got the prize.

“Hopefully this weekend or as soon as possible he gets more and more goals.

“Hopefully the win will kick start the manager’s tenure. We had to wait longer than we would have wanted. We hope to keep winning and keep enjoying this feeling.”
