Most Premier League yellow cards: Who tops the all-time list?

Show/hide article…

Gareth Barry made his 600th Premier League appearance on Saturday afternoon as Everton beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at Goodison Park.

The midfielder, who started his professional career at Aston Villa in 1998, now sits third in the table of all-time Premier League appearance holders, behind Frank Lampard (609) and Ryan Giggs (632), and has admitted he wants to play on until he reaches the age of 40.

Playing in central midfield for all that time, shielding defences, the ex-England international has racked up his fair share of yellow cards, as he did against Boro.

But where does he rank compared to other Premier League stars across the last 24 years? Click the right arrow above to find out…

Best Bets for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Manchester United vs Watford plus punts at Spurs, Palace and Southampton

Show/hide article…

Bet that Zlat’ll do nicely when Manchester United go to Watford today.

After Thursday’s Euro flop, Jose Mourinho promises a return to a ‘normal team’ for this late-breakfast trip - that means Zlatan Ibrahimovic should start against a Hornets side that’s kept one clean sheet since February.

I can live without the 8/13 United, but Ibra rates a solid odds-on ‘anytime’ quote on the raw data of his last couple of year’s efforts – so the 23/20 (Coral) ‘anytime scorer’ today is sweet.

And don’t be shy about the standout 5/1 (Lads) that Ibra ‘scores two or more goals’ - his bare numbers say that’s value to get up early for.

You have to get up in the middle of the night to catch Stoke boss Mark Hughes with his pants down, and he’ll be concentrating on not exposing his Potters to Crystal Palace .

Southampton look too short at 4/6 for the visit of Swansea – it’s the likeliest result of course but the market makers have got there ahead of us.

It might be that some bookies are being slow to catch on to Leroy Fer’s rebranding as a goal threat in the Swans’ play book. Have some 15/2 (Paddy) ‘anytime scorer’ about the Dutchman.

Sunderland’s vulnerability against a big man who can head it won’t have escaped Harry Kane’s notice but it seems the price setters haven’t spotted he’s only scored once in 11 games.

He’s poor value at the odds on offer.

A Toby Alderweireld ‘anytime scorer’ punt follows the same air-attack logic, and is a fun longshot at 17/2 (Paddy).

He’s clearly one of the unlikely lads, but has scored in five of his 28 Tottenham ‘home’ games.

Last week: Winners at 13/5, 10/11 and 11/10

“Time will tell” if Saints have enough strength in depth

Show/hide article…

DUSAN Tadic admits that only time will tell over whether or not Saints have enough strength in depth to cope with their hectic fixture list.

The Serbian has also accepted that it will be difficult to replicate the success of the past few seasons due to rivals’ investment, writes Peter Howard.

Manager Claude Puel has maintained that he believes he has sufficient options and quality to deal with a fixture list fit to bursting point with Europa League, Premier League and domestic cup matches in the coming months.

Although Tadic believes at this stage the Saints team has the numbers to get by, the playmaker knows the true reality of the situation may only reveal itself when the games are coming thick and fast.

“The squad is large enough, but will see,” he said ahead of Sunday’s league visit of Swansea.“Time will tell, but I think it is large enough.”

The 27-year-old, who is a major part of Puel’s new system as a number 10 behind the strikers, knows that the squad will have to be dealt with carefully to ensure that they are fresh for every game.

“You need to take good recovery,” he said. "You need to eat good, you need to take good rest and sleep well.

“Normally when you have a lot of game you don’t train so much. These are all important things and when the game comes you feel much better.”

Saints have achieved record-breaking finishes and Europa League qualification in back-to-back campaigns, but Tadic has recognised that the Premier League is far tougher after considerable investment from rivals during the transfer window.

“Every time it (the Premier League) gets better and now a lot of coaches come to the Premier League and always it is always improving.”

He added; “It’s much more difficult, all strong teams invest lots of money and then it’s hard to be at the top of the table.”

Tadic wants Saints to now get some much-needed points on the board in the top-flight, with their first chance to get a first win the league at home to Swansea.

“It’s always a worry when you don’t get points, but it’s important that you give your best, when you go on the pitch that you do the right things,” he said.

“We will try to take to points and put the pressure on us because we need to take points against everyone.”

He added: “Other teams also have a lot of qualities and that doesn’t make it easy because of that it is important we take points as quick as possible.”

Southampton, Sunderland and Stoke: Why has it all gone wrong so quickly?

Show/hide article…

Southampton have again had to absorb huge change both on and off the field this year. Three of the best players were sold in Victor Wanyama, Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mané. The replacements – Pierre Emile Hoijberg, Sofiane Boufal and even Charlie Austin – are still settling. They are also adapting to the new methods of Claude Puel and there does just still seem to be an unease and lack of confidence following all the upheaval.

Probably a blip but the margins of error in the Premier League are small and so it will not take that much of a dip to fall down towards a relegation battle. Southampton have pulled off the trick of selling key players and still improving for several years now but the question is whether such clever recruitment can ever be indefinitely sustained. They still have a good squad but wins are needed quickly to settle nerves and avoid a season in which they are looking over their shoulders.
