The 2017 Election Thread

Having a pop at the SNP.

I love Twitter.

Correct me if I’m wrong (I am rather hazy on this) but doesn’t the ‘zi’ part of Nazi stand for the German word for socialism? And didn’t Hitler basically create a collectivist state with tax, borrow and spend policies in order to create full employment? So, persumably the Nazi party were closer to the Labour Party than the Tory Party (in terms of economic policy; we’ll exclude Crystal Nacht and brown shirts etc…)

Interesting data. Has everything the tories have said about Labour and borrowing been a lie?

Looks a bit like your work @pap

A very passionate labour member and been in politics for years. Very chuffed that she is standing for Carlisle. My sister-in-law is friends with her and how I got to know her. She is also a huge Foo Fighters fan, all round top woman!

Spun by the media…

Yes, when I think ‘Nazi’ I immediately think: “socialism”, " collectivist state" and “full employment”.

Not: persecution of minorities, war-mongering and propoganda.

It’s not my work, but since you brought it up, I thought I’d mention how my work is getting on.

Twitter is moribund, or confrontational. A complete contrast from the days of the chicken coup. Not many interactions.

Facebook is something else. I’ve been ploughing my furrow in a Jeremy Corbyn group, getting hundreds of likes, and hundreds of shares. The conspiratorial side of me might say “Twitter’s being controlled, man!”

However, it could be just as likely that the debate has shifted to Facebook.

Is “Shy Labour” a thing?

You are correct. Corbs has been done up by the media.

My politics teacher reckoned that in that final polling booth analysis, people vote for what’s right for them.

How many are going to look at that manifesto and think “that’s right for me”?

It is the thing that we are trying to get across. Please forget if you ‘like’ the leader of the party, just read the pledges and say as a human being, that you do not think they are the right way to run the country. If you have the time read the manifesto when it comes out.

People just pick up papers and watch the BBC news and just believe what they are being told. It comes across when the same thing comes out of people’s mouths, “Corbyn is not a strong enough/likeable leader”. “None of them are worth voting for”.

All I want are people to read the manifestos of all and then make up their own minds what they think is best for them. Also use their voting rights, and get out there and vote on this basis.

It s very frustrating as most do not want to hear what you are saying, or already have their minds made up and are not for turning!

I spend less time trying to convince people on here, as most fall into the not for turning, on the streets you feel that you can change the minds of the floating voter anyway!

Crazy game! But fun!

What’s really frustrating is that such a good job has been done on Corbyn that he has no chance. A politician with integrity, intelligence and compassion. It will never do. Great, common-sense manifesto in a world that wants only vacuous soundbites.

I despair of politics in this and other countries.

Fuck em all.

Not really. Nazi was indeed an abbreviation of the German for “National Socialist”; however, the nationalist side massively overwhelmed any socialist thinking. Like other fascist organisations, the Nazis placed a lot of importance on the state, but not in a way that many would regard as socialist.

The world ends when you’re dead.

Until then you’ve got more punishment in store.

Stand it like a man and give some back.

People in ignorance or convenience forget Hitler needed the unions to gain power and once he did he banned them, he wasn’t a socialist, what did he think of communism? It was a vehicle to gain power from the masses, oldest trick in the book, Pol Pot did it.

Heading out to Wirral West, a local marginal, to knock on doors in a bit.

There was an 11am session that I could have attended, but I never think they’re worth it on a Saturday morning.

As I’m sure our “slightly pickled” thread illustrates, a lot of people are unplayable at that time :lou_sunglasses:

Amber Rudd has been in the headlines this week because it is thought that she is Theresa’s top choice to replace Spreadshit Phil as chancellor, leading to our first all female top team.

This then, is interesting. The Greens are pulling their candidate out of the Hastings race to help Labour to attempt to unseat her.

Hasting Green Party has agreed to stand down their candidate in Hastings and Rye in a bid to help the Labour Party unseat Amber Rudd.

The local party came to this decision on the condition after Labour’s candidate Peter Chowney has agreed to a number of pledges, which include supporting proposals for electoral reform and will opposing new runways at Heathrow or Gatwick.

Conservative opponent, Rudd, is currently Home Secretary and has voted consistently to cut welfare benefits, including housing benefit, disability benefits and tax credits.

One for Bazza:
