I did read the book and love the “wrong” music and whole Britishness of it
I worked with an old timer who, like most of the WWII Survey types found themselves in North Africa in 1940.
Mac was an irascible bugger with a short fuse but we were good friends, me 30, Mac coming up for retirement. He was a good photographer and I was a keen snapper too. We used to go on photo sorties in the summer.
We used to have flaming rows in the office but 5 minutes later Mac would be at my desk with a photo mag, “Here nip have a look at this”
He didn’t ever say anything about his war years, unlike the other Survey Squaddies who were full of stories. Mac was in The Long Range Desert Group I was warned, “Be careful, he’s a trained killer”
Sadly Mac died at 62, on the third green of Romsey Golf course.
Please tell me that he holed out before expiring…
Yep he holed out before expiring.
At the funeral service, in the aisle of the church was the most enormous black house spider. At that point I felt his presence at the ceremony.
It is an bloody annoying short par 3.
It’s probably what did for him.
Good in Rogue Heroes. Google it, the actor who plays him goes to chat with the real life Mike Sadler
‘Ancient Apocalypse’ on Netflix.
Graham Hancock (crackpot to some, visionary truth seeker to others) explores ancient megalithic structures around the world, questioning their origin and official timeline.
Fascinating watch whatever your take on it, never knew there was an ancient pyramid in Mexico larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza, or Gobekli Tepe, a huge megalithic temple believed to date around 9500 BC.
The same as divergent evolution apparently
Aha.
So that’s why SAS Rogue Heroes is so good.
It’s from the Peaky Blinders creators.
Proper old skool TV
Oh.
So that’s why everyone I know is commenting about Ancient Apocalypse on Netflix.
15 minutes in.
Hooked
Fascinating stuff isn’t it? Even if you don’t agree with Hancock’s theories these structures alone are pretty fucking special.
There’s just something about him that makes you say…oh yeah??
Agree on the amazing structures though.
You don’t need Netflix, It’s exactly like all the myriad of similar “documentaries” (and not forgetting ones about Hitler) you get on the low budget TV in the UK, but with an English accent.
He’s really good at making out he’s woefully misunderstood and the enemy of established science and archaeology.
Well produced, but, really?
Obviously I’m one of the human race that has his alleged historical amnesia.
Snake oil salesman - imho of course
He is first and foremost a journalist so he does have a flair for the dramatic, but he has been saying for more than 30 years that we were building these structures more than 10,000 years ago, a theory poo pooed by the experts and now been proven to be correct with the discovery of Gobekli Tepe. So I think it’s fair to say there is some weight behind his overall premise - these structures are older than we thought* - his overemphasis on the mythology and his treatment by academia shouldn’t detract from this I think.
*@lifeintheslowlane can you confirm pls?
Yes I can. Our clan emerged from the Ice Age wearing Brogues and Savile Row suits. Some will poo-poo this claim but Graham Hancock’s research has found those doubters have turned out to be major investors in Primark. Disgraceful.
Pepsi - where’s my jet?
Netflix
Salutary tale of what happens when big corporations don’t pay attention to marketing
Shocking manipulation of the poor in the Phillipines - not that @PhilippineSaint was involved obvs.
Big business wins obvs but don’t come out looking good.
David v Goliath
Whilst most have been distracted by “SAS - Rogue Heroes” another fine six-parter has sneaked in almost unnoticed (certainly no mention here) on BBC2, iPlayer and Prime Video.
Hugo Blick’s “The English” starring Emily Blunt. Chaske Spencer and Rafe Spall is nothing like the Westerns I was fed in my younger days and all the better for it. The acting is outstanding, the storyline complex but focussed by Blunt’s simple quest for revenge, and the setting. breath-taking.
Thoroughly recommended…
Loving it. Watched first 4 in one hit.
