Iāve watched a load more of the Orville. Iām in the early part of season three - Iāve just watched the one where they go to the Krill homeworld to get a peace treaty signed.
In much the same way as Galaxy Quest is one of the best Trek films despite not being Trek, The Orville is that on television. There is the comedic element, which is less apparent these days but never out of place, but it is tonally very similar to the Trek of the '90s, even down to the way music is used and the way scenes are composed.
What I really like about it is its ability to create its own myths and really double down on them. The Kaylon incident is a great example. Far from being a one-off, the aftermath drives plots big and small for many episodes afterward.
Even episodes that I was a bit cringed by in the middle, I enjoyed by the end. The one with the simulated 21st century person springs to mind. Felt very icky while unresolved and yet was resolved wonderfully.
I think itās more consistently good than Trek these days.
More consistently good than most Trek apart from SNW which runs it close
It was always a homage to TNG era Trek and what it does so well is to make you feel all warm fuzzy & comfy in the nostalgia of that feel while being different.
The whole Roe v Wade thing on Krill hit at exactly the right moment yet was unintended timing wise and would never have been addressed in TNG
SNW is very good, but itās not as good as The Orville.
SNW is doing a very good job of living in the ruins of Trek, but itās still full of flashy camera angles and whatnot.
The Orville has had to do its world-building from scratch in three years. Yes, both have leveraged existing Trek in their own ways to tell stories, but I reckon the Orville is doing it better than SNW.
As for other Trek, compare how Orville does themes of gender compared to Discovery. Topaās journey is utterly compelling and will have you welling up several times over the saga. Discovery decides to mess the Trill up by making them look like schizophrenics plagued by previous incarnations.
The wholly irreverent yet supremely canonical Lower Decks is back for S3.
And it hits the spot yet again.
Lower Deck crew covered in Alien cum, Zefran Cochran and the Pheonix, heck even a momentary glimpse of Tuvok and instead of Oh, for Godsā sake, we now have Oh, for Kirksā sake.
So moving provider. Whatās with all these streaming providers having one, maybe 2 shows people actually want to watch.
Was discussing this with Fam C_S and the consensus is that having to pay multiple subscriptions isnāt l sustainable- people will stream illegally or vote with their feet and not bother.
Lower Decks S3Ep7
Different
May I strongly recommend you do not consume any liquids around the 10m mark.
Homage to something not Trek in the memory banks and Vodka spray followed
Each new show is basically catering to different audiences
Lower Decks continues to be amusing and loving.
In Ep8 we get Captain Sulu & The Defiant as well as Section 31 after a daft Holodeck romp.
It can be argued that this show has the most Easter Eggs & Crossovers imaginable.
Prodigy returns soon, very different but it has Janeway & maybe this season, Borg & Chakotay
Prodigy is clever.
Its aimed at kids, but because of the way they have put it together it is still proper Trek.
In the mid season premiere (S1 Ep10 to be precise)
We had a Spacewhale, Chakotay and now.
Oh deep joy, and without any time travel twists - TWO Janewayās!
Deep geekness right there
You REALLY should.
I had a 'mare with my regular providerās stream not working, my back up not working so found a 3rd source fmovies.to
Probably infected with Covid again or a nastier virus for Defender to battle but it was REALLY worth it.
Lower Decks is for Trek lovers - so many shout outs to other parts of Trek canon. Hell even @pap may not be offended by it!
(Prodigy is also very loving & clever) Neither show is what I would be happy watching normally - the only ātoonā worth watching was Roger Rabbit or Roadrunner - but these are
