🖖 Star Trek returning to small screens :starfleet:

Dumb shit aside, I am actually enjoying most of this season of Discovery, mostly because there is a lot less of the dumb shit.

I’m not sure how I’ve missed this, but it appears Kate Mulgrew is reprising her role as Admiral Janeway for the upcoming Star Trek Prodigy. Watching her favourite episode, Counterpoint, at the moment.

So this week’s episode of Star Trek Discovery was both good and bad in equal measure. Broadly, I thought it was a good send-off for the character that ends up leaving, especially the way that complete closure with Burnham was achieved.

The resolution was bananas. While it made superficial sense, the amount of damage that she can potentially do sent back to that time is incalculable.

My brain was exploding with Grandfather Paradoxes all through, but, in fairness that is kind of resolved.
And we KNEW … stops no spoilers

And loved the voice over from a 53 year old show
TOS S1 ep 23 or 28 I think. And one of the best ever.

Time travel is a very inconsistent thing in Trek.

RedLetterMedia’s Mike reckons it got fucked with the TNG episode Parallels, the one where Worf keeps jumping about between universes.

That’s probably the most outrageous example, the Mirror Universe implies multiple dimensions and we have the whole new Kelvin timeline.

Which nobody except you cares about! Ha!

Fuck - read this 10mins before watching it

Thanks a lot guys / fucking idiot C_S

Kelvin was great because we got Trek back.

Personally, the problem was not so much the reboot but the pastiche Bond style plots.

Trek never had “villains” but Kelvin gave us cartoon Blofelds each outing.

Luckily they got it back to TV and eventually untangled themselves from “too much” canon by having a new canvas.
I just hope we dont stay stuck on The Burn, let Ossira become Blofeld and we get on with some strange new shit

Really?
You didnt make that a 2 hour special?
Talk about leaving us hanging you bastards

Could have been - and was trying out the new sound bar for the TV I got for Xmas too…

Last few episodes seems like they are getting back to the days of smoking or dropping weird shit in the writers room before work.

That slightly bat shit believable craziness in the story lines rather than by the numbers.

Enjoyed it,

What’s that? A hostile group has overtaken your eponymous starship?

That’s a good 5% of Trek, init?

Episodes where people change species and / or appearance? I think that’s a good 2% of Trek in general, and a good 40% of Deep Space Nine specifically

I’ve a due sense of dread about the upcoming episode. Maybe I’ve missed something planted in that episode, but the entire crew seems comprehensively fucked with no obvious way of resolving it.

The problem with modern Trek is that when there is no obvious way of resolving something, they will use a ridiculous means instead.

My top prediction for the final two episodes involves:-

  1. Burnham reactivating dilithium.
  2. Tilly leads a successful takeover of Discovery, jumping back to rescue Burnham
  3. Ossyra escapes, gets back to her ship. With dilithium back, she’ll announce her intention to take a fleet to Starfleet HQ and wipe it out with the rest of the Emerald Chain.
  4. Discovery will spore back and get ready for the fight. They’ll ask for help from all the people they’ve helped this year. They’ll get knocked back by most over comms. What they have won’t be enough.
  5. Then, when all seems lost, all these fuckers will suddenly warp in, break the Emerald Chain, the Federation saved and restored in a single moment.

Tell me I’m wrong. But that’s about 4% of Star Trek.

You missed the obvious one.
They conned Ossyra into beaming into their newly installed Holodeck…
Otherwise Tilleys’ new career is finished

No, otherwise they’ll just make up some ridiculous bullshit.

Logic might apply on Vulcan. Vulcan literally doesn’t exist anymore.

I’ve not watched any of series 3, I watched the first 2 series out of some kind of franchise loyalty but was particularly underwhelmed. Is series 3 worth the time and effort to catch up?

Yes.
Very much so.
It is as if the handcuffs of canon have been taken off and it has now grown. It can do strange new shit at last.
Some episodes are very good.
Worth the effort certainly

And that is very much the happy answer. The jury is still out for me.

Well, Fam C_S have pretty much enjoyed all of it, including plot holes, moments of incredulity, but we’re not dyed in the wool Trekkies and all have different favorite versions/spin-offs.

One of the few things on the telly box that draws the whole family in to watch at the same time

Looking forward to another series too.

Bugger. How could I have missed the obvious

We’ve delayed watching latest episode as YoungAdult#1 is feeling a bit delicate today - bless…

In other news Mrs C_S bought me a new sound bar to go with the telly box for Xmas so less need for subtitles (or a hearing aid) - anyway she didn’t realise there’s a Bluetooth function so have been confusing the fuck out of them by playing random rock tracks from another room :joy:
