Eureka !
1935ā¦confirmed from The National Archives of Netherlandsā¦
Iāve just found the picture download in high definition so the coloured pencils are being sharpened.
Can I pre order?!
Iāll let you know.
A couple of additional pictures taken by Willem Van De Poll, seemingly on the same day in 1935. Two of the Cunard Liner, Aquitania and one of the still incomplete Civic Centre. You can see the steel skeleton of the Guildhall behind the front facadeā¦the last part of the Civic Centre to be built.
Oh fuck itā¦at a loose end this morning so I thought Iād do a little Photoshop magic on this one tooā¦
This is the RMS Aquitania in Ocean Dock on Willem Van de Pollās arrival onboard the Rotterdam Lloyd ship MS Baloeran. Little did the Dutch photographer realise 86 years later I was going to fuck up his lovely b&w pictures with carelessly applied colour.
Good work
I didnāt know you were an avid rower back then though.
Was it intentional to make the ship in the far background to look as if itās camouflaged with seaweed?
Hahaā¦didnāt spot the boat in the background so Iāve recoloured it.
I used to row folks across the Itchen before there was a floating bridge but the coming of steam ruined my trade. You canāt see the rope in the picture but I was in fact towing the MS Baloeran into its berth behind the Aquitania.
This is pretty cool
Well I, for one, am glad the Bovril is served hot.
Iām sure Lord Slowlane will be along shortly to give us a match report.
In deed, quite a festive occasion. We loaded the Shooting Brake at 11am and the Ostler hitched our best matching pair to make sure we clipped on at steady canter. We made our way to The Clump Inn and stopped off for a couple of jugs of ale.
We didnāt stay long as the picnic hamper was sweating up something rotten so again we continued the journey to Southampton Common, arriving at 11.30 and set up camp near the Ornamental Lake. As it was unseasonably warm we took the opportunity to skinny-dip in the lake (see attached picture)
Being chivalrous I wrapped Lady Slowlane in a horse blanket as we tucked into the Jugged Hare and Larks Tongue in Aspic. Again copious amounts of Ale were supped as we wound up towards 3pm.
Canāt remember much about the game as we were pretty inebriated at kick off. Quite a few grubby miners had made their way from Swansea via Charabanc. Fortunately the local Police had intercepted them at Totton Causeway and escorted them to the Corporation Baths before the game.
I believe Swansea won 0 - 9.
They were only in it for the Manet.
Iām trying to work out where his lordshipās right hand is, he looks very furtive, and the naked serving wench certainly has a dreamy expression on her face.
Iām too much of a gentleman to elaborate on your sordid implication.
