Great shot of bevois valley.
The old Southampton Zoo. Never really seen the entrance of this before.
Left in the top picture is Heinz Burt, who went on to star as the blonde bombshell in the Tornados. The second British band to have a number 1 hit in the US.
and went solo later and had a hit with his song about Eddie CochranâŚ
I can just about remember going to this as a small kid. However, my most powerful memory of this place was breaking into it after it had been closed down and had not yet become the Hawthorns Centre. Really weird. Place had been closed for years, but you could still smell evidence of the animals.
Now, why does this not surprise me! Also that evidence of animals you could smell, well I would not be surprised if they left some behind!
The old Chapel Crossing. About time they got a station at SMS!

I remember these tank engines from my childhood train spotting days. They were an American design and shipped over during WW2. There were about a dozen of them and worked exclusively in Southampton DocksâŚvery common site down the bottom end of town in the '50 and '60s. There was a railway line that linked the old and new docks and thatâs where youâd always see them, as in the picture.
Love this picture.
