:southampton: 🖼 Southampton - Past in pictures - places & people

I think the day of having a hard copy of your pictures, have long gone, but on the plus side, there are more pictures being taken in the advent of camera phones. So when we are long gone, people will be looking at our photos… But only if we put them in the public domain.

I have no idea where this is in Southampton, but I love the ‘Hot’ Fish & Chip part. This must have been shortly after fish was sold cold and you cracked off the batter, to get to the fresh fish. The batter used to be discarded!

I think …I recognise Goatboy… in the doorway of the chip shop.

holding the little dog …although…looking at the eyes

he could be the one with the hat on

Why do I not know the location of this pub?

One of the best £1.50 you will ever spend!

Nr. The Veracity Ground (theatre of dreams) iirc.

The “public domain” is not the real answer…they have to be labelled with accurate descriptions if they’re going to be useful in future. I have nearly 3000 pictures on FB…most are dated and described. It’s no good telling people to go back and label all their pictures after they’ve posted them. Modern images will be mostly worthless without descriptions. This is a family picture…I know everyone in that picture…it’s all been recorded…

Yes I agree, but it is still better to have available imaged of landmarks anyway, that you can mostly tell the location, by other landmarks around in the photo. Personal ones, like the one you have posted, I agree, not much good without the info. But landmarks are normally pretty obvious, or others can pin them down to a place in time.

Without the photo at all, it is no good and lost forever.

^^^ There was talk of demolishing the Bargate in Victorian times to make way for the trams but then some bright spark hit on the idea of lowering the road level under the archway.

Nice shot, with the high street and above bar, cutting through the centre of town.
