In 2010 the crossroads are now traffic lights. The millennium feather, created by artist Peter Codling. The giant feather sculpture which was inspired by flight and sail, both of which Woolston has long connections with.
December 2001 the new fire station opened and officially recommissioned on 27th March 2002, exactly 97 years to the day the original St Mary’s fire station was opened. It has the original fire station brass pole.
East Street - 1910. East Street has always been a busy shopping street. It was the site of the original Marks and Spencer’s shop, which opened at No4 East street in 1910.
Looking down the road from the high street, it is possible to see the East Street shopping centre. This was the first indoor shopping centre in the town. It did not have the commercial success that later shopping centres in Southampton have enjoyed. East Street is no longer open!
2004 - British Telecom building, at the top of the high street looked a very sorry sight, as it had been up for sale and was under offer, at the time of this picture.
2010 - the office block has gone and been replaced by residential apartments, with shops beneath. Telephone house surgery occupies the a ground floor office.
Very little change to the scenery.
The reflective nature of both clothing and today’s high-powered car paintwork, is what stands out! Rather than the strangely placed lamp-post from the original 1960 photo!
Bustling Palmerston Road was built in the 1840’s but there has been a pub on the site of No1 Palmerston Road since 1830’s, when it was called the Joiner’s Arms. The building was renamed the Eagle Hotel in the 1860’s. Over the road is Palmerston Park.
The present pub building was erected in 1920’s, in 1969 it was renamed the Hogshead and then the Eagle in 1991. It is now a news agents.
From 2001-2005, when I was a season ticket holder, living in Southampton, this was my pre-match drinking hole. I bought a sausage roll in the newsagents 2 seasons ago! As the Eagle (a bit of a bikers club), I also used to drink in there between the years of 1992-95.
Right that’s it. 3 hours and 2 pages of posting pictures and 1 up vote and no comments… Bed time!
I like the pub before and after pictures. I very rarely remember them so it’s nice to have pictures.
This thread is inspiring me to get my camera out and have a wander around town.
Maybe I’ll do requests.
